Jessie Paige Harper Eller
Jessie Eller, 89, formerly of Madison, died Monday, October 19, 2010. She was born July 28, 1921 to Dave and Bessie Harper. Mrs. Eller was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She retired from the Federal Government after many years. She loved to crochet and was fond of her dogs Patch and Zippy. Mrs. Eller enjoyed life and being with her family.
She is survived by two sisters Sylvia Hanson and Emogene Hutchins and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Julius Boyd Eller and a son, Phillip Dudley Eller.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 21 at Antioch Baptist Church. Interment was at the church cemetery.

Sandra Jean Ray
Sandra Jean Ray, 67, of Madison passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2010. She was born September 5, 1943 in Atlanta to the late James Jackson and Bertha Moore Jackson. Mrs. Ray was a devoted homemaker. She loved to cook and care for her family.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Ray; children, Sherry Archer and Rich, Ricky Shields and Cathy, Brian Shields, Angela Heath and Jim and Bobby Ray; siblings, Jimmy Jackson, Billy Jackson, Patsy Reed and Sonny Jackson; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and other survivors Evelyn Nichols, Christine Bentley, Mildred Cunard and Leonard Ray. Mrs. Ray was preceded in death by her son, Terry Ray.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 22 in the chapel of A. E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment followed at Almand cemetery in Apalachee.

Willie Mood McHugh Harper
Willie Mood McHugh Harper, 89, of Mansfield passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2010. She was born in Fairplay to James Franklin McHugh and Willie Mae Few McHugh on December 7, 1920. Mrs. Harper was the oldest living member of Beacon Heights Baptist Church. She had perfect attendance at Sunday school for 27 consecutive years. She was a clerk at Baldwin’s Drugs for a number of years. She loved her church, friends and caring for her family.
Mrs. Harper is survived by her brother Foster McHugh, a number of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her husband George Lee Harper preceded her in death.
Graveside service was held at 4 p.m. Friday, October 22 at Madison Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Beacon Heights Baptist Church.

George Henry Peek
George Henry Peek Sr., 81, of Madison died Friday, October 22, 2010. Mr. Peek was born in Walton County on July 4, 1929 to Berry and Vallie Roland Peek. On July 4, 1952 he married
Sarah Spears. Mr. Peek was retired from the State Parks and Recreations Department. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He will be remembered as a family man. He enjoyed camping trips and vacations but only if he was surrounded by his family. He loved to visit with his friends and never met a stranger.
Mr. Peek is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sarah Spears Peek and their five children, Patricia Ross and Mike, Joy Mines and Kenny, George Henry “Bubba” Peek Jr. and Alice, Foster Peek and Shelia and Beth Pickett; grandchildren, Sharron Ross and Kasey, Jamie Pritchett and Daniel, Josh Tinseth, Dustin Peek and Dixie, Tonya Peek, Eli Peek, Jacob Peek, Sami Jo Jenkins and Justin, Brittany Jones and Steven, Brandon Pickett, Ashley Pickett and Evonne Pickett; great-grandchildren, Tristan, Tabitha and Sebastian Lemonds, Bonnie Jenkins and Caleb Pritchett; one sister, Martha Sue Thomas, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Peek was preceded in death by brother Tommy Peek, and sisters Jewell Freeman and Jessie Lou Malcom.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 24 in the chapel at A. E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment was in the Madison City Cemetery.

Ernest Grady “Bud” Arthur
Ernest Grady “Bud” Arthur, 94, of Madison passed away Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born in Morgan County on May 5, 1916 to the late Grady Arthur and Arvie Mae Doster Arthur.
Mr. Arthur was a lifelong member of Madison, where he owned and operated a gas station for many years. He was an active member of Madison Baptist Church where he sang and played his harmonica in the adult choir. He also served his country in the Army where he earned a Purple Heart during World War II.
Mr. Arthur was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Burch Arthur. He is survived by his son Ernest Ronald Arthur; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held Saturday, October 9 at 2 p.m. at Madison Memorial Park in Madison.

Ginger Almand
Ginger Almand, 45, of Rutledge passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2010. She was born September 6, 1965 to John Almand and the late Catherine Stewart Milburn. Ms. Almand loved dolphins of which she had a large collection. She also was very close and cared for by her great nieces. She was a hard worker who will be missed by those she knew.
Ms. Almand is survived by her father, John Almand; siblings Terry Almand and Angela, Donna Anderson and Wade, Jimmie Dickens, John Usher Almand and Jane Almand. She is also survived by niece Renee Noggle and Gary and great nieces Mary and Molly Noggle; and many nieces and nephews as well. She was preceded in death by her mother, Catherine Stewart Milburn and a brother, Chad Dickens.
Funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Friday, October 8 at A. E. Carter Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Almand cemetery in Apalachee.
Pallbearers included nephews Orin Anderson, Ethan Anderson and Brandon Almand; cousins, Andrew Griffith and Mike Griffith and brother-in-law Lee Harvey.

Margaret Moseley Perkins
Margaret Moseley Perkins, 97, died Friday, October 8, 2010 at Morgan Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 26, 1913 in Putnam County, the daughter of the late Benjamin Ainsworth Moseley and Effie Marshall Moseley. She majored in education at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. After finishing college she taught school in Lyons and Thomaston. She was a deputy Clerk of Morgan Superior Court for 30 years. Mrs. Perkins was a member of Madison Baptist Church and worked in the Sunday School Nursery for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice Francis Perkins who passed away in 1985. She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Perkins Morris and husband Roy; two grandchildren, Jeb Alan Morris and his wife Megan Howard Morris and Elizabeth Morris Lee and husband Byron and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Madison Memorial Park at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 11 with Dr. Jim Ross officiating.

Tammi Ward
Tammi Ward, 46, of Madison passed away Monday, October 11, 2010. She was born November 5, 1963 in East Point to the late Hugh Brown and Earline Craig Brown. Mrs. Ward moved to Madison 11 years ago and was a member of White Oak First Baptist Church. She was employed by Mid South Lumber where she was office manager. Mrs. Ward was a dedicated homemaker, wife and mother. She loved spending time outdoors as well as being with family and friends.
Mrs. Ward is survived by her husband, Mike Ward, a daughter, Mackenzie Ward; siblings, Chip Brown and Sandy Michelle Talcott and Lyn and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh Brown and Earline Brown.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 15 in the chapel of A. E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment followed at Madison City Cemetery.

Sadie Bell Cronic Porter
Sadie Bell Porter, 98, of Madison passed away October 12, 2010. She was born March 24, 1912 to Hillary Cronic and Bunnie Bell Cronic. Mrs. Porter was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and was involved with the churches women’s fellowship. She was a member of the Buckhead-Bethany Community Club. Mrs. Porter loved to crochet and gardening. She was a very talented and special lady.
Mrs. Porter is survived by her children, Irene Paul and Bill, Bunnie Schmitt and Jim, daughter-in-law, Dottie Porter; grandchildren, Chip Porter and Shannon, Marci Campbell and Jeff, Sarah Schmitt and Jamie Schmitt and Caycee; great-grandchildren, Clay Porter, Will Porter, Ben Porter, Sadie Campbell and Ella Porter Campbell; siblings, Kate Cathey, Frances Brewer, Nell Porter and Blanche Wilson.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 14 at Bethany Baptist Church. Interment followed at the church cemetery.

Paul Wingfield Reid
Paul Wingfield Reid, 87, of 823 Park Lane, Madison, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.
Born August 25, 1923, in his ancestral home, the Hunter House in Madison, he was the son of the late Paul Wingfield Reid Sr. and Mamie Hunter Burney, and stepson of the late Patrick Shields Burney, also of Madison.
He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Kathleen Harper, formerly of Thomasville, in 2000, a brother, Hudson Hunter Reid of Madison, and a sister Isabelle Reid Chevlin and her husband, Lt Col. Myron Chevlin of Kailua, Hawaii.
Educated in the Madison school system, he later graduated from Georgia Military College in 1942 and attended the University of Georgia, majoring in business, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.
In 1942 he entered military service with the United States Army, training at Camp Swift, Texas. He was a staff sergeant and machine gunner in H Company, 2nd Battalion, 406th Regiment, 102nd Infantry Division, United States Ninth Army, and saw action in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, earning two battle stars for the Ardennes and Rhineland Campaigns. After the war he served in the Army counter intelligence corps before returning home in 1946.
He began his professional life as a sales representative for Madison-based Richter-Cochran Company and in the 1950s worked as a cotton broker with the Paul H. Ponder Company and in the family business, Hunter Furniture Company. He later specialized in the fastener, container, and aerospace industries as a manufacturers representative for Gillett & Eaton Company, Gould Corporation, Camloc, Rex Chainbelt, and Edgewater Marine, among others. He held a fastener patent. In the final years of his working career he served as a national account manager for Madison-based Pennington Seed Company.
He served on the Madison Airport Authority, Madison Industrial Development Board, Madison Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of American Legion Post 37. In addition he was among a group of visionary Madisonians who, as part of the Morgan County Foundation helped transform the old Madison Grade School, an 1895 Romanesque Revival facility that he attended as a young boy into the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, a widely acclaimed regional visual and performing arts center. It was during his board chairmanship of the MMCC that the facility was renovated and dedicated in 1976 with a keynote address by then governor George Busbee.
Mr. Reid was a member of and served as Sunday school secretary at Madison Baptist Church for many years before following his wife up the street to Madison Presbyterian Church after she accepted the position of church organist, which she held for 20 years prior to her death.
Witty and humorous, and a great admirer of those qualities in others, he was an accomplished storyteller, especially when it involved characters and history of Madison, and loved the company of friends and family. He was always thrilled to welcome newcomers to the community and church. His many interests included music, especially classical and big bands, aviation, science, astronomy, history, geography, golf and tennis.
A loving husband, father, uncle and grandfather and friend to many, he is survived by sons Paul Wingfield Reid III of Madison, and Frank Hunter Reid and his wife, Jeanne Symmes Reid, and grandson Alexander Symmes Reid of Greenville, South Carolina, and a daughter, Kathleen (Kathy) Reid Bangle and her husband, Dr. James Francis Bangle, and grandsons James Francis Bangle Jr. and Reid Harper Bangle of Athens, along with a brother and sister-in law, James K. (Jimmy) Harper and his wife Claire of Atlanta, a nephew and three nieces.
The family would like to express its deepest appreciation to the staff at the Madison House, Madison Police Department, Morgan County EMS, doctors, nurses and staff at Atlanta Medical Center, Landmark Hospital of Athens, St. Mary’s Hospital of Athens, and Morgan Memorial Hospital / TCU, and St. Mary’s Hospice for their professionalism and loving care. In addition the family is most grateful to the members of Madison Presbyterian Church and numerous other Morgan County churches and citizens of Madison and Morgan County for their steadfast, prayerful support and love on behalf of our father and family over the last several months.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice or to either The Paul W. and Kathleen H. Reid Memorial Fund, which has been established through the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center in support of music programming or the Madison Presbyterian Church.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 18 at the Madison Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gary Cecil officiating. Interment was in Madison Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Sonny Pennington, Robert Pennington, Dan Pennington, Wayne Vason, Hank Bell, Mark Neugebauer, Whitey Hunt and Larry Massey.

Mimi Mitchell Tufts
Mimi Mitchell Tufts died Saturday, October 16, 2010 at her home in Athens. She is survived by her sister, Jane Hollingsworth of Dallas, Texas; her son, Mitchell Tufts of Reno, Nevada and her daughter, Melissa Tufts, of Comer, as well as her grandchildren, Joseph Tufts, John Tufts, Katherine Cole Tufts, Wilcox Tufts and Jackson Tufts. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1925, Mimi Tufts was the daughter of John E. and Miriam Mitchell. She was raised in Dallas, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. She was married
to the late Rutledge Tufts of Atlanta, where they raised their family. Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Tufts settled in Madison, where they lived for over 20 years. Mimi spent her life as a homemaker and community volunteer. She was among the first class of women elders at the First Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and served as President of the Peachtree Garden Club during the 1970s.
A memorial service for Mimi Mitchell Tufts will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Athens, on Saturday, October 23 at 10 a.m. with a reception following the service.

Charles L. Frazier
Charles L. Frazier, age 56, died Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at home in Maplewood, N.J. Mr. Frazier was born December 29, 1953 in Greensboro, Ga., and lived in Madison, Ga., before moving to Maplewood, N.J.
He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Frazier was a Volunteer for the Red Cross, East Orange, N.J., and First Aid Squad, West Orange, N.J.
He is survived by his mother, Eulon Bass Frazier; his sister, Jackie Lawrence; cousin, Alice Jenkins, and a host of relatives.
A graveside service will be held 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 14 at Brig. General William Doyle's Veterans Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Road, Wrightstown, N.J.
Millie Daniel Malcom
Millie Daniel Malcom, age 86, of Madison, died on October 6, 2010. She was born in Madison on March 31, 1924 to the late Calvin George Daniel and the late Lessie Mae Peters Daniel. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late George “Bennie” Malcom; her son, the late Ben Malcom; her sister, the late Doris Daniel; and her brother, the late Harold Daniel.
Surviving are: sisters, Dot Prather of Monroe and Drew Willie Atha of Monroe; grandchild, Keith and Lisa Malcom of Madison; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Malcom and Gregory Malcom.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Sandy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Butch Lee officiating. Interment followed at Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Cristal Marie Williams Bray
Cristal Marie Williams Bray, 36, of Madison died September 27, 2010. She was born September 21, 1974 in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Larry Earl Williams and Ruth Elaine Adcock Williams.
Surviving are son: Austin Bray of Madison; mother: Elaine Williams of Oxford; sisters: Demmie Stephens of Madison, Tisha Dalton of Monroe, Elaina Preston of Monroe; brother and sister-in-law: Quentin and Jane Williams of Blountville, Tenn.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, October 1 at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Russell Davis officiating and music by Rhonda Carrier and Harriet Jett Kilpatrick. Interment followed at Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Adam Dalton, Brian Dalton, DJ Stephens, Daniel Stephens, Chip Morris, and Matt Kluge.
