Mr. Frederick Chamlee “Fred” Evans Jr.
Mr. Frederick Chamlee “Fred” Evans Jr., 68, of Bartow entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011.
Mr. Evans was born in Washington County and was a lifelong resident of Bartow. He was the son of the late Frederick C. Evans Sr. and the late Julia Bryant Evans. Mr. Evans was a graduate of Wadley High School in Wadley in 1960, Roanoke College in Roanoke, Va., in 1965, and the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in Macon in 1968. He was the owner and operator of Bryant’s Inc., and the longest serving member of the Bartow City Council, being elected in 1970 and serving until his death. Mr. Evans served on the Board of Directors of the Queensborough National Bank and Trust Company, the Queensborough Holding Company and the Louisville Storage and Loan Company. He was a lifelong member of the Bartow Baptist Church, and a member of the Georgia Cattleman’s Association, the Cotton Growers and the Cotton Ginners Associations.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Bartow Baptist Church, Bartow, with Rev. Paul Harris officiating.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Marjorie Hodges Evans of Bartow; daughter, Mary Evans Kirk (Danny) of Wadley; sons, Frederick C. Evans III (Jennifer) of Vidalia, and Robert Warthen Evans Sr. (Julie) of Wadley; grandchildren, Will and Lexi Kirk, Rebecca and Chamlee Evans, and Warthen and Cameron Evans; sister, Mary Evans Brantley (Marvin) of Atlanta; a step-granddaughter, Kim Kirk Johnson (Michael); and step-great-grandsons, Slade and Trey Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers were the Board of Directors of Queensborough National Bank and Trust Company, employees of Bryant’s Inc. and Bartow City Council Members.

Funeral services for Mrs. Walton Louise Brown Freeman, 100, of Thomson, formerly of Wrens, were held on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at noon at Wrens Chapel AME Church, Wrens, with Pastor Rev. Carlos T. Young as eulogist and Rev. Bettye J. Stephens presiding.
Mrs. Freeman was a retired educator and licensed funeral director.

Mr. James E. “Jim” Horton
Mr. James E. “Jim” Horton, 78, of Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011.
A native of Cedartown, Mr. Horton moved to Louisville in 1969 and was the former owner and publisher of The News and Farmer and the Wadley Herald, and The Jefferson Reporter newspapers, and was a member of Louisville First Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at Louisville First Baptist Church, with Rev. Hardy Owens and Rev. Larry Montgomery officiating. Burial followed in Louisville City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lettye Sue Horton; a daughter, Terry (Steve) Green; two granddaughters, Jana and Julie, all of Louisville; one grandson, Jason (Rachel); and one great-grandson, Cade, all of Athens; two brothers, William “Buddy” Horton of Carrollton, and Robert “Bobby” Horton of Cedartown; and several nieces and nephews.

Sgt. Mike Johnson
Sgt. Mike Johnson, 60, of Sardis entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011.
He was born on Dec. 28, 1950, in Louisville to the late Cleveland and Margaret Johnson. He was a law enforcement officer since he was 21, following in his family’s chosen career. He retired from Waynesboro Police Department in March of 2010, after 17 years with the department. He returned to law enforcement as a Bailiff with the Burke County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of Spring Branch Sportsman Club.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home, with Chaplain William E. Sexton officiating.

Mrs. Mary Bessie Osborne Norris, 83, of Davisboro entered into rest on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville.
Mrs. Norris was a native of Glascock County, and the daughter of the late William Osborne and the late Mary Lou Raley Osborne. She was the wife of the late Cecil Calvin Norris. Mrs. Norris was a homemaker and a member of the Downs Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at White Oak Methodist Church, with Rev. Dewey Henderson officiating. Burial was in Downs Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include daughter, Rosemary Norris Rhodes of Augusta; four sons, Cecil Calvin Norris of Flowery Branch, Donald Norris, Ronald Lee Norris and Richard R. Norris, all of Davisboro; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Jacky Ray Chalker, 68, of Gibson entered into rest on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Chalker was born in Glascock County and lived here all of his life. He was a member of Gibson United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Gibson City Cemetery, with Rev. Griffin Thompson officiating.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Idelle Sheppard Chalker; two brothers, Jerome and Jimmy Chalker.
Survivors include his wife of 47 Years, Eva Kelley Chalker; one son, Douglas Chalker of Gibson; two daughters, Kelly (Brian) Dooly of Toccoa, and Jennifer (Ray) Gay of Harlem; one sister, Juanice Clark of Hiawassee; two grandchildren, Trish Strelec and Haley Chalker.

Mrs. Willie Mae Lampkin of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at University Hospital.
Mrs. Lampkin was a native of Wrens, a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board and Mother of the Church, and she was an Eastern Star.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at 12:30 p.m. at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Oscar Wells officiating. Burial was in Second Mt. Moriah Memorial Gardens, Harlem.

Mr. Robert L. Lowry
Mr. Robert L. Lowry, 81, of Augusta entered into rest on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at University Hospital.
A native of Louisville, he was born to the late Jimmy and Lizzie Lowry. Mr. Lowry was a member of Williams Memorial CME Church, where he was the former Lay Leader for five years. While serving in the Augusta-Sparta District of the Georgia North Region Sixth Episcopal District, he worked as District Lay Leader for three years and established Lay Councils throughout the districts. Additionally, he served as the Connectional Steward for the CME Church for eight years. Robert was elected the first black Commander of the 10th District for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as Commander for Post 3837 for several years.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 18, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Gilbert Lambuth Memorial Chapel at Paine College, with Rev. Dr. Paul W. Gardner officiating. Interment was in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy (Christine) Lowry Jr., Jacksonville, Fla., and Richard Joe (Willie Lee) Lowry, Louisville; sisters, Marie Archer, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Effie Hankins, New York City, N.Y.

Mr. Cecil Steve May, 55, of Thomson entered into rest on March 14, 2011.
Mr. May was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County, and was the son of the late Matthew William May and the late Catherine Reese May. He was retired from construction work and was a Baptist by faith.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating. Interment services followed in Westview Cemetery.
