Quinton Askew
Mr. Quinton Askew, 83, of Vidette died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at the Dwight David Eisenhower Medical Center Fort Gordon.
Mr. Askew was retired from the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. He was a retired landscaper and lived in Vidette for 27 years. He attended Gough Baptist Church.
The funeral was June 22 at 2 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, Waynesboro, with the Revs. Richard Daniels and Gary Morgan officiating. Burial was in Rose Dhu Cemetery, Vidette.
Survivors include his wife, Marian Jane Askew; two daughters, Marsha Couture, Trenton, SC, and Ann McNair, Vidette; four sons Kenneth Askew, Melbourne Beach, Fla., Johnny Penrow, Grovetown, Steve Penrow and Andre Penrow, both of Waynesboro; a sister, Edna Askew, Hazlehurst; three brothers, Carl Askew, Pennsylvania, Donald Askew, Valdosta, and Alton Askew, Macon; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Robert McNair, Johnny Penrow, Steve Penrow, Andre Penrow, Bobby McNair and Michael Penrow.

Lloyd Wayne Lamb
Mr. Lloyd Wayne Lamb, 53, of Wadley died Friday, June 18, 2004.
Mr. Lamb was the son of Mrs. Betty Rodriguez and the late Lloyd Lamb. He was a native of Jenkins County and was self employed in the food industry.
Funeral services were June 20 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home with the Rev. Jamie Archer and Curtis Rentz officiating. Burial was in Eastbrook Cemetery.

Richard "Kitty" Nelson
Mr. Richard "Kitty" Nelson, 70, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., died Thursday, June 17, 2004.
Mr. Nelson, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Ways Grove Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Izell and Eva Jean White Nelson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sammie Darion Nelson.
The funeral was June 19 at 12:30 p.m. at Ways Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy McCullough officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his children, Thomas Nelson, Lynn Marie Nelson, Eugene Nelson, Henry Nelson, Ft. Lauderdale, Luella Nelson Smith and Emma Nelson, Wrens; two sisters, Mary Lee Blair, Ft. Lauderdale, and Norma Jean Nelson, Louisville; two brothers, Joe Nelson, Wrens, and Horace Nelson, Ft. Lauderdale; one sister-in-law; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 30 nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Fred Gilliard
Mr. Fred Gilliard, 69, of Tavares, Fla., died Wednesday, June 9, 2004.
Mr. Gilliars was owner of G&O; Co. in Florida for 23 years. When he retired in 1989, he and his wife moved to Louisville where they bought a farm and raised beef cattle. He was a member of Central Baptist Church of Wadley and a member of the Cattleman's Association. In 2001, they returned to Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Sarah Gilliard.
A memorial service was held June 16 in the chapel of Steverson, Hamlin and Hilbish Funeral Home in Tavares, Fla., with Bob Miller, Hospice Chaplin, officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Lorine: two daughters, Cheryl and Dean Dobbs, Astatula, Fla., and Barbara and Audie Newman, Tavares; a son, Allen and Kelly Gilliard, Louisville; two sisters, Frances and Maury Deaton, Lakeland, Fla., and Linda and Billy McMurphy, Clermont, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jesse Gilliard, Louisville, and Nikki and A.J. Newman, Tavares, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Jannie Heggs Atkinson
Mrs. Jannie Heggs Atkinson died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at the South Mountainside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Union, NJ.
Mrs. Atkinson, a native of Jefferson County, became a member of Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church at an early age. She later joined Old Bethel Baptist Church where she worked for years as a missionary, Sunday school teacher and served as the church secretary. After moving to New Jersey she attended Church at Revelations Baptist Church, now known as Community Chapel of Christ in Newark, NJ.
Funeral services were held May 21 at noon at Revival Temple Center of Deliverance, Newark, NJ, with the Rev. John W. Jackson Sr. officiating. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery in Hillside, NJ.
Survivors include her children, Mary Turner, Newark, NJ, George (Earnestine) Atkinson, Jersey City, NJ, Leola (Rufus) Schultz, Philadelphia, Pa., and Annie Atkinson, Irvington, NJ; one brother, Moses Lamar, Louisville; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Oliver Pilcher Walden Jr.
Mr. Oliver Pilcher Walden Jr., 71, of Gibson died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at University Hospital.
Mr. Walden, a lifelong resident of Glascock County, was the son of the late Oliver P. Walden Sr. and the late Mary Will Walden. He graduated with a 2-year business degree from the Spartanburg Methodist College. He served 11 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Japan, Korea and Vietnam Conflicts and received the National Defense Medal. He retired a Staff Sergeant from the Air Force and later retired from Wal-Mart. He was a Baptist by faith.
Graveside services with military honors were held June 21 at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Gardens in Louisville with the Rev. Thomas Ghann officiating.
Survivors include two step-daughters, Angela (Bill) Kemp, Gibson, and Gail (Eugene) Norris, Warrenton; a brother, Melton Walden, Augusta; two sisters, Brenda Hobbs, Cottageville, SC, and Audrey Norton, Gibson; several nieces and nephews and a special dedicated nephew, Milton and Debbie Hobbs, Thomson; two grandsons, three granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were employees of Wal-Mart.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

William Rawlings Mills Sr.
Mr. William Rawlings Mills Sr., 88, of Wadley died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Jefferson Hospital.
Graveside services were held June 20 at 5 p.m. at Wadley cemetery with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating.
Survivors include a son, William R. Mills Jr. of Wadley; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Gomillion Ford
Mrs. Evelyn Gomillion Ford, 59, of Wadley died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Glendale Nursing Home.
Mrs. Ford was a native of Richmond County and a member of House of Prayer.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Gomillion, North Augusta, Meryl (Daniel) Brown, Augusta; one son, Tommie J. Ford, Augusta; two brothers, Matthew Gomillion, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Earl Gomillion, Augusta; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Viola Thomas Gamble
Mrs. Viola Thomas Gamble of Bartow died Tuesday, June 8, 2004.
The funeral was June 12 at Tarvers Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. K.E. Phillips officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include five daughters, Leola Jackson, Lillie Mae Tarver and Daisy Green, Bartow, and Maggie Williams and Bessie Thomas, Wadley; one son, Ronnie Victor Hunley, Louisville; 23 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

Doyal Gibbons
Mr. Doyal Gibbons, 49, of Louisville died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at The Heritage of Old Capital Inn in Louisville.
Mr. Gibbons, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church. Later in life he became a faith worker at the Canaan Galilee Baptist Church where he joined the RCW Men's Choir and the Canaan Galilee Senior Choir. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Alice Brown Gibbons and one sister, Annie Lois Samuel.
The funeral was May 29 at 3 p.m. at Pine Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Peter Sparks officiating. Eulogist was the Rev. Robert Stokes of Canaan Galilee Baptist Church. Burial was in Pine Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include four sisters, Helen (Lewis) Carr, Mozell Thompson, Mary Alice (Johnny) Davis, Louisville, Azalene Beard, Timmonsville, SC; four brothers, James Gibbons, Otis Gibbons, David Walden, Augusta, and Lamar (Annie) Walden, Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Mary Mathis, Cindy Gibbons, Bonnie Gale Walden and Bertha Knight; brothers-in-law, Oscas Thompson and Odell Robert; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Claude Keys Jr.
Mr. Claude Keys Jr., 80, of Gibson died Monday, June 14, 2004.
Mr. Keys served in the Army during WWII where during his 22 year career he helped with the initial assault on Normandy and other battles and he helped liberate P.O.W. camps at the end of the war. He served in Germany, Korea and Greece. He was the European Skeet Shooting Champion while stationed in Germany. He served as security at the Pentagon and in Greece. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Molly Keys.
Graveside services with full military honors were June 16 at Gibson First Baptist Church cemetery with the Revs. Chuck Hunt and Bucky Halford officiating.
Survivors include a son, Mike Keys, Hawkinsville; two daughters, Claudia Keys Sauceda, Hephzibah, and Jenny Keys Gooding, Appling; one brother, Bob Keys, Cartersville; one sister, Louise Tidwell, Franklin, Tenn.; a special nephew, Wilson Tidwell, Franklin, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Kris Alexander, Craig Keys, Ana Sauceda and Casey Gooding; and eight great-grandchildren.

Fred Lamar Lord
Mr. Fred Lamar Lord, 66, of Bartow died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Emanuel County Hospital.
Mr. Lord, a native of Washington County, was the son of the late Herman Horace Lord. He started with Georgia Kaolin Company in 1974 as an export sales manager and retired as a manager in Savannah. He served in the National Guard for nine years. Mr. Lord was a member of the Bartow Baptist Church and the Hamilton Masonic Lodge #58 F&AM.; He had resided in Bartow for the past 17 months.
The funeral was June 9 at 11 a.m. at Sisters Baptist Church, Sandersville, with the Rev. William E. Brown and the Rev. Jerry Eiland officiating. Burial was in the Brownwood Cemetery, Sandersville.
Survivors include his wife, Joanna Aldred Lord, Bartow; a daughter, Melissa Lord Strickland, Bainbridge; his mother, Sarah Helen Brett Lord, Sandersville; two brothers, Buford Lord and Lester Lord, both of Sandersville.
Pallbearers were Randy Newsome, Henry Sheppard, Joe Garrett, Wade Brown, Doug Watkins, Adrian Ashley, Mark Jones and Billy Wright.

Margaret Jeanette (Gordy) Wood
Mrs. Margaret Jeanette (Gordy) Wood of Wadley died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta.
Mrs. Wood was born in Wadley and after many years away, moved back to Wadley in 1963. She was retired from the Wadley Shirt Factory and a member of the Wadley First United Methodist Church.
The funeral was June 10 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Dr. Larry Sauls officiating. Burial was in the Wadley Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Barry Wood and Larry Wood, both of Wadley; a sister, Doris Roberts, Seffner, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Verlyn Smith, Ollie Freeman, Kenneth Brown, Sonny Gaston, David Moore and Willie Tarver.
