Myrtis Wilson
SUMMERVILLE, Ga. - Myrtis H. Wilson died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at a local nursing home. She was 97.
She was a native Chattooga Countian, member of Subligna Baptist Church, and widow of Henry Wilson.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Subligna Baptist Church with ministers Ken Johnson and Steve Helms officiating.
Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
The body will be at J.D. Hill Funeral Home from 5 p.m. today to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Susan Tipps
RESACA, Ga. - Susan Griffin Tipps died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at her home. She was 59.
She had been a school teacher for 25 years; having taught for almost 22 years at Red Bud Elementary School.
She was a member of the Georgia Association of Educators and the national Educators Association.
She was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, the Seekers Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Porter and Gladys Tyson Griffin.
Survivors include her husband, Horace Ross Tipps; four daughters, Julie Maddox, Rome, Ga., Jim Miller, Armurchee, Ga., Joanna Mashburn, Cartersville, Ga., and Rebecca Tipps, Resaca; one brother, James R. Griffin, Denton, Texas; and three grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 4 p.m. at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Cunningham and the rev. Kenneth Hayes officiating.
'Burial will follow in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will be today after 2 p.m. at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, Calhoun, Ga., and 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Red Bud Elementary School, or the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Charles Watts
Charles R. Watts, Sr., of Chickamauga, Ga., died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. He was 88.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Watts.
He was retired from Combustion Engineering and was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ida Watts; two sons, Charles Watts, Jr., Chickamauga, and William Watts, LaFayette, Ga.; one daughter, Betty Sloan, Wichita, Kan.; one sister, Beatrice Ellis, Chattanooga; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at J. Avery Bryan Funeral Home, Chickamuaga, with the Rev. Jim Sloan officiating.
Burial will follow in LaFayette Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Charlie Truitt Jr.
DALTON, Ga. - Charlie J. "Chunk' Truitt Jr. died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in a local hospital. He was 50.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Willis Funeral Home, Dalton, with Bishop Stephen Thomas and other ministers officiating.
Burial will be in Hopewell Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
James Terrell
James Edward Terrell of Rossville, Ga., died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, in a local hospital. He was 60.
Arrangements will be announced by the Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway.
Laura Summers
DALTON, Ga. - Laura Williams Summers died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, in an area hospital. She was 76.
A native of Whitfield County, she was the widow of Henry Summers and the mother of the late Henry Summers Jr. and Carolyn Grace.
Survivors include four daughters, Alice Hammock, Resaca, Ga., Linda Cozart and Teresa Kilpatrick, both of Dalton, and Cathy Maines, Lenoir City, Tenn.; four sons, Jerry Williams and Bobby Summers, both of Dalton, Johnny Summers, Resaca, and Eddie Summers, Commerce, Ga.; 29 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Beulah Land Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Blackstock and the Rev. Jack Hankins officiating.
Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today after 1 p.m. at Ponders Funeral Home, Dalton.
Clara Strickland
RINGGOLD, Ga. - Clara Estelle Lynn Strickland died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, in a local nursing home. She was 85.
A lifelong resident of Ringgold, she was retired from the Peerless Woolen Mills and the Sweetwater Rug Co.
She was a member of the Center Point Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Ben Strickland.
Survivors include two daughters, Bobbie Strickland of Dothan, Ala., and Florine Shadwick of Ringgold; two sons, Leon and Carl Strickland, both of Ringgold; two sisters, Annie Mae Petty of Ringgold, and Jessie Lynn of Chattanooga; one brother, Ernest Lynn of Chattanooga; and 15 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., with the Rev. Gene Hudson and the Rev. Roy Gentru Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in the Gordy Memorial Cemetery.
Claude Stoker
LaFAYETTE, Ga. - Claude Richard Stoker died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his home in Chickamauga. He was 63.
He was born in Walker County and was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Stoker; son, Craig Stoker, Flintstone, Ga.; daughter, Belinda Oetzel, East Peoria, Ill.; three stepsons, John Stoker, Kensington, Ga., Paul Stoker, Albertville, Ala., and Carl Stoker, Rossville, Ga.; two sisters, Etta West and Ruth Swafford, Chickamauga; nine grandchildren; and great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at LaFayette Funeral Home with ministers Ronnie Millican and James Helton officiating.
Burial will be in Coulter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 6 p.m. today.
Allie Stocks
DALTON, Ga. - Allie Morgan Stocks died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998. She was 81.
She was the widow of Lawrence Stocks Sr.
Survivors include her two sons, Lawrence Stocks, Dalton, and Ron Stocks, Rome, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Love Funeral Home with minister Allen Martin officiating.
Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.
