Virginia S. Powers
Mrs. Virginia Smith Powers, 78, of Hogansville, died Thursday at her home.
Mrs. Powers, born July 31, 1923 in Roanoke, Ala., was the daughter of the late John Wesley Smith and Lois Bishop Smith. She had lived in Hogansville since 1936 and retired as a beautician. Mrs. Powers was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Hogansville.
Survivors include a sister, Tina Smith Newton of Charleston, S.C., a brother, John Bunyan Smith of Paradise, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her sister, Anna Ruth Hester.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McKibben and Sons Funeral Home with Dr. Jimmy Brown officiating. Burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Leigh, formerly on Hogansville died Thursday in Columbus
The family will be at the home of her sister, Laura Russell at 101 Burden Drive in Hogansville.

Arnie C. Adcock
Arnie C. Adcock, 90, of Roanoke, Ala., died Wednesday at East Alabama Regional Medical Center in Opelika, Ala.
Mr. Adcock, born Sept. 19. 1912, in Randolph County, Ala., was the son of the late Dee Eston and Tweedie May Adcock. He was in the construction industry and was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Brazell Adcock of Roanoke, Ala.; two sons, Millard Adcock of LaGrange and Murphy Adcock of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a sister, Liza Burdette of LaGrange; four grandchildren and four great - grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert D. Adcock.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. CST at Quattlebaum Funeral Home in Roanoke with the Rev. Don Quick officiating. Burial will be in White’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening at the funeral home from 5 pm. to 8 p.m. CST.

Elease Gresham
Mrs. Elease Gresham, 66, of Atlanta, died Wednesday.
Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Ronnie and Sharon Harris; three sisters, Juanita Broughton, Carrie B. Harden and Lillie H. Coleman; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday at White Plains United Methodist Church in the St. Mark’s Community with the Rev. Ed Geter officiating. Burial will be in the Camp Ground Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Young Funeral Home at 1107 Hank Aaron Drive, S.W., in Atlanta from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

Heland Hollis
Mrs. Heland Hollis, 95, of West Wyngate Drive in LaGrange, formerly of West Point, died Thursday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mrs. Hollis, born Dec. 18, 1907, in Lee County, Ala., was the daughter of the late Charles and Mae Parker Riddle. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Davidson Baptist Church in West Point. She lived in West Point most of her life and operated Shellnut Grocery for many years. She was gifted in needlework.
Survivors include two daughters and a son - in - law, Brenda and Cecil Royster of LaGrange and Barbara Hollis of Powder Springs; a niece, Betty Head of West Point; two nephews, Melvin and Patsy Lisle, and Charles Riddle, all of Opelika., Ala. She was preceded in death by he husband Thornton, “Doc” Hollis.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Davidson Baptist Church in West Point with the Revs. Robert Burnett and Billy McCullough officiating. Burial will be in Marseilles cemetery in West Point.
The family will be at the home of her daughter and son - in - law, Brenda and Cecil Royster at 108 West Wyngate Drive in LaGrange and will receive friends at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point this evening from 6 until 9.

Judith J. Sampler
Mrs. Judith Jarrell Sampler, 63, of Greenville died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at Alvista Care Home in Greenville.
Mrs. Sampler, born Dec. 8, 1939, in Columbus, was the daughter of the late Jake B. Jr. and Sara Emily Norris Jarrell. She was a graduate of Greenville High School, attended Emory University, Emory at Oxford and graduated from LaGrange College. She was a member of Greenville Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Emily Elise and Jerry Slaton of Albertville, Ala.; a granddaughter and grandson - in - law, Judi Slaton Norton and Ronnie Norton of Grove Oak, Ala.; a grandson, Arthur Slaton of Albertville, Ala.; and two brothers and sisters - in - law, Dr. Robert J. and Linda Jarrell of Buchanan and Jake B. III and Rosemary Jarrell of LaGrange.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Greenville City cemetery with the Rev. Marian Shivers officiating.

Louise Fleming Smith
Mrs. Louise Fleming Smith, 89, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs.
Mrs. Smith, born Oct.. 13, 1913, was the daughter of the late Oscar and Maggie Sumpter Fleming.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Smith.
Private graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Meadoway Gardens with her nephew, the Rev Marvin Brand, officiating.

Henderson Thornton
Henderson 'Wayne' Thornton of 911 Hines Rd., died Sunday.
Mr. Thornton, a native of Troup County, was the son of Tilda Mae Thornton and the late Robert Thornton. He was a member of Louise United Methodist Church and an employee of the Troup County School System.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include three sons, Henderson Thornton Cameron of Union City, Tommie Lee Newsome of LaGrange and DeWayne Thornton of Chicago; a daughter, Lucille Gray of LaGrange; four sisters and three brothers - in - law, Annie and Talbert Dyer of Evanston, Ill., Margaret Fitzpatrick of Louise, Mable and Leroy Bray of Mountville, Beatrice and Bernie Jackson of LaGrange; six brothers and five sisters - in - law, James and Eva Carter of Atlanta, Willie and Lucille Thornton, Walter Thornton and the Rev. Lonnie and Sybrenna Thornton, all of Mountville, Joseph and Catherine Thornton of LaGrange, and Tommy and Dorothy Thornton of Louise; eight grandchildren and a special friend, Cora McClain.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Louise United Methodist Church with the Rev. W.E. Geter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

James E. Mitchell
James E. Mitchell, 82, of 1115 Young's Mill Road, died Monday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Mitchell, born October 16, 1918 in Tazewell, Va., was the son of the late James William and Nannie B. Baldwin Mitchell. He had lived in LaGrange most of his life and retired from the Dunson Division of West Point Pepperell. Mr. Mitchell was a member and deacon of Shoal Creek Baptist Church and a United States Army veteran of World War II, He received the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife, Odessa Mitchell of LaGrange; two daughters and sons - in - law, Ann and David Wendler of Tupelo, Miss., Faye and E. J. Cavender of LaGrange; eight grandchildren; 11 great - grandchildren; two brothers and sisters - in - law, Crockett and Dot Mitchell of LaGrange and Hensel and Thelma Mitchell of Tampa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hunter - Allen - Myhand Funeral Home with the Rev. Anthony Hovey officiating. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will be at their home at 1115 Young's Mill Road and will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
