Miss Mattie Jean Swint
Miss Mattie Jean Swint of Bartow entered into rest on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at a local hospital.
Miss Swint was a native of Jefferson County, born to the late Clifford Samuel Swint and Bertha Lee Carswell Swint. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant CME Church, Bartow. Miss Swint attended elementary school at Bartow Colored School and completed her high school education at Carver High School in 1955. She later attended Paine College and received her CNA license from Swainsboro Tech. She worked as a teacher’s aide in the Jefferson County School System before accepting a job at Glendale Nursing Home, Wadley, in 1972 and spending over 37 years in nursing.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 15, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant CME Church and Cemetery.
Survivors include two sisters, Catherine Swint and Marie Jean Swint, both of Bartow; two brothers, Clifford (Elaine) Swint of College Park, and Carswell (Edna) Swint of Louisville; three stepsisters, Paulette (Raymon) Gore, Lenoir City, Tenn., Patricia (Mark) Merritt of Pooler, and Peggy (Cedrick) Adams of Stone Mountain; one stepbrother, Michael (Sarah) Swint of Conley; nephews and niece, Ralph Emory (Melody) Walton of Lawrenceville, Keith (Vicki) Swint of Jonesboro, Christopher Swint of College Park, and Candace (Hollis) Bethea of Atlanta; great-niece and -nephews, Ralph Emory Walton III, Byron D. Walton, Shayla Swint, Jalen Swint and Riley Jolee Bethea; and a host of cousins and friends

Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” S. Whitaker
Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” S. Whitaker, 80, of Dearing entered into rest on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Whitaker was born in Jefferson County and was a member of Fort Creek Baptist Church. She owned and operated several businesses in and around the Wrens area.
Funeral services were held at Fort Creek Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Phil Bray and Rev. Todd Upchurch officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Macon E. Whitaker; and parents, Martin Andrew and Jessie Phillips Stapleton.
Survivors include three children, Harold E. (Sandra) Whitaker, Glenn S. (Teresa) Whitaker, and Deborah (Wayne) McCorkle; brother, James L. Stapleton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a long time companion, Ray Clark; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Lance Irby, Hugh Hobbs, Kenan Reese, Travis Whitaker, Randy Walden and Lynn Jerry Reeves Sr.

Mr. Roosevelt Young of Wadley entered into rest on Friday, March 5, 2010, in Augusta.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 12, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Wadley Church of God in Christ in Wadley, with Elder William Renfroe Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Purvis Grove Cemetery, Bartow.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Young of Fort Drum, N.Y.; a daughter, Kimberly Fils of Hinesville; two stepdaughters, Mesha Tyree of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jammie Parker of Fort Drum, N.Y.; two sisters, Sarah (Charles) Ivory of Moreland Hills, Ohio, and Frances (Charles) Johnson, Wadley; four brothers, John (Betty) Young, Wilmington, Del., Mathis (Dorothy) Young of Wadley, James (Gloria) Young Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and William (Dessa) Young of Jacksonville, Fla.; one grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. John A. “Sarge” Cholar
Mr. John A. “Sarge” Cholar, 80, of Wrens entered into rest Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at the Uptown Division of the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta.
Born in Fords, N.J., Mr. Cholar joined the Army and retired after 27 years of service as SFC CID at Fort Gordon. After retirement from the Army, he then worked in law enforcement in Jefferson County. He was a member of the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Louisville, as well as a member of the Wrens Optimist Club, VFW, DAV and American Legion, where he was initiated into the 40/8.
Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at 3 p.m., with Father Patrick Otor, Sheriff Gary Hutchins and Chaplain Willis Everett officiating. Interment with full military honors followed at the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his children’s mother, Alberta E. Cholar; his parents; two brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Connie S. Cholar; five children, Julia Ann Russell, Oklahoma, Nancy Rabun, North Carolina, John A. Cholar Jr., Harlem, Carol McGahee and Marie Boswell, both of Greensboro; three stepchildren, Stacy Mock, Steve Henderson and Scott Henderson, all of Virginia; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; friends, Bill and Louise “Mickey” Head, Blythe, Dave and Margaret McKinney, Camak, and Jon and Laura Hills, Wrens; and numerous other friends and relatives.
Honorary pallbearers were all law enforcement officers in Jefferson County.

Mrs. Gladys L. Greer
Mrs. Gladys L. Greer, 88, formerly of Louisville entered into rest on Oct. 4, 2009, in Fort Collins, Co., after a battle with cancer.
Mrs. Greer lived with her daughter Cheryl (John) Manthei. She was born in Huntington Beach, Calif., the daughter of Ray H. Overacker and Irma Bradley Overacker. After graduating from Huntington Beach High School, she went on to college, then settled down to be a wife and full-time mother for numerous years.
The graveside service and memorial service were held in Windsor, Co., with Lane Keister and Matthew Judd presiding.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ray and Clifford Overacker; son, James Stowe; grandchildren, Steve Manthei, David Stowe, Jonathan Stowe, Ginny Stowe; great-granddaughter, Abigail Nelson; and great-grandson, Immanuel Keister.

Mrs. Ola Mae Jackson
Ms. Ola Mae Jackson, 70, formerly of Bartow entered into rest on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Heritage Healthcare of Swainsboro.
Ms. Jackson was a native of Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Graddy and Pearlean Daniels Jackson. She was a member of the Blount Chapel AME Church, where she served as a Stewardess. She was a homemaker.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Faith Memorial CME Church, with Rev. Johnny Jackson officiating. Burial was in the Blount Chapel AME Church Cemetery.
Survivors include her children, Brenda Davis of Wadley, and Sherry (Marcus) Andrews of Hagan; siblings, Gerlean Brown of Wadley, Pearlean (Hessie) Gardner, Ruby Jackson and Willie Lewis (Janice) Jackson, all of Bartow; one grandson, Tyrone Strickland of Sarasota, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Betty Jean Bennefield Nickerson
Mrs. Betty Jean Bennefield Nickerson of Augusta entered into rest on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at Trinity Hospital.
Mrs. Nickerson was a 1964 graduate of Boggs Academy, Keysville, and later received a certificate in cosmetology from a local beauty school. She worked several years as an insurance agent for Guarantee Life Insurance Company and in 2003, retired from St. Joseph Hospital where she was a food service supervisor with over 30 years of service. Betty Jean was a life-long member of Christ Presbyterian Church, USA.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Belle Terrace Presbyterian Church-USA, with Rev. Adline Middleton as eulogist and Rev. Clarence Grier Sr. presiding. Interment was in Mt. Olive Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her husband, John W. Nickerson Jr.; one son, John W. Nickerson III; one daughter, Nicole (Dedrick) Gantt; one grandson, Jalen E. Gantt; one granddaughter, Angel Gantt; one sister, Melrose Bennefield; three brothers, Fredrick (Ruth) Bennefield, Robert (Geraldine) Bennefield and Theodore (Benda) Bennefield; one cousin, Freddie L. Mrs. Cornelia P. Oatman
Mrs. Cornelia P. Oatman, 93, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at Trinity Hospital of Augusta.
Mrs. Oatman was born March 24, 1916, in Washington. She was a member of Thompson Springhill African Methodist Episcopal Church. She attended regularly until her health began to fail. She served on the Usher Board, the Stewardess Board and the Women Missionary Society.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Thompson Springhill AME Church, Matthews, with Pastor Rev. Timothy Lewis presiding and Rev. Charlie Myrick as eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Oatman.
Survivors include a niece and caregiver, Shirley Davis, Augusta; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Chester and Carrie Oatman, both of Augusta; brother-in-law, Lenton Oatman, Augusta; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Catherine Pate of Wadley entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Speciality Select Hospital in Augusta.
Mrs. Pate was born in Waynesboro, but had lived in Wadley since 1995. She worked at Taylors Drug Store in Waynesboro for many years. She was a secretary and was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Deloach Funeral Home in Waynesboro, with Rev. Rusty Manning officiating. Interment followed in Magnolia Park cemetery in Waynesboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Sallie Sikes; a brother, Junior Sikes; and three sisters, Dorothy Vickery, Geneva Robinson and Sandra Sikes.
Survivors include her husband, Russell E. Pate Jr. of Wadley; daughter, Danette Highsmith of Waynesboro; son, Russell E. “Rusty” Pate III of Sardis; three grandchildren, John Daniel Highsmith, Emily Pate and Russ Pate; four brothers, Billy Sikes of Waynesboro, John Mack Sikes of Augusta, Donnie Sikes of Waynesboro, and David Sikes of Madison, Ala.; and sister, Dianne Nunnaly, of Waynesboro.

Mr. Jeremy Michael Grant, 18, of Stapleton entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital in Louisville.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at the Cross Community Church in Louisville.
Mr. Grant was an active member of Cross Community Church. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson Academy and was attending college at Georgia Southern.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kristopher Hanko.
Survivors include his parents, Gayle E. Grant of Stapleton, and Steven. M. Grant of Glen Mills, Pa.; two sisters, Samantha Grant and Karlene Hanko.

Mr. Randy Lee “Too Tall” Teuton, 53, of Jackson, S.C., entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009.

Mr. Teuton was a native of Augusta and resided in Beech Island, S.C. He worked as an electrician for 30 years. He was of Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Gregory Alan Teuton; and niece, Jennifer Marie Teuton.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Florence and Lindy Chalker Sr. of Evans; daughter, Candace Tilley of Savannah; grandson, Dalton Tilley of Savannah; brothers, Michael E.
