Genevieve Joy Knotts
Genevieve Joy Knotts, age 93, of Locust Grove, Georgia, passed away April 19, 2009. She was born
to her late father, Emerson Crites West and late mother, Bessie Mae Hall-West on March 5, 1916, in Parnassus, Pennsylvania . She married
Arthur Lloyd Knotts on February 25, 1935, in Smithburg, West Virginia and they lived in Morgansville, West Virginia for 51 years and then moved to Locust Grove in 1985. Genevieve attended Locust Grove United Methodist Church, where she was an active participant in the choir, LG United Methodist Women, the senior adults and other aspects of the church. Genevieve was preceded in death by her son, Arthur Emerson Knotts on February 28, 1977 and her husband, Arthur Lloyd Knotts on May 8, 1987, brother Fred Emerson West, and her sister Peg Hall.
She is survived by four children, Richard E. Knotts (Jean) of Concord, James F. Knotts (Linda) of DeLand, Florida, Marjorie Ann Hayes (Butch) of Center Point, West Virginia, and Charles G. Knotts (Lisa) of Urichsville, Ohio; twin brother Harry Bartell West of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania ; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
A memorial service for Mrs. Knotts will be Wednesday, April 22 at 11 a.m. at Locust Grove United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. Doug Gilreath officiating. Charlie Lewis Smith, Sr.
Charlie Lewis Smith, Sr., age 84, of Locust Grove, Georgia, passed away April 19, 2009. Mr. Smith was born
in Walton County, the son of the late Sarah Odum and Fonnie Jack Smith. He retired from the FAA with 42 years of service as a mechanic/electrical technician. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing hunting, gardening, cooking, and being the family handyman. He was preceded in death by several siblings.
Survivors are his wife, Myrtle Smith of Locust Grove; children, Pam Castellaw of Rex, Julie Sipe (Jim) of Jonesboro and Chuck Smith (Johnette) of Locust Grove; grandchildren, Amy, Angela, Adam, Richard, Rebecca, Jessica and Jamie; 13 great- grandchildren; sister, Essie Lee Gilreath of McDonough and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Mr. Smith was held April 21 at Southern Crescent Baptist Church in McDonough, with Rev. Tommy Kennedy officiating. Haisten Funeral Home, 770-914-8833.
James Bernard McCall
James Bernard McCall, age 73, of Locust Grove, Georgia, passed away April 19, 2009. He was born
in Pickens County, South Carolina, to the late Frank Hampton and Ollie Cobb Mc-Call and was preceded in death by siblings, Earnest, Daniel, Carlos, David McCall and Mary Farris. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and retired after 28 years in gourmet food sales. He will be remembered as a great, generous and caring person.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Shirley McCall; children, James (Brandy) McCall, Jr., Cindy (Terry) Humphrey, Phyllis (Ted) West, Patricia (Richard) Talbot, Anita (Gary) Coleman; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Olivia May, Julia Lannin, Mamie Blind and Margaret Derrick. Justin Murray, Sr.
Justin (O.P.) Murray, Sr., age 28, of Jackson, Georgia, passed away April 19, 2009. Mr. Murray was a fun-loving person who lived life to its fullest. He was a great father, who loved his children. Mr. Murray was a giving person who would do anything for anyone in need. In 1998 he saved the life of four people in a burning house in Atlanta. He was a true hero. He will be missed by many.
Mr. Murray is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Mindi Hornburg of Jackson; daughters, Hannah and Susie Murray of Jackson; son, Justin Murray, Jr. of Jackson; mother, Barbara Martinez-Cancio of Jackson; grandmother, Susan Sutton of Franklin; brother, Mitchell Murray of Stockbridge, twin brother, Joshua Murray of Hampton; sister, Rachel Sutton of Forest Park, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on April 24 at Ward’s Fairview Chapel with Pastor Terrell Hopkins officiating. Interment at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Charles H. Mason
Charles H. Mason, age 75, of Hampton, Georgia, passed away April 20, 2009. He was born
in Henry County to the late Worthy B. and Maude Moore Mason and was preceded in death by his first wife, Bobbie Ann Mason. He was a member of West Sunnyside Community Church and attended Liberty Baptist Church in Riverdale. He was a retired truck driver who had a love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating.
Survivors include his wife Gracie Mason of Hampton; daughter, Debbie (Barry) Carter of Jackson; step-son, Larry Butler of Hampton; grandchildren, Tammie (Daniel) Sorrow and Shari Peavey of Griffin; great-grand-children, Jamie and Shannon McLarty, Corey and Ashley Peavey.
Funeral services will be conducted April 22 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home. Rev. Barry Jones, Rev. Hugh Smith and Rev. Randy Wood will officiate. Interment in Griffin Memorial Gardens. Haisten Funeral Home, 770-914-8833.
Robert Randall Howard
Robert Randall Howard, age 24, of McDonough, Georgia, died April 6, 2009. He was born
in Atlanta, on January 30, 1985. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lamar "Granddaddy" Howard and great-grandparents, Harold and Beatrice "Papa and Tootsie" Randall. Robert loved music, playing both drums and guitar, and enjoyed playing computer games. He was very outgoing with a unique sense of humor.
Robert is survived by his parents, David and Renee (Randall) Howard and brother, Andrew Howard, all of McDonough; grandparents, Wallace and Barbara Randall, Douglasville, Joyce Howard, College Park; uncles and aunts, Robert and Melissa Hodge, McDonough, Chuck and Debbie Holloway, Conle; cousins, Olivia Howard and Terry Howard, both of Conley, and Justin Hodge, McDonough.
Funeral services were held on April 10 at The Chapel of Can-non Cleveland Funeral Directors, with Jim Parks officiating. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Atlanta. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors.
Mildred Pattillo Hill
Mildred Pattillo Hill, 99 of Tate, Georgia, died April 8, 2009. She was the widow of John. B. Hill and daughter of Talmon and Ora Waldrop Pattillo of Henry County. She was born
May 17, 1909 in Henry County. Her ancestors were among the early families of Georgia: Ford, Martin, Pattillo, Perkerson, Stowers, Waldrop, and Warren. She graduated from McDonough High School and attended the teacher education program at Emory University. She was teacher and principal of the Little Red House in DeKalb County prior to her marriage and moving to Tate in 1935. She was an active member of Tate United Methodist Church, organized and was president of the first PTA at Tate High School in the 1930’s, and member and chairman of the Pickens County DFCS Board for 30 years. Her community activities were extensive.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mimi Jo and Robert Butler of Bent Tree, two granddaughters, Karen and Shawn McClellan of Canton, and Ellen Butler of Kennesaw, and two great-great grandsons, Jordan and Benjamin McClellan of Canton, and one first cousin, Katherine Pattillo Wilson of Leesburg, Florida.
A graveside service was held at McDonough City Cemetery
