Joyce Marie Handwork
Joyce Marie (Leatherberry) Handwork passed away November 14, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 69. Joyce was born on February 9, 1941 to Dean and Josephine (Courtheyn) Leatherberry and married on October 2, 1965 to Richard D. Handwork. They have two sons & four grandsons -Jeffrey (Maria; Logan) Handwork and Michael (Jessica; Joseph, Dan and Seanan) Handwork. Joyce is survived by her husband, Richard, their children and their families, her sister Gaye (James) Savory, and brothers Raymond (Cindy) and Gary Leatherberry; also her nephews (Brian, Matt, Marc and nieces Chris and Diane, Uncle Ernie (and Aunt Erla) Courtheyn, Aunt Helyn Courtheyn, Uncle Ernie Leatherberry, Aunt Esther Leatherberry and many cousins, friends and neighbors, past and present. She was predeceased by parents Dean and Josephine Leatherberry and in-laws Henry and Connie Huseman. Joyce was a member of the Augusta Christian Church in Augusta, OH and sang in the church choir for many years. She also was a member of the Augusta Fashionettes 4-H Club for many years, participating in the sewing and cooking activities. She took lessons on learning to play the accordion and played it for many years. Joyce graduated from Augusta High School, Augusta, OH as the Valedictorian in 1959. She was in the National Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, Latin Club, Junior and Senior Plays, Varsity Cheerleader, Queen of Hearts, and Homecoming Attendant. She then graduated from Malone College, Canton, OH in 1963 magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education, with a major in mathematics and minors in French and Biology, and graduated with a Masters Degree in Math Education from North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, GA. Joyce taught math classes (Algebra was her favorite) at West Branch High School in Beloit, OH, and after moving to Georgia, she taught math classes at Forsyth High School in Cummings, GA and taught math classes at Georgia Perimeter College, retiring from there in 2003. Having her grandsons over for several days at a time and sitting on the floor playing games was a favorite time. She also enjoyed having vacations with her sons and families at the beach or in the mountains. Holidays were an especially favorite time as they all spent time together. Joyce enjoyed working in her garden and planting many flowers and vegetables around her house and in creating many hanging baskets and flowerpots from plants that she rooted herself. She has many oil painting pictures that she painted that are hanging in her house and many that she has given to family and friends. Joyce was a member of the Ruby Red Darlings in Good Hope and Monroe Garden Club, and she walked with many ladies at Bethel Baptist Church. Calling hours and local services will be held at Meadows Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 17th from 6:00- 8:30 pm. Calling hours will be at Gotschall-Hutchinson Funeral Home in Minerva, OH from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Friday, Nov. 19th. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, Nov. 20th at Gotchall-Hutchinson Funeral Home with interment at Augusta cemetery in Augusta, OH. Donations in Joyce's name can be made to your favorite charity, the Augusta Christian Church, Augusta cemetery Association, or Augusta Fire Department in Augusta, OH 44607.

Ruby Bryan
Ruby Bryan Ruby Bryan, age 90 of Covington, died on November 15, 2010. She was born in Covington on December 6, 1919 to the late William Allen Hinton and the late Cora Lee Knight Hinton. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, the late Cynde Hinton, and her grandson, the late Kody Bryan. Surviving are: Sons: Ferald Bryan of DeKalb, IL and Terrell Bryan of Covington, GA; Sisters: Alline Johnson of Jersey and Donnie Conner of Monroe; Brother: Bill Hinton of Collinsville, MS; Grandsons: Caleb Bryan of Rochelle, IL and Terry Bryan of Covington. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday November 18th at 2:00 P.M. at Jersey Holiness Church with the Rev. Randall Allgood, the Rev. Lynn Head, and the Rev. Anthony Lester officiating. Interment will follow at Jersey Holiness Church Cemetery. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

James B. Greer
James B. Greer, age 80 of Monroe, died on November 10, 2010. He was born in Good Hope, GA on June 27, 1930 to the late Joseph Luther Greer and the late Pearl Towler Greer. Surviving are: Niece: Jo Ann Tanner of Monroe; Nephews: Bryan Greer of Monroe, Jacob Greer of Monroe, and Ricky Greer of Monroe. Funeral Services were held on Friday November 12th at 2:00 P.M. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymond Hardy officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Vernon Christian Church Cemetery. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Jean Hale Goddard
1936-2005
Eatonton, GA - Jean Hale Goddard, age 69, formerly of Athens, GA, died Monday, January 17th, 2005, at Eatonton Health and Rehab Center.

A native of Clarke County, Ms. Goddard was a daughter of the late M.D. and Susie Hollis Hale. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Avie Spinks and Allene Turner, and one brother, Red Hale.

Survivors include her son, Scott Goddard of Atlanta; a sister, Mae Ballew, Athens; and several nieces and nephews. At her request, private services will follow after cremation.

Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Ruark
Barbara Ruark, 82, of Monroe died on October 30, 2010. She was born on August 24, 1928 in Bradford, Arkansas to the late Lome Price and the late Charles Pearce. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late William 'Bill' L. Ruark. Surviving are sons and daughters in law: Joel Pearce and Jackie Ruark of Monroe, William L. and Kimberly Summers Ruark Jr. of Decatur; daughter: Elizabeth Ruark Pielow of Minneapolis, MN; brother: Quentin Pearce of Bradford, Arkansas; sister: Alice Jean Pearce of CA; 6 grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 5th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at Meadows Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 6th at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Box officiating. Interment will follow at Woodville Baptist Church cemetery in Woodville, GA.

LaVerne Patrick
LaVerne A. Patrick LaVerne A. Patrick, age 75 of Monroe, died on October 31, 2010. She was born in Monroe, GA on July 22, 1935 to the late Emory Isom Allen and the late Mary Lou Whitley Allen. Surviving are: Daughter and Son in Law: Terri and Bob Hastings of Loganville; Son: Michael Patrick of Decatur; Sisters: Barbara Allen Bell of Monroe and Jean Allen Tanner of Monroe; Brother and Sister in Law: James E. and Martha Allen of Monroe; Granddaughter: Hayley Elizabeth Hastings of Loganville. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday November 3rd at 11:00 A.M. at the Monroe First Baptist Church with Dr. Glen Money and Dr. Todd Ware officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org or the Monroe First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 351, Monroe, GA 30655.

Miguel Angel Flores Gonzales
2005-2005
Athens, Ga - Miguel Angel Flores Gonzales infant son of Miguel Angel Flores and Alexandra Gonzales died Thursday, April 7, 2005. Funeral services will be 11AM Monday at Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors in addition to parents are sisters Iris and Yvette Gonzales of Athens.

Royce Wayne Cassady
Royce Wayne Cassady, 67, of Monroe died on April 11, 2010. He was born on June 2, 1942 in Hacoda, AL. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Lera Gay Cassady and the late Floyd Mizell Cassady. Surviving are wife, Carol Cassady of Monroe; daughter, Teresa and Scott Webb of Lawrenceville; sister, Fran Craig of Youngstown, FL; brother, Floyd Cassady of Youngstown, FL; and 8 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 14th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. William Heard Holbrook, Jr.
William "Daddy Bill" Heard Holbrook, Jr., 71, died at home with his family Friday, January 7, 2011. Born September 26, 1939 in Monroe, Dr. Holbrook is the son of the late William Heard Holbrook and Lounelle Doster Holbrook. Valedictorian of the Monroe High School Class of '57, Dr. Holbrook graduated from the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia. From 1967 to 1969, he served in the Air Force at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. After returning to Georgia and doing his residency at Emory University Hospital, Dr. Holbrook practiced radiology for over 40 years throughout the state. He suffered his first heart attack when he was 45. Despite that, he continued to practice medicine to help others and provide for his family. A long-time resident of Athens and Elberton, Dr. Holbrook also lived and worked in Cairo. He retired and returned to Monroe last year. He entertained many with his dry wit, silly jokes and paper pirate hats and will be forever remembered for his dedication. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 32 years, Donna Wells Holbrook of Athens; 6 children: Langford Doster Holbrook (Shannon), Jonathan Andrew Holbrook (Suzanna), Abigail Susannah Holbrook (Joe); Joshua Wells Holbrook (Jessica); Jacqueline Reamanda Henson; Sallie Dana Mobley (Stan); 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters: Carol Ann Holbrook of Monroe and Mary Anderson (Mack) of Magnolia, Texas and nieces, Eve (Kevin) Tidwell and Eugenia Holbrook Anderson. Announcement of a private service for family and friends will be forthcoming. James Phillip McElhannon, 61, of Monroe died on January 3, 2011. He was born on January 28, 1949 in Monroe, Georgia to the late Jimmy McElhannon and the late DeDe Howington McElhannon. Surviving are wife: Donna M. McElhannon of Monroe; daughter: Kristen and Josh Yancey of Monroe; sons: Joey and Falesha McElhannon of Monroe, Brett McElhannon of Monroe, LCPL Taylor McElhannon of Monroe; 3 grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 4:30 pm on Friday, January 7th at Corinth Christian Church with the Rev. Don Hardison, Rev. Lester Waters officiating, with special speaker Sande Davis.

Charles L. Harris, Sr
Charles Lamar Harris, Sr. of Monroe died on December 28, 2010. He was born on May 31, 1945 in Lincolnton, NC to the late Joe Harris and the late Patricia Diane Williams Harris. He was preceded in death by his son, the late Charles 'Chas' Harris, Jr. Surviving are wife: Patricia Harris of Monroe; daughter: Hope Conner of Monroe; son: Chris Harris of Monroe; sister: Greta Payne of Canton; brothers: Frank Harris of Canton and James Harris of Canton; 4 Grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 2nd at Barrow Memorial Gardens.

John Randolph Mitchell
John Randolph Mitchell, 86 of Monroe, died on December28, 2010. He was born in Monroe, GA on July 20, 1924 to the late John C. Mitchell and the late Wilma Johnson. He was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers. Surviving are wife: Lanelle Mitchell of Monroe; daughter: Joy Mitchell McCullers of Monroe; sons: Jimmy and Sherry Mitchell of Warrenton, Gary and Sheila Mitchell of Monroe, Stevie and Tammy Mitchell of Monroe; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at Bold Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Hoyt Johnson. Interment will follow at Bold Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Ann Smith
Mary Ann Smith, 69 of Monroe, died on December 27, 2010. She was born in Monroe, GA on May 8, 1918 to the late Robert Lee Harp and the late Corrie Hood Harp. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Charles Arnold Smith. Surviving are daughters: Cathy and Keith Kelly of Monroe, Lynn and Leon Durden of Good Hope, and Janice and Jeff Langley of Monroe; sister: Berta Ruth Hartman of New Jersey; 7 grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Sorrells and the Rev. Bryan Armour officiating. Interment will follow at Hill Haven Cemetery.

David Carpenter
David Carpenter, age 52 of Social Circle, died on December 22, 2010. He was born in Clayton, GA on April 14, 1956 to Bill Carpenter and the late Ella Mae Ramey Carpenter. Surviving are: Wife: Sherry Carpenter of Social Circle; Son: William Chad Carpenter of Social Circle; Daughter and Son in Law: Cassie and Jimmy Swayze of Crawford; Father and Step-Mother: Bill and Helen Carpenter of Suches; Sisters and Brother: Jean Carpenter of NC, Diane and David Woody of Suches; Brother: Mickey Carpenter of Social Circle; Grandchildren: Cody Carpenter, Cheyenne Carpenter, and Chase Carpenter. Funeral Services were held on Monday December 27th at 2:00 P.M. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Malcom officiating. Interment followed at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. Dino DeMarzo
Leonardo Dino DeMarzo, 76, of Monroe died on December 16, 2010. He was born on March 7, 1934 in Bari, Italy to the late Nicola Demarzo and the late Anna Fortunato DeMarzo. Surviving are wife: Nancy B. DeMarzo of Monroe; daughters and son-in-law: Patricia Contento of Monroe, Pamela Lipscomb of Braselton, Debra and Del Bullock of Monroe, Maria DeMarzo of Monroe; son and daughter-in-law: Dino and Trudy DeMarzo of Monroe; sisters: Mina Fratta of Italy, CiCi Heberly of Bakersville, CA, brother: Pino DeMarzo of Italy; 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4:00 pm on Monday, December 20th at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Peavy, Rev. Ralph Brown and Rev. Fred Brown officiating.

Margaret B. Verner
Margaret B. Verner, age 94 of Monroe, died on December 12, 2010. She was born in Loganville on December 25, 1915 to the late James Fredrick Briscoe and the late Sarah Pallie Briscoe. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Jack Verner. Surviving are: Sons and Daughters in Law: Jack and Ann Verner, Sr. of Atlanta, Terry W. and Brenda Verner, Sr. of Decatur; 7 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held on Friday December 17th at 2:00 P.M. at the Monroe First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dane Wagner officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery. Mrs. Verner joined the Grayson, GA Methodist Church at the age of 9 and transferred her membership to the First Methodist Church of Monroe in 1944. She remained a member there for 66 consecutive years. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Monroe First United Methodist Church, Building Fund or Chancel Choir, 400 South Broad Street, Monroe, GA 30655. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Calvin R. Harrison, 62, of Monroe died on December 15, 2010. He was born on September 11, 1948 in Monroe, Georgia to the late Ralph Lamar Harrison and the late Myrtice Mobley Harrison. Surviving are wife: Dianne M.
