Mrs. Jessie King “Jet” Sims
Mrs. Jessie King “Jet” Sims, 64, of Wrens entered into rest on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009.

Mrs. Sims was born on Feb. 20, 1945, in Warren County, to George Robert Wicker and the late Lillie Mae Lockhart. She was raised in Warren County and attended the public schools there. She joined the Greenwood Baptist Church, Norwood, at an early age. She relocated to Stapleton until 1972 and then moved to Wrens. She was a member of the Spring Bethel Benevolence Society.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Greenwood Baptist Church, with Pastor Rev. Coleman Hayes Jr., Rev. Kenneth Hannah presiding, and Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr. as eulogist. Interment was in the cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her mother; and brother, Gonnie King.

Survivors include four daughters, Clara (Tyrone) Sims, Atlanta, Naomi Sims, Wrens, and Jessie (Perry) Thomas and Betty (Gary) Brown, all of Stapleton; three sons, Sylvester Sims, Augusta, and Ivester Sims Jr. and Grady Sims, both of Wrens; friend, Hershel Fleming, Lexington; son-in-law, Leotis Farmer, Wrens; father, George R. Wicker, Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Ree Ethel (John) Stone Davis, Dublin, and Patricia (Willie) Simpson, Atlanta; six brothers, Leonard Franklin, Nathaniel (Olivia) Wicker, Kenneth Wicker, Robert (Kittie) Wicker, Andrea Wicker and Wesley (Beverly) Wicker, all of Atlanta; six aunts, Ida Mae Burley and Clara Mae (Moses) Heath, both of Norwood, Mary Alice Dotson and Louise Woods, both of Warrenton, and Lizzie Mae Seals and Lucille (Vernon) Swint, both of Carrollton; four uncles, Sam King, Norwood, Willie James Wicker and Nebraska (Charlene) Wicker, both of Carrollton, and Herman Castleberry, Thomson; great-aunt, Essie B. Dotson, Norwood; sisters-in-law, Mattie Tremble, Stapleton, Isabell King, Wrens, and Ruby King, Augusta; brother-in-law, Willie A. Lockhart, Wrens; cousin, Sheree Crafton; godson, Alex Nelson, Louisville; 25 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lucy Steed Strickland
Mrs. Lucy Steed Strickland, 89, of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her family.

A native of Winfield, Mrs. Strickland was a daughter of the late William Ernest and Ruby Maude Pascal Steed. Before retiring Mrs. Strickland was a caterer and florist working with Thigpen Flowers in Wrens. She was a member of Louisville First Baptist Church for more than 50 years, and the Philathea Sunday School Class.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Louisville First Baptist Church, with Rev. Larry Montgomery and Rev. Hardy Owens officiating. Burial followed in the Louisville City Cemetery

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, James Paul Strickland Jr.; brothers, Charles Steed and Bill Collins; sister, Polly Thigpen; daughter, Frances (Jay) Roddy of Columbia, S.C.; four sons, Jimmy (Becky) Strickland of Charlotte, N.C., Charles Strickland of Louisville, Glenn (Debbie) Strickland of Perry, Fla., and Robert “BJ” (Glenda Lee) Strickland of Louisville; daughter-in-law Pam Strickland of Greenville, S.C.; brother-in-law, Joe (Shirley) Strickland of Hickory, N.C.; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Larry Stanley, Ott Stephens, Larry Morgan, Wendell Stephens, Frank Etheridge and John R. Murphy III.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Louisville First Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests, those desiring, please make contributions to the Louisville First Baptist Church at 101 E. 9th St., Louisville, GA, 30434.

Mrs. Recie M. Brown
Mrs. Recie M. Brown of Augusta entered into rest on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Trinity Hospital.

Mrs. Brown, a native of Louisville, was a homemaker and a member of Fairview Missionary Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Fiarview Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in Walker Memorial Park. .

Survivors include two sons, Frederick (Carmen) Polen Sr. and Charles Polen, all of Augusta; four daughters, Antoinette Polen Bass, Augusta, Sarah (John) Hampton and Cynthia (Lavan) Shaheed, all of Riverdale, and Katherine (Reuben) Perry, Jacksonville, Fla.; five sisters, Jeanette Shields and Ann Green, both of Augusta, Dorothy (Johnny) Hill, Louisville, Betty (Ulysses) Brigham, Hephzibah, and Christine (William) Whatley, East Point; one brother, Milton (Delores) Brown, Augusta; two aunts, Carrie “Amy” Atkins, Louisville, and Sarah Ferguson, Augusta; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Della “Dot” Fredell
Mrs. Mary Della “Dot” Fredell, 67, of Louisville entered into rest on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Waldens UMC, Avera, with Tommy Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

A memorial service was held in Florida at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Fellsmere, Fellsmere, Fla.

Mrs. Fredell was born and spent most of her life in Micco, Fla. She moved to Georgia in March of this year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Fredell; and parents, William D. and Mary Evers Tumblin.

Survivors include her four daughters, Elaine Shipley, Louisville, Kandy Pierce, Micco, Fla., Michelle (Harold) Miller, Louisville, and Nicole Fredell, Micco, Fla.; two brothers, Gene (Inez) Tumblin, Palm Bay, Fla., and Cecil (Anna) Tumblin, Pensacola, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Brandy Bryant, Jessica Barnes, Amanda Combs, Daniel Combs, Courtney Liberto, Jada Miller, Boo Miller, Jessy Rizzo, John Young, Stephanie Shipley, Hunter Miller and Sheyenne Miller; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Combs.

James Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. William Thomas “Tommy” Godowns
Mr. William Thomas “Tommy” Godowns, 70, of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Godowns was a native of Jefferson County. He was retired from Thermo King Corp. after 35 years of service as a welding supervisor. He was president and owner of the J.J.G. Hunting Club, he was a member of Providence Baptist Church, a member of the Jefferson County Lions and Jaycees Club, and coached Little League Football.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at Providence Baptist Church, with Rev. Larry Martin officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie Wren and William Jones Godowns; son, William Thomas Godowns Jr.; and two brothers, Jack and Roy Godowns.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Rachel Williford Godowns; three daughters, Tina Marie (Randy) Harper of Augusta, and Janet Lisa Bryant and Amanda Godowns, both of Louisville; two brothers, Billy (Linda) Godowns of Louisville, and Bob (Faye) Godowns of Louisville; four sisters, Frances (Jimmy) Kelley of Mitchell, Dorothy (Bob) Rayburn of Galax, Va., Kay (Robert) Downs of Hiawassee, and Joanna (Bud) McNeely of Wadley; four grandchildren, Kalein Bryant, Rachel Nicole Johnson, Alison Bryant and Grace Godowns; and two great-grandchildren, Katherine Kicklighter and Zoie Bryant.

Pallbearers were Elvin Williford, Jack Godowns, Bill Godowns, Buddy Barrow, Ray Williford and Frank Williford.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the J.J.G. Hunting club.

Mr. Alva L. Haywood
Mr. Alva L. Haywood, 87, of Warrenton entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at the Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville.

Mr. Haywood was a retired businessman, and former mayor of the city of Warrenton.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at Warrenton First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Susanna Davis and Rev. Jim Hanna officiating. Burial followed in the Millcreek Baptist Church Cemetery, Glascock County.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the USO World Headquarters, Department WS, PO Box 96960 Washington, D.C., 20090-6860

Mr. Randolph L. “Mike” Johnson Sr.
Mr. Randolph L. “Mike” Johnson Sr., 81, of Augusta entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Select Specialty Hospital.

Mr. Johnson, a native of Augusta, was the son of the late John Ewell and Millie M. Johnson. He was a member of Marks Baptist Church and a Merchant Marine. He was a carpenter and home builder before owning Mike’s Bait and Tackle and also was co-owner of Double J Builders.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Pastor Stacey Williford officiating.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Moxley.

Survivors include his son, Randolph L. Johnson Jr. (April) of Mitchell; daughter, Norma Johnson Pate of Martinez; brothers, Rudolph L. Johnson of Augusta, and Gene F. Johnson of Dearing; sister, Louise Pruitt of Killen, Texas; grandchildren, Randolph L. “Little Randy” Johnson III, Andrea Calahan and Jeremy Duncan; step-grandchildren, Terry Morrison and Matt Morrison; and aunt, Billie Williams.

Pallbearers were William Johnson, Trey Johnson, Jeremiah Johnson, David Powell, George Lewis and Walter Murray.

Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Joyce Stanley Mock
Mrs. Joyce Stanley Mock of Sandersville entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at her residence following an extended illness.

Mrs. Mock was a native of Colquitt County, the daughter of the late Norman Oswald Stanley and the late Mattie Annell Windham Stanley. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Grove Bapist Church. Mrs. Mock was a graduate of Georgia College and an artist.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Marlon Lastinger officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband Chris L. Mock of Sandersville; children, Allen Mock (Laura Hollie) of Mitchell, Belinda M. Nicholson (Richard) of Buckhead, and Lori Mock of Sandersville; grandchildren, Derek Mock, Tristan Mock, Chandler Mock, Josh Nicholson and Matthew Nicholson; a great-granddaughter, Emma Mock; sister, Nancy S. Vidal (Richard Railsback) of Silt, Colo.; brothers, Norman Lamar Stanley (Bonnie) of Albuquerque, N.M., William Raymond Stanley of Prescott, Ariz., and Richard Steven Stanley (Lynn) of Dallas.

Pallbearers will be Ernie Campbell, Josh Jones, Lamar Jackson, Rick Jones, Derek Mock, John Hollie, Harold Royal, and Aaron Stanley.

Mrs. Joyce Tillman Muirhead
Mrs. Joyce Tillman Muirhead, 69, of Augusta entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at 6:45 a.m.

A native of Tillar, Ark., she was a resident of the Statesboro area and Savannah for many years. She was a graduate of Armstrong State University and studied at Victory Bible Institute and Missionary Training Center in Tulsa, Okla. She volunteered her nursing skills on several medical mission trips to Haiti and Mexico. She was a daily communicant at Church of the Most Holy Trinity.

A memorial mass was held at Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Augusta on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009 at 12:15 p.m.

Survivors include two daughters, Vanee T. Blanchette of Statesboro, and Cheri T. Kirby of Bartow; five grandchildren; sister, Dolores Coleman; and niece, Nancy Spilliards.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to a favorite charity.

Mrs. Virginia Johnson Neal
Mrs. Virginia Johnson Neal, 79, of Mitchell entered into rest Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Neal was born in Warren County and was the daughter of the late Charlie T. Johnson and the late Mildred Darden Johnson. She was retired from Thomson Company with over 20 years of service. Mrs. Neal also worked at Neal’s Barbeque for many years. She was a member of Norris Chapel Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. James M. Ramsey officiating. Interment followed at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Neal was preceded in death by her husband, Bryant Neal; and daughter, Patricia Neal Brown.

Survivors include her sons, Danny Neal (Shirley) of Grovetown, and Mike Neal (Lynn) of Mitchell; brother, Harry T. Johnson, Thomson; sister, Minnie Lee Brown, Harlem; grandchildren, Betsy Norris, Michael Lee Neal Jr., Patricia Denise Neal, Derek Neal, Dana Neal and Candi Wheeler; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Billy Neal, John Edward Neal, Jimmy Young, Jimmy Steptoe, David Kitchens and Scott Fitzgerald.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Private services were held on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, in Atlanta.

Mr. Donald Stephens, retired Army Staff Sergeant, 66, of Augusta entered into rest on Monday, Dec. 6, 2009, at the Uptown Division of the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center.

Mr. Lamar Walker of Louisville entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Green Grove AME Zion Church, with Pastor Samuel Grant officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
