Gertrude Underwood
Mrs. Gertrude R. Underwood, 89, of Hogansville, died September 27 at her home.
Mrs. Underwood, born December. 24, 1911 in Lanett, Ala., was the daughter of the late Roy and Nettie Cane Wingett. She had lived in Troup County most of her life and had lived in Hogansville for the past 25 years. She was a member of the Baptist church and retired from the Dixie Division of West Point Pepperell.
Survivors include her husband, Sager A. Underwood of Hogansville; a daughter and son - in - law, Glenda and Arnold Yancey of LaGrange; a son and daughter - in - law, Howard and Dorothy Underwood of Phenix City, Ala.; four grandchildren, Michael Underwood of Acworth, Christopher Underwood of Phenix City, Teri Callahan of Pine Mountain, and Candy Toney of Hogansville; and six great - grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville with the Rev. Andrew Overby officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

Mason Wilkerson
Mason Wilkerson, 51, formerly of Hogansville, died September 25 in Atlanta.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary United Methodist Church in Hogansville with the Rev. Gregory Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The cortege will leave at 12:45 p.m. from Thrash and Sons Funeral Home.

Charles S. Waller Sr.
Charles S. Waller Sr., 94, of 5830 West Point Road, died September 25 at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Waller, born June 26, 1907 in Columbus, was the son of the late Samuel Mathews and Hazel Rosebud Thomason Waller. He had lived here most of his life and was a member of Oakside Baptist Church. Mr. Waller was the owner and operator of the Cake Box Bakery from 1945 - 1979. He was a Chief Petty officer in the United States Navy during World War II where he was in charge of the bakery at Camp Perry, Va. Mr. Waller was the oldest World War II veteran in Troup County.
Survivors include his son, Charles F. Waller of LaGrange; a daughter and son - in - law, Suzanne and Clarence Smith of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren and their spouses, Ruby Waller and John Morris of Queen Creek, Arizona, Suzanne Waller and Charles W. Wall of Carrollton, Mae Frances Waller and Trez Turner of Columbia, S.C., Charles Samuel and Tracy Waller of LaGrange and Hazel Waller and Emory Crowe of Hogansville; nine great - grandchildren; a brother, W.T. Waller of Elberta, Ala.; and a special friend, Gwen Boyce of LaGrange. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Pearl Cardwell Waller, and a son, Samuel Marion Waller.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hunter - Allen - Myhand Funeral Home with Dr. Ralph A. Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will be at his home and will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charity or the Disabled American Veterans Fund at Community Bank and Trust in memory of Mr. Waller.

George H. Cantrell
George Henry Cantrell, 58, of 119 North Lake Drive, died September 26 at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Cantrell, born February 23, 1943 in Jacksonville, Fla., was the son of Shirley Cantrell of Harrison, Tenn., and the late George T. Cantrell. He had lived in LaGrange most of his life and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board. He retired with over 20 years of service as laundry manager of West Georgia Medical Center. Mr. Cantrell was the assistant treasurer and adoption chairman of the LaGrange'Troup County Humane Society.
Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Cheryl R. Cantrell of LaGrange; two daughters and sons - in - law, Michele and Tony Howard of San Antonio, Texas and Kelly and Steve Rulis of Atlanta; two sons and daughters - in - law, Sean and Tammy Cantrell of Chattanooga, Tenn; and Brannon and Susan Cantrell of Jasper, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Dustin, Chelsea, Maegan, Lauren, Nicolas, and Nicholas; a sister and brother - in - law, Laraine and David Percy of Harrison, Tenn; a brother - in - law, Frank Tatum of Chattanooga, Tenn; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and by his sister, Claudia Tatum.
The family will be at his home at 119 North Lake Drive and will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church or to the LaGrange - Troup County Humane Society in memory of Mr. Cantrell.

Miss Cora Mae Cofield of 106 Addie St., died at Hospice LaGrange.

Mrs. Gladys McRae
Mrs. Gladys Buchanan McRae, 87, formerly of Manchester, died September 24, at her home in LaGrange.
Mrs. McRae, had lived in LaGrnage for the past three years. She was born in Phenix City, Ala., was the daughter of the late Della McPhearson Buchanan and James Edward McRae. She retired from Platex International after 25 years and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. Mrs. McRae was the past Worthy Matron of Stephens Chapter #399 Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two daughters, Sybil Rayburn of LaGrange and Sheryl Smith of Alpharetta; six grandchildren, and four great - grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Edward McRae and her son, Dale Edward McRae.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Manchester City Cemetery.

Clarence H. Knighton
Clarence H. Knighton, 77, of Gibson, died Sunday at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell.
Mr. Knighton, a native of Troup County, was a United States Navy veteran, having served three years in World War II. He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a member of the Mens Adult Sunday School class. He graduated from Union University in Jackson, Tenn. Mr. Knighton was a teacher, a coach, and he worked for the Y.M.C.A. and the Recreation Department in Jefferson County. He was an avid golfer and a member of many civic clubs.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rebecca D. Knighton of Gibson; a son, Bruce Knigton of Lavonia; a daughter, Becky Sumrall of Nashville, Tenn., a brother, Bobby Knighton of Hogansville and a sister, Ruby Powell, of LaGrange.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mill Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Hadden and the Rev. Richard Bielski officiating. Burial was in the Gibson City cemetery in Gibson.
Contributions may be sent to Mill Creek Baptist Church in care of Joe Dean Usry, P.O. Box 111 Gibson, Ga. 30810.

T. Hugh Owensby
Thomas Hugh Owensby, 68, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., died September. 24, in Keystone Heights, Fla.
Mr. Owensby, born January 8, 1933 in LaGrange, was the son of the late Paul Hugh and Mary Kate Reese Owensby. He retired after 23 years of service from Jacksonville Electric Authority. He attended Georgia Military College and graduated from Jacksonville University. Mr. Owensby was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Barbara Jean Lester Owensby of Green Cove Springs; two sons, Michael Hugh Owensby and Charles Marvin Owensby, both of Green Cove Springs; two daughters and two sons - in - law, Mary Jean and Cecil Holder of Jacksonville, Fla., and Barbara Ann and Charles Street of Ontario, Canada.; three grandchildren, Lauren Nichole Owensby, Amanda Kate Holder and Will Street; and a brother, Donald Reese Owensby of Vallejo, Calf.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Shadowlawn cemetery with Pastor Tom Owensby officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday morning from 9 until the funeral service begins at 11.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Heart Association in memory of Mr. Owensby.

Joseph W. Johnson
Joseph William Johnson of Roanoke, Ala., died Sept. 23, in Panama City Beach, Fla.
Mr. Johnson, born Jan 16, 1951 in LaGrange, was the son of the late Floyd and Betty Denney Johnson. He was a United States Army veteran serving two tours of duty in Vietnam as a combat engineer with the 101st Airborne Division. Mr. Johnson was a industrial insulation installer.
Survivors include a son and daughter - in - law, Jason and Chrssy Johnson of Newnan; three grandchildren, Haley, Hunter and Hannah Johnson of Newnan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Hurston Johnson.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Striffler - Hamby Mortuary with the Rev. Brandon Brooks officiating.
Visitation will be this evening from 6 to 8 at the mortuary.
The family will be at #10 Hood St.

Mrs. Maxine Cornell
Mrs. Maxine Smith Boatwright Cornell, 79, of LaGrange, died Sept. 23, at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mrs. Cornell, born August 19, 1922 in LaGrange, was the daughter of Thomas Maxie and Ada Hammett Smith. She had lived here all of her life and was a 1942 graduate of Elon College. She was an active member and volunteer in several church and community activities. Mrs. Cornell was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was a former member of the Altar Guild and charter member of the Reviewers Guild. She was also a board member of Camp Viola and Pink Lady at West Georgia Medical Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Marie Boatwright Hoffman of Atlanta, Elizabeth Boatwright Bell of Gainesville; a son, J.K. Boatwright III and his wife Lisa of LaGrange; eight grandchildren, Anne Marie Hoffman, Amanda Hoffman, Andrew Hoffman, Bryan Bell, Grey Bell, Rebecca Bell, Lindsay Boatwright, and Alyssa Boatwright; a sister, Agnes Smith Brownell of Greenville, S.C.; a brother and sister - in - law, Elton and Peggy Smith of Dothan, Ala.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Shadowlawn cemetery with the Rev. Greg Porterfield and Dr. Stuart Gulley officiating.
The family will be at the residence of J.K. Boatwright III, 1006 Country Club Drive, and will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at their residence.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to LaGrange College Scholarship Fund, 601 Board St., in memory of Mrs. Cornell.
