Mrs. Mary English Gay, 91, of Gibson died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
The funeral was March 16 at 4 p.m. at Wrens United Methodist Church with the Revs. Roy White and Terry Addis officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Brannon, Dearing; and three grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Lennie B. Gay.
Pallbearers were her nephews.

Kate New White
Mrs. Kate New White, 75, of North Augusta, SC, died Wednesday, March 14, 2002, at University Hospital.
Mrs. White, a native of Bartow, was a member of North Augusta Southern Methodist Church and the Crusaders Sunday School Class.
The funeral was March 16 at 11 a.m. at North Augusta Southern Methodist Church with the Rev. H.B. Johnston officiating. Burial was in Pineview Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence E. White; one son, Steve Whigham, North Augusta; two daughters, Debra Grear, Augusta, and Lynn Sanders, North Augusta; three stepdaughters, Cheryl Wilson, Augusta, Charlene Dryden and Rickey Christian, both of Anderson; a brother, Wesley New, Bartow; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Mrs. Vera Gibson McNair, 78, of Louisville died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Jefferson Hospital.
Mrs. McNair, a native of Atlanta, was a homemaker. She was of the Methodist faith.
The funeral was March 16 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Johnson-Grier Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Treadway officiating. Burial was in the Wrens City Cemetery.

Survivors include her brother, Billy Gibson, Wadley; and two sisters, Betty Collins, Louisville, and Alice Clark, Morrow.
Ruth Mae Oliphant
Mrs. Ruth Mae Oliphant of Augusta died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Augusta Hills.
Mrs. Oliphant, a native of Detroit, Mich., was a retired LPN from University Hospital after 20 years of service. She was a member of Lofton AME Church, an affiliated member of Ward Chapel AME Church.
The funeral was March 14 at 2 p.m. at Lofton AME Church with the Rev. Leroy Britt officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Addie Bush, Augusta; four sons, Robert Bernard Oliphant, Sandy Mitchell Oliphant, James Anthony Oliphant, Augusta, Walter Allen Oliphant, Anderson, Ind.; three sisters, Shirley Racket, St. Petersburg, Fla., Mary Frances Ramsey, Ft. Margaret Eugenia Williams Thompson
Mrs. Margaret Eugenia Williams Thompson, 84, of Camilla, formerly of Wrens, died Sunday, March 10, 2002.
Mrs. Thompson was a longtime member of Wrens Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Palmer R. Thompson.
The funeral was March 16 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home with the Rev. Race Lariscy officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Eugenia Gibson, Camilla, and Judy Jones, Leesburg; a son, Palmer R. Thompson Jr., Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Jewel W. Wylds, Augusta and a sister-in-law, Nina T. McCorquodale, Wrens; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Charles Huffman, Charles Jones Jr., Timothy Jones, Reeves Huffman, Ray Jones and Eric Braswell.

Billy D. James
Mr. Billy D. James, 62, of Wrens died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Doctor's Hospital.
Mr. James was a carpenter employed with Johnson Controls for 22 years. He was best know as "Funnel Cake Man." He was a member of Wrens Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Raley James; his mother, Marie James; and a sister, Margaret J. McNair.
The funeral was Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. at Wrens Baptist Church with the Revs. Roy White and Race Lariscy officiating.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon J. McVay, Evans; two brothers, Calvin James, Matthews, and Ray James, Wrens; and three grandchildren, Katie, Jamie and David McVay.
Pallbearers were John Lilly, Mark Hainage, Hyland Moore, Ray C. Hunnicutt, Randy Gay, Bill Timms and Ricky James.

Robert "Honk" C. Stephens
Mr. Robert "Honk" C. Stephens, 79, of Wrens died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Stephens, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of the late Annie Barton and Charles Wynn Stephens Sr., pioneer families of Jefferson County.
He graduated from Wrens High School, later he received a degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia and was married
to the late Alice "Peggy" Steed Stephens. He retired as a Post Information Officer at Fort Gordon, a position he held for over 30 years. While at Fort Gordon he also directed the publication of the Post's newspaper, "The Rambler."
After retiring Mr. Stephens served as editor of "The Jefferson Reporter" for three years becoming the fourth son to serve in this capacity as editor. He was a charter member of American Legion Post 229, serving in various offices during his fifty eight years as a member. He was selected as a Georgia delegate to the National American Legion Convention in New York City. He became a member of the Wrens United Methodist Church at an early age. He served as church treasurer for many years and held other offices on the Administrative Board. He taught the Wesley Sunday School Class until his health forced him to give up his teaching duties.
Mr. Stephens was a public spirited citizen of Wrens and served as part of the Wrens City Council from 1982 until his death. A member of the Jefferson County Library Board, he was also a past president of the Friends of the McCollum Library and was serving as treasurer at the time of his death. He served on the Fire Department Committee and supported the department in their continued improvements to the department. He was fond of the Little League Baseball program and spent many enjoyable hours watching the youngsters play.
The funeral was March 23 at 2 p.m. at the Wrens United Methodist Church with the Revs. Roy White and Race Lariscy officiating. Burial was in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Robert M. Stephens, Wrens; a brother, C.W. Stephens, Wrens; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Stephens Richardson and Norma Stephens Godowns, both of Orangeburg, SC; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Wayne Davis, Robert Steed, John Stephens, Billy English, Stephen Bates and Phillip Bates.
Honorary pallbearers were the American Legion Post #229.

Mr. Henry Gibson Downs, 75, of Gibson died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the V.A. Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Downs, a native of Glascock County, was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a truck driver.
The funeral was March 23 at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera, with the Rev. Donald Lumpkin officiating. Burial was in the Raley-Downs family cemetery in Edgehill.
Survivors include a son, Verlon G. Downs, Gibson; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Nina Smith Cobb
Mrs. Nina Smith Cobb, 87, of Bartow died Friday, March 22, 2002, in the Extended Care Facility in Sandersville.
Mrs. Cobb, a native and lifelong resident of Jefferson County, was the daughter of the late Noah Lee Smith and the Late Mollie Gay Smith. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, the Women's Missionary Union and the Keenagers Adult Group.
The funeral was March 24 at 3 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Revs. Tom Harrison, Mr. Steve Keener, Rev. George Aycock and Mr. Richard Thigpen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Joy Cobb Jackson, Riddleville; a son, Larry Paul Cobb Sr., Bartow; a brother, Rev. James Northington, Troy, NC; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.

Timothy "Tim" Kevin Wall
Mr. Timothy "Tim" Kevin Wall, 41, of Girard died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Burke Medical Center.
Mr. Wall, a native of Richmond County, spent all of his adult life in Burke County. He was a truck driver for Abbott Oil Company in Augusta and was a member of Corinth Christian Church.
The funeral was March 21 at 2 p.m. at Corinth Christian Church, Girard, with the Revs. Don McClellan and Susan Bargeron officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry P. Wall; his mother and step-father, Jackie and Clyde Dixon, Girard; two daughters, Tina Oglesby, Millen, and Whitney Flakes, Girard; two sons, Tony Flakes and Jessie Flakes, both of Girard; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Milo Joiner, Louisville; five sisters, Candy Weeks, Melanie Godbee and Dana Dixon and Shannon Campbell Ferron, all of Girard, and Loretha Wall, Merritt Island, Fla.; one brother, Randy Wall, Laramie, Wyoming; and two grandchildren.

Bennie Frank Brown
Mr. Bennie Frank Brown, 61, of Davisboro died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Washington Regional Medical Center, Sandersville.
Mr. Brown, a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, was a farmer, logger and a former insurance agent with American General Life Insurance Company.
The funeral was March 21 at 11 a.m. at First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. J. Emory Lindsey officiating. Burial was in the Downs Baptist Church Cemetery.
