Mr. Charlie Lee Satterfield, age 65 of Forsyth County passed away June 17, 2003 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was employed with Westvaco, for 21 years. He was a member of Freedom Gospel Ministries. HARTWELL--Dora Bell Hubbard Cothran, age 89, of 261 Fairview W., died Thursday, Mar. 1, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens.
She was born Feb. 17, 1912 in Franklin County to the late Ed Hubbard and Minnie Myers Hubbard. She was the widow of Roy Frank Cothran. Mrs. Cothran was a homemaker and a member of Clarkes Creek Baptist Church, Martin.
Surviving are: one daughter, Jean Carson, Lavonia; one sister, Amilee Walters, Elberton.
Funeral service were held at 7 p.m. Friday night, March 2, 2001 at the Hamby Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Truitt Brawner officiated.
Milton Ferguson Jr.
EASLEY, S.C.--Milton Ponder Ferguson Jr., age 76 of 105 Nancy Drive, husband of Mrs. Sybil Ellison Ferguson, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001 at Riverside Nursing Center.
Mr. Ferguson was born in Pickens County, S.C. to the late Milton Ponder, Sr. and Marie McCoy Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson was retired from Fluor Daniel and was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Rev. Dr. Doug Ferguson, Lavonia, Gary Ferguson, Easley, S.C.; two daughters: Linda Moody, Calhoun Falls, S.C., Judy Crowe, Easley, S.C.; three sisters: Doris Mason and Patsy Pepper, both of Six Mile, S.C., Diane Powell. Easley, S.C.; two brothers: Joe Earl Ferguson, Florida, Gene Ferguson, Greenville, S.C.; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted at noon on Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Garden, Pickens, S.C. by the Rev. Dr. Doug Ferguson.
Leccie D. Lewis
CANON—Leccie Dove Lewis, 82, of 80 Lewis Street, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001 at the Athens Regional Medical Caenter in Athens.
A native of Franklin County, she was born July 13, 1918 to the late Ben and Daisy Outz Dove. She worked in the textile industry for many years and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Goldmine Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Verner Otis Lewis of Canon; a daughter, Revonda Lynn Pearson of Royston; a sister, Bennie Bell of Anderson, S.C.; and two grandchildren Jessica Pearson and Colin Pearson both of Royston.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Laverne Lewis, one sister, Jimmie Hammond and a brother, Charlie Dove.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001 at the Chapel of the Pruitt Funeral Home with the Rev. Leon Suttles and the Rev. Johnny Stowe officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Church of God cemetery in Hartwell.
Winfred (Wink) Brown
ROYSTON—Winfred Howell (Wink) Brown, 71, of 1353 Bowersville Street, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001 at Cobb Memorial Hospital.
A native of Anderson County, S.C. he was born May 3, 1929 to the late Theo and Maude Belle Brown. He was raised in his grandparent’s home, the late E.M. and Ella Craft Howell. He was co-owner of King’s Place and Charlene’s Personal Care Home. He was a very special step-father to his five step-children and was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Elizabeth Thomas Brown of Royston; stepsons, Chris Ayers of Carnesville, David Ayers of Royston and Jason and Jonathan Ayers of Lavonia; a stepdaughter, Dawn Ray of Bowman; a sister, Ella Mae Newton of Anderson, S.C.; brother, Harrison Brown of Bowersville; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Sudie Hall.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001 at the Chapel of the Pruitt Funeral Home with the Revs. Ben Lumley and Harry Brown officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Chuck Maxwell
CANON-- Charles “Chuck” Edwin Maxwell, age 64, of 1055 Unawatti Rd., Canon, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Decatur, Ga, following an extended illness.
He was born on Mar. 9, 1936, to the late J.D. and Zettie Gibson Maxwell in Franklin County. He was the widower of the late Mrs. Betty Lou Haifly Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Phillip Maxwell.
He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Lavonia. He was retired from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local # 430 after 40 years of loyal and dedicated service. He was also a Korean Conflict veteran having served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include two daughters: Mrs. Lee (Cindy) Harris, Canon, Mrs. Alan (Mona) Fetta, Snellville; one son, Mr. Wayne Maxwell, Canon; one step-son, Mr. Rick Lea, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Wollmann, Canon; and brother, Mr. Howard Maxwell, Royston; five grandchildren, Mrs. Christy Fleeman, Ms. Beth Harris, Ms. Amy Maxwell, Ms. Nicole Fetta, Mr. Jason Lea; and two great grandchildren, Mr. Cody Fleeman and Ms. Brittany Harris.
Services and entombment were Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. from the Oak Lawn Memorial Garden, Hwy 81, Anderson, S.C. with the Rev. John Forbes officiating.
Peggy Toney
GREENVILLE. S.C.--Peggy Ann James Toney, 54, of 34 Douglas Drive, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001.
Born in Royston, she was a daughter of George W. and Doris Weaver James of Royston. She received a Masters in Education with honors from the University of Georgia and was a 6th grade math and science teacher for Greenville County Schools before her retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenville and attended Augusta Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents she is survived by a daughter, Michelle Toney of Charleston; a son, Scott Toney of Darien, Ga; and a sister, Sallye Bond of Danielsville, Ga. She was predeceased by a sister, Martha Cleveland.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown .
Charlie Jordan
CANON--Charlie Lee Jordan, 74, of 1383 Jackson Bridge Road, Canon, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001.
He was born in Franklin County, Feb. 27, 1927, a son of the late Fate and Neil Dove Jordan. Mr. Jordan was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from the Franklin County Road Department as a heavy equipment operator.
Survivors include: special friend, Helen Garner, Canon; one sister, Grace Reidling, Toccoa; 13 nieces, 6 nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers: Pete Jordan, Tom Jordan, Jim Jordan and John Jordan; sisters: Reba Hill and Mary Williams.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001 at the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Hood officiating. Buriall followed at Middle River Baptist Church Cemetery.
John L. Whitworth
MARTIN-John Loyd Whitworth Sr., 80, of 1801 Baty Road, Red Hill community, died Jan. 2, 2002 at the Anderson Area Medical Center in Anderson, S.C.
A native of Stephens County, he was born June 24, 1921 to the late Charles Looney and Nellie Jane Collier Whitworth. He was twice married, first to the late Montine McGee Whitworth and then to Betty Meeks Brooks Whitworth. He retired from Coates and Clarke after 47 years and was a sergeant and B-24 bomber flight engineer in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He had been a prisoner of war in Germany for 13 months after his plane was shot down during the European Air Offensive. He was a member of the Mountaineer Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War and one of the original members of the Red Hill Fire Department. He was a member of the Broad River Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Meeks Brooks Whitworth; a son, John L. “Johnny” Whitworth Jr., Martin; one step-daughter, Becky Sanders, Anderson, S.C.; one brother, Charles L. Whitworth Jr., Bethel Island, Calif.; two sisters, Betty Ayers and Lois Whitworth, both of Toccoa; and seven grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Don Whitworth.
Funeral services were held Jan. 5, 2002 at the Broad River Baptist Church. The Revs. Shannon Hayes and Harlan Noles officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ethel A. Whittaker
HARTWELL-Ethel Alene Fain Whittaker, 93, a resident of Hartwell Healthcare Center/Heritage Inn, died Jan. 3, 2002 in Hartwell.
A native of Mercer County, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late Ballard Jackson and Nancy Jane Jones Fain. Her husband was the late Joseph Vohn Whittaker. She was a homemaker and retired seamstress and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the oldest surviving member of the Faith Presbyterian Church in Lavonia .
Survivors include three daughters, Anita Watkins and Ruth Tice, both of Lavonia and Lou Conner, Princeton, W. Va.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Whittaker; a daughter, Mary Jane Whittaker and six brothers.
Funeral services were held Jan. 5, 2002 from the Chapel of Hamby Funeral Home. Dr. Joe Renfro officiated. Interment followed in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W. Va.
