Allen "Hawk" Haywood
Mr. Allen "Hawk" Haywood, 78, of Mitchell died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Haywood, a native of Glascock County, was retired from the Georgia D.O.T. after 30 years of service.
The funeral was Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. at Mitchell Baptist Church with the Revs. Al Kurtz and Gus Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Masie Whitehead Haywood; one son, Jimmy (Alicia) Haywood, Gibson; three daughters, Luann (Jimmy) Marsh, Louisville, Betty (Ricky) Sammons, Gibson, and Shirley (Tracy) Dixon, Wrens; one brother, Mr. Jack Haywood, Mitchell; three sisters, Marie Todd, Thomson, Jimmie Smith, Marietta, and Joyce Knotts, Atlanta; six grandchildren and one great-granchild.
Pallbearers were Josh Whitehead, Jacky Haywood, Larry Tucker, Wes Haywood, Joey Wheeler and Micheal Reese.

Willie Albert Kitchens Sr.
Mr. Willie Albert Kitchens Sr. of Davisboro died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Washington County Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Kitchens, a native of Washington County, was a member of Shiloh CME Church and a farm mechanic.
The funeral was Aug. 30 at 2 p.m. at Shiloh CME Church and cemetery in Davisboro.
Survivors include his wife, Tressie Lee Wicker Kitchens; children, Bessie Harper, Floyd Battle, Rose Carter, Janice Yorker, Shirley Mincey, Debbie Kitchens, Willie Albert Kitchens Jr. and Katrina Hannah, all of Davisboro, Larry Bostic and Jeanette Foster, Sandersville; his brothers, Tommy Stone and Calvin Mitchell, Davisboro; a sister, Carolyn Bostic, Sandersville; 45 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, four god-children, six sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law, two aunts and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Curtis Franklin Landrum Jr.
Mr. Curtis Franklin Landrum Jr., 60, of Wrens died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Landrum was retired from Interstate Paper Company in Midway.
The funeral was Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. at Waldens United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bill Arrington and Marvin Goodman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Curtis Landrum III, Thomson and Paul Elliott, Brunswick; a daughter, Robin Evans, Harlem; two sisters, Juliette Grimauld, Augusta; Elizabeth Williams, Dade City, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Christine Futch, Nicolas Landrum and Kayla Landrum.

Nellie Ruth Sims
Mrs. Nellie Ruth Sims, 74, of Louisville died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Heritage of Old Capital in Louisville.
Mrs. Sims, a native of Glascock County, was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Sims and three daughters.
The funeral was Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.L. Stokes officiating. Burial was in Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Nathaniel (Ruby) Upton and Charles Sims; four daughters, Mary (Maurice) Jenkins, Gladys Green, Joann (Willie) Ferguson and Brenda Sims, all of Augusta; one sister, Annie Moss, Warrenton; 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Annie Vera Thigpen
Mrs. Annie Vera Thigpen, 81, of Murrells Inlet, SC, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003.
Mrs. Thigpen, a native of Glascock County, was a former resident of Thomson. She was a member of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Thigpen Jr.
Graveside services were Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. in the LDS cemetery in Edgehill with Bishop Billy R. Black and Bishop Geore S. Nicholls officiating.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Thigpen, Gray; a daughter, Carolyn Drew, North Augusta; a sister, Mary Alice West, Gibson; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Billy Huggins, Craig Black, Jimmy Black and Jimmy Thigpen.

Edward Woods
Mr. Edward Woods, 85, of Wadley died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Veterans Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Woods, a native of Emanuel County, had lived in Wadley for the past 50 years. He was a member of the Wadley First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Builders Sunday School Class. He was a World War II veteran with the 102nd Inf. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Frances Woods.
The funeral was Aug. 31 at 3 p.m. at Wadley First United Methodist Church with Dr. Larry Sauls officiating. Burial was in the Wadley City Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Pam Crego, Waldey; a son, Ronald Woods, Augusta; a sister, Estel Flanders, Adrian; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Sonny Gaston, Kenneth Brown, Mickey Flanders, Thomas Woods, Randall Woods and Clark Woods.

Mary Francis Josey Evans
Mrs. Mary Francis Josey Evans, 86, of Bartow died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Dublinair Nursing Home in Dublin.
Mrs. Evans, born in Washington County, was a lifelong resident of Bartow. She was a graduate of Bartow High School and attended the State College for Women in Milledgeville. She was a member of Bartow United Methodist Church, a homemaker and an artist.
The funeral was Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at Bartow United Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy Howell officiating. Burial was in the Bartow City Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Dupree, Swainsboro; a son, Wiley Clark Evans III, Bartow; a sister, Mrs. A.H. Hembree Jr., Anniston, Ala.; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Georgia Mae Lane
Ms. Georgia Mae Lane, 55, of Wrens died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003.
The funeral was Sept. 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Aldred CME Church with the Rev. George Glenn officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a son, David Lane; three sisters, Alberta Ruff, Eva Jean Smith and Jerlene Turner; two brothers, Raymond McNair and Sedrick McNair; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Beverly Gay Giseburt Moss
Ms. Beverly Gay Giseburt Moss, 54, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at Freeman Medical Center in Joplin, Mo.
Ms. Moss, a native of Pattonsburg, Mo., resided in Louisville for most of her life. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a retired legal secretary. She was a church organist, a former Cub Scout leader and taught crocheting and knitting classes. She was preceded in death by her father, Billy Gene Giseburt and her sister, Cheryl Jean Giseburt Seippel.
A memorial service was held Sept. 2 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Carthage, Mo. Her ashes were scattered into the ocean at Myrtle Beach, SC, on Sept. 6.
Survivors include three children, Brian Jeffrey Moss, Springfield, Mo., Amanda Sue Moss (Robert Joseph) Bisig, Peru, NY, and John Richard Moss, Denver, Colo.; her mother, Gloria Bradford Giseburt, Carthage; a sister, Sandra Sue Giseburt, Carthage; and a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Marie Bisig.

Johnnye V. Cox
Dr. Johnnye V. Cox of Athens died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003.
Dr. Cox, a native of Wadley, was born in 1907. She attended Union Hill Elementary School and the Third District High School, both in Wadley. After completion of a two-year program at the State Normal School in Athens, she received a B.S. degree from South Georgia Teachers College, a M.S. degree from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. from New York University.
In 1946 Dr. Cox joined the faculty of the University of Georgia where she developed the Program of Supervision in the College of Education. She was one of the committee who made the influential study leading to the development of the Minimum Foundation Program of Education for Georgia. Her educational leadership and contributions led to many recognitions and awards. Among those are: Certificate of Leadership as President of GA A.S.C.D., an award by GACIS for dynamic leadership, two State Awards named in her honor: one by GACIS and one by the College's Department of Educational Leadership. There is also a special program at the annual GACIS meeting known as "The Johnnye V. Cox Lecture."
The funeral was Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Edward Bolen and Dr. Claude McBride officiating. Burial was at 3 p.m. at Coleman Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Wadley.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews and two very special friends that she called her "Athens Family, " Dr. Bernice Cooper and Dr. Ira Aaron.

Pauline Byrd
Mrs. Pauline Byrd, 65, of Gibson died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mrs. Byrd, a native of Jefferson County, was of the Methodist faith.
Graveside services were held Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at Bethel UMC cemetery with the Rev. Jacky Downs officiating. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Caines.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Bailey, Gibson; her son, Jacky Coxwell, Gibson; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Carl Ashley Hall
Mr. Carl Ashley Hall, 40, of Louisville died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003.
Mr. Hall, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of Charles A. Hall and the late Sybil Wilson Hall. He worked in construction and attended Louisville United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens cemetery with the Revs. Donnie Screws and Charles Price officiating.
Survivors include two sons, Christopher Hall, Louisville; Craig Hall, Augusta; his father, Charles A. Hall, Hephzibah; a brother, Charlie Hall, Hahira; and a sister, Cindy Cobb, Bartow.
Pallbearers were Van Hall, Douglas Overstreet, Jeff Overstreet, Richard Stavely, Joe Cheeks and Steve Donaldson.
