Barbara Ann Hughes
Mrs. Barbara Ann Hughes of Gibson died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at the Medical College of Georgia.
Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker and a member of Magnolia Baptist Church.
A memorial service was held May 14 at 11 a.m. from the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Lloyd Whitten and Don Widener officiating.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis Allen Hughes; mother, Margaret Langford Chalker; a son, Jut M. Hughes; a daughter, Lisa Marie Hughes, all of Gibson; and a brother, James Chalker, Warrenton.
Amos Arnold
Mr. Amos Arnold, 71, of Gibson died Monday, May 13, 2002, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Arnold, a native of Fulton, NY, had lived in Gibson for the past six years coming from Middletown, NJ. He was a retired staff sergeant from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service where he served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam and received a Purple Heart. He was also retired from Lily Tulip. He attended Magnolia Baptist Church and was a member of the VFW in New Jersey. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen J. Matthews.
The funeral was May 17 at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church with the Rev. Loy Whitten officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Valerie M. Arnold; a daughter, Pamela S. Hart, Gibson; two sons, Edward D. Arnold, Thomson and Michael W. Arnold Sr., Gibson; sisters, Lefa Poole, Jackie Landcaster, Geraldine Abbott, Barbara Pritcher, Burnice Brown, Joan Donis, Judy Pyrode and Joan Spohm; brothers, Clifford D. Arnold, Earl P. Arnold, Gary Arnold and Gene Arnold; and eight grandchildren. Pallbearers were Edward D. Arnold, Wayne Henderson, Jeremy Duncan, Michael W. Arnold Sr., Jessie Matthews, Dustin Matthews, Michael W. Arnold Jr. and Daniel Arnold.

Billie Oliphant Avera
Mrs. Billie Oliphant Avera, 76, of Augusta died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Salem Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Avera, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Wrens Chapel AME Church.
The funeral was May 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Wrens Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Lugenia Johnson officiating.
Survivors include a son, James K. Avera, Augusta; an adopted daughter, LaVeUnder Ryans, Beech Island, SC; foster daughter, Brenda McCladdie; two sisters, Lucille Graham and Ada Dorcelus, Augusta; four brothers, Lee Oliphant Jr., Maywood, Ill., Willie James Oliphant Sr., Sherman, Texas, Alex Oliphant and George Oliphant of Augusta; and seven grandchildren, two foster grandchildren.

Mrs. Sarah Gibbons Brown died Monday, May 13, 2002, in Trenton, SC.
Mrs. Brown, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church.

Mr. Henry Byrd Sr., 72, of Armstrong, Fla., died Thursday, May 9, 2002.
Mr. Byrd, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the Solomon Temple Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Deacon.
The funeral was May 18 at 1 p.m. at Solomon Temple Baptist Church, Moxley, with the Rev. Peter Sparks officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Sanders of Stapleton died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Medical College of Georgia.
Mrs. Sanders was a Baptist and a homemaker.
The funeral was May 20 at 2 p.m. at Waldens United Methodist Church with the Revs. Doug May and Marvin Goodman officiating. Burial was in Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her husband, James Sanders; two sons, Russell Sanders, Grovetown and Jim Sanders, Stapleton; one daughter, Kathy Lambert, Stapleton; three brothers, Albert Aden, Johnny Aden and Terry Aden, all of Texas; one sister, Debbie Florer, Balch Spring, Texas; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Rheba Green Leaptrott
Mrs. Rheba Green Leaptrott of Wadley died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at University Hospital.
Mrs. Leaptrott, formerly of Milledgeville, had lived most of her life in Wadley. She was retired from Central State Hospital with 20 years of service. She was a member of Wadley Baptist Church.
The funeral was May 22 at 2 p.m. at Wadley Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest Purcell and the Rev. Lenard Richards officiating.
Survivors include a son, Benjie Leaptrott, Wadley; two daughters, Peggy Johnson and Wanda London, both of Swainsboro; six sisters, Imogene Head, Doris Sylvester and Bernice Cloy of Hawkinsville, Nita Brantley and Merlin Jones of Louisville and Wilda Gordy of North Carolina; six grandchildren, T. Marion Faglier
Mrs. Marion Faglier, 78, of Stapleton died Monday, May 13, 2002, at University Hospital.
Mrs. Faglier was a retired bus driver with the McDuffie County Board of Education. She was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
The funeral was May 16 at 2 p.m. at Reedy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Billy C. Faglier, Avera; three daughters, Carolyn Yokom, Ill., Connie Gaddis, Buford, and Carmen Wheeler, Wrightsville; one sister, Edith Aldred, Augusta; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

James L. Hadden
Mr. James L. Hadden, 77, of Gibson died Monday, May 13, 2002.
Mr. Hadden, a native of Glascock County, was an army veteran of WW II and a cattleman. He was a member, deacon and clerk of Mill Creek Baptist Church. He was a member of the Georgia Cattlemans Association and the American Polled Herford Association. He was one of the founding members and president of the Georgia Polled Herford Association, he was twice named the Georgia Cattlemans Association Purebread Cattleman of the year, 1980 and 1982. He was Man of the Year of the Brian Creek Soil and Water Conservation District. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Hadden and two sons, James Lynell Hadden Jr. and Glynn Clay Hadden.
The funeral was May 14 at 4 p.m. at Mill Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Hadden officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Hadden; two sons, Larry W. Hadden and Ronnie H. Hadden, both of Gibson; two brothers, Ralph Hadden, Gibson, and Murray E. Hadden, Boaz, Ala.; and four grandchildren.

Harold Hawkins
Mr. Harold Hawkins, 67, of Athens died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Hawkins, a native of Glascock County, was an Army Veteran and a mechanic. He was a member of the Athens Rifle Club, the N.R.A., and the King Bee Hunting Club. He was preceded in death by three children, Rodney Harold, Marsha Lynn and Jeffery Butler.
The funeral was May 19 at 3 p.m. at Gibson Church of God with the Bishop Steve Lamb officiating. Burial was in Mineral Springs Baptist Church, Mitchell.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Hawkins; a daughter, Robin Hawkins Wasden, Gibson; a stepdaughter, Terry Weathersbee, Hull; three brothers, O.C. Hawkins, Mitchell, Jamie Hawkins Sr., Gibson, and Ronnie Hawkins, St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Jessie Sue Sammons, Gibson; three grandchildren, Eryn Todd, Kristy Croya and Mitchell Weathersbee; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Croya, Breana Croya and Katlyn Weathersbee.

Mr. Henry J. Caines Sr., 67, of Belvedere, SC, died Thursday, May 16, 2002.
Mr. Caines, a native of Jefferson County, had lived in Belvedere for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Cornerstone Community Church and a retired driver with Claussen Concrete Company.
The funeral was May 18 at 11 a.m. at the Cornerstone Community Church with Pastor John Los officiating. Burial was in Pineview Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Perdue Caines; a son, Hank Caines, North Augusta; a daughter, Kerri Caines, Belvedere; a brother, Sammy Caines, Augusta; a sister, Mary McCorquodale, Belvedere; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Lorene Smith McIntosh of Langley, SC, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Lamar McIntosh Jr.
The funeral was May 18 at 4 p.m. at Langley First Baptist Church with the Revs. L.H. Fowler and Chris Masters officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.
Survivors include her children H.L. "Mac" McIntosh III, Atlanta, and Shirley McIntosh, Stapleton; a sister, Lois Garvin, Burnettown; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
