Mrs. Mildred Irby Phillips
Mrs. Mildred Irby Phillips, 79, of Gibson entered into rest on Monday, April 20, 2009, at the Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center, Gibson.
Mrs. Phillips was a machine operator and a member of Magnolia Baptist Church for many years.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Magnolia Baptist Church, with Rev. Alex Williams and Tommy Harwell officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Phillips; son, Ricky Phillips; brother, Calvin Evens Irby; and three sisters, Ida Mae Usry, Marlene Chalker and Glendy North.
Survivors include a daughter, Gwyn (Dean) Couch of Gibson; one son, Mark (Donna) Phillips of Gibson; two sisters, Jenine Walden of Avera, and Ethel Davis of Thomson; five grandchildren, Ricky Ray Phillips, Wendy Hobbs, Eric Couch, Alicia Usry and Brandon Phillips; two great-grandchildren, Kelley Grace Hobbs and Shelby Rae Phillips; a daughter-in-law, Lee U. Phillips.
Pallbearers were Warren Heart, Richard Walden, Keith Walden, Greg Walden, Alen Gilmer and Warren Pittman.

Mrs. Fannie Warren Stanley
Mrs. Fannie Warren Stanley, 87, of Louisville entered into rest on Sunday, April 27, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital.
A native of Jefferson County, Mrs. Stanley was born Aug. 3, 1921, a daughter of the late Paul L. and Carrie Clark Warren. She retired from the Jefferson County Tax Commissioner’s Office and was a member of Louisville First Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at the Louisville City Cemetery, with Mr. Bill Smith officiating.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Doris Warren Stanley and Carolyn Warren Mays; niece, Lynn Wallom; and husband, Raymond Lewis Stanley.
Survivors include nieces, Gloria (Tommy) New, Carrie (Donald) Maddox, and Paula (Charles) Atchison; and nephews, John (Kim) Stanley, Floyd (Martha) Mays III, Gordon (Carol) Mays and William Wallom.
Pallbearers were nephews; and friend, Eddie Williams.

Mrs. Hazel Lois Ward Story
Mrs. Hazel Lois Ward Story of Waynesboro entered into rest on Nov. 26, 2008.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Magnolia cemetery in Waynesboro, with Pastor Jim Knight officiating. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro.
Mrs. Story had recently moved to Colorado to be near her son and daughter-in-law. She was born in Girard in Burke County to Hugh Lamar Ward and Nina Royal Ward. She was married
to Samuel Gaines Story of Waynesboro on Dec. 26, 1935. She retired from The Augusta Judicial Circuit Court in 1989, where she had worked for 21 years as a court reporter. She was a Saint Joseph Hospital volunteer and a member of the Augusta Opera Guild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Gaines Story.
Survivors include her children, Harriet Ann Story of Mineral Point, Wis. and Paul Gresham Story, M.D. (Mary Nell) of Montrose, Colo.; a sister, Evelyn Ward Gay (Brit, M.D.) of Decatur; and sister-in-law, Emily (Andrew) Pennington of Matthews; stepson, William F. Story (Carol) of Sedona, Ariz.; stepdaughter-in-law, Marjorie (Ben) Story of Waynesboro; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mr. John W. Amerson, 63, of Wrens entered into rest on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Burke Medical Center, Waynesboro.
He was born on Oct. 25, 1945, in Burke County, to the late John Willie Amerson Sr. and Rosa Lee Windom Amerson. He was employed by Elberton Granite and Marble as a granite stone maker. He was a member of Wrens Nazarene Church.
Funeral Services were held at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of DeLoach Funeral Home, Waynesboro, on Friday, May 1, 2009. Burial followed at Keysville Methodist Cemetery, Keysville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Pate; and his brother, Ernest Amerson.
Survivors include his daughter, Arlene Zipperer; brothers, Clarence Atkinson and Johnny Atkinson; sisters, Bessie Atkinson and Lucille Stewart; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers were John Atkinson Jr., Jimmy Stewart Jr., James Atkinson, Glenn Atkinson, Jimmy Duke and Lewis Smith.

Mrs. Margaret Palmer Bynes, 71, of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, May 1, 2009, at a local hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Canaan Galilee Baptist Church and Lone Star Cemetery.
Mrs. Bynes was a native of Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Jim and Mary Huntley Palmer. At an early age she joined the Canaan Galilee Baptist Church and received her early education in Jefferson County School System. She later moved to New York until her retirement and moved to Florida with her husband, Cleveland Bynes. She then returned to Jefferson County.
Survivors include her sisters, Daisy Alice Palmer of Augusta, Mildred Smith of New York, N.Y., and Marion (Aubrey) Miller of West Haverstraw, N.Y.; friend, Sara Evans of New York; brother-in-law, George Robinson of Louisville; aunts, Rosetta Brown of Stapleton, Frances Gilmore of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Delma Palmer of Tampa, Fla.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Mr. William Flay Dye
Mr. William Flay Dye, 73, of Louisville entered into rest on Monday, April 27, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 10, 1936, to Edmond and Carrie Dye of Warrenton. He worked at Lewis Steel Works and at Wadley Recycle Place. He was a resident of Wadley, then moved into Old Capital Inn Convalescent Home in July 2007.
Memorial services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, May 1, 2009, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Stan Littleton officiating.
Survivors include children, Rhonda Dye, Faye Ann Callaway, Carl Lee Dye and Douglas Dye; thee brothers, David Dye, Edmond Dye Jr. and Roy Dye; two sisters, Roberta Bradley and Jeanette Downs; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robert Eugene “Gene” Luke
Mr. Robert Eugene “Gene” Luke, of Thomson entered into rest on Monday, April 27, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Luke was a native of McDuffie County. He was a retired equipment operator for Thiele-Kaolin Company. He was a Navy veteran. He was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was a Deacon and a past chairman of the Deacons.
Graveside services were at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, in the Westview Cemetery, with Rev. Steve Stokes and Rev. Butch Baston officiating.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Carrie Luke; two brothers, Wyman McDonald and Woodrow McDonald; and his sister, Ollie Mae Harley.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia P. Luke, Thomson; two daughters, Elane Luke Lewis (Walker Jr.) Avera, and Ellen Luke Stapleton (George) Stapleton; his son, Ricky Luke (Debby), Thomson; five grandchildren, Pete Stapleton, Greg Hartzog, Natalie Stapleton, Tyler Luke and Luke Stapleton; and a great-grandchild, Cheyanne Luke.

Deacon Willie Lee Ponder Sr.
Deacon Willie Lee Ponder Sr. entered into rest recently.
Deacon Ponder was born in Jefferson County to the parentage of the late Robert “Rob” Sr. and Annie Laura Ponder on Sept. 18, 1940. He obtained his education in the Jefferson County School System. At an early age he joined Canaan Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an ordained Deacon, on the Missionary Broad, and a member of the male chorus. He gained employment with the Thermo King Corporation of Louisville, where he retired after 37 years of service. After retirement he continued to work as a self-employed plumber.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Canaan Galilee Baptist Church and Lone Star Cemetery.

A native of Blythe, Mrs. Snider was a daughter of the late Frank and Lizzie Blackston Newman, and retired from Thermo King.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2009, in Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Montgomery and Rev. Walter Holmes officiating. Burial followed in the family plot in Louisville City Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, James E. Snider.
Survivors include her sons, Jimmy W. Snider (Sheryl) of Savannah, and F. Mrs. Pauline Truelove, 79, of Gibson entered into rest on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at her residence.
A native of Richmond County, she was a homemaker.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Dublin Memorial Gardens, Dublin, with Rev. Steve Lamb officiating.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ohlen Louis and Ellie Missouri Holly Miller.
Survivors include four daughters, Kathy Coleman of Gibson, Diane Elizabeth Fields of Norcross, Judy Garrett of Thomaston, and Ellie Ruth Knight of Florence, S.C.; two sons, Charles Earl Garento of Sylvester and Wendell Rex Garento of Cypress, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
