Horace Herman Astin, age 97, of Monroe, died on March 8, 2015. He was born in Rutledge, Ga on March 18, 1917 to the late Berta Few and George Washington Astin. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Lizzie Irene Peters. He is survived by his son Sammy and Marsha Astin, Grandchildren; Wendy Astin and Robbie Astin. Helen Castro
Helen Therese Castro, age 83, of Campton, died on February 25, 2015. She was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania on June 25, 1931 to the late Helen Holovich Broscius and the late Ignatius Broscius. She was preceded in death by her brother, the late Dr. Ben Broscius. Surviving are: husband, Arnold Castro of Campton; daughter and son-in-law, Maria Alexander and James Wamsley of Duluth; son and daughter-in-law, Bob Castro and Lauchi Wooley of Doraville; brother, Tom Broscius of Shamokin, PA. Helen Castro practiced nursing in New York city before marrying Arnold Castro of Barranquilla, Colombia in 1960. Son, Bob and daughter, Maria were born in New York before the family moved to Miami, Florida in 1967. By 1970, Dr. Castro settled the family in Campton, Georgia to pursue employment and education opportunities in the field of microbiology. Mrs. Castro was a dedicated wife and mother who sacrificed her own career to concentrate on raising her two children and was well known in the Campton and Monroe communities. A visitation and funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2014 at Meadows Funeral Home. The visitation will be held from 12:00 pm until 2:00pm and the service will begin at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Father Daniel Toof officiating.
Rodney "Rod" Rooker
Rodney 'Rod' Rooker Rodney Harold 'Rod' Rooker, age 42, of Atlanta, died on March 2, 2015. He was born in Atlanta, GA on November 18, 1972 to Mary Yonette Sapp Rooker and Harold Gene Rooker. He is survived by his parents, Yonette and Harold Rooker of Monroe; sister, Stephanie Rooker of Dacula; nieces, Haley Mobley, Paisley Barfield, and nephew, Peyton Mobley. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. in Monroe, GA from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Conner officiating. Geneva Berry Ashe, age 73, of Monroe, died on April 21, 2015. She was born in Grayson, GA on January 6, 1942 to the late Louisa Chandler Berry and the late Leonard Eugene Berry. She is survived by her husband, Horace Ashe of Monroe; daughter, DeLane Phillips of Commerce; son, Horace Lee Ashe of Good Hope; sister, Jeanette Maddox of Dacula; brother, Gene Berry of Jasper; and grandchildren: Heather Ashe, Johnny Phillips, Rachel Phillips, and Jared Phillips. A memorial service was held on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Rev. Laura H. Davis officiating. Marvin Waters
Marvin Waters Marvin Richard Waters, age 72 of Jersey, died on April 17, 2015. He was born in Monroe on July 4, 1942 to the late James Reuben Waters and the late Ella Shackleford. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Renea and Rick Hall of Monroe, Sandy Norris of Monroe, and Marsha LaFontaine of Monroe; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Vicky Waters of Monroe; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary and Glen McDaniel of Jefferson, and Deborah Jackson of Monroe; brother and sister-in-law, Lonnie Waters, of Monroe, Rick Waters of Atlanta, Wayne and Lisa Waters of Monroe; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren with many nieces and nephews. He was a loving and caring daddy, papa, brother, uncle, and friend. Although he is no longer with us, he left us with a lifetime of memories that we will cherish forever. He met his true love, Frances Dalton, when they were just teenagers. They shared almost 49 years of marriage until God called her home in 2010. Although he had several jobs over his 72 years of his life, he seemed his happiest when he worked with his wife as caretakers of Old Salem campground on Lake Oconee. He truly seemed to love that job and working side by side with her, was his joy. During these last few years of sickness, he found great happiness spending time with those that he loved. Although the light of our lives will be dimmer without him, we find much comfort in knowing that he passed peacefully in his sleep. Funeral Services were held on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Craig Arrington officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery. Barbara Ryals Gross Barbara Ryals Gross, age 84 of Monroe, died on April 11, 2015. She was born in Glenwood on September 30, 1930 to the late Walter Ryals and the late Annie Laurie Askew Ryals. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Don Gross; her son, the late Donny Gross; sister, the late Virginia Ryals McCarriar. Surviving are: daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Harvey Richardson of St. Simons; son and daughter-in-law, Joey and Laura Gross of Monroe; grandchildren, Randy and Jenny Richardson, Robby Richardson, Kim Richardson, Amanda and Charles Green, Andrew Gross, Elizabeth and Todd Rice; and great grandchild, Michael Richardson. A graveside service was held on Monday April 13th at 3:00 P.M. at Glenwood Cemetery.

Judy Moon Ward, age 64, of Monroe, died on April 9, 2015. She was born in Walton County on February 12, 1951 to the late Hugh Dorsey Albert Moon and the late Jennie Louise Finley. Surviving are: daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Stephen Emery of Dacula; Brandi and Johnny Walker of Newborn; son, Mark Ward of Texas; sister, Shirley Moon Casey of Monroe; brothers, Thomas 'Rebbie' Moon of Jersey, Danny Moon of Loganville, Barry Moon of Monroe, Steve Moon of Pendergrass, Alan Moon of Monroe; 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. Nettie Sue Hensley, age 79, of Monroe, died on April 2, 2015. She was born in Walton County on June 18, 1935 to the late Mattie Farmer Dalton and the late Bill Dalton. She is survived by her husband, W.J. Hensley, Sr. of Monroe ; daughters and son-in-law, Louise Gordon of Madison, Deborah and Tyron Johnson of Monroe; sons and daughter-in-law, W.J. Hensley Jr. of Monroe, Joe and Leigh Ann Hensley of Monroe; sister and brother-in-law, Betty Jo and James Middlebrooks of Jersey; 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Ralph Norton, age 85, of Social Circle, died on March 31, 2015. Preceded in death by parents Will A. and Elender McGiboney Norton, daughter Gayle Jones and 10 siblings. Survived by wife Polly Norton of Social Circle; daughters: Sheila(Steve)Steinhauer of Bethlehem, Lisa (Tim)Norton of Grayson; son, David(Neysa) Norton of Jackson; son-in-law Billy Jones of Lawrenceville; grandchildren: Heather(Kevin) Boeckman, Cameron(Kelly) Jones, Brad(Eileen) Steinhauer, Trent( Cacey) Steinhauer, Holli( Jason) Greene, Andrew Norton, Chelsea Norton, and 12 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Social Circle First Baptist Church at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Shadowlawn Cemetery. Ralph Norton will be remembered for his great faith, his love for Polly and his desire to spend time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His service as a church deacon and Sunday school teacher has helped to encourage and develop countless men, women and children from Pine Lake to Social Circle, Georgia. Friends and family will forever remember and cherish the great memories of time spent fishing, golfing and dove hunting with Papa Ralph.

Dorothy "Dot" Brown, age 90, of Monroe, died on March 29, 2015. She was born in Walton County on May 11, 1924 to the late Oda McDonald Fambrough and the late William Manuel Fambrough. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late W.F. Brown; her son, the late Gary Brown. She is survived by her daughters, Wanda Brown of Monroe; Juanita Malcom of Monroe; granddaughters, Danielle Malcom of Monroe, and Lucy Carter of Monroe. Funeral services were Wednesday, April 1, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Harmony Baptist Church with Rev. Brant Calloway officiating. Interment followed at Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Carl Randall Burgess, age 66, of Monroe, passed away on July 4, 2015. He was born in Athens, GA on October 4, 1948 to the late Carl C. Burgess and Mrytle Louise Burgess. He was married
to his loving wife, Barbara, for 48 years. He was a Mason at Davidson Lodge #103 and a member of Faith Baptist Church of Monroe. Surviving family members are: wife, Barbara Ann Burgess; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Kellie Burgess; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Frank Heusser; daughter, Ashley Burgess; grandchildren, Billie and Archie Burgess, Frankie, Raegan, and Faith Heusser; sister, Millie Bradford; brother, Bruce and spouse Angie Burgess.
