Mr. John Loss Wells
Mr. John Loss Wells of Philadelphia, Pa., entered into rest on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.
Mr. Wells was born in Glascock County on March 7, 1941, to the late Dolphus (Louise) Wells. He was educated through the Jefferson County School System, where he graduated from Jefferson County High School in 1961. He earned his bachelors degree in education from the University of Tennessee, Nashville. He was a state-certified English teacher and taught in the Davdison County School System in Nashville, Tenn. He then continued his education and was a physical therapist at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., for 42 years. He retired from many awards, merits, and notable accomplishments.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Harts Grove Baptist Church, Stapleton, with Rev. Dr. Willie L. Jones officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dolphus Wells Jr. and Lenton Wells.
Survivors include his brother, Robert Wells of Sebring, Fla.; six sisters, Marie Lewis, Mattie Mikiel and Mamie Ruth Wells, all of Philadelphia, Pa., Evella Farmer and Margaret Brown, both of Wrens, and Gertrude Hamby of Augusta; cousin, Deacon Warren G. Wells; two sisters-in-law, Fannie Wells and Dorothy Wells, both of Wrens; one aunt, Katie Mae Wells; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Brown entered into rest on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, in Columbus.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Bethel AME Church, with Rev. Mark Pierson officiating. Burial was in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery, Matthews.
Survivors include two daughters, Cleaster Pryor, Columbus, and Bobbie J. Brown; son-in-law, Bennie Brown Jr., Clinton, Md.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; niece, Mary Smith, Newark, N.J.; great-nephew, Jerome Preston Bates, New York, N.Y.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Mary Etta McMahan Culpepper
Mrs. Mary Etta McMahan Culpepper, 90, of Augusta entered into rest at her home on Feb. 17, 2010, after a long bout with illness.
A native of Cross Anchor, S.C., Mrs. Culpepper was a daughter of the late Lee A. and Emmie McCravy McMahan. She was a member of the Grovetown United Methodist Church. Most of her adult life was spent in Grovetown, where she raised a family with her late husband Leomia E. Culpepper. Mrs. Culpepper retired from civil service, having worked at Fort Gordon and the VA Hospital Forrest Hills Division. Upon retiring she continued her education at Augusta Technical College where she studied horticulture.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Grovetown United Methodist Church, with Rev. Tim Oliver officiating. Interment was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leomia E. Culpepper; her son, David E. Culpepper; and five brothers, James A. McMahan, Everette P. McMahan, Julian McMahan, Grover McMahan and Walter S. McMahan.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia C. Moore (Jerry) of Grovetown, and Janet C. Thomason (Jefferey) of Augusta; two sons, Richard E. Culpepper of Martinez, and Robert E. Culpepper (Cyndi) of Mitchell; six grandchildren, Jessica Culpepper of Washington, D.C., Jared Thomason, Nathan Thomason and Meredith Thomason, all of Augusta, and Blythe Culpepper and Brooke Culpepper, both of Mitchell; one sister, Donnie Fae Rice of Hull; numerous nieces, nephews and other family; caregivers, Edna Reddick, Susan Young and Beverley Walker; and dogs, Lady, Joy and Gracie, all of Augusta.
Pallbearers were nephews, Danny Culpepper, Joe Culpepper, Johnnie McMahan, Billy Manley, Chad Culpepper and Kyle Tompkins.

Mr. Robert Lee Hannah
Mr. Robert Lee Hannah, 55, of Wrens entered into rest on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at the University Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Hannah was born June 1, 1954, in Augusta, to the parentage of the late Eugene Hannah Sr. and the late Gladys Trimble Hannah. He worked at the Atwell Pecan Company, Wrens, until his health began to fail.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Harts Grove Baptist Church, Stapleton, with Rev. Dr. W. L. Jones as eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.
He was preceded by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy J. Stewart and Brenda Hannah; and five brothers, James Edward Hannah, Thomas L. Hannah, Willie Roy Hannah, Willie J. Hannah and Willie Gene Hannah.
Survivors include three sisters, Enay Avery of Wrens, Mae Rose Aldred and Ruby Mae Haynes, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four brothers, Johnny (Mattie) Hannah of Avera, Joe Lewis Hannah and Dennis Lee Hannah, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Freddie Gene Hannah of Valdosta, one aunt, Mary Hannah of Wrens; five stepchildren, Laverne Tucker, Carolyn Hannah, Ki`e Ki`e Avery, Patricia Vaughner and Willie Lane, all of Wrens; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Life Fellowship Ministries, Wadley, with Rev. Eric Burden officiating. Interment was in Shiloh CME Church, Davisboro.

Mrs. Louise Ramsey Joiner
Mrs. Louise Ramsey Joiner, 83, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at UPAC of North Augusta.
Born in Louisville on May 20, 1926, Mrs. Joiner spent most of her life in Augusta. She retired as a bookkeeper at Greene Street Presbyterian Church where she was also a member for many years.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment followed at Magnolia Cemetery, Waynesboro.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Curtis Richard James
Mr. Curtis Richard James, 79, of Matthews entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at The Place At Martinez Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born to the late Beulah Guy and Richard James, Mr. James was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. Having to quit school at an early age, he helped his father farm and build houses. He met his wife, Margie Holley James, when he was only 15 and was married
at age 19. He and his father built houses until his father’s untimely death in 1969 after which he partnered with Rabun Realty and later with his son, Edward. After retiring, he worked with his son, Raymond, at James Cabinets and his son, Edward, at James Funeral Home. He was a member of Mt. Horeb Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, with Rev. Billy Duggan and Dr. James M. Ford officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Horeb Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margie Holley James; three children, M. Darlene (David) James-Bass, Edward C. (Debbie) James, and Raymond K. (Miriam) James; brothers, John C. (Lois) James, Augusta, and Ricky W. (Tanya) James; a sister, Betty J. (James) Sheppard; four grandsons, Nathan C. James, Statesboro, Brandon P. (Roseann) James, Tyler E. James and Blake M. James; a step-granddaughter, Cassidy Bass, Gray; one great-grandson, Colton B. James; numerous nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.

Mrs. Leona Joyce Lloyd Kight, 74, of Keysville entered into rest on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Kight was born in Blackshear, but had made Keysville her home for 40 years and was a member of Mt. Moriah UMC.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at 4 p.m. at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church, with Rev. Chris Henry officiating. Interment followed in Keysville UMC cemetery beside her husband.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian H. Kight; parents, Leon E. and Gladys Johnson Lloyd; and stepson, Julian Allen Kight.
Survivors include her children, Lloyd “Pat” Kight, Brandon, Miss., Mike D. (Lynn) Kight, Hephzibah, Hal (Ginny) Kight, Julian “Jake” Kight and Gladys “Sue” (Aubrey) Wheeler; her stepchildren, Terri Allen, Chattanoogo, Tenn., and Libby Kight, Delta City, Miss.; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; adopted daughter, Darlene; and many friends.

Mrs. Louise Echols Jenkins Minton
Mrs. Louise Echols Jenkins Minton, formerly of Macon, entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, in Alexandria, Va.
Funeral services were held at the Wadley United Methodist Church, Wadley, on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at 2 p.m. Interment was in the Edenfield Family Section of the Wadley Cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Wayne (Carolyn) Jenkins; daughter, Judith Jenkins Seymour; grandson, Rand (Denise) Jenkins; granddaughter, Clare (Peter) Koller; and a great-grandson, Evan Jenkins.

Mr. James “Sonny” “Tom” “JT” Thompson
Mr. James “Sonny” “Tom” “J.T.” “Mr. T” Thompson entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010.
Mr. Thompson was born in Jefferson County to the late Willie James and Margaret Atkinson Thompson on June 1, 1941. He was baptized at an early age at Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church, Louisville. He later joined St. Philip Evangelist Episcopal Church in 1977, where he served until his death. He was secretary for the Men’s Club and security officer when the church had affairs. He attended school in Jefferson County. After graduating from Jefferson County High School, he joined the U.S. Army in 1960, where he served for 10 years. He was with Co.B, 19th Bn 5th Tng Regt, Fort Jackson, S.C., and Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., 7th Army B Co, 385th MP Bn, Kornwestheim, Germany, and 34th MP DET USAREUR, Aschaffenburg, Germany. After leaving the Army, he joined the Metropolitan Police Department, Washington, D.C., on Oct. 13, 1969. He was an accident investigator, traffic school instructor and desk clerk. He retired on Feb. 23, 1991, after 21 years of service. He worked for the U.S. Marshall’s Service as a district
security officer from November 1992 until May 2009. He received many certificates and medals for his work and conduct. He recently received a plaque and certificate from the U.S. Marshall’s Service for outstanding services. He married
his wife, Elaine Grant Thompson, on Dec. 22, 1967, in Aschaffenburg, Germany.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at the St. Philip Evangelist Episcopal Church, Washington D.C.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine; son, Christopher; mother-in-law, Callie M. Smith; sister, Mildred Walker, Burlington, N.J.; sister-in-law, Kay M. Grant, Plano, Texas; three brothers-in-law, Rodney F. Miss Bernice Hunley White
Miss Bernice Hunley White of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Trinity Hospital, Augusta.
Miss White was born in Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Jake and Eddie Mae White. She was reared by the late Mack and Reecie Hunley. She received her education in the Jefferson County School System. She was a member of Lofton AME Church and Spring Bethel Benevolent Society and attended the Louisville Senior Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Louisville, with Rev. Kenneth Davis officiating and Rev. Carl Simmons assisting. Interment was in the Spring Bethel Society Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by siblings, Carrie Mae Glover, Agnes Hunley, Geneva Hunley and Ronnie Hunley.
Survivors include her sisters, Hattie Ruth Hall (Gary), Patricia Hines (Willie) and Zolie Davis, all of Louisville, Carrie Gwyinn (George) of Dale City, Va., and Myra Bell (Timothy) of Wadley; brother, Albert White of Swainsboro; sister-in-law, Bernice Hunley of Louisville; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sam M. Callaway, 89, Monroe died on November 22, 2010. He was born on August 21, 1921 in Washington, Ga to the late Abner Mell Callaway and the late Kate Echols Callaway. Surviving are wife: Dixie Callaway of Monroe; children: David and Kaye Callaway of Monroe, Glenn Callaway of Clarkston, Sonny and Lynn Rader of Snellville, Larry and Linda Rader of Athens; grandchildren: Jeff and Amy Callaway, Krista and Weylin Torbush, Amanda and Jarrod Daniel, Brooke Callaway, Brittany Rader, Kendall and Leah Rader, Kyle Rader, Melissa Connealy, Monica McKim, and 11 Great Grandchildren. ACTIVITY DURING WWII SERVED IN THE PACIFIC THEATER 40 MONTHS. FOUGHT AT GUADALCANAL AND WENT TO RUSSELL ISLAND. RECEIVED THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, PHILIPPINE LIBERATION RIBBON WITH 2 SERVICE STARS, AMERICAN DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL, ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN RIBBON WITH 2 BRONZE STARS. ASSIGNED TO THE COMBAT ENGINEER BATTALION WITH THE 37TH DIVISION WHILE IN THE FIJI ISLANDS. DEPARTED SAN FRANCISCO 1942. PART OF THE CREW WENT TO FIJI ON THE SS CALVIN COOLIDGE AND PART WENT TO NEW ZEALAND FOR 90 DAYS UNTIL 1943. James Wesley Gerrett
1961-2005
Athens - James Whaley (Jimmy) Gerrett, 44, of S. Stratford Dr. passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2005.
A native of Radford, VA, Mr. Gerrett had lived most of his life here in Athens. He was a graduate of Cedar Shoals High School, and attended Gainesville Junior College and Southern Tech in Atlanta. He was employed as an automotive technician and was a member of the Athens First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents Glendon Francis and Virginia Whaley Gerrett of Athens; children Nelson Shaun Gerrett and Amanda Leigh Gerrett both of Athens and Hannah Christine Gerrett of St. Simons; sisters Janice Gerrett Perkins, Mt Joy, PA and Judith Gerrett Easters, Greenville, NC and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 3PM Monday at Evergreen Memorial Park with Dr. Bill Ross officiating. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 2-3PM Monday.

Rubye Garrison Edmondson, age 92 of Monroe, died on November 16, 2010. She was born in Cornelia, GA on April 7, 1918 to the late Aden Allen Garrison and the late Nancy Ivie Garrison. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Judge Hoke Edmondson. Surviving are: Daughters and Son in Law: Gwen and Dan Saxton of Winder, and Brenda Mobley of Monroe; 7 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday November 20th at 2:00 P.M. at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Malcom officiating. Interment will follow at Hill Haven Cemetery.

Ken Rutledge, age 56 of Monroe, died on November 15, 2010. He was born in Atlanta, GA on September 1, 1954 to Milton Lamar Rutledge and Marjorie Duffey Rutledge. Surviving are: Wife: Joann Justus Rutledge of Monroe; Son: Jonathan Rutledge of Buford; Parents: Milton Lamar and Marjorie Duffey Rutledge of McDonough; Sister and Brother in Law: Kathy and Terry Gourley of Monroe.
