Nell Smith Onica

Nell Smith Onica, 89, formerly of Madison died November 22, 2010. She was the daughter of Benjamin F. Smith and Maudie Austin Smith. She was born October 1, 1921 in Randolph County, Alabama. Mrs. Onica was married to the late James McConnell and the late James Onica. She worked as a weaver in the textile industry and later for Ford Motor Company. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lithia Springs. While in Madison she was a member of Cornerstone Worship Center.

Mrs. Onica is survived by her son, Bobby McConnell (Mary) and a step-daughter Michelle Hight; three sisters, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, James McConnell and Jim Onica and a daughter, Laura McConnell.

The family received friends from 10 a.m. until noon Friday, November 26 at A. E. Carter Funeral Home. The funeral service followed at 1:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Worship Center with interment at Madison Memorial Park.

Jerry Bern Hicks

Jerry Bern Hicks, 46, of Madison died Monday, November 22, 2010. He was born October 30, 1964 to John and Lillian Scoggins Hicks. He worked as a welder until becoming disabled.

He is survived by his mother, Lillian Hicks and a daughter Olivia Saxon; his siblings, Randy Hicks, Shelia Hicks, William Earl Hicks, Rebecca Knight, Jennie Bryant and Danny Ray Hicks. He was preceded in death by his father John P. Hicks and two brothers, John Hicks Jr. and Mark Anthony Hicks.

The family received friends from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, November 23. Funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 24 in the Chapel of A. E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment was at Buckhead Cemetery.

Mary Evelyn Loyd Allen

Mary Evelyn Loyd Allen, 86, died November 22, 2010 at Athens Regional Medical Center with her children at her side. The daughter of the late Marvin and Eunice (Crenshaw) Loyd, she was born in Newton County on July 20, 1924. Her passion was playing bridge with her close friends. She also had a deep love for her family. Mrs. Allen was a homemaker and also assisted with the family business, Allen Implement and Seed Company. Her husband, William F. Allen; a sister Carolyn Herring and a brother, Leo Loyd, preceded her in death. Mrs. Allen was a longtime resident of Madison but for the past 18 months she had resided at Family Life Enrichment Center in High Shoals. She was very happy there and received excellent care.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her daughter, Sandra Allen of Norcross, two sons, Bill Allen (Angela) of Braselton and Ben Allen (Carole) of Palm Coast, Florida; five grandchildren, Christian, Ashley, Tiffany, Cooper and Michael; four great-grandchildren, Will, Abbey, Gavin and Annabell; and a brother, Ray Loyd of Warner Robbins; and numerous other family and friends.

The family received friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 27 at A. E. Carter Funeral Home. A graveside service followed at 3 p.m. at Madison City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Harold Nicholson Veasley "Dude"

Harold Nicholson Veasley “Dude”, 86, died Sunday, November 21, 2010. He was born March 18, 1924 in Madison to the late James “Jim” Veasley and Ida Mae Jones Veasley.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was employed at Morgan Sportswear in Madison for many years, where he was a truck driver. He later worked for Schneider Company in Madison as a custodian. He was a lover of the great outdoors and was indeed an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also an excellent cook in the kitchen and was a master at roasting pigs and chickens over an open pit. Along with “Uncle Hubbard” and “Uncle Blue” much time was spent stirring up their world’s famous barbecue a well-known “Veasley” tradition. Later in life he was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Lena Mae Walker and to this union five children were born.

He leaves to cherish his memory five devoted children: three sons, Harold (Diane) Veasley of Madison; Aaron (Cheryl) Veasley of Stockbridge; and David Veasley of Conyers; two daughters, Debbie Ann Veasley of Stone Mountain and Darlene (Roderick) Harvey of Conley; mother-in-law, Everlene Walker of Stone Mountain; three brothers, Austin (Mollie) Veasley and Henry (Katherine) Veasley, both of Madison; and Albert (Sonny) Veasley of Louisville, Kentucky; three sisters, Willie Mae (Joe) Waller of Eatonton, Frances Parks of Athens and Minerva Green of Smyrna; six grandchildren Christell, Franco, Sophia, Jessica, Roderick II (RJ) and Aaron Jr. (AJ); 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends along with the Calvary Baptist Church Family.

Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, November 26 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Hoke L. Smith Jr. pastor officiating. Interment was in Fairview City Cemetery.

Flower attendants were his grandchildren, nieces and friends of the family. Casket attendants were his nephews and friends of the family.

Final arrangements entrusted to Jones & Turner Funeral Services.

Julia (Lily) Foskey

Julia (Lily) Foskey of Panama City Beach, Fla., entered into eternal rest with her Heavenly Father on November 19, 2010. She was born December 20, 1937 in Amsterdam, Holland and was one of eight siblings. She survived the Holocaust as a young girl and had very vivid memories of the fears, despair and hopelessness her family experienced during this time.

Mrs. Foskey was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Clyde Foskey, her mother, father and step-father and three siblings. She is survived by her loving son and daughter, Jim Clyde Foskey and Kathryn of Madison, and Donna Foskey Moreau and David of Panama City Beach. She is also survived by her beloved grandson, Jameson Clyde Foskey of Madison and a step-son, DJ and Ruth Ann Moreau of Panama City and long-time close friend, Kimi Goins of Birmingham. Rocky, her Yorkie was her loyal and constant companion. Additional survivors include a brother, Harry Kompier of Panama City and Mirjiam, Wilhelm and Roby Vieleers of Amsterdam, Holland.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. We will miss her heavy Dutch accent and strong personality but we will love her through eternity and cherish our wonderful memories. A memorial service was held in Panama City on November 20 and a private graveside service and burial will be held at Beulah Baptist Church cemetery in Glenwood at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Emerald Gulf Coast Hospice in memory of Julia Foskey at 2925 MLK Blvd., Panama City, FL 32405.

James Frank Stovall, Jr.

James Frank Stovall, Jr., 90, died Friday, November 12 at his Atlanta home with his wife, Betty Taylor Stovall of 61 years at his bedside. He was the son of Claire Thomas and James Frank Stovall, Sr. of Madison. He is also survived by his children, James F. Stovall III and wife, Sue of Roswell, Virginia S. Kendall and husband, Wayne of Roswell, Betty Stovall of Alpharetta, and John Stovall of Americus; his five grandchildren, James F. Stovall IV and wife, Chrissy, Claire Stovall, Sarah Stovall Martinez and husband, Pablo, Robert Kendall and Katherine Kendall; and a great-grandchild, James Frank Stovall V.
Frank Stovall retired from United Cotton Goods Company of Griffin, in 1985. Outside his family and business, his proudest accomplishment was his long-term relationship with Georgia Tech. In 1999 he was awarded the Joseph Mayo Pettit Alumni Distinguished Service Award and was speaker at that year’s graduation at which his grandson received his Georgia Tech diploma. In 1998, he was inducted into the College of Engineering Hall of Fame. He twice served on the Georgia Tech Alumni Association board of trustees and was president for the 1972-73 year. An emeritus member of the Georgia Tech Foundation, he served his first term in 1977. He was an emeritus member of the former Tech-Georgia Development Fund, serving both as director and treasurer. He was co-chairman of the Class of 1941 50th Reunion Committee, co-chairman of the Endowment Council for 1984-1985 and a member of the Legislative Network. He also served on the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center board until 1985.
A native of Madison, he graduated high school from Georgia Military College in Milledgeville. He received a degree from Georgia Tech in 1941 in Textile Engineering. At Tech he was president of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, senior class secretary, vice president of the student council and a member of ANAK. After graduation he moved to New York City to become a textile buyer for U.S. Rubber Company but World War II called him to service into the Army Air Force. After the war he returned to Madison and pursued several business ventures. There he met his wife, Betty Taylor, a Greensboro native, who had come to Madison to teach school. They married in 1949 and moved to Atlanta in 1951. He started his textile sales career at Joshua L. Bailey & Co. In 1959 he became co-owner of United Cotton Goods Co. and had plants in Griffin and Seguin, Texas. In 1980, they sold the company to a German concern and he continued working there for five years. After retirement, he and Betty moved to Atlanta and Naples, Fla., leaving many good friends in Griffin and the United Cotton Goods family.
Frank and his wife, Betty were also long-time supporters of the Republican Party. He was alternate delegate at the 1968 national convention, and was active in the campaigns of many early candidates like Bo Callaway for Governor and Newt Gingrich for Congress. He testified before a Congressional Committee in Atlanta that the free enterprise system worked better with limited government control.
He will long be remembered for his trademark bow tie and the business advice he gave everyone whom he encountered, “Keep selling.” His family is also comforted that he daily professed that he had a wonderful life. He was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church, a current member of the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church of Atlanta and also attended the First United Methodist Church of Naples.
A private burial service will be held at the Madison City Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 20 at 11 a.m. to celebrate Frank’s “wonderful life” at the First United Methodist Church in Madison. The Stovall family is appreciative of the care received by Hospice Compassionate Care. In lieu of flowers, please send a contribution to your favorite charity.

Rudolph William Vaala

Rudolph William Vaala, 74, of Madison, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday morning, Nov. 11, 2010. He is survived by his wife Jeanne, his son Daniel, his daughter Julie Noland, his brother David, and his sister Janice Hillstrom. The sixth of seven siblings, Rudolph, or Rudy, was born in Madison, Minn., July 25, 1936. He was a teacher, a veteran, and a civil servant. He was a quiet and unassuming true gentleman who exemplified such qualities as honesty, empathy, and integrity. He loved his family above all else. Always polite and thoughtful of others, he will be very missed. The funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 18, 2 p.m. at Madison Baptist Church, 328 S. Main St., Madison, GA 30650.

Pamela Jane Cleveland Wages

Pamela Wages, 47, of Good Hope passed away November 15, 2010. She was born August 8, 1963 to Franklin Cleveland and Alma Jane Brown Harvard. Mrs. Wages was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. She was employed by Lafarge for many years. She loved to read and do crossword puzzles. Mrs. Wages enjoyed her grandchildren and her chickens. She will be missed by her family and many friends.
Mrs. Wages is survived by her husband Derrick Wages; her mother Alma Jane Harvard and Wes, her father Frank Cleveland and Janet; her children Ginger Petersen and Brian, Tiffany Vining and Sebastian, Anthony Rhoades, Jeremy Wages and Erica Stassford and Brian; grandchildren Trenton Rhoades, Ian Petersen, Kinsey Vining, Kelsey Vining, Hunter Stassford and Barret Stassfort.
The family received friends Wednesday, November 17 at A. E. Carter Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 18 at Harmony Baptist Church in Good Hope. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Annette Copelan Wiley

Annette Wiley, 92, of Conyers, formerly of Rutledge, passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Westbury Health and Rehab. She was born September 21, 1918 in Greensboro to William Copelan and Nettie Baugh Copelan. Mrs. Wiley was a member of Rutledge Baptist Church. She was a seamstress for many years. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and playing bingo.
Mrs. Wiley is survived by her children Martha Williams and Andy and Harold Wiley and Pat; three grandchildren, Lisa Geys, Diana Wiley and Elizabeth Bohler; one great-grandchild Peyton Bohler; a daughter-in-law, Rachel Wiley Deloach. Mrs. Wiley was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Howard Wiley and two children Joe Wiley and Jimmy Wiley.
The family received friends Friday evening, November 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13 in the chapel of A. E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment was at Rutledge City Cemetery.

Lena Mae Stapp Shelton

Lena Mae Stapp Shelton, 85, died November 4, 2010 at Family Life Enrichment Center in High Shoals. A native of Madison, she was born to Walter Lonnie and Mary Laura “Mollie” Stapp on November 17, 1924. She married Willie Ewing Shelton on December 23, 1939. Mrs. Shelton was a remarkable and hard working woman who was a devoted, caring and loving mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Nancy Shelton Carson, great-granddaughter Laura Ashley (Sissy) Epps and grandson Danny Savage. She is survived by her five children, Mary (James) Savage, Watkinsville; Rita Kinney, Jerry (Patricia) Shelton, Diane Crosby and David (Carol) Shelton, Rutledge; sister Louise (Earl) Scarborough; son-in-law Donald Carson; 17 grandchildren, Todd Huff, Rodney (Cynthia) Huff, Keith (Cindy) Savage, Donna Carson (Don) Bradshaw, Deborah Carson (Greg) Peck, Dana Carson (Tripp) Edwards, Darlene Carson Rhines, Dawn Carson, Melanie Kinney (Shawn) Davis, Terri Ann Shelton Epps, Jason Lamar Shelton, Amy Shelton, Mary Beth Shelton, Evelyn (James) Guinn, Lee (Michele) Crosby, Jeffrey Crosby, Chris Shelton; great-grandchildren, Lauren Huff, Lee Huff, Eric Savage, C. J. Savage, Allen (Danielle) Peck, Clay Peck, Samatha Peck, Derek Edwards, Dylan Edwards, Daniel Edwards, Brady Rhines, Maddie Rhines, Jimmy Epps III, Joshua Epps, Jason Lamar Shelton Jr., Katilynn Shelton, Sabrina Shelton, Zack Shelton, Chloe Shelton, Jipsy Morgan, Candace Thomas Shelton, Zachary Myers, Zayden Myers, Ciera Carter, Emily Low, Michael Guinn, Shawn Guinn, Emily Crosby, Brittany Shelton and Kristen Shelton, Jack Etheredge; great-great-grandchildren, Lacey Peck and Luke Peck.

Visitation was Friday, November 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 6, at A. E. Carter Funeral Home.

Interment was at Stapp cemetery in Rutledge.

Bob Bracewell

Bob Bracewell left this world peacefully on October 29, 2010. He entered eternal peace to join his parents, Melvin Hubert Bracewell, Sr. and Ethel Dunnavant Bracewell; his infant sister, Lilian Grace; and his beloved wife of 60 years, Sara Brock Bracewell. For now, he leaves those whom he loved so deeply and so well: his children, Michael Bracewell and Janice Bracewell Fuller; his children by marriage, Ruth Barrow Bracewell and Ronald Fuller; his brothers, Hubert and Dan Bracewell; his sisters, Kate Godwin, Pauline McFatter, Esther Woodham, and Ruth Clance. He also leaves those for whom he became and always will be Grandaddy: his grandchildren, Lori, Britt, and Bobby Fuller; his grandchild by marriage, Nydia Garcia Fuller; and his great-grandchildren, Carina, Mariana, Oran, Analise, and Brock Fuller. God has more than blessed each one to have had Bob as our father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Bob was born in Dale County, Alabama on September 25, 1922, and lived much of his adult life in Mableton. Bob picked cotton, plowed fields, served his country in WWII, had long careers at Skil Corporation and General Motors, and could fix or rig just about anything. This sweet, gentle man took care of his younger siblings at home, his fellow soldiers at Lawson General Hospital, his children and family, and many relatives and friends in need, most especially his beloved Sara. Love is patient, and love is kind. He was both, and he will be missed.

Without exception, everyone who knew him recognized what a truly special, gentle, good, and loving man he was. The family is grateful for the availability of RFD TV, which provided many hours of pleasure over recent years. More recently, the family is grateful for the skilled experience of Wellstar Hospice, which brought comfort over recent weeks. The funeral service was Monday, November 1, 2010 with the interment at West Family Cemetery. Donations may be made to Trinity Methodist Church, 821 S. Hoy L. Edwards

Hoy L. Edwards, 85, Athens died Wednesday, October 27, 2010.

A longtime resident of Athens, Mr. Edwards was the son of the late Charles and Mabel Edwards and was preceded in death by a sister, Lucibell Edwards and brothers, Don and Howard Edwards.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Gault Edwards; daughter and son-in-law, Trois and Max Wall; grandsons and their families, Eric, Mary and Tristan Wall; Kurt, Susie, Max and Maggie Wall; sister, Margaret Fitzpatrick; brothers, Joe and Dean Edwards and their spouses, Ed, Haywood and Betty.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 29 at Evergreen Memorial Park with Rev. Max Wall officiating.

Joe Stewart Johnson Sr.

Joe Stewart Johnson Sr., 82 of Rutledge, passed away October 30, 2010. He was born January 29, 1928. Due to his health Mr. Johnson retired in 1975. He has resided in Morgan County for the past 15 years. He was a member of Centennial Baptist Church. He enjoyed completing crossword puzzles everyday to keep his mind active. He loved listening to gospel music and completing many latch hook projects. As long as he was able he loved playing golf. He is still remembered as a high school sports legend back in North Carolina.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lois Ford Johnson, two children, Joe Johnson Jr. and Deborah Stotz and Dave; three grandchildren; Erika Carruth, Sara Collier and Caitlin Stotz, two great-grandchildren, Damian Carruth and Bailey Carruth; three siblings Jack Johnson, Eleanor Tombrose and Dorothy Miller.

The family received friends Tuesday, November 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, at Centennial Baptist Church with Rev. Wilburn Hill officiating. Interment was at Centennial Baptist Church Cemetery.

Sadie Bell Cronic Porter

Sadie Bell Porter, 98, of Madison passed away October 12, 2010. She was born March 14, 1912 to Hillary Cronic and Bunnie Bell Cronic. Mrs. Porter was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and was involved with the churches women’s fellowship. She was a member of the Buckhead-Bethany Community Club. Mrs. Porter loved to crochet and gardening. She was a very talented and special lady.

Mrs. Porter is survived by her children, Irene Paul and Bill, Bunnie Schmitt and Jim, daughter-in-law, Dottie Porter; grandchildren, Chip Porter and Shannon, Marci Campbell and Jeff, Sarah Schmitt and Jamie Schmitt and Caycee; great-grandchildren, Clay Porter, Will Porter, Ben Porter, Sadie Campbell and Ella Porter Campbell; siblings, Kate Cathey, Frances Brewer, Nell Porter and Blanche Wilson.

Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 14 at Bethany Baptist Church. Interment followed at the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jamie Schmitt, Clay Porter, Dan Porter, Marty Wilson, Gerald Cathey and Chuck Philippi. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church, Odyssey Hospice or the charity of your choice.

William Earl Long II (“Billy”)

William Earl Long II, “Billy, ” died October 11, 2010. He was born in Atlanta on April 12, 1963. Mr. Long worked as a truck driver until he became disabled. He moved to Madison five years ago. Since that time he has attended The Gathering. He enjoyed fishing and reading and trips to the mountains. As long as he was able he liked to garden and can vegetables. He was active in Alcoholics Anonymous and spoke often to groups about the effects of alcoholism.

Memorial services were held Friday, October 22 at 2 p.m. at Carter’s Funeral Home in Madison. He was born April 12, 1961, and he died of a heart attack October 11 at the age of 47.

Born and raised in Hapeville, he moved to Madison five years ago to live on his great-grandparents homestead at 1300 Crawford Road. He is survived by his parents, wife, three children, two siblings and four step-sisters.

He was the son of Lillie Estelle Cromer and Jack of Madison and William Earl Long Sr. of McDonough.

Married to Melinda Dudley of Mableton, their children are William Earl Long III, (“Will”) of Mableton, Christine Melinda Long Barron (Mrs. Blake Barron) of Douglasville and Jessica Nicole Long of Mableton; siblings are Jeffrey Kevin Long of Riverdale and Tammy Estelle Long Powell of Alabama; four step-sisters, Lisette Cromer Rushing of Madison, Ginette Croner Mohon of Buckhead, Sabrina Puckett and Nanette Gibson of McDonough.

Kenneth Klun, pastor of Penfield was in charge of the memorial service.
