Mrs. Cornelia Heath
Mrs. Cornelia Heath, 101, entered into rest on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Holston Manor Nursing Home in Kingsport, Tenn.

A native of Rome, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Samuel Byrd Ledbetter and Mrs. Emma Napier Ledbetter. Mrs. Heath graduated from Columbia University in New York City and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. She was a retired teacher. She was a member of First Presbyterian of Elizabethton, Tenn., and was involved in its activities. Mrs. Heath served as a hospital volunteer for 20 years until age 98.

Funeral services were at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home. The graveside service and interment was conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, in the Happy Valley Memorial Park.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W.E. Heath Sr.; two sons, William Heath Jr. and John Heath; and three sisters, Elizabeth Brannan, Caroline Herbig and Katherine Doyle Pettit.

Survivors include her daughter, Roslyn LaDuke (Rev. Kenneth); two daughters-in-law, Diana Heath and Beverly Heath; one brother, Samuel Ledbetter; and six grandchildren, William Heath III (Sharon), Susan Eaker (Jim), Michael Morris (Ginnie), Jon Morris, Andy Heath and Ryan Heath; 14 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

For those who desire, memorials may be made in lieu-of-flowers to the First Presbyterian Church, 119 West F Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643.

Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Frances Thompson Huff
Mrs. Frances Thompson Huff, 68, of Gibson entered into rest on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at her residence.

Mrs. Huff was a member of Gibson Church of God. Mrs. Huff was retired of 35 years at Air Balance.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Steve Lamb officiating. Burial followed at Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Shelton Huff; and her parents, Eddie Lee Thompson and Eva Kitchens Thompson.

Survivors include her children, Shelton (Kathy) Huff Jr., Stapleton, Michael Huff Sr., Stapleton, Donna (Chris) Hooks, Warrenville, S.C., Andy (Betty) Huff, Stapleton, Sheila (Wayne) Scarber, Gibson, and Tammy (Wells) McCorkle, Matthews; two sisters, Ann (Hiram) Milburn, Stapleton, and June (Durham) Milburn, Edgehill; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Mason McCorkle, Kevin Kitchens, Jason Milburn, Billy Huff, David Owens, Michael Pruitt and George Arrington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society 2607 Commons Blvd. Augusta Ga. 30909.

Mr. Dwight A. Huggins Sr.
Mr. Dwight A. Huggins Sr., of Augusta entered into rest Friday, Dec. 26, 2008.

Mr. Huggins, a native of Estill, S.C., was employed at West Fraser Augusta Lumber Mill and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Bobby Hankerson officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive Memorial Garden.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Huggins; two daughters, Shanice Huggins, Wrens, and Chasity Wright, North Augusta, S.C.; three sons, Dwight A. Huggins, Jr., Bartow, Eric McCullough, New Ellenton, S.C., and Courtney Wright, Augusta; mother, Laura Huggins, Estill, S.C.; one sister, Elizabeth Huggins, Augusta; one brother, Everett Huggins, Estill, S.C.; six step-grandchildren and other relatives.

Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mildred Flanagan Underwood
Mrs. Mildred Flanagan Underwood, 87, of Mitchell entered into rest on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at the Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center, Gibson.

Mrs. Underwood was a native of Telfair County and a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Mr. Florence A. Underwood of Mitchell.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, Mitchell, with Rev. Scott Googe and Dr. James King officiating. Interment was in the Mitchell Baptist Church Cemetery, Mitchell.

Survivors include her two sons, Thomas (Wylene) Underwood of Carrollton, and George Allen (Gail) Underwood of Mitchell; two brothers, Dudley (Frances) Flanagan of Barnesville, and Eschol (Linda) Flanagan of Macon; one sister, Beryl Flanagan of Macon; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Sterling Raley, Johnny Flanagan, James Flanagan, Barry Johnson, Bradley Pickelsimer and Stevie Wood.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Friendship Baptist Church.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Morris Walker
Funeral services for Mr. Morris Walker, 55, of Thomson were held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Aldred CME Church, Warren County, with the Rev. Dr. Willie J. Wiley, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the churchyard cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah “Duke” Walker; two daughters, Sonja Walker and Naquiata Walker; five stepchildren, Melvin Wilson, Mary Ann Wilson, Sheila Wilson, Stanford Wilson and Priscilla Mathis-Carey; mother, Eunice Walker; five sisters, Eloise Davis, Louise Walker, Laverne Heggs, Mattie Walker and Christine (Jerry) Dennis; two brothers, Johnny (Montress) Walker and Pressley (Mary Ann) Walker; 22 grandchildren; and a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. George T. Williams
Mr. George T. Williams, 71, of Augusta entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Mr. Williams was a native of Glascock county and son of the late Thomas H. and Hattie Lamb Williams. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was an automotive technician. He was a member of Augusta Primitive Baptist Church and the Disabled American Veterans.

Funeral services were held at the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Greg Bentley and Rev. Jared DeLoach officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Ann Dixon Williams; daughters, Tamera W. DeLoach, North Augusta, Melody W. (Chip) Blease, North Augusta, and Jayne W. (Paul) Andrews, Martinez; sisters, Christine Selby, Ada, Okla., and Geraldine Chalker, Augusta; brother, James E. Williams, Thomson; sister-in-law, Edith Poteet, Augusta; grandchildren, Jared and Brett DeLoach, Krystle Blease, and Bryan, Seth, and Paige Andrews; great-grandchildren, Charlie and Daphne DeLoach; and niece, Carolyn Morris, Loganville; and several other nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were George Zachmann, Floyd Bessinger, Brian Peck, Grady Thompson, Bill Elliott, and Joseph Williams, Sr.

Mrs. Martha Jane Gunn Wilhoit
Mrs. Martha Jane Gunn Wilhoit, 78, of Warrenton entered into rest Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Trinity Hospital, Augusta.

She was the wife of the late Jud P. Wilhoit Jr. and the daughter of the late Jamie Simeon Gunn and the late Blanche Lowe Gunn. Mrs. Wilhoit was a native of Warren County, a graduate of Georgia State College for Women at Milledgeville, with a bachelor of science degree in education. She was a school teacher, having taught in the public schools of Rockdale, Greene, Morgan, Washington, Hancock, Jefferson and Warren counties. She retired in 1992 from Briarwood Academy after 18 years of service. She was a member of Johnson United Methodist Church, Adult Sunday school class, Warren County Chamber of Commerce and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at Johnson Cemetery, Warrenton, with Jack McCorkle and Rev. David Jenkins officiating.

Survivors include her son, Judson “Trip” Wilhoit III (Janie), Lizella; her daughter, Ocie Blanche “O.B.” Wilhoit McCorkle (Christopher) Warrenton; two grandchildren, Christopher Scott “Tad” McCorkle II and Martha Diane “Mia” McCorkle; three step-grandchildren, Melanie Dane “Mindy” Hawkins (Girard) Jones, Brooke Hawkins (Brad) Williams and Daniel Tyler Hawkins; and one brother, James Lowe Gunn, Warrenton.

Pallbearers were J. J. Gunn, John Gunn, Jimmy Stewart, Gunn Stewart, Billy Wilhoit, Scott Johnson and Bobby Thigpen.

Mr. Bobby Arrington
Mr. Bobby Arrington, 77, of Wadley entered into rest on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Glendale Nursing Home.

Mr. Arrington was born in Jefferson County and had lived most of his life here. He was a night guard for Fulgham Industries.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Smith Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Benefield Cemetery.

Survivors include a brother, Verlyn Arrington (Kay) of Swainsboro; a sister, Nell Gregory (Frank) of Smyrna; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Frances J. May Gable
Mrs. Frances J. May Gable of Grovetown entered into rest Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Golden Living at Windermere.

Mrs. Gable was born in Gibson, was a homemaker and a member of Bellevue Baptist Church. She was a member of the NCO Wives Club and the Brunswick Bowling League.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Thomas L. King Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Sherrill Dunn officiating. Interment was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, retired Sr. Master/Sgt. John B. Gable Sr.; a son, John B. Gable; four brothers, Cecil May, John May, Roland May and Daniel May.

Survivors include one son, Robert A. Gable, Anchorage, Ala.; three daughters, Rev. Barbara May Gable Wills, Northwood, Iowa, Saundra Renee McCorkle, Dearing, and Laura Wilson, Augusta; one brother, William P. May, Warner Robins; one sister, Ruby Mills, Gibson; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Robert Gable, John Wills, Phil McCorkle, Larry Mays, Issac Gable and Joseph Ruskey.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be given to the Augusta Rescue Mission, 526 Walker St., Augusta, Ga. 30901 or the Salvation Army, 1384 Greene St., Augusta, Ga. 30901.

Mr. Kenneth Damon Pugh
Mr. Kenneth Damon Pugh of Hephzibah entered into rest Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Medical College of Georgia.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at noon at B.A. Williams Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bernice Orange officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include his mother, Reatta Peterson, Hephzibah; father, Kenneth Pugh, Augusta; two sisters, Carvardis Budgett, Wrens, and Precious Oliver, Hephzibah; grandparents, Mary Strowbridge, Augusta, and Ellis Pugh Sr., Augusta; a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Mrs. Joann Reese
Mrs. Joann Reese of Mitchell entered into rest on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at University Hospital, Augusta.

She was a native of Glascock County and lived here all of her life.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2008, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Washington County, with Rev. Sam Griswold officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Sr. and Ruth Dixon Reese.

Survivors include five daughters, Shirley Black of Cheyenne, Wyo., Helen Rodriguez of North Carolina, Hilda Norris, Darlene Griswold and Ruth Griswold, all of Gibson; one son, Raymond Griswold of Mitchell; three sisters, Beaulah Proctor of Thomson, Betty Jean Kelley and Hazel Kelley, both of Mitchell; two brothers, Clarence Reese Jr. of Gibson and Jamie Reese of Augusta; and 13 grandchildren.

Rev. C. Roy Smith
Rev. C. Roy Smith, 75, of Martin, entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at his home.

Born May 30, 1933, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Eulala Cox Smith. He was a 1950 graduate of Lavonia High School. He attended Georgia Southwestern College, Atlanta Division, of the University of Georgia, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He had worked for the Georgia Secretary of State. He was an ordained Baptist minister and served for over 50 years pastoring churches in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. He was ordained into the ministry at the Martin Baptist Church in 1958. He pastored Providence Baptist in Clarkesville, Tiger Baptist, First Baptist of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Pinehurst Baptist, Pleasant Grove Baptist of Avera, Hunter’s Creek Baptist, Pendergrass Baptist and retired from Old Liberty Baptist and Rock Springs Baptist. He served several churches as interim pastor during retirement including Cross Roads Baptist, Hunter’s Creek Baptist and Rock Springs Baptist. He had been an employee of Ginn Funeral Home for 33 years, served in the U.S. Army during the

Korean War, was a Master Mason and member of Grove Lodge #652 and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Services were held on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. David Wilson, Rev. Bill Evans and Rev. Bobby Jones. Interment was in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Eulala Cox Smith; son, Stephen Charles; three brothers, Howard Smith, Herschel Smith and Walter Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Burgess Smith of Martin; one son, Nathan Smith, Martin; two daughters, Sharon (Kurt) Hansen, Loganville, and Susan Smith, Martin; four grandchildren, Grace McCurry, Hans and T.J. Hansen and Grant Smith; sister, Mary Ruth (Jones) South, Martin; aunt, Louise Cox, Anderson, S.C.

Pallbearers were Wayne Smith, Doyle Smith, Travis McFarlin, Bruce Elrod, Amos Sutherland, Kurt Hansen, Mrs. Don Hadden and Mrs. Lamar Kitchens.

Honorary pallbearers were pastor, friends and members of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 1350 Church Street, Avera, Georgia 30803.
