Mr. John T. “Jake” Barrow
Mr. John T. “Jake” Barrow, 90, of Wrens entered into rest on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at the Burke Medical Center.
Mr. Barrow was one of 10 children born to the late Lillian Estelle Dukes and Henry B. Barrow and was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. He was a retired dairy farmer.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010, in the James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Ed Chance officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Erlene Gay Barrow; daughter, Shirley Ann Vickery; brothers, George P. Barrow, Robert Lee Barrow, Loren H. Barrow, Eben Barrow, Oliver E. Barrow and Thomas J. Barrow; and his sister, Sallie B. Thigpen.
Survivors include his three sons, John Carter Barrow (Ollie) Hephzibah, Larry Lamar Barrow and David Eugene Barrow; son-in-law, Floyd Vickery Jr., Waynesboro; two sisters, Mary B. Gay and Fannie B. Windom; three grandchildren, John C. Barrow III, Floyd Vickery III, and Kimberly Vickery; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers were John C. Barrow III, Floyd Vickery III, Larry Kitchens, Jimmy Prescott, Richard Prescott and Walter Prescott.

Mr. Max Dixon
Mr. Max Dixon, 75, of Stapleton entered into rest on July 12, 2010 at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation.
Mr. Dixon was born in Avera, and was the son of the late John Thomas Dixon and the late Inez May Dixon. He was retired as a heavy equipment operator from the Georgia Department of Transportation after 33 years of service.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating. Interment followed at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his daughter, Lisa Tyree (Dennis) of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; stepchildren, Angela Hochell, Thomson, Wilbur Thigpen, Thomson, Wynette Zilinski, Deland, Fla., and Albert Sheppard, Canton; brothers, Lewis Dixon, Avera, Bill Dixon, Allan, Okla.; sister, Edith Poteet, Augusta; grandson, Steve Cochran; numerous step-grandchildren; and friend, Shirley Dye.
Pallbearers were Lee Thigpen, Travis Rabun, Bill Bonner, Jimmy Newsome, Joshua Withrow and James “Ted” Cooper.

Mr. Robert Samuel “Mac” McCleskey
Mr. Robert Samuel “Mac” McCleskey, 88, entered into rest on Sunday, July 11, 2010, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Mr. McCleskey was born on July 7, 1922, in Wrens, to Robert Samuel and Lucille McCleskey. He graduated from Erskine College in Due West, S.C., and attended Military Academy at Annapolis before serving in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in Mobile, Ala., and later on Guam. He was a school teacher and coach at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, and he retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance after 27 years of service. He was an active member of Parkway Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at Parkway Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Alice.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Elsie Upchurch McCleskey; grandchildren, Robert (Lindsay) Masone, Samuel Masone, Amanda (Ryan) Masone Hosenfeld; five great-grandchildren, Payton, Mac, Bryce, Alice and Gabriel; sister, Ceil Parrish of Wrens; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund at Parkway Presbyterian Church.

Mr. David Wayne Mercer
Mr. David Wayne Mercer entered into rest on Thursday, July 1, 2010.
Mr. Mercer was born Feb. 7, 1967, in Forsyth. He was employed with Ready Pac and was a graduate of Mary Persons High School.
Funeral services were held July 3, 2010, at New Beginning Pentecostal Church, Rev. Darrell Corbin officiating. Burial was in Juliette Baptist Church Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Mae Mercer; and brother, Brantley Langston.
Survivors include his wife, Monica Poole Mercer; children, Preston Chance, Jared Chance and Jesse Chance of Forsyth; father, Herbert Lee Mercer of Juliette; sisters, Nora Mercer of Juliette, Cathy Adams of Forsyth, and Angie Lester of High Falls.

Mr. Tommy Clayton Moates
Mr. Tommy Clayton Moates, 61, of Wrens entered into rest on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at the University Hospital.
Mr. Moates was born to the late Carrie Cornelia Welch Moates Davis and Clayton Moates. He was a life-long resident of Jefferson County.
Survivors include his long-time companion, Polly L. Jeffers.
Mr. Willie Lee “Junior” Oliver
Mr. Willie Lee “Junior” Oliver, 65, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, July 15, 2010.
Mr. Oliver was a native of Screven County and served 22 years in the United States Army, serving in both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
Memorial services with full military honors were held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. at the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Oliver; parents, William Randall Oliver and Inez Howell.
Survivors include his sister, Janie Hobbs of Augusta; brothers, Kelly Oliver of Augusta, J.L. Lynch of Augusta, and Joe Lynch of North Augusta, S.C.; stepsister, Joan Crosby of Baxley; stepbrothers, William Howell of Thomson, and Terry Howell of Gibson; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Evelyn Simpson Pennington
Mrs. Evelyn Simpson Pennington, 88, of Augusta entered into rest on Monday, July 12, 2010, at Doctors Hospital.
Mrs. Pennington was a battery filler with King Mill and was a Baptist.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 16, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors, with Rev. Charlie Benson and Rev. Victor Jason officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Matthews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Pennington.
Survivors include her sons, James E. Brooks Sr. and Barrett Pennington; daughters, Edith Jason and Shirley Legrand; stepdaughter, Hazel Merchant, Saluda, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons and great-grandsons.

Mr. Elton Vernon Raley
Mr. Elton Vernon Raley, 86, of Sandersville entered into rest on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Washington County Regional Medical Center in Sandersville.
Mr. Raley was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late John Frank Raley Sr. and the late Mattie Belle Black Raley. He was a farmer and the owner of Raley’s Grain Elevator. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. Mr. Raley was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Sandersville, with burial in the Brownwood cemetery in Sandersville.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Welch Raley of Sandersville; two daughters, Marilyn Marie Raley Mesler (Gary) of Milledgeville, and Roseanne Raley Chambers (Jimmy Jr.) of Sandersville; two sons, Benjamin Elton Raley (Carol) of Sandersville, and Frank Vernon Raley (Whitney) of Davisboro; eight grandchildren, Stacey Mesler, Leah Mesler, Wynn Raley, Graham Raley, Anna Grace Raley, Brittany Raley, Chelsey Raley and Kara Raley; a brother, Melvin G. Mr. George Edmund Burke Sr.
Mr. George Edmund Burke Sr., 80, of Kingstree, S.C., entered into rest on Sunday, July 18, 2010.
Mr. Burke was born in Augusta on Nov. 24, 1929, a son of the late Paul and Lilly Jarrett Burke. He was a charter member of Kingstree Presbyterian Church; served in the Air Force during the Korean War, 1950-1954; was past adjutant and finance officer of American Legion Post No. 8; a hospice volunteer for 12 years; and worked 38 years as a salesman for Jarrett Specialty Company in Kingstree.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, in the Kingstree Presbyterian Church, with burial following in Kingstree Memorial Gardens.

Mr. July Ceafus “J.C.” Carr Sr., 66, of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, July 23, 2010, at a local hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010, at 3 p.m. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and Louisville City Cemetery.
Mr. Carr was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Comer Carr Sr. and Willie Florence Hines Carr. He attended the Jefferson County School System, and retired in 2003 as a welder at Thermo King Corporation and was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include his children, July Ceafus Carr Jr., Wanda Carr-Martin, Steven Raphael Carr and Tamara (Bobby) Lewis, all of Louisville, Geary Leon Carr of Millen, Maquishe Carr of Sandersville; siblings, Annie Laws and Frances (Charlie) Thompson, all of Trenton, N.J., and Joyce (Calvin) Adams of St. Petersburg, Fla.; children that he held dear to his heart, Johnathan Daniels, Romonica Daniels, Connery Hadden, Bridget Cunningham, Derrick Hadden and Catina Cunningham; one sister-in-law, Betty Gibbons Carr of Louisville; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; and friends, Tom Fields and Homer Brown Jr.

Miss Marilyn Landry of Orlando, Fla., entered into rest on Thursday, July 1, 2010, in Florida.
Miss Landry was born May 26, 1960, in New York to the late Wilbur Landry and Mary Lue Gilmore Landry. She was raised in Louisville. She attended and graduated from Jefferson County High School and later moved to Orlando, Fla., in 1991.

Mr. Frank Herman Mahnks, 88, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Louisville entered into rest on June 12, 2010.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010, in the Louisville City Cemetery. The Mahnks family will receive friends following the service.
Mr. Mahnks was born on Dec. 21, 1921, in Tonowando, N.Y., a son of the late Frank Herman and Sally Walden Mahnks. He was an Army veteran serving in World War II, and had worked as a self-employed brick mason for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Herman and Sally Walden Mahnks; two brothers, Walter and Norman Mahnks; two sisters, Elsie Church and Dorothy Resinger.
Survivors include his sons, Bart Mahnks (Karina) of Omaha, Neb., and Daniel Mahnks (Mary) of Medway, Mass.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
