Mrs. Florence K. Downs
Mrs. Florence K. Downs, 101, of Mitchell entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Downs was a native and lifelong resident of Glascock County and was a daughter of the late Henry and Dorinda Kitchens. She worked at Raley’s Restaurant as a cook, and was a member of Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church for more than 60 years.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church, with Rev. T.F. Yawn, Rev. Al Kurtz and Rev. Jacky Downs officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Horace Downs; daughter, Betty Downs Logue; two sisters; and four brothers.
Survivors include her son, Thomas (Carol) R. Downs of Mitchell; five grandchildren, Joseph Brinson (Judy Logue), Charles (Mary Jo) Logue, Brenda (Gary) Floyd, Alecia (Don) Hilson and Melissa (Darrell) High; five great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Phil Raley, Bill Raley, Charles Roberts Sr., Jimmy Newsome, Jacky Haywood and Derrell Usry.
Honorary Pallbearers were Roy Black, Marvin Fendley, Joe Dean Usry, Virgie Kitchens, Ralph Kelley and Jimmy Kelley.

Mrs. Christine Wilson Hanley
Mrs. Christine Wilson Hanley, 87, of Louisville entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at Jefferson Hospital.
Mrs. Hanley, a native of Jefferson County, was the daughter of the late Mark and Mary Sally Cooper Watkins. She was a waitress for Pansy’s Restaurant for many years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Louisville for 10 years.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Mitch Vaughn officiating. Burial followed in the Louisville City Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Bobbie W. Poole, Hattie W. Hodges, Nina W. Eubanks, Ruby W. Hartley and Ruth W. Horn; and brothers, Everette Watkins and Franklin Watkins.
Survivors include her son, Billy R. Wilson of Louisville; daughter, Sandra Wilson Clarke of Louisville; sister, Frances Jones; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Patricia G. Holton, 51, of Thomson entered into rest on Sept. 19, 2012, at her residence.
Mrs. Holton was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County. She was an LPN for Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at Little Briar Creek Baptist Church, with Dr. Randy Dunaway officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Eve Guy Jr.; and brother, Roger Wayne Guy.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Holton, Thomson; two sons, Michael (Melissa) McGrotha, Thomson, and Joseph (April McGill) McGrotha, Thomson; three sisters, Faye Guy, Lynda (Dave) Lucas and Carol Ann (Terry) Hayes; two brothers, David O. (Charlotte) Guy and David S. Guy; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Stanley May, 57, of Macon entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012.

Mr. Cecil D. “Stick” Smith
Mr. Cecil D. “Stick” Smith of Warrenton entered into rest on Sept. 17, 2012.
Mr. Smith was born on Oct. 23, 1923, to Eva and David Smith. He was a resident of Warren County and a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church, Mitchell. He served in World War II as a technician fourth grade in the 1897 Engineer Battalion. He served as a combination welder in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines, working with Navy Seabees constructing air strips. For his service, he was awarded the American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with three bronze stars, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, WWII Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He served in the Philippines during the Battle of Leyte and was in Japan at the time of surrender. After being discharged from the service, Cecil owned and operated a trucking company for more than 65 years.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at Mill Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Clifton Drawdy officiating.
He was preceded in death by wife, Marian J. Smith; second wife, Doris Elizabeth Smith; sister, Ruby Linde; brothers, John T. Smith and James L. Smith; and twin siblings, Allen and Alice Smith.
Survivors include his son, Sonny Smith (Kathy) of Warrenton; daughters, Starr Crawford of Grovetown, and Jeannie Rushing (Derrell) of Warrenton; sisters, Barbara Cornelison and Helen Braun of Lilburn, and Faye Marshall of Athens; grandchildren, Pam Howard, Thomson, Marilyn Allen, Augusta, Zach Smith, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Chris Rushing, Dearing; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Miss Grace Braddy
Miss Grace Braddy entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Washington County Hospital.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark AME Church, Wadley. Burial will be in the Braddy Family Cemetery.
Miss Braddy was a native of Jefferson County, the daughter of Elijah and Roxie Seay Braddy. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill AME Church, Bartow. Miss Braddy left her rural community school and went on to graduate high school at T.J. Elder Training School, Sandersville. Following her graduation from high school, she continued her education at the former Georgia State College, now Savannah State University, Savannah. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She later earned a masters’ degree from Atlanta University. Following her graduation from college, Miss Braddy embarked on a career in education that spanned more than 60 years. She began her career at the Booker T. Washington School, Bartow. She retired from Carver Elementary, Wadley. Her entire career was spent in the Jefferson County School System. In her retirement, Miss Braddy became a Pink Lady at Jefferson Hospital, and was a substitute teacher. She held membership in the Louisville Chapter No. 101 Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by seven siblings.
Survivors include her sister, Lillian Brockington; niece, Lucille Lewis of Stapleton; godson, Engle Hunter of Ellerslie; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, great-great-great-nieces, great-great-great- nephews and others; friends, Odelia Baker, Pecolia Jackson, Georgia Hunter, Lula Tarver, Julia Wells and Yvonne Fann.

Mr. Robert Lee Burley Jr. of Swainsboro entered into rest on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, in Wadley.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Pineola Church of God, Wadley. Burial was in Oak Park Cemetery, Emanuel County.
Survivors include one brother, Eddie (Leatha) Burley, Swainsboro; one sister, Emma L. Williams, Atlanta; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; two aunts; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Miss Frances Davis
Miss Frances Davis, 81, of Martinez entered into rest on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Doctors Hospital.
Miss Davis was a native of Glascock County, was the daughter of the late J.B. (Buddy) and Essie Newsome Davis, she graduated from Glascock County School, and worked for the Richmond County tax office, and retired from Fort Gordon Civil Service and was a member of the Sanctuary Church, Martinez.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Johnson Methodist Church, Warrenton, with Rev. Bryan Cockrell and Rev. Earl Thompson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Billy Davis.
Survivors include her sister, Sara Braden of Lincolnton; brothers, Jack Davis of Augusta, and Bobby Davis of Warrenton; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Arnold Wood, Esten Usry, Donald Kent, Charles Harper, Jeff Davis and Kenneth Norris.

Miss Elizabeth “Oma” Fields
Miss Elizabeth “Oma” Fields entered into rest on Nov. 7, 2012.
Miss Fields was born in Jefferson County on Feb. 2, 1945, to the late Lacy and Pecolia Warthen Fields. She became a member of Ebenezer CME Church at a very early age. She received her education in the Jefferson County School System. She moved to New York several years ago and resided there until her death.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Faith Memorial CME Church, Louisville, with Rev. Vernon White officiating.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Johnny Fields, Tommie Fields, Luke Fields, L.J. Fields, Robert Fields, Cora Flournoy, Lottie Marie Wells, Ruby Mountain, Frances Dixon, Cleo Atkins and Colizza Fields.
Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Washington (Antony) of Lorton, Va., Glenda Fields and Carolyn Whigham of Bartow; brother, Mack Fields of Bartow; sisters, Vasthi Jordan of Louisville, Betty Fields and Annie Carter (Nick), Rose Prince of Bronx, N.Y., and Martha Brown of Bartow; friend, Annie Flournoy of Bartow; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Terrence Jamal “Scooter” Flournoy
Mr. Terrence Jamal “Scooter” Flournoy entered into rest on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012.
Mr. Flournoy was born in Richmond County, Augusta, on Aug. 10, 1987, to Carolyn Flournoy and Eugene Tarver. He was a member of Faith Memorial CME Church, and a 2007 graduate of Jefferson County High School. Mr. Flournoy received a certificate for truck drivers and welding from Sandersville Technical College. He was employed with Jeff Power Trucking.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Faith Memorial CME Church, Louisville, with Rev. Vernon White officiating. Interment was in Live Oak Cemetery, Wadley.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert Lee and Eutine Tarver.

Mr. D.C. Hughes Jr.
Mr. D.C. Hughes Jr., 95, of Thomson entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Hughes was born in Glascock County on July 23, 1917, to David and Annie Mae Hughes, but has made his home in Thomson for most of his life. He was a graduate of Young Harris College and later served on the Board of Trustees. He was an English teacher, an Explorer Scout leader and operated his own photography business. He was a charter member of Thomson Country Club, where he served as president and treasurer. He was a former Thomson City Councilman and McDuffie County Commissioner. He was a Master Mason, member of A.J. Miller Lodge 204, Thomson, and a Shriner, member of the ALEE Temple and Thomson Shrine Club. He was a past president of the Thomson Exchange Club. He was a member of Thomson First Baptist Church, where he taught the 13 and 14 year-old boys’ Sunday school class, and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. He was the retired owner and operator of Thomson Construction Supply Company.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Thomson First Baptist Church, with Rev. Josh Hughes and Rev. David Lambert officiating. Burial was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia H. Hughes.
Survivors include his daughter, Kay (Ken) Williams, Thomson; son, Dr. Carroll (Linda) Hughes, Thomson; three brothers, Robert (Elizabeth) Hughes, George Odis Hughes and Gene (Jane) Hughes, all of Thomson; six grandchildren, Matt Hughes, Rev. Josh (Ginger) Hughes, Dr. Katie Hughes ( Dr. Jeremy) Anthony, John (Mary Margeret) Williams, Michael (Caroline) Williams and David (Katie) Williams; and two great- grandchildren, Julia Anthony and Ella Grace Hughes.
