Mrs. Martha Stone Grove
Mrs. Martha Stone Grove of Wilmington, N.C., entered into rest on Oct. 18, 2010.
Born on Feb. 5, 1923 in Augusta, Mrs. Grove was eldest daughter of William Alexander Stone and Jessie Cheatam Stone of Louisville, where she grew up. She attended Agnes Scott College and in 1943, joined the U.S. Navy Waves (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She was stationed in Miami, Fla., where she met her husband, Lt. Commander Russell Brown Grove who predeceased her in 1974. Lifelong residents of Coconut Grove in Miami, Fla., the Groves were active in business, civic and social affairs including the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, the Viscayans, the Ransom Everglades School and the Lowe Art Museum. She was a member and volunteer of Fairchild Tropical Gardens. Mrs. Grove helped collect and identify tropical seeds and seedlings for many years. She gave many hours of reading to Books for the Blind. A Gray Lady at Jackson Memorial Hospital, she brought books and magazines to patients and children. Her church community was the Chapel of the Venerable Bede. She studied painting and developed a unique primitive yet contemporary style. In 2000, Mrs. Grove left Coconut Grove and moved to Wilmington, N.C., to be near her daughter and family.
Burial services were held on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Francis Memorial Garden of St. James Parish.
Survivors include her sister, Alexa Stone Smith of Farragut, Tenn.; daughters, Martha Grove Williams (Jim) of Wilmington, N.C., and Mallory Grove Harrison of Concord, Mass.; granddaughter, Cameron Williams Uher (Paul) of Charlotte, N.C.; grandsons, William and Alexander Harrison of Concord, Mass.; and great-granddaughter, Julia Cameron Uher of Charlotte, N.C.
Deacon Willie Oscar “Monkey” Armstrong
Deacon Willie Oscar “Monkey” Armstrong of Wadley entered into rest on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, in Augusta.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Brinson Hill Baptist Church in Wadley, with Rev. Dr. David Kemp officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Ve’Ester Tooks Armstrong, Wadley; one son, Kenneth (Willene) Armstrong, Augusta; one grandson, Justin Armstrong, Augusta; four sisters, Annie L. Jenkins, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Johnnie Mae Walden and Florence Bell, Wadley, and Rosie Johnson, Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Ce’Lester (Lenora) Tooks, Wadley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Tony Cummings, Johnny Davis, David Kemp, Jr. Chris Lewis, Joe Lewis and Deacon Willie Randall.

Mr. Gordon Carswell Jr., 83, of Midville entered into rest on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at his residence in the Cross-Green Community.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at noon at Piney Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Hunter Robert Hawkins
Mr. Hunter Robert Hawkins, 83, of Augusta entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at University Hospital.
Mr. Hawkins worked at Yancey Brothers Company for 38 years, where he began in farm equipment sales. He was promoted to mechanics and then worked in road service.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, in the chapel at Thomas Poteet and Son, with Pastor Terry Eubanks officiating. Interment was in the Walden United Methodist Church cemetery in Avera.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Gladys Ann Hawkins.
Survivors include his daughters, Sandra Diane Robertson (Mark) of Martinez, Phyllis Hawkins (Tommy) of Beaufort, S.C., and Deborah McElmurray (Earl) of Hephzibah; sons, Robert Hawkins (Patty) of Hephzibah, and Mark Hawkins of Evans; sisters, Etta Taylor and Elizabeth Amerson; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Willie James Ivery
Mr. Willie James Ivery, 71, of Louisville entered into rest at his residence on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010.
Mr. Ivery was born in Avera, Jefferson County, to the late John Ivery and Lizzie Mae Tremble Ivery. He was a member of Sand Valley AME Church, where he served until he moved to Queens, N.Y. He received his education from Tennille Grove School in Avera. He lived several of his adult years in Louisville and later relocated to Queens, N.Y., for more than 30 years, where he was employed as a registered licensed security guard with the State of New York. He returned home to Louisville to be with his family and friends when he retired.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Baptist Church and Cemetery, Louisville, with Pastor Rev. Carl Simmons as the eulogist and Minister James Ivery presiding.
Survivors include his wife, Lenoria “Nita” Ivery of Augusta; children, Terry (Katherine) Gibbons of Louisville, and Donell Gore of Jamaica Queens, N.Y.; three sisters, Evelyn Hilton of St. Petersburg, Fla., Elouise Williams of Mount Dora, Fla., and Maggie Wright of Augusta; three sister-in-laws, Essie Mae Thompson, Emma Smith and Mildred Washington of Louisville; grandchildren; Ashley Gibbons, Jayla Gibbons, Sharnice Boatwright, Kateshia Gibbons, Katerral Gibbons and Yolanda Hall all of Louisville; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mr. Bobby Ray Jones Sr.
Mr. Bobby Ray Jones Sr., 72, of Stillmore entered into rest on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at his residence after an extended illness.
Mr. Jones was a native of Emanuel County. He served in the United States Army and was a member of Stillmore Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home at Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at 11 a.m. Burial was in the Warren cemetery in Stillmore.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Ola Mae (Sutton) Jones; brothers, Ben Jones, Robert Lee “Fuzz” Jones, Gordon “Boot” Jones, and Clarence “Punk” Jones; sister, Betty Akridge; and grandson, Willie Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Jones; sons, Bobby “Skipper” Jones of Stilson, Bobby Ray Jones Jr. of Stillmore, Jimbo (Renee) Akridge of Stillmore, and Roy Lee Jones of Stillmore; daughters, Vicki Jones of Oak Park, Jennifer (Paul) Burke of Garfield, and Shirley (Kevin) Scarboro of Stillmore; brothers, Gene Jones of McCormick, S.C., and Bill Jones of Swainsboro; sisters, Willene Newman of Swainsboro, Wanda Bird of Stillmore, and Nita Partridge of Louisville; and 16 grandchildren.

Mr. Aubrey Jackson Ledger Sr.
Mr. Aubrey Jackson Ledger Sr., 83, of Bartow entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, in the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, Augusta.
Mr. Ledger was born Dec. 1, 1926, in Andersonville, a son of the late Daniel Jackson and Pauline Aycock Ledger. He was a United States Air Force World War II veteran, a farm manager and ginner for Bryants Inc., and member of Bartow Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Church Clerk.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, in the Bartow Baptist Church, with Rev. Paul Harris officiating. Burial followed in the family plot in the Bartow City Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris Ann Rachels Ledger; and a sister, Martha Sparks.
Survivors include his son, Aubrey Jackson Ledger Jr., Lincolnton; daughters, Carol Ann Ledger, Bartow, and Fran L. Stanley, Louisville; brothers, John Dan (Nelle) Ledger, New Smyra Beach, Fla., Paul (Sarah) Ledger, Bartow, and Ralph (Diana) Ledger, Maryland; sisters, Christine McGlamry, Americus, Barbara (Lynwood) Cox, Dry Branch, Mary Fincher, Fort Smith, Ark., and Polly Kendrick, Seguin, Texas; grandchildren, Stephen (Laura) Stanley, Augusta, and Jennifer (Jonathan) Herring, Louisville; great-grandson, Wyatt Jackson Stanley, Augusta; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. James William Walden
Mr. James William Walden, 90, of Matthews entered into rest on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at Trinity Hospital of Augusta.
Born to the late Zephyr Stapleton Walden and the late Ernest Walden, Mr. Walden was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County and a member of Mt. Moriah UMC. He served his country as a torpedo pilot in the Navy during WWII. Mr. Walden worked at Barrow and Prescott for over 50 years, helping local farmers and teaching agriculture and Sunday school.
Funeral services were held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, with Rev. Joe B. Walden officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nell Barrow Walden; and brother, Edward Merrill “Bunk” Walden.
Survivors include his two children, Lynn W. Williams, and Joe B. Walden (Karen); a sister, Frances W. Dnistran; an “adopted” sister, Dot Denny Barrow; four grandchildren, John Walden Williams (Pam), Jennifer Walden Chance (Timmy), Laice Walden Newman (Lee) and J. Barrow Walden Jr. (Amanda); and 12 great-grandchildren, Erika Williams, Blythe Rodgers, Luke Rodgers, Bethany Rodgers, Rebekah Chance, Caleb Newman, Jacob Newman, Lydia Newman, Bree Walden, Treb Walden, Nathan Chance and Rachel Chance.

Mr. Willie Lee “John” Boatwright
Mr. Willie Lee “John” Boatwright of Wrens, entered into rest on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation in Gibson.
Mr. Boatwright was born on Nov. 13, 1952, to the late Robert and Sarah Olmon Boatwright. He attended school in Jefferson County. He was employed by Glit Corporation. He joined Walden Grove Baptist Church at an early age. He later moved his membership to Harts Grove in Stapleton.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Harts Grove Baptist Church, Stapleton, with Rev. Dr. Willie L. Jones officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two children, Staff Sgt. Mrs. Jessie Mae Dixon Brown
Mrs. Jessie Mae Dixon Brown of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
Mrs. Brown was the wife of the late Deacon David C. Brown. Mrs. Brown was educated in the public schools of Richmond County. Upon graduation from college Mrs. Brown began her teaching career in Jefferson County. Her teaching career spanned a total of 40 years. She was a supporter of the Paine College Alumni Association and a member of the Richmond County Retired Teachers Association. She was a longtime member of First Shiloh Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, in Gilbert Lambuth Chapel-Paine College, with Rev. Brennan Francois presiding and Rev. Nathaniel Irvin Sr. officiating. Interment was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.

Mr. Clarence Clifton Darlington, 66, entered into rest on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, in his home surrounded by family.
Mr. Darlington was a member of the VFW Post 649 and the American Legion Post 178. He was a Vietnam veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart.
A joint memorial service was held at VFW Post 649 on Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at 2 p.m. for Mr. Darlington and his wife, Lynda L. Darlington, with Dr. Kevin Steele officiating.
Mr. Darlington was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Lynda L. Darlington; and his parents.
Survivors include his children, Clarence C. (Julie) Darlington of Augusta, Mary C. (Andy) Thornton of Augusta, and Edward A. (Carla) Darlington of Gibson; additional survivors, Dominic and Alisha Sagen of New Port News, Va., Clarence C. and Christina Darlington of Augusta, Shawn M. Sagen, Jesse A. Sagen, Lynda M.
