Mrs. Helen L. Phillips
Mrs. Helen L Phillips, 89, of LaGrange died Monday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mrs. Phillips, born June 3, 1911, in Troup County, was the daughter of the late Tom L. and Pinkie Gay Lanier. She had lived here for the past 20 years and was a member of Pine View Baptist Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Shadowlawn cemetery with the Rev. Sam Mitchell officiating.

Mrs. Mary Shannon
Mrs. Mary Chlorine Shannon, 82, of 209 Lakeshore Way died Monday at Hospice LaGrange.
Mrs. Shannon, born July 1, 1918, in Arkansas, was the daughter of the late Rom and Violet Miller Hicks. She had lived here since 1985 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Broad Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include three daughters and a son - in - law, Sue and Jim Bingham of LaGrange, Mary N. Shannon of Continental Divide, N.M., and Catherine King of Grants, N.M.; five grandchildren, Brian Bingham of LaGrange, Tracy King of Las Vegas, Nev.. Michael King of Grants, N.M., Laura Kennedy of Columbus and Nancy King of Grants, N.M.; and three great - grandchildren; Shawn King, Amanda King and Nathan Kennedy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvie O. Shannon.
Funeral services will be Thursday at the Choctow Church of Christ near Clinton, Ark.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6 until 8 at Striffler - Hamby Mortuary at 1010 Mooty Bridge Road.

Mrs. Mary L. Golden
Mrs. Mary L. Golden, 75, of LaGrange, formerly of Marietta, died Sunday.
Mrs. Golden, born in Cobb County, was the daughter of the late George M. and Lucy Clackum Gentry. She retired from Cobb Exchange Bank.
Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Elizabeth and Drayton Fowler; and a sister, Mrs. James Daley, all of LaGrange; three grandchildren, two great - grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Kennesaw Memorial Park cemetery in Marietta with the Rev. David Brackman officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund in LaGrange.

Mrs. Ruby Hardnett
Mrs. Ruby Lee Robertson Hardnett, 81, 270 Mountain Lane in Covington died Saturday at Social Circle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Hardnett, born August 13, 1919, in Meriwether County, was the daughter of the late Henry and Annie Bell Robertson. She was a retired licenced practical and private duty nurse and was a member of Mt. Pleasant CME Church in Mountville.
Survivors include two daughters, Annie K. Vaden of Detroit, Mich., and Shirley A. Hackett of Covington; a son and daughter - in - law, Charles H. and Bernice Hardnett of Louisville, Ky.; 10 grandchildren, Felix Hackett, Charles Hardnett, Derek Hardnett, Zachary Hines, Lynn Hines and Leon Hines, all of Atlanta, Sean Hines and Chantel Vaden of Detroit, Dana Hardnett Smith of Compton Calif., and Keith Hines of Texas; 24 great - grandchildren; six great - great - grandchildren; a sister, Minnie Pearl Parham of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two brothers, Charlie Robertson of Atlanta and Glenn Robertson of LaGrange; an uncle, Willie Robertson of Birmingham, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews, other family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant CME church in Mountville with the Rev. Lovett Thornton officiating. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of her brother, Glenn Robertson, at 302 Cooley Road.

Benjamin Richard Matthews, Jr.
Benjamin Richard Matthews, Jr., 57, of Cedar Hill, TN, formerly of LaGrange, died Friday, January 26, 2001 at Select Specialty Hospital in Nashville, TN.
Mr. Matthews was born on October 6, 1943 in Sandersville, Georgia. He was the son of Katie Marie Howell Matthews and the late Benjamin Richard Matthews, Sr., of LaGrange. Mr. Matthews was a 1961 graduate of LaGrange High School and attended LaGrange College. In 1984, he retired from the United States Army as a Sergeant Major with 22 years of service. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and received numerous military awards and decorations, the highest being the Legion of Merit.
Survivors include: His wife, Linda Matthews of Cedar Hill, TN; his Mother, Katie Marie Matthews of Greenville, GA; a sister and brother - in - law, Mary and Raymond Steele of Greenville, GA.; a brother and sister - in - law, Johnny and Kathy Matthews of LaGrange; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted on January 30, 2001 at the Robertson County Funeral Home in Springfield, Tennessee, with Pastors John McCarty and John Bolton officiating.
A military funeral and interment will take place at Arlington National cemetery on February 7, 2001, in Arlington, Virginia.

James J. Duncan
James Jackson Duncan, 83, of 502 Broad St., died Sunday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Duncan, born February 14, 1917, in Clarksburg, W.Va., was the son of the late George Lee and Gertrude Smith Duncan. He was a Marine veteran of World War II, having served as a radar operator in the Southwest Pacific and Vella La Vella. He had lived here since 1969 and retired from the Fidelity and Deposit Company of Baltimore, Md., as resident vice - president of the Atlanta branch for 40 years. He also worked as a consultant for Hammond - Hudson - Holder. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Allison Johnston Duncan of LaGrange; a daughter and son - in - law, Amy D. and John M. Jackson of Decatur; three granddaughters, Shannon Laine Duncan of LaGrange; and Sarah Elizabeth Jackson and Nikki Ruth Jackson, both of Decatur; and many nieces, and nephews in Clarksburg, W.Va.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Conine officiating.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the services.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Camp Viola or Twin Cedars in memory of Mr. Duncan.

Mrs. Ruth Moore Pacheco, 79, of 815 North Greeenwood St., died Saturday at Florence Hand Home.
Mrs. Pacheco, born September 10, 1921, in Canton, was the daughter of the late Charlie F. and Zulu Elizabeth Fowler Ogles. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was a former employee of Fieldcrest Mills and a member of Callaway Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Emily Holley of LaGrange; three sons and daughters - in - law, Ronnie and Ola Moore of Forston, Donnie and Ann Moore of Manchester, Tenn., and John and Sena Moore of El Pasco, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 13 great - grandchildren; two brothers and sisters - in - law, Charles and Jean Ogles and Billy and Kate Ogles, all of LaGrange; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Hillview East cemetery with the Rev. Sid Shelnutt officiating. Burial will be in Hillview East Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 until 9 at Striffler - Hamby Mortuary, 1010 Mooty Bridge Road.

Reid Thompson
Reid Thompson, 87, of Hogansville died this morning at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Thompson, born October 20, 1913, in Heard County, was the son of the late Odell and Mary Parham Thompson. He lived in Hogansville most of his live and was the retired owner of Thompson Gulf Service and co - owner of Troup Garage. For the past seven years he was employed at Piggly Wiggly in Hogansville. He was a former Hogansville city councilman and was a member of First Baptist Church of Hogansville where he was a deacon and member of the choir.
Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Marie and Ken Hines; a son and daughter - in - law, Maynard and Sue Thompson, all of Hogansville; a sister, Ada Mae Caldwell of Newnan; three grandchildren, Andrea and Chris Otwell of LaGrange, Jim and Becky Hines of Tampa, Fla., and Joe and Tammi Thompson of Hogansville; and three great - grandchildren, Austin, Lawrence and Dale.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Hogansville with the Revs. Bill Deakins and Harold Willis officiating. Burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.

Gilbert R. Holliday
Gilbert R. Holliday, 83, of 335 Park Hill Drive died Friday at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Mr. Holliday, born January 27, 1917, in Randolph County, Ala., was the son of the late R.A. and Frances Lettie Henry Holliday. He lived in LaGrange most of his life and retired from Milliken and Company. He was a member of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church, an Army/Air Force veteran of World War II, and an avid basketball player and coach.
Survivors include two daughters and sons - in - law, Diana and Jim Pigg of Columbus and Janet and Bob Clark of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sons and daughters - in - law, Garry and Lois Holliday of Winter Haven, Fla. and Frank and Vickie Holliday of LaGrange; eight grandchildren; two great - grandsons; two sisters, Blanche Cook of LaGrange and Ruby Fielder of Valdosta; and two brothers, R.A. Holliday of Augusta and George Traylor of LaGrange; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Hunter - Allen - Myhand Chapel with the Rev. Sidney Shelnutt officiating. Burial will follow at Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will be at his home and will receive friends at the funeral home this evening 6 until 8.
