Alfred Clay Hayes
Alfred Clay Hayes, age 90, of McDonough, Georgia died February 3, 2006. Mr. Hayes was born
in McDonough, the son of the late Harrison Bartow and Lilla Iola Thaxton Hayes. He owned Hayes Furniture Company in McDonough for 35 plus years, was a member of the McDonough Presbyterian church where he served as a deacon, and was also a member of the Masonic Lodge # 37 and the American Legion Post #55. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII in the 5th army, 91st Division, 348th field artillery in North Africa, Italy, and France. He was known to be a fair, honest businessman who treated everyone with respect. He enjoyed farming as a young man and gardening later in life. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Annola S. Hayes; son, Tom Hayes; brother, Frank Hayes; sisters, Naomi H. Minter, Mae Hayes, Josie H. Mayo, and Faye H. Elliott.
He is survived by his daughter, Peggy (Ron) Griffin of Stockbridge; son, Sloan Hayes of McDonough; brother, Henry T. Hayes of Lawrenceville; sister, Willene Wallace of Cleveland; grandchildren, Christopher (Robyn) Hayes of Gibsonville, North Carolina, Chad (Rebecca) Hayes of Woodstock, Heather M. Hayes of McDonough; four great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews; caregivers and special friends, Clara Cornwall and Marchelle Jackson.
Services were held February 6 at McDonough Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dudley Rose, and Rev. Steve Wallace officiating. Interment Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Those who wish may make donations to the McDonough Presbyterian Church Building Fund. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.
John Francis Williams
John Francis Williams, age 66, of Stockbridge, Georgia died January 14, 2006. Mr. Williams was born
in Colon, Panama, the son of the late Joseph Aston and Lois Gray Williams. His family remembers him as a man of courage and strength, especially during his most difficult challenges in life. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always put family first. He was retired from the United States Army and a member of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dianna Lynn Carter-Williams of Stockbridge; children, Eric John Simons of New York, New York, Juana Lynn Simons of Lawrence, Kansas, Ailsa Aurelia Williams, and Avelino Leandro Williams, both of Brooklyn, New York, Michael John Williams of Miami, Florida; stepsons, G. Jonas of McDonough, Dushuan (Dubbie-son) Jonas of McDonough; sisters, Ursula Angela Haynes of Phoenix, Arizona, Winnifred Gray of Los Angeles, California, Willhel (Mina) Gray of Panama City, Panama; and nine grandchildren.
Services were held January 19 at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church. Interment Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.
Earlene Bray
Earlene Bray, age 90, of Jonesboro, Georgia died January 18, 2006. Mrs. Bray was born
in Covington, the daughter of the late Paul Weston and Laura Ann Elizabeth McCart Townsend. She was a charter member of Harvest Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother loved her Lord, dear family, and her church family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Henry Bray; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce Elizabeth and Dillon Queen; sister, Rose Nell Johnson; brothers, Carl, Charlie, Cleo, and Lewis Townsend.
She is survived by her daughter, Marie and B.L. Hall of Jonesboro; sister, Edna Smith of Stockbridge; brother, Herman A. Townsend of Stockbridge; grandchildren, Brian L. Hall, Wesley D. Queen, Donna H. Delzell, Laurel Q. Lowery; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Services were held January 21 at Harvest Baptist Church in Jonesboro, with Rev. Milton Ker, Rev. Robert Norton, and Dr. Ben Smith officiating. Interment Sherwood Memorial Park. Those who wish may sign the on-line guest registry at

Rita Elaine Gasses Peeples
Rita Elaine Gasses Peeples, age 61, of McDonough, Georgia died January 18, 2006. Mrs. Peeples was born
August 18, 1944 in Henry County, the daughter of the late Mary Flayhan and Jesse Raymond Gasses. She was a 1966 graduate of Henry County High School, was a member of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church, was a hairstylist for many years, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Gasses; and a sister, Shirley Horton.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law, David and Marcy Bridges of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; daughter and son-in-law, Monica and Denny Murphy of McDonough; grandchildren, Kayla Murphy, Austin Bridges, Jordan Bridges, Dylan Murphy and Danielle Murphy; brothers and sisters, Raymond Gasses, Tommy Gasses, Jesse Gasses, Sarah Hill, Vicki Farah, Maxine Farah, and Georgia Whittington.
Services were held January 21 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home, with Father Austin Fogarty as Celebrant. Interment McDonough City Cemetery. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Donna Rogers Michaels
Donna Rogers Michaels, age 63, of Hampton, Georgia died January 20, 2006. Mrs. Michaels was born
September 27, 1942 in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Narcissa Shields Burnett and Donald Sherwood Rogers. She was a devoted wife, mother and gran gran who enjoyed doing for others. She was preceded in death by a son, Craig S. Holloway.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Michaels of Hampton; daughter, Julie Griffin of Hampton; stepbrother, Huron Manning of Nashville, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held January 24 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Thomas Lee Bates, Sr.
Thomas Lee Bates, Sr., age 57, of Griffin, Georgia died January 22, 2006. Mr. Bates was born
October 6, 1948 in Atlanta, the son of Eunice Louise Spurlin Bates and the late Thomas Lawson Bates. In the 60’s, he was the welterweight Golden Gloves Boxing Champion in Atlanta for 9 years straight. He was of the Baptist faith, was owner of Bates Construction, loved sports, was a loving family man, and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sandra Bates of Griffin; sons, Michael Madaris of Griffin, Thomas Lee Bates Jr. and Amanda Bates of McDonough, Steven Shane Bates and July Bates of Conyers; grandchildren, Michael and Karson Madaris, Chelsea, Hannah, Danielle, Joshua, Christopher, and Austin Bates; brothers, Ronnie and Rhonda Bates of Thomaston, Gary and Elaine Bates of Morrow; sisters, Diane and William Alexander of Haralson, Janice and David Heard of Griffin; mother, Eunice Bates of Morrow.
Services were held January 25 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home, with Pastor Jason Lyle officiating. Entombment Haisten Eastlawn Memorial Park. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Andrew Charles Floyd
Andrew Charles Floyd, age 63, of McDonough, Georgia died January 23, 2006. Mr. Floyd was born
in McDonough, the son of the late Joseph Campbell (J.C.) and Mabel Trellis Key Floyd. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of McDonough and retired from the Atlanta Gas Light Company.
He is survived by a special friend, Gwen F. Thomas of McDonough; sister, JoAnne (Bennie) Miller of McDonough; aunts, Alice Key Burnette of Jonesboro, Evelyn Floyd Brannan of Jackson, Sarah Key of Peachtree City; nephew, David Franklin Miller of Fire-stone, Colorado; great-nephews, Andrew Garrett Miller of San Antonio, Texas , Michael Vincent Miller, and Jonathon David Miller, both of Firestone, Colorado; numerous cousins.
Services were held January 25 in the chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors, with Rev. Mack Riley, and Dr. C.R. Hill, Jr. officiating. Interment Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Maxine E. Duncan
Maxine E. Duncan, age 75, of Stockbridge, Georgia died January 25, 2006. She was born
in Wyoming County, West Virginia to the late Albert S. and Virginia Moore Simmons.
She leaves behind her husband, Harry Lee Duncan of Stockbridge; son, Gratt S. Duncan of Griffin; daughter, Terry Lynn Moody of Stockbridge, Patty Duncan Walker of Mullins, West Virginia; sisters, Edith Cox of Hampton, Delores Cheslock of West Virginia, Shirley Stewart of Stockbridge, Mary Alice Salargano of New Jersey; brothers, Larry Simmons of Cleveland, Tennessee, Albert Simmons of Griffin; seven grandchildren, Tina Maxine Duncan, Timothy Stephen Duncan of Nebraska, Bonnie Sue Gillespie of West Virginia, Gratt Duncan Pour of Locust Grove, Greta Donita Pour of Stockbridge, James Caleb and Lynn Pour of Hampton, Harry Stephen “Bear” and Angie Duncan of Locust Grove; 11 great-granddaughters, Meagan, Mary, Katie, Emily of West Virginia, Rachele of Nebraska, Holly, Haley, Stormy, Olivia, Maxine of Stockbridge, Phalicity of Hampton, and Phoebe of Locust Grove.

Robert H. Gardner
Robert H. (Bob) Gardner, age 88, of McDonough, Georgia died January 27, 2006. Mr. Gardner was born
in Springfield, Missouri, the son of Robert Henry and Ethel Gladys Thompson Gardner, Sr. He was a member of Timberridge Presbyterian Church, an Army Veteran of WWII and a member of the Atlanta Orchid Society and served as an American Orchid Society Judge. He retired form Snapper as a Quality Control Engineer.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Stanton Gardner; sons, Rick and Cynthia Gardner of Fayetteville, Larry and Teresa Gardner of McDonough; four grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild.
Services were held January 30 in the chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors, with Rev. Rachel Knoll officiating. Interment Timberridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Patricia Gay Johnston Early
Patricia Gay Johnston Early, age 47, of New Orleans, Louisiana died January 7, 2006. Mrs. Early was born
October 3, 1958 in Fulton County. She loved her family, animals, shopping and movies. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Plennie Johnston.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Joseph Early of New Orleans; mother, Janie Callaway Johnston of Locust Grove; sister, Linda Anders of Florida; and brother, Robert P. Johnston III of Locust Grove.
Services were held January 14 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home, with Rev. Dan Jones officiating. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
