Commerce - Mary Patti Berryman, 57, of Tarpkins Road passed away on September 20, 2004

A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Berryman was the daughter of the late Robert and Charlotte Martin Berryman. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband William Berryman, Commerce; daughter Lori dean, Elberton; brother Robert A. Blackman, Elberton and two grandchildren, Bobby and William Dean of Elberton.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Terry E. Bevers
1955-2004

Winder, GA - Terry Eugene Bevers, 49, of 171 West Midland Avenue died Wednesday, November 17, 2004.

A native of Clarke County, Mr. Bevers was a son of the late J. T. Clarke and Elsie Howington Bevers. He was a moving and storage supervisor and had lived many years in Monroe before moving to Winder. He was a member of the Monroe Congregational Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Lester Bevers of Winder; daughter, Allie Atkinson of Winder; sons: Kevin Bevers, Donny Bevers, Terry James Bevers and Steven Bevers all of Monroe; brother, Jim Bevers of Dallas, TX; and grandchildren: Vanessa Bevers, Logan Bevers, Austin Bevers, Destiny Brown, and Paula Brown.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 pm Saturday, November 20, 2004 in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. His sons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home Friday evening From 6:00 to 8:00.

Mamie Lou Bentley
1913-2004

Athens, GA - Mamie Lou Dye Bentley, 91, of 801 Riverhill Drive died Sunday, November 14, 2004.

A native of Madison County, Mrs. Bentley was a daughter of the late Carl Jones Dye and Azzie Lee Smith Dye. Her husband, A. D. Bentley, preceded her in death. She was a homemaker, Charter Member of the Clarke County Home Demonstration Club, and Charter Member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Joyce Bentley of Jefferson; daughters and sons-in-law: Betty and George Bost of Melbourne, FL and Judy and Jerry Whidby of Urbanna, VA; sister, Lee Fowler of Athens; eight grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 17, 2004, in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Crist Camden officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to United Hospice, 700 S. Enota Street, Ste. 202, Gainesville, GA 30501 or to the Hospice of your choice.

Grace Jack Stewart Bellman
1907-2005

Athens, Ga - Grace Jack Stewart Bellman, age 97, of Cherokee Ridge passed away on March 12, 2005.

A native of Hillsborough County, Florida, Mrs. Bellman was the daughter of the late George A. and Nancy Ardelia Dowling Jack. Her husband, N.A. Bellman, preceded her in death. She was a retired supply clerk from Robins Air Force Base and a member of the Augusta Road Church of Christ in Greenville, South Carolina.

Survivors include a daughter Joy Easterling of Athens and a son and daughter in law George Thomas and Roxanne Stewart of Mobile, Alabama, beloved niece Lynn Hubona, San Diego, CA., grandchildren Terry Matthews, Kim Ramos, Sandy Moody and Debbie Stewart and seven great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2PM at Glenn Haven Memorial Park in Macon, Ga. with Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. A private family visitation will be held from 6-8 PM Monday evening at Bernstein.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank, 640 Barber Street, Athens, Ga. 30601.

Mary Echols Beacham
1906-2005

Athens - Mary Echols Beacham, 98, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Riverhill Drive, Athens. Thrice widowed, she had been married to Howard Bradley Martin of Demorest, GA, Joseph Elbert Hardman of Commerce, GA and Jack Garlington Beacham of Athens. For many years, she was a beloved nurse in Northeast Georgia and was a member of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church.

Mrs. Beacham is survived by two daughters: Mary Anne Martin Hodgson and Nancy Hardman Revnes, wife of Michael Revnes, both of Athens; by a sister, Latrelle Warren of Cornelia, GA; two brothers, Tim Echols and wife Alice of Graniteville, SC and Bascom Echols and wife Ruth of Lula, GA; five grandchildren: Joseph Revnes of Athens, Peter Hodgson of Athens, Tom Hodgson of Atlanta, Joe Hodgson of Nashville, TN and Margaret Ossa of Nanaimo, BC Canada; by their spouses, ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Beacham’s remains have been delivered to Emory University to their Body Donor Program for research, per her wishes.

A Memorial Service will be held 3 pm, Sunday May 29 at First Baptist Church in Commerce, GA.

Mary Jane Bowden
1918-2004

Athens, GA - Mary Jane Warwick Bowden, 86, of Ferncliff Drive died Wednesday, July 21, 2004.

A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Bowden was the daughter of the late Lewis Warwick, Sr. and Ruby Tolbert Warwick. Her husband, Howard Ralph Bowden, preceded her in death. She was retired from Reliance Electric and a member of Young Harris United Methodist Church.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law: Sandra and Joseph McCarthy of Athens, and Rita and Terry Saye of Lawrenceville; sons and daughters-in-law: Ralph Howard and Carol Hellums Bowden of Glennville, and Charles Gerald and Melanie Bush Bowden of Atlanta; brother, Lewis Warwick, Jr. of Atlanta; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Marsingill officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00.

Pallbearers will be Benjamin Rustin, Joshua Rustin, Jacob Rustin, Travis Phillips, Glenn Dunston, and Scott Bowden.

Eleanor Boe
1922-2005

Hull, Ga - Eleanor “Mo Bear” Boe, 82 of 335 Lake Deerfield Road passed away on March 31, 2005.

A native of Santa Monica, California, Mrs. Boe was the daughter of the late Russell and Letha Wolfe Ingram. She was preceded in death by husbands Douglas Cook Woodbury and Barron B. Boe and a son, Douglas Woodbury Boe. Mrs. Boe, affectionally known to her grand children as “MaMa Bear” was a very active volunteer at The Betty Ford Clinic, The Eisenhower Memorial Hospital, The Living Desert Hospital in California and the Courage Center in Minnesota. She was past president of the Path Finders of California, and avid golfer, bridge player, homemaker and member of the Family Worship Center in Danielsville, Ga

Survivors include sons and daughters in law Barron and Annie Boe, Hull; Thomas C. and Robin Boe, Minneapolis, MN; son John Michael Boe, St. Cloud, MN; daughter in law Monica Boe, Honolulu, HI; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday at the Family Worship Center with Pastor Tommy Cowart officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 Monday evening at Bernstein.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the Path Finders of California, 450 S. Sunrise Way, Palm Springs, CA, St Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105 and the American heart Association, 1353 Jennings Mill Road, Suite A., Bogart, Ga 30622.

1938-2005

Athens - Rachel Carolyn Borders, 66, of Atlanta Highway died Wednesday April 13, 2005.

A native of Carroll County, Mrs. Borders was the daughter of the late George and Delia Singleton Lowery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Lee Borders and stepson, Tony Borders and was a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church in Bowdon, GA.

Survivors include children, Judy McCormick of Bowdon, Sandra Hightower of Toccoa, Brian Borders of Watkinsville, Mike Borders of Mt. Zion, Jeff Borders of Carrollton, Linda Shelnutt of Newnan, Sherry Walls of Carrollton, Kathy Williams of Carrollton and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 pm Friday, April 15 at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Rev. Beth LaRocca-Pitts officiating.

Janet Claire Bond
1958-2005

Athens, GA - Janet Claire Vialpando Bond, age 46, 259 Barber Street passed away on May 19, 2005.

A native of Pueblo, CO. She was the daughter of Marcus and Mary Ellen Bensik Vialpando. She was employed at the University of Georgia in the Terry College of Business as a student advisor and was a member of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include her husband Craig Wayne Lieske of Athens and sister Kathy Prescott, Phoenix, AZ.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2PM at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. Interment will follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brad Fairchild, Jay Aaronson, Chris Herron, Joshua Jordan, Marshall Marrotte and Tony Evans.

Velma Ruth Turner Bryan
1908-2004

Athens, GA - Velma Ruth Turner Bryan, 95, of Lanier Gardens, Riverhill Drive, Athens, GA passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital following a brief illness.

A native of Moultrie, GA (Colquitt County), born on December 25, 1908, Mrs. Bryan was the only daughter of the late Jesse Lafayette and Beulah Alice Christian Turner. Her husband of forty eight years, Thomas Cortez Bryan, preceded her in death on October 8, 1980. A brother, Dr. C.O. Turner of Athens, also predeceased her. Mrs. Bryan moved to Bowman, GA, with her family at the age of eight where she graduated from Bowman High School and attended Georgia State Teachers College in Athens. She was a former teacher in Hart County Schools primarily at the Goldmine and Eagle Grove Schools, former member and pianist at Holly Springs Baptist Church, also worked at the Quality Sewn Products in Royston, and was employed by Shoney's on the Atlanta Highway for over 26 years (retiring in 2000) as cashier and hostess. She was a past member and secretary of local chapter AARP, past president of Terrace Garden Club, and a volunteer for Red Cross for a number of years. Ruth and Cortez were members of Prince Avenue Baptist Church since moving to Athens in 1972. She was a member of XYZ, the Faith Sunday School Class and had worked with the food committee for over 18 years.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law: Elizabeth 'Liz' and John Winn of Athens and Shirley and COL (Ret) Richard W. Brown of Falls Church, VA; brother, James Morris Turner of Napa, CA; grandchildren: Bryan Winn of Athens; Richard Brown, Jr. and wife Lisa of Americus; Pattie Brown Smith and husband Greg of Columbus; one great grandson, Dallas Clayton Cox of Columbus; and a very special companion of several years, Mr. Bob Ely of Lanier Gardens. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held 2PM Saturday at Prince Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Ricketts and Rev. Doug Nix officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Bowman, GA.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8PM at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Prince Avenue Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1112, Athens, GA 30603. On line tributes may be made at www.mem.com.

Robert Brese
1970-2004

Robert Baxter Brese, III, 33, of Craigie Avenue died Thursday, May 27, 2004.

A native of DeKalb County, Mr. Brese was a son of Nina Davison Brese of Athens and Robert B. Brese, Jr of Thomaston. He was employed with International Technology as a computer specialist.

Survivors in addition to his parents include brother and sister-in-law, Darryl and Jennifer Brese; niece, Avery Brese, all of Athens; grandparents: Emily and Jim Riggs of Athens and Mrs. Jean Brese of Thomaston.

Memorial Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Georgia Elks Aidmore Children’s Center, 2394 Morrison Road, Conyers, GA 30094 or to the charity of your choice.

John Holman Brown
1929-2004

Hull, GA - John Holman Brown, 74, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004.

He was born in Clarke County on December 1, 1929. Mr. Brown was the son of the late J.H. Brown and Lee Anna Tolbert Brown. He was preceded in death by his son, Byron Holman Brown; a brother, Howard Brown; and nephew, Tommy Brown. He was a graduate of Athens High School, a member of Athens Historical Society, and a member of Athens Antique Car Club for 36 years. He retired from Trussell Ford-Mazda after 32 years and was employed by T.H. Evans Enterprises for 19 years until his death. He was a member of the Athens First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Betty Sanders Brown; daughter and son-in-law, Meliss and Randy Power; grandchildren: Morgan and Josh Power; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arnold and Lizzie Sanders all of Hull; sister-in-law, Maggie Brown of Athens; niece, Shelley Thomas of Blairsville; and nephew, Lauren Brown of Atlanta.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Thomas Evans, Darrell Sheats, C.A. Lowry, Edwin Oldham, Thomas Cothran, Gerald Maddox, Johnny Simmons and Tommy Patterson. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of T.H. Evans Enterprises.

The family received friends at Bernstein Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1060 Gaines School Road, Ste B-2, Athens, GA 30605.
