Mr. Christopher L. Mock
Mr. Christopher L. Mock, 72, of Sandersville entered into rest on Monday, March 1, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Mock was born and raised in Sylvania, the son of the late Harvey A. Mock and the late Ollie Elizabeth Mock. He was retired from Anglo American Clays and ECCI International as a maintenance supervisor. Mr. Mock was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist church and was an avid antique tractor hobbyist. He also formerly worked as a bread salesman for the Sun Beam Bread Company.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Marlon Lastinger officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Stanley Mock.
Survivors include his children, Allen Mock (Laura Hollie) of Mitchell, Belinda M. Nicholson (Richard) of Buckhead, and Lori Mock of Sandersville; grandchildren, Derek Mock, Tristan Mock, Chandler Mock, Josh Nicholson and Matthew Nicholson; a great-granddaughter, Emma Mock; brother, Walter Mock (Betty) of Sylvania; and sisters, Gloria Jones (W.C.) of Statham, Lela Oliver (Brown) of Sylvania, and Shelby Jean Miles of Statesboro.

Mrs. Eleanor Cook Norton
Mrs. Eleanor Cook Norton, 73, of Avera entered into rest on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at her residence.
A native of Atlanta, she was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she served as pianist.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Chris New and Rev. Donald Lumpkin officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel C. Norton.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (Terry) Kerstetter of Fairbanks, Ala., and Sheila L. Norton of Avera; one son, Ricky (Sandy) Norton of Avera; one sister, Dorothy Ellis of Peachtree City; four grandchildren, Mandy Trandell, Josh Kerstetter, Brittany Norton and Brad Norton; four great-grandchildren, Azeria Trandell, Tyce Trandell, Kindle Kerstetter and Kady Raines.
Pallbearers were Anthony Clark, Russell Clark, Warren “Boo” Mathis, Mark Thigpen, Bernard Pittman, Dwain Pittman and Mack Alligood.

Mrs. Alice McCallie Pressly
Mrs. Alice McCallie Pressly, 95, entered into rest on Feb. 15, 2010.
She belonged to two families who have long been involved in the history of independent education in the South, the McCallies in Tennessee and the Presslys in South Carolina. She herself played a role in the founding of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta in 1951. Along with her husband, Dr. William L. Pressly, she played a role in a chapter of the history of independent education in the South. Born Aug. 23, 1914, Alice McCallie Pressly was the daughter of the late Spencer Jarnagan McCallie and Alice Fletcher McCallie of Chattanooga, Tenn., part of a family that played a role in shaping Chattanooga from the early years of the 19th century. In 1905, her father, together with his brother, founded the McCallie School, which soon became a leading day-boarding school that set a standard for college preparatory education in the South. After graduating from the Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, founded by her great-aunt, she earned her B.A. from Agnes Scott College, where she received the Hopkins Jewel, awarded to the senior who best lives up to the College’s ideals. While teaching at the Girls Preparatory School, she married
Dr. Pressly, son of Dr. Paul Pressly, preacher of Louisville ARP Church for more than 20 years. Dr. Pressly was a faculty member at the McCallie School and the son, grandson, and great-grandson of Presbyterian ministers who had been involved with the creation and development of Erskine College in Due West, S.C. They were married
for 59 years until her husband’s death in 2001. In 1951, her husband left his position as co-headmaster of McCallie to become the founding president of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta. In 1994, the Board of Trustees recognized her by dedicating the plaza in front of Pressly Hall. She was a member of the 19th Century History Club and the Atlanta History Center. Her research into her own family’s history led to her joining the Joseph Habersham Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta.
Survivors include two sons, Paul Moffatt Pressly (Jane) of Savannah, and William Laurens Pressly (Nancy) of Washington, D.C.; grandson, David Pressly (Megan) of Atlanta; and two great-grandchildren, William Laurens Pressly and Caitlin Elizabeth Pressly; brother, David McCallie (Madden) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sister, Ellen McCallie Cochrane of Winchester, Va.; and sister-in-law Queenie McCallie of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and numerous nieces, nephews and related family.

Mr. Bennie C. Reid, 74, of Matthews entered into rest on Monday, March 1, 2010, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Reid was retired. He was the husband of Frances Reid, and the son of the late Mary and Brantley Reid.
Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2010, with Pastor Tommy Anderson officiating. Interment followed in the Reedy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include three children, Ponda (Keith) Pittman, Stapleton, Bonnie (Tommy) Wood, Martinez, and Scott (Michelle) Reid, Avera; brother, Carlton Reid, Thomson; sister, Helen Peebles, Stapleton; eight grandchildren, Michelle McNeely, Ryan Pittman, Denise Butler, Dana Milhouse, Trey Wood, Coty Wood, Magon Casarez and Storm Reid; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Mr. Robert E. Rhodes Sr., 79, of Dearing entered into rest on March 2, 2010. Bob loved his family.
Mr. Rhodes was the son of the late Frank Rhodes and Rhett Greene Rhodes of Richmond County.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Shannon “Baby Girl” Rhodes.

Mrs. Mary “Helen” Bush Smith
Mrs. Mary “Helen” Bush Smith, 77, of Wrens entered into rest on Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center.
Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County and was a founder and member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Earlier on, she catered and baked wedding cakes and then worked in the lunchroom at Wrens High School and later was the Food Service Director at Jefferson Hospital. She was the wife of Ernest “Smitty” Smith and daughter of the late Albert and Reba Russell Bush.
Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Willie Scroggins officiating. Interment followed in Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include her children, Rodney (Pam) Smith, Stapleton, Peggy (Randy) Cannon, Milledgeville, and Cynthia (Howard) Jones, Walterboro, S.C.; brother, John A. (Jo) Bush Jr., Augusta; three grandchildren, Jeff (Shannon) Smith, Chase Smith and Will Cannon; and one great-grandson, Ryan Smith.

Miss Maxie Lee Thomas
Miss Maxie Lee Thomas, 77, entered into rest on Thursday, March 4, 2010, at her residence.
Miss Thomas was a native of Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Mack and Annie Lee Flournoy Thomas. At an early age she joined the Ebenezer CME Church and was retired from Hartley Cleaners and Clean and Wash.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Faith Memorial CME Church and Cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Bertha (John) Wicker Sr., Shirley Jean Thomas and Karen Yvonne Thomas, all of Bartow; four sons, Allen Thomas of Louisville, Marion (Sonja) Thomas of Dublin, Jerry Dean Thomas of Louisville, and Alfred (Phillis) Thomas of Wadley; two godchildren, Barbara Ann Tarver of Bartow, and Robert Lane Thomas of Swainsboro; three sisters, Annie Lois Thomas of Louisville, Dessie Foster of Nashville, Tenn., and Beatrice Deraughn of Jacksonville, Fla.; four brothers, Henry Albert Thomas, Walter Evans (Lottie Mae) Thomas Sr. and Freddie (Rose Marion) Thomas, all of Bartow, and Rev. Mr. Lloyd Usry
Mr. Lloyd Usry, 94, of Gibson entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, being in failing health after he suffered a stroke in June 2008.
Mr. Usry was born on July 8, 1915, in Glascock County. He was the son of the late D.A. Usry and Sally Newsome Usry. In 1932, he married
Kate Clark who preceded him in death on June 2, 1981. He retired from the Augusta Police Department in 1972 and returned to Glascock County where he built his retirement home. He conducted weekly Bible classes for the residents at Gibson Nursing Home for several years.
Funeral services were held at Bethel Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, with Rev. Marion Jay officiating. Burial was in Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Lois Froess of Gibson, Lewis Usry of Gibson, Ruth Timmerman of Augusta and Mildred Bass of Augusta.
Survivors include his three children, Jawana Arrington-Garrett (Felix) of Augusta, C.F. Usry of North Augusta, S.C., and Barbara (Lester) Williams of Hephzibah; two brothers, Leroy Usry of Gibson and Kenneth Usry of Florida; two sisters, Glennis Williford of Gibson and Bessie Thomas of North Augusta; eight grandchildren, Mike (Cathy) Arrington, Keith (Stacy) Arrington, Karen (Chucky) Hughes, Lisa Redd, C.F. Mr. Williams was born on July 10, 1960, in Hartford, Conn. He grew up in Colorado Springs, Co., lived in Gunnison, Co., and spent the last 11 years in Canon City, Co.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack P. Williams of Wrens; and grandparents, Homer and Alma Williams of Wrens.

Mrs. Willie Clyde Bohler, 93, of Thomson entered into rest on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Bohler, a native of Glascock County, had lived in McDuffie County most of her life. She was a homemaker and member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Grant Cantrell and Rev. Kenneth Garvin officiating. Interment followed at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis O. Bohler; brothers and sister, Blanche Anderson, Alvie Wisham and Robert Whisham.
Survivors include her son, Ronnie (Mary) Louise Bohler, Thomson; grandchildren, Victor Bohler, Glenn Bohler, Sidney Bohler and Rhonda Bohler; and great-grandchildren, Tiffany Bohler, Brandon Bohler, Matthew Bohler and Cody Bohler.

Mrs. Calhoun was born in Edgefield, S.C., the daughter of Rufus and Geneva Pardue. She was a homemaker and a member of the Apostolic Christian Tabernacle. She was the widow of the late Mr. John Ray Calhoun.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Thomas L. King Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Willie Scott officiating. Interment was in Mt. Olive Memorial Gardens.
