Marvin Edward Purvis
Mr. Marvin Edward Purvis, 75, of Thomson, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005.

Mr. Purvis, a native of Warren County, lived in Thomson for the past 47 years. He was the son of the late Arthur and Lodella Hobbs Purvis. He was retired from Miliken Mills after 40 years of service. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and Reedy Creek Baptist Church.

The funeral was Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. at Reedy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Henderson Purvis; brothers, Randy Purvis, Wrens, and Wallace Purvis, Dearing; sisters, Irene Emmert, Ft. Myers, Fla., Diane Reese and Polly Kent, Thomson; an uncle, Malcom Purvis, Avis, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were nephews.

Beggs Funeral Home, Thomson, was in charge of the arrangements.

Doris A. Bailey
Mrs. Doris A. Bailey, 59, of Hephzibah died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker and a member of South Augusta Pentecostal Holiness Church.

The funeral was May 16 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Garden cemetery with the Rev. Guy Campbell officiating.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia and James Haynes and Angela and Bryan Davis, Hephzibah; one brother, Donald James, Keysville; one sister, Dorothy Harpley, Wrens; four grandchildren; and longtime friend and partner, Kenneth Anderson.

Pallbearers were Andy James, Merle James, Stephen Sabo, Chris James, Gerald Gay Sr., Bryan Davis, Raymond Morris Jr. and James Haynes Sr.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Gary L. Cawley
Mr. Gary L. Cawley, 44, of Mitchell died Monday, May 10, 2005, at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

The funeral was May 12 at 2 p.m. at Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jacky Down officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda J. Cawley; two sons, David and Christal Akers, North Augusta, and Jimmy Akers, Mitchell; one daughter, Hope and James Albea, Mitchell; his mother, Mrs. Annie Ruth Cawley, Mitchell; one brother, George Edward Cawley, Mitchell; one sister, Gwen Davis, Mitchell; two grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Pallbearers were Cody Rich, Edward Parnell, Jimmy Gibson, Lofton Johnson, John Bowers and Dustin Rich.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Carrie Sheppard McGraw
Mrs. Carrie Sheppard McGraw, 87, of Wadley died Monday, May 16, 2005, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. McGraw, a native and lifelong resident of Jefferson County, was a homemaker and a member of the Moxley United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Troy McGraw, and her grandson, Eric Scott Salter.

The funeral will be May 19 at 2 p.m. at the Moxley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Lovejoy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Betty McGraw Arthur, Wadley, Frances McGraw Bussey, Evans, and Patricia McGraw (Tom) Cain, Lakewood, Ohio; one sister, Ruth Sheppard Dickens, North Augusta, S.C.; her grandchildren, Velvet Salter Mathis, Renae Bussey Grose, Kevin Bussey and Michael Cain; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Brice Deriso Jr., Gary Deriso, Johnny Deriso, Larry McGraw, Harry McGraw, Mitchell McGraw, Michael McGraw and Matthew McGraw.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Jimmy Murray
Mr. Jimmy Murray, 65, of Lyons died Friday, April 29, 2005.

Mr. Murray, a native of Tattnall County, had lived in Reidsville most of his life until moving to Lyons 15 years ago. He retired from Rogers Correctional Institute as a correctional officer. He was a member of Elza Baptist Church.

The funeral was May 2 at 2 p.m. at Elza Baptist Church. Burial was in the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Murray; one daughter, Carla Hancock, Louisville; one son, Donovan Murray, Lyons; three sisters, Johnnie Belle Rogers, Glennville, Betty Carol Smith and Linda Dooley, both of Reidsville; three brothers, Carl Murray, Lyons, Aubrey Murray and Julian Murray, Reidsville; five grandchildren and one step-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, Reidsville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Rosa Mae Grant Rhymes
Ms. Rosa Mae Grant Rhymes of Louisville died Wednesday, May 11, 2005.

Ms. Rhymes was born in Jefferson County to the late Tyles and Idella Gibbons Grant. She was a member of Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Missionary Society. She was retired from Forstman & Company and Jefferson Hospital.

The funeral was May 14 at 1 p.m. at Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church and cemetery with the Rev. Abraham Gibbons officiating.

Survivors include her children, Troy (Affie) Duggan, Robin (Bernard) Thomas and Christopher Grant, Louisville; sisters and brothers, Inez Allen, Robert (Pearl) Grant and Irene Hill all of Louisville, Mary (Vic) Culp, Winfield, Ala., Mary Frances Grant, Katie (George) Porter and Annie (Shavers) Ballard all of Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Catherine Story
Mrs. Catherine Story, 63, of Moxley died Monday, May 10, 2005.

Mrs. Story, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the Moxley United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

The funeral was May 13 at 2 p.m. at Moxley United Methodist Church with the Revs. Don Lovejoy and Eugene T. Evers officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Harrison Thomas Story; a son, Harrison Thomas Story III, Waynesboro; three daughters, Ramona K. Johnson, Twin City, Victoria Lee Owens, Washington, and Jackqueline Story Williams, Louisville; two sisters, Gloria Ellison, Waynesboro, and Martha Reese, Midville; four brothers, Lenwood E. Deriso, Wadley, Walter Brice Deriso Jr., Louisville, Gary Deriso, Louisville, and Johnny Deriso, Wadley; and 14 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ken Winburn, Tripp Winburn, Johnny Hadden, Chucky Story, Ron Kelley, Luke Stickle, Randy Davis and Jonathon Deriso.

Sallie Mae Howard Terrell
Mrs. Sallie Mae Howard Terrell, 72, of Wrens died Saturday, May 14, 2005.

Mrs. Terrell, a native of Emanuel County, was a member of Sand Valley AME Church where she served on the missionary and trustee boards.

The funeral was May 18 at 2 p.m. at Stone Springfield AME Church with the Rev. S.L. Thompkins officiating. Burial was in Sand Valley AME Church Cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Daisy and Pierce Lampkin and Ruby and Rev. Clyde Durden, Augusta, and Josephine Hannah, Fayetteville; seven sons, Freddie and Ruby Terrell Sr., Ronnie Terrell Sr., Timothy Terrell and Cedric Terrell, Wrens, Frank Terrell Jr., Sandersville, Michael Terrell, Augusta, and Danny Terrell, Folkston; a sister, Fannie Bellmon, Augusta; 32 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Destiny Leanne Cawley
Destiny Leanne Cawley of Grovetown died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at University Hospital.

Destiny was the infant daughter of Scott and Valarie Cawley.

Graveside services were Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. at Mitchell City cemetery with the Rev. Jacky Downs officiating.

Other survivors are her maternal grandparents, William and Teresa May, Mitchell; paternal grandparents, Lois Isenhour, Augusta; great-grandparents, Harold Ray and Sandra Couch, Dallas, Tx.; four uncles, one aunt and several nieces and nephews.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lucille Lockhart Cunningham
Mrs. Lucille Lockhart Cunningham, 78, of Louisville died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mrs. Cunningham was a native of Jefferson County where she attended Lockhart School and Jefferson County Training School. She lived in New York for 41 years where she was employed as a nursing assistant for over 18 years. She was a member of Eden Baptist Church.

The funeral was Feb. 12 at noon at Eden Baptist Church with the Rev. James Nelson officiating. Burial was in Spring Bethel Society Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Johnnie Cunningham; her children, Albenia Jordan and Pricilla Crier, New York City, and Eva Vargas, Louisville; her siblings, Dr. Verdree Lockhart and Ethel Jordan, Atlanta, Agnes Wiggins, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Bernice Lewis, Augusta, and Dr. Fred Lockhart Jr., Smyrna; two sons-in-law, one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, ; seven grandchildren, including March Crier Jr., Atlanta, who she reared as her own; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Belinda Evans
Belinda Evans of Bronx, N.Y., died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005.

Ms. Evans was a native of Oconee. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Issac Cooper and Alene Hunt Evans. She joined the St. Matthews AME Church of Louisville at an early age. She graduated from Jefferson County High School in 1973. She migrated to New York in 1981. She attended several churches and joined The Fellowship Covenant Church (Church on the Hill) on Castle Hill Avenue.

The funeral was Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. at Fellowship Covenant Church on the Hill. Burial was in Kenisco Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y. A memorial service was held on Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home Chapel.

Survivors include two brothers, William C. Evans, Scotch Plains, N.J., and David Evans, Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Carlene Brown, Englewood, N.J., and Sarah Evans, Greensboro; one brother-in-law, Wilbert Brown, Englewood; two sisters-in-law, Cynthia Evans, Scotch Plains, and Sara Evans, Nauet, N.Y.; two uncles, David Evans, Milledgeville, and George Walden, Louisville; two aunts, Amy Hannah, Milledgeville, and Zelma Hunt, Bronx; eight nephews, four nieces and several great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

McCall Funeral Home, Bronx, N.Y., was in charge of the arrangements. Davis Funeral home was in charge of local arrangements.

Laura Roberson Floyd
Mrs. Laura Roberson Floyd of Wadley died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Glendale Nursing Home.

Mrs. Floyd, a native of Jefferson County, was the youngest daughter of the late Lucinda Brown Roberson and Jessie Roberson. Early in life she became a member of Noah Ark Baptist Church in Burke County. She received her education at Hickory Grove Elementary and Lockhart Elementary. During her early adult years she moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., where she lived most of her life. She was married to the late Joseph Floyd. She relocated to Wadley in 2000 and resided at Glendale Nursing Home.

The funeral was Jan. 3 at John and Alavan Memorial Chapel, Garrer Funeral Home in Louisville with the Rev. John A. Lockhart officiating. Burial was in the Lockhart Cemetery.

Survivors are nieces and nephews, Dr. and Mrs. Verdree (Louise) Lockhart and Ethel Jordan, Atlanta, Lucille (Johnny) Cunningham, Louisville, Agnes L. Wiggins and Freeman Jackson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Climmie Johnson, Bronx, N.Y., and Barbara Jordan, Fall Church, Va.; and several great nieces, nephews and friends.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mabel Howell
Mrs. Mabel Howell, 92, of Evans died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Westwood Nursing Facility in Evans.

Mrs. Howell, formerly of Wadley, was born in Baxley. She was a homemaker and a member of the Moxley Baptist Church. She is predeceased by her husband, L.C. Howell.

The funeral was Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at Moxley Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Burial was in the Moxley Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, William Lee Howell, Stockbridge, and James Milton Howell, Eatonton; a daughter, Catherine Howell Norris, Augusta; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ronald B. Norris, Donald Eugene Norris, Alan Norris, Joe Norris, James Howell and Mark Howell.
