Lydia Hattaway-Burgamy

Mrs. Lydia Hattaway-Burgamy Morris, 84, of Augusta died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Morris, a native of Mitchell, was a former pianist with Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was also a former Sunday School teacher of beginner and intermediate children's classes and a member of Cross Bridge Baptist Church.

The funeral was Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. at Platt's Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Gunter from The Hill Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Westover Memorial Park.

Survivors include her stepmother, Mrs. Vestula Hattaway, Mitchell; one son, Norman L. Burgamy, Augusta; two daughters, Mrs. Shelby Burgamy Whigham, Augusta, and Mrs. Marjorie Burgamy Gilmer, Lithia Springs; one step-daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Morris Peacock, Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Edith Williams, Lady Lake, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren.

Memorial may be made to Cross Bridge Baptist Church Building Fund.

Ralph B. Armstrong

Mr. Ralph B. Armstrong, 61, of Stapleton died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in the Medical College of Georgia Medical Center.

Mr. Armstrong, a native of Pickens County, S.C., had lived in Stapleton for several years. He attended Bethel Baptist Church and was retired.

The funeral was Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Ferrell officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Armstrong; a daughter, Pamela Sue Johnson, Dearing; five sons, Donald Lee Hadden and Robert Allen Hadden, both of Thomson, Bobby Gene Hadden and Jesse Leroy Hadden, both of Boneville; and Jimmy Hadden, Dearing; three sisters, Reba Gilstrap, Easley, S.C., Dale Moser and Mary Posey, both of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, James Armstrong, Travelers Rest, S.C., and Johnny Armstrong, Easley; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Travis Hadden, Jonathan Hadden, Jake Gilstrap, Cory Gilstrap, Daniel Garrett, Joey Eskew and Michael Armstrong.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Blanche Burton

Mrs. Blanche Burton, 65, of Louisville died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Burton, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church where she served on the ushers board for many years.

The funeral was Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. at Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Fredrick Ricks officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Willie T. Burton Sr.; her children, Jonas Gamble, Mattie Burton and Arthur Burton of Louisville, Ruthie Gamble of Wrens and Willie Burton of Germany; her mother, Ruthie Calhoun of Bartow; siblings, Gladys Hall, Anna Calhoun and Susie Calhoun of Jacksonville, Addie Jones, Tommie Gibbons and Johnnie Gibbons of Augusta, Rebecca Burton and Betty Burton of Louisville, Melvin Brookins and Willie Brookins of Bartow, Jewel Thompson of Hephzibah, Geneva Burton, Essie Burton, Willie Mae Burton, Thelma Burton, Henry Burton, Luke Gibbons and Mark Gibbons of New Jersey; and Jantha Kittles of Louisville.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Billie Butts

Mrs. Billie Butts, 79, of Martinez died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002.

Mrs. Butts, a native of Pelion, SC, was a homemaker.

The funeral was Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. at Platt's Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Harmon from West Acres Baptist Church and the Rev. Bill Hilley from Grace Baptist Church officiating. Burial was at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include her son, Douglas Butts, Gibson; a daughter, Sue Jones, Martinez; one sister, Mrs. Vernell NeSmith, Savannah; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Douglas Oglesby, Tim Spivey Jr., Jimmy Lowe, Alvin Postell, Jack Sheppard, Henry Dyches, Gene Sutton and Frank Burnett.

Memorials can be made to West Acres Baptist Church, 555 Gibbs Road, Evans, Ga. 30809.

Josephine Woodard

Mrs. Josephine Woodard of Wadley died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

The funeral was Feb. 3 at 2:30 p.m. at San Clair Baptist Church in Wadley with the Rev. Joe L. Pagye officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie Otis Woodard; three daughters, Joann Lee Norris, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Pauline Lee Day, Hollywood, Fla., Ruby Woodard Thomas, Louisville; four sons, John Wesley Lee and Craig Woodard, Wadley, Otis Woodard and Charles Woodard, Hollywood, Fla.; one sister, Johnnie Mae Walden, Hollywood, Fla.; three brothers, Charlie Jackson, Wadley, Willie Anderson Jackson, Bridgeport, Conn. And Clarence Jackson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 35 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

John Thomas Meadows

Mr. John Thomas Meadows, 57, of Matthews died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at his residence.

Mr. Meadows, born in Sandersville, was a member of Wadley Baptist Church and a truck driver.

The funeral was Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at Coleman's Chapel United Methodist Church with Dr. Ernest Purcell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Meadows; two sons, Thomas Wesley Meadows, Wrens, and Jessie Darin Meadows, Perry; two stepdaughters, Lynn Lewis, Warner Robins, and Melody Story, Gibson; one stepson, Jim Caswell, Matthews; his mother, Daisy Meadows Jenkins, Wadley; a sister, Janice Meadows Ratchford, Wadley; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were George Ratchford Jr., Thomas Ratchford, James Caswell, Clint Lewis, Clinton Lewis and Tony Colvin.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

R. Stewart Lester

R. Stewart Lester, DDS, 69, of Atlantic Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002.

Dr. Lester was the son of Rufus E. and Imogene McCrary Lester of Wadley. He graduated from the University of Georgia and Emory University School of Dentistry in 1955. He served in the Army Dental Corp for two years and then practiced dentistry in Jacksonville, Fla. for 44 years.

A memorial service was held Jan. 21 in Atlantic Beach, Fla. Graveside services were held at the City cemetery in Wadley on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Lester; a daughter, Lynne Garza; two sons, John Lester and Sam Lester; two stepsons, Gary Hassler and Greg Hassler; five grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or to Community Presbyterian Church, Atlantic Beach, Fla.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Margaret Poole

Mrs. Margaret Poole, 91, of Keysville died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at the Burke County Medical Center.
Graveside services were Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Keysville United Methodist Church cemetery with Dr. James M. Ford and the Rev. Tommy Fussell officiating services.

Survivors include a son, Jimmy Poole, Keysville; two daughters, Hazel Eason and Alice Howard, both of Keysville; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Poole is preceded in death by her husband, James Everett Poole, and her parents, Larry and Etta Taylor.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the Keysville United Methodist Church Cemetery, P.O. Box 107, Keysville, Ga. 30816.

Melvin Ray Carpenter

Mr. Melvin Ray Carpenter, 62, of Bartow died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Old Capital Inn Nursing Facility, Louisville.

Mr. Carpenter, a native of Burke County, was a US Army Veteran. He was a Methodist who attended Pittman Park Methodist Church, Statesboro. Prior to moving to Bartow a few months ago, Mr. Carpenter had lived in Statesboro, where he was formerly employed as a bookkeeper with Bulloch County.

Graveside services were held Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery, Waynesboro, with the Rev. Gene Sheffield and Dr. David Carter officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Martin Carpenter; his mother, Mrs. Joel M. Carpenter, Waynesboro; one daughter, Cathy Sheffield, McDonough; one son, Marc Carpenter, Augusta; three stepsons, David Smith, Don Smith and Marty Harris; two brothers, Louis Carpenter, Waynesboro, Larry J. Carpenter, Epworth; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Larry Cox, Wayne Weddon, Jimmy Simmons, Danny Woodard, Stan Jenkins and Frank Allen.

DeLoach Funeral Homes, Inc., Waynesboro, was in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth Holzendorf Jr.

Mr. Kenneth Holzendorf Jr., 70, of Thomson died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at University Hospital.

Mr. Holzendorf, a lifelong resident of McDuffie County, was a retired textile supervisor from Thomson Company, London Fog Distribution Center, Washington, Ga., and the National Guard. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Leroy Sunday School Class and a member of the A.J. Miller Masonic Lodge #204 in Thomson.

The funeral was Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Thomson, with Dr. James C. Elder Jr. officiating. Burial was in Westview cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Survivors include his wife Mary Kate (Kaye) Holzendorf; two daughters, Nancy H. Bowers, Conyers, and Mariruth H. Rogers, Aiken, S.C.; two step-daughters, Kelly Wilson, Tignall, and Kim Helmly, Thomson; two step-sons, Michael Bailey, Gibson, and Mitchell Bailey, Thomson; mother, Mrs. Ruth Holzedorf, Gibson; one brother, William F. Holzendorf, Whiteville, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers were William Helmly Jr., William Helmly III, Neal Wilson, Keaton Wilson, Michael Bailey, Mitchell Bailey.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the A.J. Miller Lodge #204.

Memorials may be made to the Masonic Children's Home, 811 Mulberry St., Macon, Ga. 31202-6779.

Theron E. Sills

Mr. Theron E. Sills, 91, of Louisville died on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Glendale Nursing Home, Wadley.

Mr. Sills, a native of Thomson, resided in Louisville most of his adult life. He was a retired mechanic with John Deere Tractor Company in Louisville. He was a member of the Louisville United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. During World War II he worked as a mechanic on the bWarner Robins Air Force Base.

The funeral was Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. at the Louisville City cemetery with the Revs. Ed Dean, Earl Parrish and Larry Montgomery officiating.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Louisville United Methodist Church or the St. Joseph Hospice, 2803 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, Ga. 30909.
