L. Gwen Prescott
L. Gwen Prescott of LaGrange, former probate judge of Troup County, died Monday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Judge Prescott, born December 13, 1947, in LaGrange, was the son of the Rev. R. C. and Bernice Knight Prescott of Hogansville. He was a 1965 graduate of LaGrange High School attended LaGrange College and was a 1977 graduate of Gupton - Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta. A licensed funeral director and embalmer, he was a former manager of Fling Funeral Home and was coroner of Troup County from 1981 until 1983. He was elected probate judge in 1983 and served until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in LaGrange.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Elaine Benefield Prescott of LaGrange; a son and daughter - in - law, Shane and Jennifer Prescott of Hogansville; his mother - in - law, Sarah Benefield of LaGrange; and two grandchildren, Hope Louise Prescott and Shawn Michael Prescott.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Chapman and Jay Knight officiating. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery. The body will be at the church from 2 this afternoon until the funeral hour Wednesday.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 this evening at the church.
The Claude A. McKibben & Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville is in charge of arrangements.

Tom Bordona
Tom Bordona, 81, of Riverbank, Calif., died Friday at his home.
Mr. Bordona, born May 1, 1919, was a native of Farrell, Pa., and lived in Riverbank for 64 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from Hershey Foods Oakdale after 18 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6420, the Riverbank Historical Society and Saint Francis of Rome Catholic Church. He served on the Riverbank Elementary School Board of Trustees for 24 years.
Survivors include his children, Tom Bordona Jr. of Modesto, Calif., Steve Bordona of Riverbank, David Bordona of LaGrange and Adrina Panero of Riverbank; a sister, Margarita Kramer of San Francisco; brothers, Julio Bordona and Ulpiano Bordona of Madrid, Spain; six grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
Rosary services were at 6 p.m. Monday and The Mass of Christian Burial was at 9 this morning at Saint Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Riverbank. Burial will be in Saint Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Riverbank Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6420, 6721 Eight St., Riverbank, Calif. 95367, in memory of Mr. Bordona.
Riverbank Memorial Chapel in Riverbank, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Askew Frost
Bessie Askew Frost, formerly of LaGrange, died Thursday in Decatur.
Local survivors include a sister, Martha Ann Askew; three brothers, Ishmeal Askew, Robert Askew and Frank Askew, all of LaGrange; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be Saturday in Decatur.

Mrs. Ruthie J. Bright
Mrs. Ruthie Jewell Bright, 79, of Florence Hand Home, formerly of 512 Miller St., died Sunday.
Mrs. Bright, born September 25, 1921, in Heard County, was the daughter of the late Merrett and Carrie Abner Daniel She had lived here most of her life, was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Tabernacle.
Survivors include her husband, Early D. Bright; a daughter and son - in - law, Sandra and Lanny Sledge, all of LaGrange; four grandchildren, Gary Sledge of LaGrange, Randy Sledge and Rodney Sledge, both of Atlanta, and Lisa Mitchell of Newnan; four great - grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Mary Kelton of Lanett, Ala.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Baptist Tabernacle with the Rev. J. C. McMillian officiating. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of her daughter and son - in - law, Sandra and Lanny Sledge, at 221 Beechwood Circle and will receive friends this evening from 6 until 8 at Striffler - Hamby Mortuary at 1010 Mooty Bridge Road.

Dorothy Louise Downs
Dorothy Louise Downs, 91, of Shiloh, a former long - time resident of Lee's Crossing in LaGrange, died Saturday at her home.
Graveside funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Shadowlawn cemetery with the Rev. Lamar Truitt officiating.
Mrs. Downs was born Feb. 6, 1910 in Oglethorpe County, daughter of the late Frazier D. and Lillie Melton Worley. She was the widow of Ernest Edward Brown and Bruce Downs. She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Edward E. Brown, and a sister, Cassie Wright.
Survivors include her daughter and son - in - law, Bobby and Joe Durham of Shiloh; four sisters, Myrtie Lee of Shiloh, Flossie Denny of Austell, Era Floyd and Ruby Hoxsie, both of Pine Mountain; five grandchildren, Rhonda Durham Lipp of Shiloh, Ernest Roy 'Bud' Durham of Columbus, Donna Kay Durham Barry of Waverly Hall, John Mark Durham of Dawsonville and David E. Brown of LaGrange; 12 great - grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, .
Arrangements are by Striffler - Hamby Mortuary, 1010 Mooty Bridge Road.

Howard Dowell
Howard Eugene Dowell of 112 Locust St., died Wednesday at his home.
Mr. Dowell, a native of LaGrange was the son of the late Pauline Davis and was a construction worker.
Survivors include two daughters, Mercy Dowell of Norfolk, Va., and Tina Dowell of Auburn, Ala., four sons and two daughters - in - law, the Rev Robert and Alicia Dowell of Lawton, Ok., Howard Dowell II of Detroit. Mich., Ray Cameron of Auburn, and Michael and Valentina Norris of Opelika, Ala; a sister and brother - in - law, Betty and Shellie Dowell; a brother, Phillip Davis, all of LaGrange; nine grandchildren, Michael Dowell, Marcus Dowell, Marcellous Dowell, and Maurice Dowell, all of Lawton, Ok., Quandarius Dowell and Ray Cameron Jr. both of Auburn, Ala., and Shanoua Torbert, Michael Norris Jr., and Demerius Norris, all of Opelika, Ala.; a niece, De'Vita and Larry Davis of LaGrange; four nephews, Dexter Ware, Stacey Ware, Marco Ware and Thaddeus Dowell, all of LaGrange; three great - nieces; four aunts, Bretha Crawford, Nellie Hugley, and Lorrine Hardnett, all of LaGrange; and Beatrice Wilson of New York; and a close friend, Sharon Boykin of LaGrange; and other relatives.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ at 500 Lee St., with the Rev. Mickey McCauley officiating. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of his sister, Betty Dowell, at 609 Daniel St.

John R. Nystrom
John R. Nystrom, 59, of Atlanta died Wednesday.
Survivors include four sons, Matthew Nystrom of Kennesaw, Michael Nystrom of Birmingham, Ala., and John Nystrom and Robert Nystrom of California; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Rowe of LaGrange; two sisters, Patricia Herring of LaGrange and Carol Turlich of Lumberton Miss.; a brother, James Rowe of Idaho; six grandchildren, Robert, Rebecca, Priscilla, Barrett, Alan and Bailey; and a companion, Kathleen Crawford. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Darby,
Memorials services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Atlanta with Dr. Robert F. Sims officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 until 4 at H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill Chapel at 1020 Spring St., N.W., in Atlanta, 404 - 876 - 1022.

Miss Mary Dunson
Miss Mary Dunson, 51, of 1114 Troup St., died Tuesday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Miss Dunson, born July 21, 1949, in Troup County, was the daughter of Mrs. Margaret Dunson and the late Willie C. Dunson. She was a graduate of Ethel W. Kight High School, a textile machine operator and member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include four brothers, Willie C. Dunson Jr. of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Charlie Dunson, Michael Dunson and Willie Irvin, all of LaGrange; four sisters, Priscilla Lee of Decatur, Gloria Harrison and Pearlie Mae Phillips, both of LaGrange, and Josephine Swanson of Atlanta; two brothers - in - law, Bobby Harrison and Charlie Phillips; five sisters - in - law, Vanessa Dunson, Marilyn Dunson, Sharon Dunson and Carolyn Irvin, all of LaGrange, and Mattie Dunson of Ypsilanti, Mich; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Rising Grove Baptist Church at 209 East Crovat St., with the Rev. Jesse Adams officiating. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.
The family will be at her home.

Ira M. Tigner
Ira M. Tigner of 46 East Beasley Road, Hogansville, died July 15 in Meriwether County.
Mr. Tigner, a native of Meriwether County, was the son of the late Ira and Essie Tigner. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of several civic and religious organizations. He was a deacon of Rocky Mt. Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Polly Mae Tigner; four sons, Carl Tigner of Hogansville and Minister Ira L. Tigner, Ronald Tigner, and Joe Calvin Tigner, all of LaGrange; two daughters, Mrs. Sharon Strozier of Mountville and Mrs. Angela Ratliff of West Point; two brothers, the Rev. Cleo Tigner of Atlanta and Robert Tigner of Luthersville; a sister, Mrs. Lucinda Martin of Luthersville; 24 grandchildren, and six great - grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at their home.
West Georgia Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
