Loretta Hipkins Martin
Mrs. Loretta Hipkins Martin of Louisville died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007.

Mrs. Martin, a native of Belmont County, Ohio, was the daughter of the late Joseph and Hazel Hipkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn D. Martin; brothers, Joseph Hipkins, Mack and Edward Vanaman.

The funeral was Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. at Wadsworth Church of Christ, Wadsworth, Ohio, with Mr. Jim Duty officiating.

Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Survivors include her children, David G. Martin, Texas, Daniel J. (Kristen) Martin, Buffalo, NY, Stephen D. Martin, Nev., and Suzanne Martin, Louisville; her sister, Nada Hipkins Martin, Stow; and two grandchildren.

Jordan Russell Newsome
Mr. Jordan Russell Newsome, 87, of Savannah died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Candler Hospital.

Mr. Newsome, a native of Warren County, worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp., and then he worked as a homebuilder and general contractor and had been working for Carey Hilliard’s Restaurants for 30 years as maintenance superintendent.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elouise Morris Newsome.

The funeral will be Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Fairhaven Funeral Home, Savannah, with Dr. John Connell and the Rev. Wayne Watts officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. at the Gibson City cemetery with the Rev. Tom Rash officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Gerald Newsome; one daughter, Mrs. Brenda Newsome McKenzie, Savannah; one son, Gaynor and Beth Newsome, Warrenton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-granddaughters; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Lynn Rutherford, Bill Jones, Shawn Smith and Roy Smith.

Fairhaven Funeral Home & Crematory, Savannah, is in charge of the arrangements.

Steven Orwen
Mr. Steven Orwen, 55, of Augusta died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Eisenhower Army Medical Center.

Mr. Orwen, a native of Beatrice, Neb., was retired from the US Navy with over 22 years of service.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Survivors include his children, Carrie Ann Orwen, Justin Robert Orwen, and Megan Esther Orwen; brothers, Robin Orwen and Bruce Orwen; and an aunt, Pearl Kelly.

Poteet Funeral Homes, South Chapel, Augusta, is in charge of the arrangements.

Julian Asberry
Mr. Julian Asberry, 79, of Washington, DC, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007.

Mr. Asberry was the son of the late Willie and Cora Hines, Asberry Batts and Horace Batts Sr. He was predeceased by a brother, Willie Asberry. The funeral was Jan. 9 at the Mt. Airy Baptist Church, Washington, DC. Burial was in the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include a brother, Hosea (Helen) Asberry, Ft. Washington, Md.; nieces and nephews, Deborah A. Hodges, Thomson, David (Linda) Hodges, Washington, DC, Delois Asberry, Wrens, Sgt. Willis Asberry, Wrens, and Lashaon (Elvis) Beach, Ft. Washington, Md.

R.N. Horton Funeral Home, Washington, DC, was in charge of the arrangements.

Willie Asberry
Mr. Willie Asberry, 75, of Wrens died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006.

Mr. Asberry was the son of the late Willie and Cora Hines, Asberry Batts and Horace Batts Sr.

The funeral was Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. at Eden Baptist Church with the Revs. James O. Nelson, Minnie Davis, David Walker, Joe Hills Sr., and Timothy Lewis Sr. officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie D. Hodges; children, Deborah A. Hodges, Thomson, David (Linda) Hodges, Washington, DC, Delois Asberry, Wrens, and Sgt. Willis Asberry, Wrens; brothers, Julian A. Asberry, Washington, DC, and Hosea (Helen) Asberry, Ft. Washington, Md.; and grandchildren, Mercedes, Willis and Jaslyn.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Tom Ballard
Mr. Tom Ballard, 44, of Matthews died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007.

Mr. Ballard was born in Rock Hill, SC, to Betty Jean Lucas Ballard of South Boardman, Mi., and the late Walter Furman Ballard.

Memorial services will be held Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Additional survivors are a stepson, Brandon L. Newsome, Dublin; long-time companion, Lisa Newsome, Zebina; two sisters, Terri (Randy) Askew, Matthews, Sandra (Wayne) Hayes, Blythe; three brothers, Doug (Rosa) Ballard, N.C., Jeff (Georgia) Ballard, Wrens, and Brandon Ballard, Augusta; and numerous nieces and nephews.

DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home, Hephzibah, is in charge of the arrangements.

Archie L. Hall
Mr. Archie L. Hall, 80, of Wadley died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2007.

Mr. Hall was born in Jefferson County and had lived in Wadley for the past 15 years. He was retired from the Department of Transportation, Road Department and was a member of Mintons Chapel Church.

Graveside services were Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. at Coleman’s Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery with the Revs. Wilmer Hall and Wayne Page officiating.

Survivors include a son, Robert L. (Catherine) Hall, Elkton, Fla.; a brother, Rev. Wilmer (Dorothy) Hall, Twin City.

Memorials may be made to the St. Johns United Methodist Church Building Fund in care of Betty Anderson, Wadley, GA 30477.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Marie Chalker Davis
Mrs. Marie Chalker Davis, 100, of Warrenton died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007.

Mrs. Davis, a native of Warren County, was a member of the Warren County Farm Bureau, Adult Ladies Sunday School Class and Magnolia Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband Redmond Davis.

The funeral was Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church with the Revs. Randall Whitaker, Tommy Harwell and Adrian Burrell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her son, Mary Bessie (Charles) Harper, Warrenton; one sister, Bernice Chalker Brooks, Gibson; and adopted family, Tommy, Melanie, Meaghan and Jocelyn Harper.

Pallbearers were David Harper, Dewayne Wood, W.F. Norris, Joe McCommons, Robert H. Davis, Willis Johnson, Dr. Barry Tarpley and Charles Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were Wendell Kitchens, Mike Turner, Allen Gilmer, Charles Tucker, Warren Hart, Louis Swint, Craig Usry, Michael Gilmer, Denton Johnson, Ronnie Hadden and Hollis Chalker.

Lowe Funeral Home, Warrenton, was in charge of the arrangements.

John C. “Jake” Dye
Mr. John C. “Jake” Dye, 89, of Wrens died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Dye was the son of the late Bunyan A. Dye and Brinie D. Dye. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was retired from Ft. Gordon. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Dye and Chester Dye; and two sisters, Ruth Chalker and Melva Smith.

The funeral was Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Dr. James Ford, the Rev. Roy White and the Rev. Race Lariscy officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Dye; two daughters, Diane Dye and Patty (Jim) Merritt, both of Wrens; two sons, Bruce (Cecelia) Dye and Burton (Sharon) Dye, both of Wrens; five sisters, Myrtle Farr, Griffin, Christine Cook, Greenwood, SC, Eleanora Cooper, Jacksonville, Juanita Amerson, Greenwood, SC, and Judy Parrish, Edgefield, SC; a brother, Harold Dye, Augusta; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Billy Dye, Jack Sutton, Terry Englett, Carl Brooks, George Wren, Douglas Morris, Jimmy Mc- Donald and Glenn Bazemore.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, c/o Bobbie Kitchens, 1092 Oak St., Avera, GA 30803.

Miss Mary “Nanny” Bishop Allmond
Miss Mary Bishop Allmond, “Nanny”, 90, of Vidette entered into rest on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville.

Miss Allmond was born June 18, 1919, in Emanuel County. She moved to Vidette in 1985 following her retirement from Joyner Sales in Columbia, S.C. She was a member of Bethel Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Vidette.

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Bethel ARP Church in Vidette, with Rev. J. Roy White officiating. Burial followed at Rose Dhu Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Molly Bishop; daughters and son-in-law, Jean Thomas and Linda and Doran Cartmell; and two great-grandchildren, Geoffery Cartmell and Doran Lee Cartmell III.

Survivors include her son-in-law, John S. Thomas of Vidette; four grandchildren, Bill Cartmell (Carolyn), Susan Homer (Drew) and Lee Cartmell (Bobbi), all of Utah, and John S. “Johnny” Thomas III (Dominee) of Waynesboro; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Carlton Bishop, Bill Cartmell, Lee Cartmell, Drew Homer, Chris Lewis and Johnny Thomas.

Honorary pallbearers were great-grandsons.

Mrs. Donna Blakenship
Mrs. Donna Blakenship of Stapleton entered into rest on Thursday, March 4, 2010.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 8, 2010, at 1 p.m. at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, with Rev. Kenneth Sweat officiating. Internment followed in the Millwood Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Blakenship of Stapleton; daughter, Rebecca (Moses) Halcomb of Lawrenceville; stepsons, Darek (Sara) Blakenship of Braselton, and Larry Blakenship Jr. of Dunwoody; sister, Susan (David) Ewing of Covington; brother, Allen Cook of Covington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. James Clifford Johnson Sr.
Mr. James Clifford Johnson Sr. of Wadley entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, in Augusta.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 5, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Spears Grove Baptist Church in Wadley, with Pastor C.W. Stone officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Pearl Johnson, Wadley; children, James (Linda) Johnson Jr., Jerry (Beverly) Green, Willie Mae (Donald) Brinkley, Patricia (Edward) Riles, Bobbie Jean (Joe) Johnson, Curtis (Tracey) Johnson Sr. and Reggie Johnson, all of Wadley, Lamar (Dedra) Johnson, Byron, and Anthony (Sharon) Williams, Bartow; siblings, Pastor Tommy Lee (Marion) Johnson, Rev. Charlie (Frances) Johnson, Elizabeth Reeves, Nathan (Bula) Johnson and Roman (Ola Mae) Johnson, all of Swainsboro; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tommy (Katherine) Nelson, Hollywood, Fla.; son-in-law, Roosevelt Atkins, Wadley; 23 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Ezee Carter, Gary Harmon, Willie Randall, Lorenzo Stone, Ricky Tarver and William Tarver.

Mrs. Mattie Lee Whigham Jackson
Mrs. Mattie Lee Whigham Jackson, 94, of Savannah entered into rest on Feb. 16, 2010, at home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Jackson was born in Emanuel County on April 5, 1915. She completed her formal high school education in Wadley. She married the late Fred M. Jackson on Jan. 18, 1937, in Jefferson County. They moved to Savannah in 1941.

Funeral and burial services were private.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and three children, Gwendolyn J. McMillan, Louise J. White and Fred E. Jackson.

Survivors include children, Mattie F. Jackson (Alfred) Gray, Greensville, S.C., Dazola Jackson Belle and Cynthia Jackson Formey, both of Savannah, John A. Jackson, Forest Park, and Cyrus J. (Brenda) Jackson, Fayetteville; grandchildren, John Wesley IV and Sonja McMillan, Jeffery and Brian Gray, Katrina B. (Juan) Aponte, Jonise and Kamaria Jackson, Khadija and Akiya Jackson, Turkesha McIvy, and Dionne and Christopher Formey; great-grandchildren, John Wesley V, Jordie and Jarvis McMillan, Maite and Christiana Aponte, Kamden Tift, Brian and Billy Whitfield, and Mario McIvy; siblings, Ola Mae W.
