James (Smitty) Smith
1911-2004
James Aubrey “Smitty” Smith, 92, of 3736 Atlanta Hwy died Thursday, May 13, 2004.
A native of Grenada, Mississippi, Mr. Smith was the son of the late James Autrey and Minnie Victoria Hughes Smith. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Oneita Douglas Smith in 1960, and by his second wife, Rosslyn Braden Smith, in 1996. He retired after 35 years as an audio-visual specialist with the Georgia Extension Service. A number of his films have been seen around the world and are housed in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Herb Bonner Hunt Club and the Athens First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Barbara Smith, Jr. of Burnsville, NC; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be 3:00 pm Sunday, May 16, 2004 in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 to 3:00pm at the funeral home prior to the services. Mary Freeman "Tubby" Smith
1921-2004
Bogart, Ga - Mary Freeman ?Tubby? Smith, age 83, of Jennings Mill Road passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2004.
A native of Athens, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Randall Stanley and Lily McCall Freeman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Edward Smith, Jr. ?Buck? and son George B. Smith ?Skipper?. She was retired from Sears where she was a long time employee and was a member of the Golden Globes of Milledge Ave. Baptist Church, the retired employees of Sears, and past president of the St. Mary?s Auxiliary. Mrs. Smith was also a member of LIFT and the First United Methodist Church of Athens.
Survivors include daughter Patti Smith (John) Walsh of Watkinsville; daughter Lynn Balch of Jefferson; daughter in law Catherine Smith, Signal Mountain, TN; grandchildren Craig and Anna Marie Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Tricia and Jon Massey and Evan Walsh; great grandchildren, Maddie Smith, Kate and Lauren Massey and and a number of nieces and nephews.
Interment services will be held at 1PM Sunday at Oconee Hill cemetery with memorial services to follow at 3PM Sunday, November 28th, at Highland Hills Village with Rev. Jon Appleton, Rev. Grady Wigley and Dr. Bill Britt officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Highland Hills Village. James "Buddy" Smith
1964-2004
Watkinsville, GA - James ?Buddy? Edwin Smith, 40, of 1071 McRee?s Mill Road, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2004.
A native of Clarke County, Mr. Smith was the son of James Smith of Athens and Frankie Bellew Messer of Winterville. He was the owner of Sonny?s Carpets in Athens. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Madison County. Buddy fell in love and married
Karen Dorsey of Statham. They made their home in Oconee County where she was born and raised.
Survivors in addition to his parents include his wife, Karen Dorsey Smith; sons: Sonny and James Smith; sisters: Pam Weisman, Tammy Smith Allen and Laurie Smith; brother: Jeff Smith; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held 3 pm Thursday December 9, 2004 in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Northcutt officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Allen, Oscar Parada, Craig Guntharp, James Evans, Benny Burgess and Jeff Smith.

Robbie Lee Stone Jr.
1924-2004
Lawrenceville, GA - Robbie Lee Stone, Jr., 79, died April 28, 2004 at home in Lawrenceville.
A native of Athens, Bob was the son of the late Robbie Lee and Emma Eberhart Stone. He graduated from Athens High School in 1941, where he was the 1st Lt. Commanding Officer in the ROTC band. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. As a student at Georgia Tech University, he was a member of Sigma Chi. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1950, he married
Dolores Walker in 1952. In 1955, he started Stone Foods Company, a wholesale food distributing company that served Athens and the surrounding areas for over 25 years. He served as a deacon at the Campus View Church of Christ and was an active member for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores Walker Stone, of Lawrenceville; two daughters and sons-in-law: Karen and Ed Townsend of Lawrenceville, Debra and Bob Storey of Broadway, NC; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Juanita Stone and Jere Clark of Marietta, Priscilla Stone and Sonny Catoe of Athens; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Jerry and Joan Walker of Statesville, NC, Donald Walker of Panama City, FL; four grandchildren, three great grandchildren; five nieces and two nephews.
The funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with Edward Townsend and Mark Brock officiating. Graveside services will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Betty H. Stephenson
1933-2004
Athens - Betty H. Stephenson, 71, of Woodward Way, Athens, wife of Allen D. Stephenson, died April 30, 2004, after several months of illness.
A native of Appling County, Georgia, Mrs. Stephenson was born March 13, 1933 and was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Herrington. She attended Berry College and Atlanta Business College and was a flight attendant with Delta Airlines where she was in the first such group to serve on jets.
She was for a number of years owner of Jo-Lin Fashions and later Betty's Boutique. Her community service included work with both Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary's. She was a Poll Manager for Athens-Clarke County elections and a member of the Glenwood Garden Club. During the years her husband was the Executive Vice President of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, she frequently was the 'unofficial hostess' for the Chamber's activities for visiting industry and trade groups.
Mrs. Stephenson was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Athens where she was in the Senior Adult Choir and in the Jewel Sunday School Class. Her many friends and family members remember her giving nature, her interest in others and such special things as her gifts of homemade fudge and fig preserves.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Ben Lee of Hinesville; daughter Sandra Stephenson of Athens; grandson Stephen Berry of Athens; granddaughters Laura and Kathryn Lee and Jenna Newton of Hinesville; sister and brother-in-law Addie Mae and Cecil Dubberly of Valdosta; brother and sister-in-law Arthur and Laura Lee Herrington of Anniston, Alabama and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 3rd at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Athens with the Dr. Bill Ross and Dr. Jon Appleton presiding. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Athens Building Fund.

Arthur Sturgill
1919-2004
Arthur E. Sturgill, Sr., 85, of 801 Riverhill Drive died Thursday, May 13, 2004.
A native of Keokee, Virginia, Mr. Sturgill was a son of the late Isaac Newton and Lakie B. Fletcher Sturgill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Curtis Strain Sturgill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II and Korea. He retired as a Master Sergeant after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Friendship Christian Church of Athens. After his retirement Mr. Sturgill was a long time resident of Clearwater and while living there was a member of the Disciples of Christ Central Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons: Arthur Sturgill, Jr. of Athens, and Frank Sturgill of Marietta; daughter, Judith Gayler of Texas; brother, Ralph Sturgill of Huntsville, AL; eight grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.
Memorial Services will be held 6:30 pm Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Friendship Christian Church with the Rev. Elizabeth DeWeese officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the services.

William Ambrose Starkey

Athens - William Ambrose Starkey, 81, 240 Roberts Road, died on Monday, May 9, 2005.
A native of Folsom, West Virginia, Mr. Starkey was the son of the late Catherine and Broze Starkey. He was preceded in death by his wife Emily Camp Starkey, a sister, Pauline Bissett and brother, Rutherford Starkey. Mr. Starkey was a retired Merchant marine, served in the United States Navy during WWII and was a member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include stepson, Joseph Stephens of Baltimore, MD; sisters, Helen Ashcroft, Lucille Hood and Violet Hayhurst, all of West Virginia; special friends, Barbara Jean and Peter Bertot.
Funeral services will be held 11 am Wednesday May 11 in the Chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Crist Camden officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bob Hood, Peter Bertot, Jay Jaysingh, Bruce Payne, Tim Payne and Jonathan Cudnik.

Juanita Hearn Suddath
1907-2004
Athens, Ga - Juanita Hearn Suddath, 96, of Riverhill Drive died on Saturday August 14, 2004.
A native of Sumter County Alabama she was the daughter of the late George Bragg and Abbie Sturdivant Hearn. Her husband, Lovick Pierce (Epp) Suddath, Jr., grandson Lovick Pierce Suddath, IV and brother George Bragg Hearn, Jr preceded her in death.
Mrs. Suddath came to Athens in 1926 and began a love affair with the University of Georgia and Athens. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1930 and became a devoted Georgia Bulldog Fan. She was proud to have attended the first game ever-played in Sanford Stadium in which Georgia defeated Yale and also the first Olympics Games played in Sanford Stadium sixty seven years later in 1996. Mrs. Suddath married
Epp Suddath, the original manager of the Varsity on College Avenue in 1934, and they were married
for 64 years before his death in 1999. Mrs. Suddath was a long time devoted and active member of the First Baptist Church for over 70 years where she was a member of the M and M/Jenkins Sunday School Class. She was an avid supporter of the Democratic Party.
The family would like to thank the staff of Talmadge Terrace for all the kindness shown to their mother after she moved there in 1999 and especially the wonderful circle of friends that she came to love.
Survivors include sons Lovick Pierce (Sunny) Suddath III and wife Nina, Amelia Island, FL; and George Hearn Suddath and wife Jewel Deane, Raleigh, NC; daughter Abbie Suddath Davis and husband Jeb, Walnut Cove, NC; grandchildren John and Guy Suddath, Susannah Suddath Sisson, Abigail Davis Blake, Amy, Becton and Bragg Davis, Elizabeth Garden Penn and Robert Garden; 13 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Elisha 'Hamp" Tanner
1927-2004
Winterville, GA - Elijah Hampton Tanner, 77, of Athens passed away Monday December 6, 2004.
A native of Coffee County, Mr. Tanner was a son of the late Elijah A. and Ada Mae Anderson Tanner. He was preceded in death by daughters, Lisa Louise Lavender and Susan Carol Tanner. He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon and attended the University of Georgia on an academic and athletic scholarship where he played football. He went on to play NFL football for the San Francisco 49?s and the Dallas Texans. He is a member of the National Football League Alumni. He retired from Brashears Steel Company in Albany, GA and was employed for the last 10 years at Kroger on College Station Road. He was a member of the Hasan Shrine Temple in Albany and a member of the Green Acres Baptist Church in Athens.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Carolyn Tanner; a daughter, Sherry Lynn Conrad of Cumming; a step-son Ralph Clinton Almond, Jr. of Winterville; a sister: Sara Francis Bannister of Macon.
Funeral Services will be held 2 pm Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at Green Acres Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Comer, GA - Barbara Taylor, 63, of Comer, passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2005.
A native of Fulton, NY, she was preceded in death by her parents, Rolland and Ruth Coe Taylor. She was employed with Athens Regional Medical Center as a registered nurse for 25 years. She is survived by a number of cousins.

Athens, GA - Herbert Wayne Terry, 93, of Iris Place died Thursday, October 28, 2004.
A native of Acworth, Georgia, Mr. Terry was the son of the late Noah Blaine and Mamie Lee Osborne Terry. He was president of Colonial Poultry Company and later manager of Gold Kist Poultry. After retirement he was controller of Terry Inc and Terry Development. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Elliott Garrard Terry of Athens; sons and daughters-in-law: Randolph Wayne and Evelyn Terry of Richmond, VA and Tom and Jan Terry of Spartanburg, SC; daughters and sons-in-law: Suzanne and Walton Young of Duluth, GA and Debra and Mike Wooten of Athens; and sister, Frances Marshall of Athens.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2004 at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kent Reynolds officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Thomas O. Terrell, Jr.

Athens, GA - Thomas Otto Terrell, Jr., 70, of 300 Woodhaven Parkway, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 5, 2004.
A native of Palatka, Florida he was the son of the late Thomas and Muriel Helen Miller Terrell, Sr. He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from Bank of America formerly C&S; Bank where he was employed for 25 years as a consumer credit officer. He was a member, deacon and an usher of Prince Avenue Baptist Church, a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class where he served as class secretary for many years, and was past President of the XYZ?s.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Helen Louise O?Kelley Terrell; a daughter, Terry (Terrell) Bennett of Duluth; and grandchildren: Kevin and Lauren Bennett.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at Prince Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Ricketts and Rev. Doug Nix officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be George Hutchinson, Joe Byrd, Charles Davis, Grover Bennett, Don Willey and Dwight Neil.
