Mrs. Sara Turner Hood
Mrs. Sara Turner Hood, 88, of Tennille entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at the Washington County Extended Care Facility.
Mrs. Hood was born Aug. 26, 1922, to the late John and Dessie Mae Arrington Turner of Macon. She was a member of the Tennille Women’s Club and the Oconee Valley Iris Club. She attended Ohoopee Baptist Church for more than 60 years, singing in the choir and caring for many of its longstanding members. She also worked more than 30 years of work at various stores in downtown Tennille, notably at Hartley’s 5 and 10.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Ohoopee Baptist Church in Tennille, with Rev. Paul Melton officiating. Burial followed at Zeta cemetery in Tennille.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Lewis Frazier and Calvin Rhodes; and brother, Binion Turner.
Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Thomas Hood of Tennille; two sons, Larry (Susan) Frazier of Smyrna, and John (Marjorie) Frazier of Brooklet; three stepsons, Ronald Rhodes, William Lee Rhodes and Terry Rhodes, all of Tennille; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Hart of Tennille; a sister, Doris Moore of Wrens; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Frank) Hill of Atlanta, Leigh Frazier of Athens, and Kevin Frazier of Atlanta; and great-grandchild, Lillie Frazier Hill.
Pallbearers were Kevin Frazier, Jimmy Lewis, Greg Seals, Charles Shurling, A.W. Smith, Bobby Smith and Johnny Wiles.

Mr. Bernard “Nard” Samuel Johnson
Mr. Bernard “Nard” Samuel Johnson, 62, of Wrens entered into rest on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010.
Mr. Johnson was born on Friday, Aug. 20, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was the oldest of three children born to Charlie Johnson and Willie Ruth Stapleton Holmes. He served in the Army for 2 1/2 years.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Harts Grove Baptist Church, Stapleton, with Pastor Rev. Dr. Willie L. Jones officiating. Interment was in Stone Springfield AME Church Cemetery, Stapleton.
He was preceded in death by his son, Bernard S. Johnson; father, Charlie Johnson Jr.; grandfather, Charlie Johnson; grandmother, Essie Pearl Johnson; and brother, Charlie A. “Big Charlie” Johnson.
Survivors include his mother, Willie Ruth Holmes; sister, Patricia Johnson; niece, Shunae “Shay” Beasley, all of Augusta; companion for more than 20 years, Barbara Drayton, Wrens; and host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Cecil J. “Johnnny” Johnson
Mr. Cecil J. “Johnny” Johnson of Fayetteville entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010.
A Memorial service will be held in Fayetteville, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at National Heights Baptist Church, where Mr. Johnson was a member.
Mr. Johnson was born in Wrens, on Sept. 16, 1921, and was the youngest of 11 children. He was a longtime resident of Evans, and more recently Fayetteville. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving in the Pacific theatre aboard a seaplane. His plane spotted the Japanese fleet during WWII and he was awarded a Presidential Citation. He later served in the Korean War. He was employed by Southern Bell for over 38 years, retiring in 1978.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, Rev. Warren Huddleston officiating. Interment was at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Amilee Victoria (Vicky) Gantt Johnson; daughter, Gail (Don) Nelson; sons, C. James (Pat) Johnson Jr. and C Ronnie (Carolyn) Taylor; grandchildren, Lori N. (Tommy) Paterson, Jared L. (Kim) Nelson, Tara L. Nelson, Meredith L. Johnson and Ronda Taylor; great-grandchildren, Justin Taylor, Thomas Paterson and Ainsley Paterson; and other family members.

Mr. Julius “J.” Long
Mr. Julius “J.” Long, 87, of Macon entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, in a local hospital.
Mr. Long was the son of the late Thomas Calvin Long and Nannie Varnell Long. He was born in Flora, Miss., and was a graduate of Mississippi State University and Atlanta School of Law. Mr. Long was a U. S. Army veteran and was a claims adjuster retired from Cotton States Insurance. He was of the Baptist faith.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at Bethany Cemetery, Wadley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Clifford Long.
Survivors include his stepsons, Bill (Nancy) Raines of Macon, and Jed (Anissa) Raines of Brooks; grandchildren, Amber Raines, William Raines, Cole Raines, Sydney Raines and John Raines; two sisters, Virginia Bush and Inez Long, both of Clinton, Miss.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to their charity of choice.

Deacon Willie “Bill” Spann entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Graveside services were held on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Pineola Church of God cemetery in Wadley at noon, with Elder Ronnie Harden officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Spann, Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Vivian (Carl) Bradford, Jacksonville, Fla., Rose (Ernie) Saxton, Atlanta, and Marion Gaynor, Sandersville; two sons, Alfred Spann and Barney (Darlene) Spann, Jacksonville, Fla.; four sisters, Hattie Elmore, Wadley, Dorothy Smythe, Peekskill, N.Y., Lessie Spann, Boston, Mass., and Carolyn Gamble, Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, Henry (C’Ollie) Spann Jr., Wadley, Jasper (Mary) Spann, Long Island, N.Y., and Booker T. Mr. Sammie Lee Stone
Mr. Sammie Lee Stone entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at Unihealth Post-Acute Care of Old Capitol, Louisville.
Mr. Stone was born on Oct. 27, 1942, in Stapleton to the late Henry Stone and Lonnie B. Russ. He joined Stone Springfield AME Church at an early age and attended the Jefferson County School System. He was employed by the city of Wrens, where he was a maintenance worker. He also worked at Air Balance as a sheet metal worker for more than 26 years.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Freeman Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Willie Jackson officiating. Interment was in Stone Springfield AME Church Cemetery, Stapleton.

Mr. Robert Evans
Mr. Robert Evans, 86, of Midville entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Evans, born in Jefferson County, had lived in Midville for the past 58 years.
He was a member of the Midville United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years and was the Sunday School Superintendent. He was mayor of Midville for 20 years, a member of the Burke County Board of Education, The National Cotton Council, Midville Lions Club, the Georgia Department of Defense, and the Georgia National Guard. He was retired from Fulghum Industries, and a Captain in the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Midville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Tony Smith and Rev. Terry Joyner officiating. Interment followed in the Midville Cemetery.
Survivors include his children, Donna Chandler (Jerry), Robert E. Evans Jr. (Jackie), George Evans (Nancy), and Ann Evans; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Miss Betty Louise Humphrey
Miss Betty Louise Humphrey, 87, of Sandersville entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at Washington County Regional Medical Center.?
Miss Humphrey was born in Washington County, the daughter of the late Charlie Daniel Humphrey and the late Odie Lee Cobb Humphrey. She served as the Washington County Tax Commissioner, being elected in 1975 and retiring in 1998.?Prior to her service in the tax office, she worked as a sheriff’s deputy for Sheriff Euree Curry and returned to the Sheriff’s Office as receptionist for Sheriff Thomas Smith in retirement.?She was a longtime member of the Davisboro Baptist Church and at her death was a member of the Ridgeland Heights Baptist Church.?She sang at numerous venues during her lifetime.?She was the last living member of the original Humphrey Family Singers.?She was a member of the Washington County Pilot Club and the Woodmen of the World.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Davisboro Baptist Church, with Rev. L.T. Logue and Rev. Bill Moody officiating. Burial was in the Davisboro City Cemetery.?

Miss Annie Maude Johnson
Miss Annie Maude Johnson entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Sunrise Assisted Living, Washington, D.C.
Miss Johnson was born in Stapleton on Dec. 17, 1919. She was the fifth child born to the late Clarence and Margaret Farmer Johnson. She graduated from William Penn High School in High Point, N.C., and moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the federal government for a short period. Before coming to Washington, D.C., she was a member of Springfield AME Church, Stapleton, and a member of Pearson Memorial AME Church, High Point, N.C. She was a member of Brown Memorial AME Church, serving in the capacity as a Stewardess and a member of the Nurses Unit. She was a member until her illness. She graduated from Homer G. Phillips School of Nursing in St. Louis, Mo., and earned her bachelor of science degree in clinical nursing from The Catholic University, Washington, D.C. She worked at Howard University Hospital and D.C. General. She also did private duty nursing. She retired from The Department of Human Services in 1984. She was a member of the Catholic University Alumnae and a member of The National Association of Registered Nurses.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Stone Springfield AME Church Cemetery, Stapleton.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Ray Simmons, Carrie E. Cason and Clara L. Smith.
Survivors include two sisters, Gussie B. Robinson, High Point, N.C., and Marie W. McDowell, Washington, D.C.; nieces, Brenda (Richard) Hughes and Vernita (Kenneth) Johnson; and nephew, Richard O. (Benita) Hughes Jr.; and many other nieces, nephews and relatives.

Mr. Coley L. Padgett Jr.
Mr. Coley L. Padgett Jr., 72, of Lincolnton entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Padgett, son of the late Coley Sr. and Lucille Johnson Padgett was a native of Jefferson County, but had lived in Augusta most of his life. He retired from Enterprise Mill as a loom supervisor after 38 years of service. Following retirement, he coached Richmond County Recreation Department football, basketball and baseball. For this service, he was honored by the Optimist Club as Outstanding Youth Service Man of the Year. Afterwards, he moved to Lincolnton in 1985, and operated C&J; Cruise and Tours until 2004 when he became disabled. Mr. Padgett was a poet and member of Word of Life Church.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Word of Life Church, Appling. Interment followed at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.
