Lizzie Bell Kitchens
Mrs. Lizzie Bell Kitchens, 92, of Stapleton died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003.
Mrs. Kitchens was a lifelong resident of Glascock County. She was a homemaker and a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Kitchens Sr.
The funeral was Jan. 5 at 3 p.m. at Reedy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Jones and Dr. Randy Dunaway officiating. Burial was in Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include five daughters, Annette Key and Sadie Kitchens, both of Stapleton, Lollie Dell Todd, Gibson, Julia Massey, Thomson, and Lynn Mayo, Norwood; six sons, John Weldon Kitchens Sr., Hephzibah, Milo Kitchens Sr., Hull, Harry Kitchens Sr., George R. Kitchens Jr. and James Kitchens, all of Stapleton, and Julian Kitchens, Wrens; 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandchildren and honorary pallbearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ernest Ray Holley
Mr. Ernest Ray Holley of Gibson died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home.
Mr. Holley was a lifelong resident of Augusta and Wrens. He was the son of the late William Macon Holley and Rosa Mae Wheeler Holley. He was the brother of the late Billie Jr. Holley, Roy Eugene Holley and George W. Holley. He was a charter member of Martinez Baptist Church. Upon moving he became a member of Mount Horeb Baptist Church in Wrens. He was retired from the VA Hospital, Lenwood Divison as a physical therapy assistant. He served his country in World War II also serving 28 years in the Georgia National Guard Medical Division. He received The Georgia Commendation Medal in 1976 for meritorious and dedicated service. He received several other awards including the Distinguished Service Medal presented to him by Governor Lester Maddox.
The funeral was Jan. 2 at 11 a.m. at the James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Moore officiating.
Surviors include his wife, Louise D. Holley; one daughter, Peggy Holley Salter, Augusta; three sons, Douglas R. Holley, Fayetteville; Jerry C. Holley, Leah, and Tom E. Holley, Thomson; one sister, Bobbie Wimpy, Wrens; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Mike Adams, Keith Holley, Clarence Holley, Kenneth Holley, Don Holley and W.C. Holley.

Jeanette Tarver Williams
Mrs. Jeanette Tarver Williams died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mrs. Williams, a native of Jefferson County, was a graduate of Carver High School in Wadley. Upon moving to the Florida area, she was affiliated with the Church of God in Jacksonville.
The funeral was Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. at Pineola Church of God in Wadley with Elder Ronnie Harden officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Mr. Eddie Williams; five sisters, Essie Mae (Eddie) Thomas, Swainsboro, Katie Lue Tarver McGhee, New York, NY, Betty (Earl) Seabrooks, Connecticut, Elizabeth (Robert) Heggs, Albany, NY, and Barbara Jean Tarver Bowers, Wadley; four brothers Willie Lee (Mae Florence) Tarver Sr., Ben (Lula) Tarver, Freddie (Juanita) Tarver and Curtis (Diane) Tarver, Wadley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Halbert D. Elferdink
Mr. Halbert D. Elferdink, 77, of Stapleton died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at the V.A. Medical Center in Augusta.
Mr. Elferdink was born in Holland, Mich., and moved to Orlando, Fla. in 1951 where he was a self employed general contractor. He also had a farm in Stapleton since 1987. He was a member of Christ Church Unity. He also served in the U.S. Army in WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mary Lou Hotalling.
A memorial service was held Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. at his farm with the Rev. Paul Moore officiating. Burial was private.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Jo Elferdink, Orlando, Fla.; two sons, William A. Elferdink, Orlando, and Paul Elferdink, Tallahassee, Fla.; and his companion, Deloris Skinner, Stapleton; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mary Elizabeth Montgomery Anderson
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Montgomery Anderson, 89, of Augusta died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital.
Mrs. Anderson was born in Augusta and educated in Richmond County schools. She lived in Blythe for 22 years before returning to Augusta. She was retired from the Richmond County Sheriff's Department and later worked as a medical assistant and secretary. She was a past president of the Richmond County Medical Assistants and served as president of the Georgia State Medical Association. She was a member of the American Business Women's Association and a charter member of the Hill Baptist Church and was a current member at National Hills Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Anderson Jr.
The funeral was Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. at National Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Bartlett officiating. Burial was in Westover Memorial Park.
Survivors include four nephews, Whatley (Betty Ann) Scott, Marietta, Frank (Jean) Howard, Augusta, Leck III and Carol Montgomery, Hephzibah, Ted (Teresa) Montgomery, Waynesboro; one niece, Jane (William) Partridge, Heph-zibah; her care givers, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clarence W. and Nell A. Holley, Wrens, and special friends, Billy and Catherine Baston, Harlem.

Agnes Bridges
Miss Agnes Bridges, 92, of Louisville died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003.
Miss Bridges was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. She was a Baptist, retired from the Jefferson Shirt Corporation and during World War II served in Savannah as a welder for the Liberty Ships. Miss Bridges was the daughter of the late Matthew O. "Mack" and Beulah Brown Bridges Sr.
The funeral was Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. in the Louisville City cemetery with the Rev. Larry L. Montgomery officiating.
Survivors include a sister, Ruby Fair, Louisville; a brother, Otis Bridges, High Springs, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Dick Bridges, Mack Bridges, Sam Fair, Cleve Lamb, David Bailey and Jimmy Wren.

Wilbur "Bunk" Russell
Mr. Wilbur "Bunk" Russell, 80, of Augusta died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the V.A. Hospital.
Mr. Russell was a veteran in the Coast Guard and served in WWII. He was a retired mechanic from Seaboard Coastline, a member of the American Legion Post 229 and a member of Wrens Baptist Church.
The funeral was Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy White officiating. Burial was in the Wrens City Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Andrew W. (Shirley) Russell, Matthews, and John Barry Russell, Avera; one daughter, Lee Caroline (Wayne) Arrington, Mansfield; one sister, Agnes Siminivcz; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Eugene Shelton, 73, of Wrens died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Doctors Hospital.
Mr. Shelton was retired from Air Balance.

Chanel Odette Hannah
Miss Chanel Odette Hannah, 26, of Wrens died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003.
Miss Hannah was a 1996 graduate of Jefferson County High School.
The funeral was Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at the House of Faith Church with minister Dorothy Nelson officiating. Burial was in Flat Rock Cemetery, Matthews.
Survivors include a daughter, Chaniya Gibbons; parents, James and Leola Hannah; a brother, Kelvin Hannah; and her grandfather, Andrew Hannah, all of Wrens.

Mary Fulghum Mills
Mrs. Mary Fulghum Mills of Augusta died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Kentwood Nursing Home.
Mrs. Mills was a graduate of Georgia State University and College, Milledgeville, Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. and Georgia Southern College, Statesboro. She was a retired teacher with the Richmond County School system where she taught at T. Garrett School. She was a member of The Hill Baptist Church and the Gleaners Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Mills.
The funeral was Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. at Platt's Crawford Avenue Chapel with the Revs. Fred Gunter and Chandler Lanier officiating. Burial was at Bethany cemetery in Wadley.
Survivors include one son, James F. Mills, Augusta; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane (Charles H.) Nicholls III, Cumming; three grandchildren, Jason B. Nicholls, Ryan C. Nicholls and Andrew J. Nicholls; one great-granddaughter, Zoee Nicholls; one niece, Mrs. Earl Edenfield, Dublin; one nephew, Mr. L. Owen Fulghum, Summerville, SC; two sisters-in-law, Marian M. Fulghum, Dublin and Mosie W. James Clinton Godowns
Mr. James Clinton Godowns, 80, of Orangeburg, SC, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003.
Mr. Godowns, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of the late Clinton Jackson Godowns and Corine Dixon Godowns. He attended Stellaville Elementary School and graduated from Wrens High School in 1941. He was a member of the Matthews and Wrens baseball team prior to moving to Orangeburg. He was retired from SC Department of Health and Environmental Control as an environmentalist with 30 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post #4 SC Environmental Health Association. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. He was a US Army veteran serving in World War II.
The funeral was Jan. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer with the Rev. Georg Retzlaff officiating. Burial was at 3:30 p.m. in Ways Baptist Church Cemetery, Stellaville.
Survivors include his wife, Norma S. Godowns; a son James Stephens (Denise C.) Godowns, Houston, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Hubert (Mary Frances) Thomas, Macon, and Mrs. Ed (Betty Jean) Perdue, Wrens; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Franklin (Betty ) Godowns, Stellaville and Mrs. Tommy (Aubrey) Godowns, Cope, SC; and one grandson, Franklin Dennis Godowns, Houston, Texas.

Sara Pressly Gilbert
Mrs. Sara Pressly Gilbert, a resident of The Pines in Davidson, N. C., died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.
Mrs. Gilbert, a native of Lancaster, SC, was the daughter of the late Paul Adam Pressly, DD, and the late Lois Moffatt Pressly. Her father was a minister at Associate Reformed Presbyterian Churches in Lancaster, as well as in Louisville and Chester, SC. She attended Louisville Academy and High School. She was the wife of the late John Neely Gilbert Sr.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Statesville where she was past president and Lifetime Member of the Women of the Church. She was a member of the Au Fait Book Club and the Eggheads study group. She was a past president of the Statesville Arts and Science Museum, a member of Friends of the Library and the Grace Anderson Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Frances Gilbert Browne, her sisters, Lois Pressly Brice, Effie Pressly Stewler and Mary Letitia Pressly Gettys and her brother, William Laurens Pressly.
The memorial service was held Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Steven Scott and Grant Sharp officiating. A private committal service was held in Oakwood Cemetery.
Survivors include her sons, John Neely (Harriet) Gilbert Jr., Statesville, and Paul Pressly (Jane) Gilbert, Charlotte; son-in-law, Herbert Howard Browne, Charlotte; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
