Mr. Stanley William Baker Jr.
Mr. Stanley William Baker Jr., 68, of Matthews entered into rest Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Baker was a retired electrician and served as a Marine in the Vietnam War.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at 3 p.m., with Bill Arrington officiating. Burial followed on Monday, June 29, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara A. Baker; and his parents, Stanley Baker and Mildred East.

Survivors include his children, Jeff, Michelle and Kim; brother, Jerry (Annie) Baker Sr.; sisters, Teri, Pattie, Lori and April; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jerry Baker Sr., Jerry Baker Jr., David Baker, Jeff Baker, Emory Arrington and Oliver McDaniel.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nathaniel Brown
Mr. Nathaniel Brown of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Brown was born on Nov. 24, 1943, in Jefferson County to the late Willie James and Alflettia Peeples Brown. He received his education in the Jefferson County School System.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church, Avera, with Pastor Perry Daniels and Pastor Cornelius Brooks eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Quawn K. Brown of California; three sisters, Annie Maude Davis, Mary Alice Wicker and Dorothy Mae (Billy) Wicker, all of Stapleton; two stepsisters, Rosetta Habersham of Virginia and Mary Alice Andrews of Augusta; one brother, Minister George (Dorothy) Tucker; friend, Margot M. Owens; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bruce Bryant
Mr. Bruce Bryant of Philadelphia, Pa., entered into rest on Monday, June 15, 2009.

Mr. Bryant was a native of Jefferson County and attended Jefferson County School System.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at noon at Davis Funeral Home Chapel, Louisville, with Rev. Willie Tomlin officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Terry Bryant of Philadelphia, Pa.; mother, Mary Corley of Jacksonville, Fla.; children, Bruce, Brandon, Brenda, Karis and Tanyika Bryant, Tina Montague and Porsche all of Pennsylvania; sisters, Lavern (Kinsey) Worthen Burroughs, Debra (Marvin) Young and Ann (Eddie) Watson, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers, Wilbert, Melvin and Sam Worthen and Tony Corley, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; aunts, Lizzie Hicks of Bartow, Annie Daniel of Jacksonville, Fla., and Willie Price of Pennsylvania; uncle, Rufus Price of Pennsylvania; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Joe Allen Gunn
Mr. Joe Allen Gunn, 55, of Dallas entered into rest on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

Mr. Gunn was born June 15, 1954, in Jefferson County, son of the late Tressie Mae Cain and Louie F. Gunn Sr. Mr. Gunn was department chair of applied technology instructor for Chattahoochee Technical Institute. He was a member of the Methodist faith.

Funeral services for Mr. Gunn were held Friday, June 26, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Marietta, with Dr. Matthews officiating. A graveside service followed in the Keysville United Methodist Church cemetery in Keysville on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 4 p.m.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Rebecca “Becky” Gunn; one son, Casey Joe Gunn; one daughter, Heather Joann Gunn Pearson of Augusta; three brothers, Louie F. Gunn Jr. of Augusta, James O. Gunn of Evans, and Delma Gunn of Keysville; six sisters, Mary Gunn Ward of Martinez, Elaine Gunn Richardson of North Augusta, S.C., Lois Gunn Hall of Keysville, Doris Gunn Ermakovich of Augusta, Audrey Gunn Harker of Horsham, Pa., and Judy Gunn Kent of Keysville; one grandson, Jarrett Pearson of Augusta; many nieces, nephews and many friends.

Donations may be made to the American Motorcycle Association, 1-800- 262-5646.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Scott Chapel Baptist Church, Pringle, with Rev. Bernard Young officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Willie “Big Boy” Edward Lane
Mr. Willie “Big Boy” Edward Lane, 54, of Wrens entered into rest on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the Jefferson County Hospital, Louisville.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Stone Springfield AME Church, with Pastor Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr. eulogist and Rev. Timothy Lewis Sr. presiding. Interment was held in the Lofton AME Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Bell Lane, Wrens; two sons, Derrick Montel Lane and Lucas Lorenzo Lane, both of Wrens; two daughters, Shamika Mechelle Lane and Shamonica Yvette Lane, both of Wrens; parents, Dwellie (Lola) Lane, Louisville; three brothers, Marvin (Dora) Lane, San Antonio, Texas, Terry (Angela) Lane, Wrens, and Jerry “Night Train” Lane, Louisville; three sisters, Jerdine (Willie) Hannah, Wrens, Lora (Wayne) Davis, Louisville, and Angela Lane, Augusta; sister-in-law, Jacqueline (Marvin) Huff; brothers-in-law, Curtis (Stacey) Bell, Willie(Tammy) Bell and James Bell, all of Wrens, and Odell (Evelyn) Augusta, Md.; two godsisters, Diane Dorsey and Glenda Upton, both of Wrens; 10 grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Mary Louise Logue Lord
Mrs. Mary Louise Logue Lord, 82, of Macon entered into rest on Saturday, June 20, 2009, in the Heartland Hospice in Macon.

Mrs. Lord was a native of Johnson County, the daughter of the late Hughy Logue and the late Estella Hall Logue. She was the wife of the late Martin Talmadge Lord Jr. Mrs. Lord was a homemaker and had retired from KMart. She was a member of the Glenwood Methodist Church.

Graveside funeral services were held at ll a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in the Macon Memorial Park cemetery in Macon, with Rev. Roy Smith officiating.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Shebia Lord Hough.

Survivors include her children, Terry (Nona) Lord of Mitchell, Teresa Lord Ownby of Summerville, Beverly (David) Ray of Key West, Fla., Terryle (Andy Orr) Lord Cullens of Sandersville, and Cheryl (Ron) Lord Trobaugh of Macon; a sister, Ruby Logue Deal of Cleveland; nine grandchildren, Jamie (Jamie) Hough, Shannon (Robin) Hough, Marty Cullens, Dee Cullens, Haleigh Orr, Nikki (Nick) Trobaugh, Macey Trobaugh, Michael (Tricia) Padgett and Chasity Brantley; and eight great-grandchildren, Cody Cullens, Madison Lindsey, Jake Hough, Michael Hough, Kara Hough, Anna Padgett, Alley Padgett and Briar Brantley; a niece, Glenda Cullens; and several other nieces and nephews.

CW3 Robert E. Mahoney
CW3 Robert E. Mahoney, USAR (Ret.), 72, of Avera entered into rest on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville.

Mr. Mahoney served during the Vietnam War and received many service awards, medals and commendations. He was a member of AMBUCS, DAV, American Legion and Hephzibah Masonic Lodge # 412.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, June 26, 2009, at 4:30 p.m., with Rev. David Davis officiating. Interment with full military honors followed at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Barnard and Irene Barbara Carroll Mahoney; and his brother, Charles Frances Mahoney.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary W. Mahoney; daughter, Barbara Coreine Claxton, Grovetown; sister, Patricia M. Briscoe, Vacaville, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Sandra (Richard) Jones, Clifton, Va.

Pallbearers were Tommy Sheppard, Bernard Pittman, Warren Mathis, Jason Mathis, Gary Kitchens and Anthony Clark of the Avera Volunteer Fire Department.

In lieu of flowers, make memorial donations to the Avera Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 125, Avera, GA 30803.

Mrs. Sara L. Neely
Mrs. Sara L. Neely, 72, of Martinez entered into rest on Thursday, June 25, 2009,

Mrs. Neely was a native of Avera, had resided in Augusta and Martinez since 1957. She was a homemaker and member of Martinez Baptist Church.

Graveside services were held on Monday, June 29, 2009, at 10 a.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Rev. Grover Lee officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Charles E. “Chuck” Neely; daughters, Joyce May Loyal (Ranny) of Augusta, and Jayne May Norman (Perry) of Martinez; stepdaughter, Marie Speers of Arizona; brothers, David LaFavor of Augusta, Bob LaFavor of Conyers, and Gene LaFavor of Rockmart; grandchildren, April Grealish and Heather Wilkins; and four great-grandchildren, Emily, Megan, Bryson and Cole.

Memorials may be made to Odyssey Healthcare, 2508 Professional Circle, Augusta, GA 30906.

Mrs. Evelyn Usry Thigpen
Mrs. Evelyn Usry Thigpen, 79, of Mitchell entered into rest on Monday, June 22, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville.

Mrs. Thigpen was a homemaker, a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a native of Glascock County. She was the wife of the late Leroy Thigpen.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Fellowship Baptist Church, with Rev. Jacky Downs officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Cantrell of Mitchell, Faye (Jim) Fries of Hephzibah, and Teresa (Jim) Smith of Phenix City, Ala.; two sons, Dwight Thigpen of Thomson, and Tony (Leslie) Thigpen of Mitchell; three sisters, Deanie Swint of Gibson, Katie Swint of Gibson, and Emma Davis of Augusta; seven grandchildren, Buddy (Ann) Cantrell, Jonathan Cantrell, Jimmy (Amie) Fries, Wade Thigpen, Sara Thigpen, Hannah Thigpen, Maggie Thigpen; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Buddy Cantrell, Jimmy Fries, Wade Thigpen, Brad Usry, Clay Walden and Tim Shelton.

Honorary pallbearers were Buddy and Rita Story, Ralph and Hazel Kelley, and Terrell and Helen Williford.

Memorials may be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church cemetery Fund in care of Mrs. Wilma Mathis, 1033 Hwy 102 West, Gibson, Ga. 30810.

Mr. Ralph L. “Bo” Veal Sr.
Mr. Ralph L. “Bo” Veal Sr., 90, entered into rest on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Veal was born on Dec. 14, 1918, and is a native of Johnson County. He was the son of the late R.L. “Bob” and Lillie Waller Veal. He served in the United States Army during WWII. He participated in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon Emeritus. He was a retired farmer.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Grady Mimbs officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim Veal; and two sisters, Ruth Moorman and Blanche Powell.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Graham Meeks Veal of Wrightsville; two sons, Ralph Veal Jr. of Wrightsville, and Robert (Cheryl) Veal of Wrightsville; a stepdaughter, Ann (Kenneth) Bush of Wrightsville; two brothers, Harry (Carlene) Veal of Louisville, and Tobie (Inez) Veal of Wrightsville; five sisters, Kate Ivey of Wrightsville, Emmie Bray of Wrightsville, Hazel (Jack) Kyzer of Hepzibah, Ruby Holland of Brewton, and Eloise (Bonnie) Ogburn, of Swainsboro; two grandchildren, Deana Veal and Rob Veal, both of Wrightsville; one step-grandson, Ken (Peggy) Bush of Buford; and one step-great-grandchild, Lila Bush.

Pallbearers were Alex Bassett, Doug Killingsworth, Hugh Veal, Chester Veal, Allen Kyzer and Hilton Holton.

Honorary Pallbearers were the Davis-Raley Sunday School Class, Tasha Palmer, Lynn Thompson, Jerry Owensby and Chris Harvey.

Mrs. Mildred Kelley Black
Mrs. Mildred Kelley Black, 78, of Gibson entered into rest on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Mrs. Black was a native of Jefferson County who lived in Glascock County most of her life. She was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2009, at Jordan Chapel Church of God, Edgehill, with Rev. Elizabeth Williford and Rev. David Jones officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Robert N. Black; three daughters, Joann (Larry) Kitchens of Gibson, Charlene Hadden of Dearing, and Linda (James) Buffington of Thomson; five sons, Melvin Black of Gibson, Noah (Elaine) Black of Thomson, Vance (Shirley) Black of Cheyenne, Wyo., Jessie (Genivieve) Black of Gibson, and Ronnie (Lisa) Black of Gibson; 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Mr. Robert Luke Burke
Mr. Robert Luke Burke, 84, of Millen entered into rest on Sunday, July 5, 2009.

He was born in Jenkins County, retired from Keller Industries and a member of the Deep Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home, with Rev. Butch Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the Burke Memorial Garden in Waynesboro.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Gregory Burke of Millen; a son, Lester Burke of Louisville; five daughters, Rebie McMillan and Vickie Flakes, both of Millen, Nancy Mixon of Sylvania, Susan Malphus of Guyton, and Sandra Lindow of New York; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were nephews and grandsons.

Crowe-Fields Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
