Mrs. Julia Ella "Nanny" Brett
Mrs. Julia Ella “Nanny” Brett, 85, of Wadley died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Jefferson Hospital.
Mrs. Brett was born in Jefferson County and had lived here all her life. She was a member of Bethesda Primitive Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder Emerson Proctor officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eben and Ada Jane Watkins; a grandson, John Curtis Brett; a daughter-in-law, Leigh Ann Brett; a brother, Holmes Watkins; and two sisters, Willa Kicklighter and Delle Smith.
Survivors include her husband, John Virgil Brett of Wadley; four sons, Curt (Sandra) Brett, Randy (Bonnie) Brett, Herbie (Alice) Brett and Ray Brett; eight grandchildren, Ty Brett, Kristal (Byron) Gelderman, Daniel (Ashley) John Brett, Megan Brett, Kalynn Brett, Chloe Brett, Anna Brett and Kara Brett; one great-grandchild, Will Gelderman.
Pallbearers were Dan Brett, Ty Brett, Byron Gelderman, Bryan Watkins, Ray Dukes and Tommy Dukes.

Little Miss Ariel Frederick
Little Miss Ariel Frederick, 2 ½ weeks, died Friday, July 4, 2008, at her residence in Atlanta.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 10, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home Chapel, Louisville, and Blount Chapel AME Church Cemetery, Bartow.
Survivors include her parents, Dariel Patrice Frederick and Dadeangelo Monteg Hines Jr. of Atlanta; maternal grandparents, Tammy Frederick and Daryll Fredrick of Atlanta; paternal grandparents, Dolselia Green and Dadeangelo Monteg Hines Sr. of Atlanta; maternal great-grandparents, Donnie Stephens of Louisville, Rev. Richard and Teresa Curry of Jacksonville, Fla.; Mary Cunningham of Americus; maternal great-great-grandmother, Rosie Lee Jackson of Louisville; paternal great-great grandmother, Diane Green of Atlanta; a host of aunts, uncles, great aunts and great uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Chris Gibbons
Mr. Chris Gibbons, 61, of Thomson entered into rest Thursday, July 10, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Gibbons was a native of Donalsonville and lived in Thomson for many years. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves and was retired as an Insurance Representative with United Insurance of America with over 30 years of service. Mr. Gibbons was also a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Sweetwater Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Garvin officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Survivors include wife, Betty Beasley Gibbons of Thomson; daughters, Tracey McCarty- Thomson, Deana Tiner (Scott) of Wrens, Crissy Poole of Wrens, Lynn Bartlett (James) of Harlem; sons, Craig Reese and Jason Reese, both of Gibson; sisters, Gayle Swan (Bob) of Wrens, Marsha Bond (Ed) of Donalsonville, Donna Moye (Cosby) of Donalsonville; and 12 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Skeet Reeves, Tommy Gantt, Cale Tiner, Spence Touchton, Blaine Touchton, Ray Story, Brad Swan and Robert Swan Jr.

Mr. Gene "Buddy" Henderson
Mr. Gene “Buddy” Henderson, 76, of Louisville died Friday, July 11, 2008, in Jefferson Hospital.
Mr. Henderson, a native of Jefferson County, was a son of the late John Taylor and Lois Estelle McNeely Henderson. He was a retired maintenance worker for the Louisville Housing Authority. Mr. Henderson was a lifelong member of the Louisville First United Methodist Church where he was the bell ringer for many years, a member of the Louisville Lions Club, the Louisville Fire Department and the Georgia State Firefighter’s Association.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in the Louisville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dewey Henderson and Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Burial followed in the Louisville City Cemetery.
Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Grace Henderson and Bernice Ethridge; and brothers, Paul Henderson and Franklin Henderson.
Survivors include his sisters, Elizabeth Braddock of Thomson, Mary Purvis of Thomson, and Lillian- Katharine Blanos of Augusta; a brother, John Lewis Henderson of Macon; brother-in-law, Frank Ethridge of Louisville; several nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Pallbearers were nephews and great-nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were W.G. Davis Jr. and members of the Louisville Fire Department and the Louisville Lions Club.

Mr. Edridge Johnson
Mr. Eldridge Johnson, 73, of Sparta entered into rest Tuesday, July 8, 2008.
Mr. Johnson was born in Glascock County, grew up in Dearing, and lived in Sparta for the past 47 years. He was the son of the late Eulie Johnson and the late Lurene Newsome Johnson. Mr. Johnson served in the U. S. National Guard, the U. S. Army and the U.S. Navy. He was also a heavy equipment operator for Baldwin County for over 30 years.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Friday, July 11, 2008, at the Knowles Chapel United Methodist Church in Hancock County with Rev. Charles Reese officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a son, Johnny E. Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret S. Johnson, Sparta; son, Jimmy E. Johnson (Emma), Sparta; sister, Elvie Reese, Warrenton; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Seburn Johnson, Sparta; sister-in-law, Carrie Jo Mashburn (Johnny), Sparta.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.

Mrs. Carolyn Steptoe Jones
Mrs. Carolyn Steptoe Jones, 67, of Quitman, died on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at South Georgia Medical Center from a sudden illness.
Born on Nov. 3, 1940, in Soperton, she was the daughter of the late Luke and Bessie Steptoe. Mrs. Jones was a homemaker. She attended Wayfare Primitive Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 13, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Magnolia Room Chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Elder Dwight Marshall officiated. Burial followed at Wayfare Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughters, Elaine (Marshall) Lanier of Millen, Teresa (John) Newton of Quitman; grandchildren, LCPL Adam Lanier of Washington, D.C., Justin Lanier of Millen, Joshua Newton and Wesley Newton of Quitman; brother, Cleveland Steptoe Jr. of Millen; brother-in-law, Carlton (Barbara) Jones of Swainsboro; sisters-in-law, Sara (Randy) Moore of Wadley, and Peggy (Billy) Dailey of Stillmore; several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Jones.

Mr. James Oliver Smith Sr.
Mr. James Oliver Smith, Sr. age 74, of Warrenton died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Smith, a native of Glascock County, was the son of the late Mr. Herman and Opal Chalker Smith and had been a Warren County resident since 1947. He was a farmer and a member of the Warren County Cattleman’s Association, the Warren County Farm Bureau, and Long Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Long Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Chad Crews officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Teresa Smith Lawrence, Warrenton; three sons, James Oliver (Leah) Smith Jr., Jacksonville, Fla., John Wayne Smith, Augusta, and Jeffery Smith, Warrenton; two sisters, Joyce (Derwin) Adkins, Young Harris, and Velma ( Billy) Freeman, Dallas; one brother, Thomas (Agnes) Smith, Washington; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Yeoman Eugene "Y.E." Wasden
Mr. Yeoman Eugene “Y. E.” Wasden, 84, of Louisville died Monday, July 14, 2008, at his home after a long illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2008, in the Louisville First Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the Louisville City cemetery with full Military Honors.
Mr. Wasden, a native of Jefferson County, was a son of the late Yoeman and Mattie Kitchens Wasden. He was the manager of the Louisville Piggly Wiggly Supermarket for over 42 years. He then became a real estate broker and founded Wasden Realty, Inc. He was a member of Louisville First Baptist Church and a charter member of the Louisville Lions Club. Mr. Wasden was a decorated World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army 31st Infantry Dixie Division in the Pacific Theater. He continued his military service with the National Guard until 1968, retiring at the rank of Major.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Betty W. Wasden of Louisville; three children, Alan (Lisa) Wasden of Louisville, Douglas (Kim) Wasden of Bowman, and Karen (Robert) Yonchak of Louisville; six grandchildren, Clayton, Logan, Faith and Elly Wasden, and Anna and Emily Yonchak.

Mr. Donald Mitchell Whitney Sr.
Mr. Donald Mitchell Whitney Sr. of Texas passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, after a battle with cancer.
Mr. Whitney was born in Marietta on June 13, 1940. He is the great-grandson of Col. Robert M. Mitchell, the namesake of the town of Mitchell. He attended Marietta public schools and graduated form the University of West Georgia in 1963. Upon graduation from the University, Don enlisted in the Army under the Officer Candidate School program at Fort Sill, Okla. After his service he returned to Marietta to work for the Lockheed-Georgia Company. After a short time with Lockheed, he accepted a position as a Logistic Engineer with Texas Instruments, Inc., in Dallas, Texas in 1967. He retired in 1996.
Memorial services were held at 4 p.m. on Monday July 7, 2008, at The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Dallas, Texas. Interment services were in Mertzon, Texas at the family gravesite near their ranch.
Mr. Whitney was preceded in death by his father, Harry Farmer Whitney; mother, Marie Reid Whitney; twin brother, Alfred Whitney; and younger brother, William L. Whitney.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; and son Donald Mitchell Whitney Jr.

Mrs. Elizabeth McBride Black
Mrs. Elizabeth McBride Black, 89, formerly of Millen, died Monday, July 14, 2008, at her residence in Milledgeville.
Mrs. Black, known as “Libby” by her friends and family, was born in Vidette, the daughter of the late William Boyd and Sarah Elmina Agerton McBride. She worked as a beautician for many years in Augusta, Louisville and Millen. She was a member of the Millen United Methodist Church, the Beulah Garner Sunday School Class and the Joy Circle. She was also a member and past president of the Azalea Garden Club and a painter.
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William Marvin Black, and three brothers, William Thomas McBride, George McBride and Edward McBride.
Survivors include her daughter, Dianne (Theron) Johnson, of Milledgeville; three grandchildren, Jason (Rachel) Johnson of Dublin, Jennifer (Reid) Bookwalter of Cumming, and Ryan (Jen) Johnson of Winter Spring, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Justin Johnson of Sandersville/Dublin, Daniel Johnson of Sandersville, Parker and Payton Johnson of Winter Spring, Fla., and Porter Bookwalter of Cumming; a sister, Marjorie Story of Waynesboro; sisters-in-law, Edna Pearl McBride of Waynesboro, Virginia McBride of Millen, and Marjorie B. Brett of Grovetown; nieces and nephews; and friends, Hubert and Mary Radford of Milledgeville.

Survivors include his wife, Dannie Lee Lattimore Hall; two sons, Willie James (Diane) Hall, Wadley, and Melvin Hall, Davisboro; one sister-in-law, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Alice Frances "Gi Gi" Johnson
Mrs. Alice Frances “Gi Gi” Johnson, formerly of Augusta, entered into rest on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the University Hospital.
Ms. Johnson was a native of Columbia County, but made her home in Augusta. She was a member of Beulah Grove Baptist Church, where she served on the Ushers Ministry for over 40 years and also a member of the Missionary Ministry.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Beulah Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Sam Davis officiating. Interment was in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery, Matthews.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Thomas Johnson and Mr. Michael Beauford; two daughters, Mrs. Louise (Leotis) Scott, Matthews and Ms. Norma Jean Wells; two granddaughters, Mrs. Shannon Paschal and Tiease Wells; grandsons, Rickey Johnson and Thomas Johnson II; and a host of other relatives and friends.
