Rev. Hardy S. Bennings Jr.
Funeral services for Rev. Hardy S. Bennings Jr., of Augusta, were held Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
Rev. Bennings was born in Augusta, on Sept. 2, 1944, to Rosebud May Bennings and Hardy S. Bennings, Sr.
His Christian life began at an early age when he was baptized at the Springfield Baptist Church.
Rev. Bennings was ordained in the ministry in 1986. He served as pastor and shepherd of the Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church of Louisville for 14 years. Prior to his pastorate at St. Paul and until his demise, he served as an associate pastor of the Historic Springfield Baptist Church and interim pastor of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Thomson and the Second Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Augusta. He received a bachelor’s in sociology and psychology at Albany State University. He did further study at the University of Georgia. During his career in youth services, he served in many capacities including teaching at the Augusta Youth Development Campus, directing the Regional Youth Detention Center in Augusta, and directing the Augusta Youth Development Campus. He also served as a commissioner on the Augusta/Richmond County Human Relations Commission, a member of the board of directors of the Augusta Chapter of the American Red Cross, a member of the Board of Directors of the Laney-Walker Development Corporation, volunteered with the American Red Cross. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. On Dec. 22, 1968, Rev. Bennings married
Shirley Denson Bennings.
Survivors include his wife Shirley; his children, Hardy III (Sonja); Kimberly, Patrick, and Todd, all of Atlanta; his granddaughter, Morgan, Orangeburg, S.C.; his sisters-in-law, Lois Tookes, Americus; Anna Clark, College Park, Jerri Monroe, Olney, Md., and Cassandra (Clyde) Fleet, Silver Spring, Md.; his brother-in-law, Otha Denson Jr., Meridian, Miss.; his aunts, Verlia May, Washington, D. C. and Geisla May, Jamaica, N.Y.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Blanche Huntley Brown, of Louisville, were held Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at Church of Christ on Elm Street, Louisville. Burial was in the Jones Grove Cemetery.
She was a homemaker.
Mr. Isah Hudson
Funeral services for Mr. Isah Hudson, 74, of Camak, were held on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Cody Grove Baptist Church, Warrenton, with the Pastor, Rev. Andrew Grant officiating. Interment was in the churchyard cemetery.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Lizzie Hudson, Camak; three daughters, Betty (Lonnie) Daniels, Camak, Connie (J. B.) Winfrey, Mesena, and Angela Marie (Nathaniel) Deloach, Augusta; seven sons, Frank (Loretta) King, Alfonso Hudson, both of Augusta, Isaiah (Maureen) King, Virginia, Herbert Hudson, Camak, Sylvester Hudson, Thomson, Larry Hudson, Wrens, and Nathaniel Hudson, Germany; a sister, Mammie (Charles) Turman, Thomson; two brothers, Wyman Hudson, Mesena, and R. Mrs. Florine Jones, 76, of Wrens, entered into rest Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at 3:30 p.m. at Stone Springfield AME Church, Stapleton, with Rev. Michael Ephraim officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Lamar Jones; seven children, Thelma Jones, Dennis (Laverne) Jones, Lamar Jones, Renee Armstrong, Michael Brown, Dwane Brown, and Christopher Brown; siblings, Freddie L. Jordan, Claudia Ann Mills, Roy Brown, Johnnie (Linda) Brown, and Garvin (Rosemary) Brown; and 22 grandchildren.

Ms. Mildred P. Jones
Ms. Mildred P. Jones, 85, of Louisville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at her home.
Ms. Jones was born Feb. 13, 1922, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Travis and Zona Price. She was a homemaker and former owner/operator of A.C. Jones Appliance Company in Louisville. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Louisville. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the late Alvin C. Jones.
Graveside funeral services for Ms. Jones were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at the Westview cemetery in Wrightsville. Rev. Bill Smith officiated.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Preston) Thomas of Evans, and Barbara (William) Fowlkes of Roswell; a sister, Luella (Dr. J. Roy) Rowland of Dublin; four grandchildren, Christopher (Apryl) Thomas, Nicholas (Merri) Thomas, Chad (Heather) Fowlkes, and Kimberly (Len) Lindros; and five great-grandchildren, Shay Thomas, Anna Thomas, Sophie Thomas, Luke Thomas and Emmie Lindros.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions, in memory of Ms. Jones, be made to the Alzeimers Association, Augusta Chapter, 1899 Central Avenue, Augusta, Georgia 30904 or to the American Heart Association, 1105 Furys Lane, Suite D, Augusta, Georgia 30907.

Mr. Roy H. Martin
Mr. Roy H. Martin, 38, of Mitchell, entered into rest Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Martin was a native of Richmond County but lived in Glascock County. He was a master electrician.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at the Mitchell City cemetery with Mary Ann Braswell officiating.
Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Kim Martin; one son, Ryan Martin; two brothers, Ray Martin Jr. of Hephzibah, and Cecil Waters of California; three sisters, Gloria Moore of Martinez, Sandra Klein of Thomson, and Terry Roll of Martinez; one sister-in-law, Janet (Bill) Raley of Mitchell; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Mr. William Harrison Powell
Mr. William Harrison Powell, 85, of Bartow, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at Jefferson Hospital.
Mr. Powell was born in Cherokee County, Ala., the son of the late Arthur H. Powell and the late Plumer Gertrude Smith Powell. He was retired from the Miami-Dade International Airport dispatch services and a 50 year resident of the Miami area. Mr. Powell was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and a member of the Crewman’s Association of the USS Alabama.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Matako Allen Powell of Bartow; daughter, Nancy P. Thom (Horst) of Cave Creek, Ariz., stepchildren, Brent Chamlee (Patricia) of Alpharetta, Alicia King (Keith) of Palm Coast, Fla., and Ronald Lee Cranes of Tallahassee, Fla.; grandchild, Chris King of Key West, Fla.; sister, Julene Chapman of Ringold; and brother, Adrian “Bud” Powell of Alabama.

Mr. Leonard Hewett Smith
Mr. Leonard Hewett Smith, age 74, of Wadley, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Smith was born in Emanuel County and after many years away moved to Wadley. He attended University of Florida and University of Georgia. He graduated from Georgia State University in Atlanta in 1964 with a BBA degree. Mr. Smith retired from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where he was a senior budget analyst. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea from 1951-1954. He was active in Toastmasters International for many years and AA for 20 years, and a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Lambs Chapel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Donna Ashworth officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his daughters, Teresa Jan Peeler and Stefanie Sabra Smith; sons, Leonard H. Smith Jr. and Josef Cecil Smith; stepdaughter, Pamila Butler; and brothers, Rev. J. Larrie Smith of Belair, Md., and Tilden W. Smith of Valdosta.
Pallbearers were Matthew Smith, Mark Smith, Richard Smith, Stefanie Smith, Lyynn Smith, Josef Smith and Edgar Smith.

Mrs. Ivelyn Dixon Thompson
Mrs. Ivelyn Dixon Thompson, 86, of Avera, entered into rest Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at James Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Robert J. Lehn and Rev. Lester Clark officiating. Burial followed at the Wrens Memorial Garden.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Wrens and was a homemaker. She was the wife of the late James Leon Thompson for 58 years, and she was the daughter of the late Homer Dixon and Bashie Miller Dixon.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her son, Sherwin Thompson; grandson, Kevin Thompson; two brothers, Denier Dixon and Aurin Dixon; and a sister, Deryl D. Pittman.
Survivors include her children, Darrell (Bobbie) Thompson, Larry (Debbie) Thompson, and Charleen T. (Bruce) Boyd, all of Jefferson County.; two sisters, Charlotte D. (Rev. Lamar) Rabun and Delorse D. Williford; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Nona C. Thompson.
Pallbearers were Mrs. Thompson's grandsons.

Mrs. Trudie M. Hannah Vining, of Wadley, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, in Louisville.
Her funeral was held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Brinson Hill Baptist Church in Wadley with her son, Rev. Earnest James Vining, officiating. Burial was in Little Pine Hill cemetery in Bartow.
Pallbearers were Willie Jones, Harvey Jackson, Darrell Jackson, Eugene Tarver and Roosevelt Tarver.

Mrs. Bernice Hudson Bostic of Wadley entered into rest on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, in Augusta.
Her funeral was held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Brinson Hill Baptist Church in Wadley, with Rev. Dr. David Kemp officiating. Burial was in the Live Oak cemetery in Wadley.
Survivors include two daughters, Charlene (Jack) Wilcher and Gail Bostic, Linden, N.J.; one son, Thomas Johnson, Hampton, Va.; a sister, Eliza Jane May, Newark, N.J.; two brothers, Howard (Verda) Hudson, Wadley, and Charlie Hudson, Lake Alfred, Fla.; two grandchildren reared as her own, Rashonda Bernice Bostic, Statesboro, and Rodney Maurice Bostic, Wadley; other grandchildren, Terrence Tremayne Wilcher, Travis Terrel Wilcher and Tyler Tion Wilcher, Linden, N.J.; four great- grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. J.W. Braswell
Mr. J.W. Braswell, 76, of Gibson entered into rest Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at the V.A. Hospital, Augusta.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at the Gibson Union Methodist Church with Rev. Griffin Thompson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Braswell was a native of Jefferson County, born to the late Walter and Cora Lee Braswell. He was a member of the Gibson United Methodist Church and a Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. He worked at the Lily Cup Factory for 22 years and at the J.M. Huber Chalk Company for 19 years. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by sister, Inez Kitchens and a granddaughter, Amy Braswell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mrs. Sybil Neal Braswell; two sons, Mike (Joan) Braswell of Gibson, and Larry (Marcia) Braswell of Mesena; one brother, Bobby (Mary Ann) Braswell of Stapleton; four grandchildren, Jason Braswell, Tara (Paul) Searcy, Travis Braswell and Ray Hill; one great-grandchild, Payton Amy Searcy. Pallbearers were Bruce Logue, Richard Kitchens, Jack Crunkelton, Jeff Crunkelton, Matt Knoeferl, Ross Rabun and Eric Braswell.

Mr. Louis P. "Lou" Davis, Sr.
Mr. Louis P. “Lou” Davis, Sr., 74, of Augusta entered into rest Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008.
Mr. Davis was a native and life long resident of Augusta. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Augusta Bowling Association for over 50 years. Mr. Davis was also a member of New Heights Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev. Lloyd Greene officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his son, Paul Davis, and daughters, Diane Davis and Renee Duncan.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Ora Manning Davis; his daughters, LouAnn (James) Davis Burnett of Evans, Laurie (Chris) Davis Cantwell of Evans; sons, Louis Patterson Davis Jr. of Augusta, Lee (Rachel) Jeffrey Davis of Matthews; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Louis Patterson Davis Jr., Lee Jeffrey Davis, James Burnett, Chris Cantwell, Brandon Kitchens and Larry Maioirello.
