D.S. "Doc" Hillman
Mr. D.S. "Doc" Hillman, 90, of Stapleton died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in Thomson Manor Nursing Facility.

Mr. Hillman, a lifelong resident of Warren County, was the retired owner/operator of the D.S. Hillman Store. He was also a farmer. He was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his son, Eugene Hillman.

The funeral was June 20 at 11 a.m. at Reedy Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Sutphin and Kenneth Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Doris Hillman Huff, Stapleton; his sister, Mrs. Jessie Phillips, Thomson; his daughter-in-law, Frances Hillman; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Morris McTier, Emory Wilson, Dennis Robinson, Bill Howard, Jim Leach and B.I. Hillman.

Memorials may be made to the Reedy Creek Baptist Church cemetery Fund.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Joe Black
Mr. Joe Black, 90, of Wadley died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Glendale Nursing Home.

Mr. Black, a native of Jefferson County, was a construction worker and a member of the St. John's United Methodist Church.

The funeral was June 21 at 11 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Garren officiating. Burial was in the Wadley City Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Rigdon, Midville, and Josephine Cowart, Wadley; six grandchildren, Tony Greenway, Vidalia, Michelle Turner, Swainsboro, Gary Cowart, Joel Cowart, Larry Cowart and Mike Cowart, Wadley; 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mathew C. Caines
Mr. Mathew C. Caines, 17, of Gibson died Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Putnam County.

Graveside services were held June 24 at 3 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Charlene Griswold officiating.

Survivors include his parents, Jacky and Sheila Coxwell, Gibson; one brother, Jacky Coxwell Jr., Gibson; three sisters, Angela Coxwell and Amanda Hope, both of Gibson, and Jacqueline Lewis, Augusta.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Margaret Ann Stephens Bates
Mrs. Margaret Ann Stephens Bates, 61, of Toccoa died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Athens Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Bates lived in Wrens as a child with her parents, the late John Barton Stephens and Ione Clark Stephens and had retired as a counselor at Stephens County High School in Toccoa.

A memorial service will be held in Toccoa on Jan. 11.

Survivors include two sons, Phillip Bates Jr., Warner Robins, and Stephens Bates, Athens; two brothers, Robert Barton Stephens, Niceville, Fla., and John Clark Stephens, Carrolton; two aunts, Mrs. Elizabeth Stephens Richardson and Mrs. Norma Stephens Godowns, both of Orangeburg, SC; and one uncle, Charles W. (Speakie) Stephens Jr., Wrens; two nephews, Rob Stephens, Fla., and James Stephens, Carrolton; and two nieces, Mary Ella (Meme) Locklear and Rebecca Stephens, Carrolton; and several cousins.

Mae Davis
Mrs. Mae Davis, 85, of Louisville died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Davis, a native of Glascock County, was the daughter of the late John and Mollie Johnson Wilkins. She was the wife of the late Wiley Davis Jr. and was preceded in death by a son, David Davis. She was also a member of the Parker's United Methodist Church and she retired from the Louisville Shirt Company.

The funeral was Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. at Louisville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Billy Howell and H.E. Davidson officiating. Burial was in the Louisville City Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, William H. "Rusty" Davis, Louisville; a daughter Sarah (Jim) Davis, Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her great-nephews.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Louisville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Julia B. Farmer
Mrs. Julia B. Farmer, 93, of Wrens died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002.

The funeral was Dec. 27 at 3 p.m. at Ways Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy McCullough III officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Lillie Mae Blake, Wrens, and Rosa Lee (Peter) Williams, Augusta; a stepdaughter, Jessie Bell Farmer, Wrens; one sister, Lula Mazone, Augusta; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Welcome Harris Sr.
Mr. Welcome Harris Sr. died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002.

Mr. Harris, a native of Taliferro County, spent his life as proprietor of several businesses in Atlanta, including Sweet Auburn Spirit Shop, Ace Barbeque Barn, Ace Cab Company, Ace Grill and Harris Package Store. He was a charter member of the Atlanta Car For Hire Association and a dedicated member of First Lizzie Chapel Missionary Baptist Church which was later renamed Visions of Life Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie L. Thomas; sons, Brantley, Zachery and Clyde Roby Jr.; brothers, John Jr., Rev. Hugh Jackson, Willie Carr and William; sisters, Rosa Bell Odom, Munice L. Tillery, Janie W. Biggs; granddaughter, Rochelle J. Roby and great granddaughter, Brea Nicole Harris-Smoot.

A memorial service was held Dec. 27 at 11 a.m. at New Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. James Martin, David J. Laster III and Terri R. Benn officiating. Burial was in Lincoln Cemetery.

Survivors include a brother Jimmy M. (Doris) Harris; son, Welcome (Janice) Harris Jr.; daughter, Pamela E. Harris; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Herschel Thornton Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Isaiah "Zak" Johnson Sr.
Mr. Isaiah "Zak" Johnson Sr., 41, of Louisville died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at an Augusta hospital.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Jefferson County and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He worked as a mechanic.

The funeral was Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Wallace Mason officiating. Burial was in the Jordan Place Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Cambell Johnson; his children, Estella Johnson, Sharaine Olivia Johnson, Isaiah Johnson Jr., of Louisville, Jamal Johnson, Margiuta Johnson and Kareen M. Johnson, of Walterboro, SC; step children, Shirley Beaty and Marion Campbell, Walterboro, SC, David Campbell, Essie Campbell, Lucille Campbell and Henry Campbell, of Louisville; sisters, Ada Bell Wilson and Susie Strowbridge, Louisville; Eva Mae Greasham and Mattie Young, Ft. Lauderdale, Sara Kelly and Sebrina Lumpkin, Atlanta, Gloria Atkins, Wadley; brothers, Jack Johnson Jr. and Cleveland Johnson, Wadley, Chester Lee Johnson, Atlanta; four grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dennie C. Walden
Mrs. Dennie C. Walden, 80, of Louisville died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at a local hospital.

Mrs. Walden was a native of Jefferson County and a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church.

The funeral was Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in the Louisville Society Cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Charlie "Beam" Bracetly, Dennie "Knight" Jordan, Nola Mae Cunningham, Barbara Ann Jenkins, Lee Edward "Snake" Walden and Robert "Hawk" Walden, all of Louisville; one sister, Geneva Brown, Louisville; one sister-in-law; 63 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

Ada Bell King Hill
Mrs. Ada Bell King Hill of Louisville died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002.

Mrs. Hill was a native of Jefferson County and a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church.

The funeral was Dec. 28 at Jones Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Peter Sparks officiating. Burial was in the Pine Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Tom Hill Jr., Louisville; three daughters, Mattie Washington, Louisville, Mary Ponder and Shirley Lester of Atlanta; daughters-in-law, Cressie Hill, Louisville, and Mamie Hill, West Palm Beach, Fla.; sons-in-law, Robert Ponder and Joe Lester, Atlanta; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Gainer Price Jr.
Mr. Gainer Price Jr., 68, of Snover, Mich., died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich.

Mr. Price, a native of Wrightsville, was the son of the late Gainer and Thelma (Frost) Price. He worked in construction and served his country in the U.S. Army and the National Guard. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Price.

The funeral was Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. at Hacker Funeral Parlors in Sandusky, Mich. Burial was in the Moore Township cemetery in Snover, Mich.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Price; eight children, David (Sue) Price, Wilmot, Brenda (Larry) Traylor, Snover, Diane Price, Bad Axe, Mich., Mark (Carolyn) Pirce, Canton, Darlene (Brad) Dorsch, Pigeon, Lori (Jim) Ahern, Kinde, Matthew (Lori) Price, Caro and Angel Romain, Sandusky, Mich.; six stepchildren, Edward (April) Newsome, Fairgrove, Mich., Randy (Bobbi-Jean) Newsome, Georgia, Vicky (Tom) Taylor, Caro, Angela Brady, Bad Axe, Rose Sholes, Kingston, Mich., and Sharon (Larry) Smith, Bad Axe; 35 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother Billy (Madeline) McKenzie, Georgia; two sisters, Joann (Jr.) Aldred and Betty Sue (Emmett) Stavely, all of Georgia; an aunt, Fanny Belle Stockard, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lizzie Terrell Roberts
Mrs. Lizzie Terrell Roberts died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002.

Mrs. Roberts, a native of Washington County, was the daughter of the late Henry and Lovie Hilson Braswell. She was a member of Jordan Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral was Dec. 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Bethlehem AME Church with the Revs. Louise Spears and Leroy Britt officiating.

Survivors include three daughters, Classie (Jimmy) Roberts and Joan Hines, Stapleton, and Elease Williamson, Amarillo, Texas; step-daughter, Vivian Grant, Augusta; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Terrell, Stapleton; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Hiram "Vess" Swint
Mr. Hiram "Vess" Swint, 81, of Gibson died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at University Hospital.

Mr. Swint was a life member of American Legion Post 229 at Wrens and took an active interest in the various activities prior to moving to Gibson.

The funeral was Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. in the James Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. M.C. Radford and Steve Lamb officiating. Burial was in the Gibson City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1725, Augusta.

Velma Andrews Thigpen
Mrs. Velma Andrews Thigpen, 87, of Davisboro died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at the Heritage Inn Nursing Home.

Mrs. Thigpen was a native and life long resident of Washington County. She was the daughter of the late Cleon R. Andrews and the late Mary Roberson Andrews. She was a homemaker and an active member of the New Hope United Methodist Church where she was a longtime former Sunday school teacher, Sunday school treasurer and member of the UMW. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Lewis Thigpen and her son, Thomas David Thigpen.

The funeral was Dec. 27 at 11 a.m. at the New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy Howell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Frances T. Stone, Davisboro; daughter-in-law, Shirley M. Thigpen, Bartow; grandchildren, Karen and Jerry Duncan, Davisboro, Mike and Sheila Thigpen, Harrison, Debra and Mike Martin, Bartow, and Steven Thigpen, Bartow; great-grandchildren, Jared Duncan, Kelli Duncan, Michael Thigpen, Michelle Thigpen, Jonathan Upton, Lindsay Upton, Kodi Thigpen and Kaylee Thigpen; and a brother, Jimmie P. Andrews, Tennille.

Pallbearers were Otis Andrews, Sidney Ross, Jerry Andrews, Windell Andrews, Wayne Andrews and Gary Couch.
