Eddie Darnall Jr.

Ray Edward "Eddie" Darnall Jr., of Augusta died April 23, 2003, at University Hospital in Augusta.
A native of Elizabethtown, Ky., he was a son of the late Ray Darnall Sr. and Mirdza "Mickie" Darnall. He worked as a gauge coordinator at Club Car for 32 years. He was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Hill Darnall; a son, Ray Darnell III of Augusta; a daughter, Nicole Darnall of Augusta; two brothers, DeWain Darnall and David Darnall, both of Savannah; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home in Augusta with the Rev. Hubert Story officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Danny Nobles, Richard Mercer, Phillip Marsingill, Larry Watkins, Dale James and Robin Whisenant.
Elliott Sons Funeral Home in Augusta was in charge of arrangements.

Rafael Blakely

Rafael Remirze Blakely, 17, of Colbert died April 19, 2003, at Lake Greenwood in Greenwood, S.C.
A native of Elbert County, he was a son of Robert Holloway of Greenwood, S.C., and Jeanette Arnold Blakely of Colbert. He was a member of Hunter's Chapel A.M.E. Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a sister, Tekila Walker of Colbert; and a brother, Jeffrey Blakely of Colbert.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Hunter's Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Stephen Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Clevan Jennings, A.B. Williams, Jeff Teasley, Chris Williams, Jerry Rucker and Delveccio Binns. Honorary pallbearers were Rudy Cooper, Derrick Kelly and Ronnie Williams.
C.W. Phelps Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ed Cox

James Edward "Ed" Cox, 63, of Royston died April 25, 2003, at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.
A native of Westminster, S.C., he was a son of the late Clifford and Lucile Chastain Cox Powell. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Price Chapel Church of God. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Stephens Cox of the home; four sons, Jimmy Cox, Joe Cox, Thomas Cox and Bobby Cox, all of Columbia, S.C.; a stepson, Ricky Youngblood of Royston; two stepdaughters, Shirley Campbell of Royston and Deborah Patterson of Carnesville; a sister, Agnes Craft of Belton, S.C.; a half-brother, Jack Powell of Abbeville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Pruitt Funeral Home chapel in Royston with the Revs. Johnny Stowe and James Gunn officiating. Burial was in Franklin Memorial Gardens South.
Pallbearers were Herman Dowell, Edward Dowell, Than Royston, Leon Roach, Phil Campbell and Hugh Roach.
Pruitt Funeral Home in Royston was in charge of arrangements.

Philip Moon

Thomas Philip Moon Sr., 78, of 1546 Old Middleton Road in Elberton died April 22, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.
A native of Elbert County, he was a son of the late George Henry Moon and Mattie Lou Yeargin Moon. He was a member of Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a deacon for 55 years. He was retired from Elberton Mills. He was a farmer and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Moore Moon; his second wife, Nadene Ray Moon; three brothers, Lewis Moon, Aubra Moon and the Rev. Dorsey Moon; and a sister, Addie Stone.
Survivors include his step-mother, Velma Moon of Elberton; two daughters, Lavada Lankford of Ellaville and Martha Gail Moon of Crawford; a step-daughter, Eva Maskew of Elberton; a son, the Rev. Thomas P. Moon Jr. of Carnesville; a stepson, Tony Mincey Sr. of Hartwell; five sisters, Mary Scarborough, Lou Yeargin and Mildred Slay, all of Elberton, Ruth Raborn of Jackson, S.C., and Corene Kinard of Greenwood, S.C.; two step-sisters, Louise Raborn of Greenwood, S.C., and Sallie Alexander of Elberton; four brothers, Elmer Moon of Anderson, S.C., J.E. Moon of Elberton, Henry Moon of Toccoa and Walter Moon of Greenwood, S.C.; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Phillip Hart, the Rev. Thomas Moon Jr. and the Rev. Lawrence Johnson officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park in Elberton.
Pallbearers were Wesley Moon, Ben Lankford, Tony Mincey Jr., Kevin Mon, Craig Dickerson and Marshall Slay. Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Berry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Barney Heard

Barney Heard, 97, of Tignall died April 22, 2003.
A native of Tignall, he was a son of the late Charles Washington Heard and Ruth Eugenia Hulme Heard. He was a retired farmer and bus driver and a member of the Georgia School Bus Drivers' Association. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Bailey Heard.
Survivors include three sons, Charles B. Heard of Elberton, Joseph M. Heard of Anderson, S.C., and Robert D. Heard of Rayle; a daughter, Sylvia H. Davis of Tignall; a sister, Amy H. Stewart of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held Thursday at Tignall Baptist Cemetery in Tignall with the Rev. Danny Holdredge officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Tignall Baptist Church general fund.
Pallbearers were Emery Heard, Richard Heard, Joel Heard, Mark Heard, Gene Heard and Charles Stewart.
Hopkins Funeral Home in Washington was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Slautterback

Richard D. Slautterback, 64, of Clayton died April 23, 2003, in Gainesville.
A native of Lewistown, Pa., he was a son of the late Marvin Duane and Sally Mae Freeman Slautterback. He was owner and president of Long Haul Truck Insurance Agency and a member of the American Underwriters Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a former resident of Elberton.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Merchant Slautter-back of the home; three sons, Ted Slautterback of Seoul, Korea, Duane Slautterback of Atlanta and Grant Slautterback of Clayton; a daughter, Sally Ann Fleming of Dewy Rose; two brothers, Bill Slautterback of Los Altos, Calif., and Gerry Slautterback of Coral Gables, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial gathering was held Saturday at the Old Clayton Inn in Clayton.
Hunter Funeral Home in Clayton was in charge of arrangements.

James Anderson

James Arnold "La La" Anderson, 76, of Greenwood, S.C., died April 27, 2003, at Self Regional Medical Center.
A native of Elbert County, he was a son of the late Lee Roy and Lucile Smith Anderson. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Greenwood Mills ­ Harris Plant. He was a member of Harris United Methodist Church, the Cooper Reed Sunday School class and the United Methodist Men's Club of the church. He was a member of the Greenwood Mills "Old Timers" and Quarter Century clubs. He was preceded in death by a son, James Randall Anderson; and a brother, Wilbur Anderson.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Fortson Anderson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Jerry Billen of Hodges, S.C., and Carol and Charlie Wiggins of Greenwood, S.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Mary Frances Anderson of Greenwood, S.C.; a sister, Sarah Nell Philips of Greenville, S.C.; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Blyth Funeral Home chapel in Greenwood, S.C., with the Revs. Emily Allen, David Cobb and James Patterson officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Harris United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8058, Greenwood, SC 29649.
Pallbearers were Mark Anderson, John Adams, Barry Phillips, Jimmy Robinson, Ansel Smith and Don Farmer. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Cooper Reed Sunday School class and the men of Harris United Methodist Church, Owen Corley, Lindsey Baker, Fletcher Harrison, Jim Clinkscales, Hoyt Stone, David Barrett and Fred Norton.
Blyth Funeral Home in Greenwood, S.C., was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Nell Payne

Dr. Nell Moorhead Payne, 86, of 5 Herndon Drive in Bowman died April 27, 2003, at Wellstar Cobb Hospital in Austell.
A native of Hart County, she was a daughter of the late Don Moorhead and Mae Taylor Moorhead. She graduated with honors from Hart County High School at the age of 15, graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor of science degree and also received her master's, six-year and doctor of education degrees from UGA. She taught mathematics at Georgia Southwestern College and in the Franklin County, Bartow County and Clarke County school systems, where she won numerous teaching awards. She was commissioned by the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church in 1982 to serve as a teaching missionary in Zimbabwe, Africa. From 1983-85, she taught at the Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Ky. She also served in mission work in the Athens-Elberton and Atlanta-Emory districts of the Methodist Church. She was a certified lay speaker, conducted Bible studies and was a Sunday School teacher. She wrote devotions for several magazines and newspapers, including The Elberton Star & Examiner. She authored a devotional book, Increase Your Faith Each Day, and was working on a second book at the time of her death. She was an active member of Bowman Methodist Church and a Sunday School teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.G. Payne; a brother, Dr. Frank Moorhead; and two sisters, Helen Don Smith and Evelyn Sease.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Donald and Nancy Payne of Lyons; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Payne and David Yarbrough of Powder Springs; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Bowman Methodist Church with the Revs. Gary Morris and Sharon Waters officiating. Burial was in Nancy Hart Memorial Park in Hartwell.
Memorials may be made to Bowman Methodist Church, Bowman, GA 30624.

Mary King

Mary Elizabeth Garner King, 65, of Canon died April 26, 2003.
A native of Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late Ezra and Liddie Peeples Garner. She worked at Georgian Cleaners in Lavonia and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Henry Garner.
Survivors include two daughters, Robbie King of Hartwell and Pattie Powers of Canon; two brothers, Jim Garner and Richard Garner, both of Canon; a sister, Frances Burdette of Canon; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Paul Creason and Eldon Massey officiating. Burial was in Double Branches Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pruitt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
