Phillian Guest, 87, of Winterville passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010. A native of Colbert, Mrs. Guest, who always put God first, was the daughter of the late Samuel Paul and Cora Gabriel Cross and was preceded in death by a son, Mitchell Ford Guest. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Melvin V. Guest, Jr. of Winterville; children, Paula F Salamat of Asheville, NC; Bryan Guest and his wife, Donna of Colbert and Maria G Funk of Winterville; grandchildren, Chris T Pickelsimer, Tara D Polson and her husband, Mark, Jade Sunshine Landis, Steven Tyler Funk, and Zachary C Funk, and great-grandchildren, Andrew L. Shoemaker, Alex M Shoemaker, Laken Landis, Maggie Polson, and Jessica Polson. Graveside services were held 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7 at Winterville City cemetery with Mr. Richard Gasser and Mr. Scott Hamilton officiating.

Sara Inez Rice, age 77, of Hoschton, formerly of Snellville, entered into rest on Feb 4, 2010 surrounded by her family. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Ronny L. and Dale Rice of Hoschton; five grandchildren, Angela Bain, Jody and Michelle Rice, Jamie and Devin Rice, Bridget and Orvie Crawford, and Chad and Autumn Rice; eight great grandchildren, Marley Bain, Dylan Harris, Brianna Harris, Aiden Rice, Gavin Rice, Gabe Rice, Kathleen Rice, and Tyler Rice; three sisters, Hilda Cochran, Jean Jones, and Joan Hathaway; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Johnny B. Rice, Sr.; son, John B. Rice, Jr.; parents, Jones Alex and Curtis Bird Broach; two sisters, Nancy Broach and Billie Rowden and three brothers, Hugh Ed, Alton, and Tom Broach. Mrs. Rice was born in Bostwick, GA (Walton County) on June 6, 1932. She retired from Thomson Financial Publishing after 15 years of service. She was a member of the Snellville United Methodist Church and enjoyed sewing and macromae in her free time.

Willie Paul Beck, age 94 of Covington passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2010. Mr. Beck was born on June 13, 1915 in Colquitt County to the late Charlie Willie and Ethel Kathleen Murphy Beck. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Nelle West Beck, and brother, John Beck, Bryant Beck and the Rev. David Beck. Mr. Beck worked as a Southern Missionary Baptist Minister and was a retired school teacher. He was a member of Alcovy Baptist Church in Monroe and a veteran of the United States National Guard. Survivors include: daughters, Betty Lynelle Beck of Lindale, TX and Kathie Pate and husband Larry H. Pate of Covington; grandchildren, Jennifer Webb, Jessica Dyer, Jay Adams, Joel Pate, Wesley Beck, Tye Beck, Shane Beck, Sheila Norris, Michelle Harper, Cynthia Castillo, Katy Miller, and Chuck Crews, sisters, Drusilla Cone of Pelham, and Faye Josey of Georgiana, AL.

James Donald Mobley, age 75 of Monroe, passed away Jan. 29, 2010. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, in the Monroe Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Kader White officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Vernon Christian Church Cemetery. Mr. Mobley was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Ossie Mobley. He is survived by his cousins, Carol Head of Monroe; Elaine Patrick of Marietta; Martha Phelps and Linda Sellers, both of Social Circle; Runnell Young of Winder; Dot Carithers of Monroe; Hester Robison of Loganville; Rita Golden and Judy Henley, both of Nicholson. Tim Stewart Funeral Home, Monroe, was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy L. Fox, 78, of Monroe died on March 19, 2010. She was born on Feb. 10, 1932 in Jasper, Georgia to the late Laura Stone Moss and the late Howard Moss. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Herbert Johnnie Fox. Helen Picklesimer Maffett, age 73 of Monroe, died on March 19, 2010. She was born in Murphy, North Carolina on Aug. 6, 1936 to the late Hobert Picklesimer and the late Myrtle Graves Picklesimer. Surviving are: daughter and son-in-law, Heddy and Nate Still of Monroe; son and daughter-in-law: Brad and Angie Maffett of Royston; sister and brother-in-law: Dorothy and Dennis Graham of Buford; brother and sister-in-law.

Mr. Emory F. Sikes
Mr. Emory F. Sikes, age 76, of Douglasville, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010 at his residence. He was born April 14, 1933 in Monroe, the son of the late Mr. Clifford G. Sikes and the late Mrs. Bethel Slaton Sikes. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford Sikes and Bobby Sikes, both of Monroe. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Atlanta City Police Department following 35 years of devoted service from March 1957 to December 1991, during which time he was one of the original supervisors of the first SWAT team for Atlanta. He also commanded Zone 2 during his service and the Mounted Patrol until he retired. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Jones of Douglasville; son, Emory C. Sikes of Atlanta; sisters, Elizabeth Coleman of Monroe, and Patricia and Bill Morris of Monroe; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services were conducted Monday, March 22, at 1 p.m. from the Douglas Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Durden officiating.

Mrs. Carolyn Clark Summerville, 58 of Washington, died on March 18, 2010 at her home. A native of Atlanta, she was the daughter of Thomas F. Clark and the late Christine Edmondson Clark. Mrs. Summerville was a Navy wife and a homemaker. Those around her always enjoyed her sense of humor. Survivors include her husband, Ernie; sons, Keith and Chris Summerville of Washington; father, Thomas F. Clark of Washington; brothers, Randy, Roy, and Ronald all of Loganville and Johnny Clark of Washington; sister, Patricia Bagwell of Washington. Mrs. Montine Walton of Social Circle died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Walton Regional Medical Center. She was born on Nov. 24, 1924 in Monroe to the late Jessie and Etta Davis Kirk. Mrs. Walton was of the Methodist faith a forner member of Newborn United Methodist Church. Mrs. Walton is survived by: daughter and son-in-law: Barbara and Paul Schlageter, Social Circle; grandchildren, Jennifer Foskey, Tonja Tart , Stacey Schlageter and Jamie Schlageter; great grandchildren, Landon Ward, Colin Ward and Blair Power; nieces, nephews, other family and close friends. She is preceded in death by husband, Charlie W. Walton. Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. on March 8, at Chapel of Harwell-Wheeler Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Sorrells officiating. Interment followed at Newborn Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Jessie Irene Brooks, age 96 of Loganville, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, M. D. "Jeff" Brooks. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Gene Matthews, Loganville, Dorothy and Joel Garrett, Hawkinsville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Brooks was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, Loganville. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 4, at 11 a.m. at Scot Ward's Harry White Chapel with Dr. Don Richards and the Rev. James Dispain officiating; interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Stockbridge. Virgil R. 'Buster' Sorrell
Virgil R. 'Buster' Sorrell, age 65 of Monroe, formerly of Decatur, entered into rest on Feb. 26, 2010. He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Jean M. Sorrell of Monroe; sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan and Terina Sorrell of Lawrenceville, Brett Sorrell of Tucker, Sammy and Kerri Sorrell of Social Circle, and Josh and Brittany Sorrell of Winder; grandsons, Brody Sorrell, Jacob Sorrell, and Lane Sorrell; step-grandchildren, Josh, Taylor, and Madison Assouad; mother, Charlotte Sorrell of Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Frances Sorrell of Monroe; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Buster was born in Atlanta on October 3, 1944 to Charlotte Sorrell and the late Sam Sorrell. He was a 1962 graduate of North Druid Hills High School. He was a devoted soccer coach for 20+ years in Snellville. Buster loved spending time outdoors with his boys. Hunting and fishing were some of their favorites. He was a body shop director of numerous dealerships in the metro area from 1965-2008. He was a devoted member of Free Chapel Church in Gainesville, and he loved spending time with his grandkids.

Mrs. Veleria Harrison, 67, of Maysville, died Monday, April 26, 2010. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Sherrie and Jerry Scaturro of Cleveland, Patricia Cole of Maysville; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard, Jr. and Suzanne Brown of Pennsylvania, Stephen and Becky Brown of Cleveland, William D and Rhonda Brown of Loganville; sister and brother-in-law, Willette and Leonard Wilson of Decatur; brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Shirley Harrison of Covington; twenty two grandchildren; and thirty great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 30, in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons. Interment Melwood Cemetery. The family received friends from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at A. S. Turner & Sons. A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. James Ellison “Jimmy” Norman, (Ret. U. S. Army, 1st Sgt), age 73, of Spring Hill, TN, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at his home. Jim was a 23 year veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Vietnam and attaining the rank of 1st Sgt. He was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and also Berea Church of Christ. Preceded in death by parents, Berry L. Norman & Hazel Hargrove Norman Brothers. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Monique A. R. “Micky” Norman; sons, David L. (Kay) Norman & Charles J. Norman; daughter, Vickaline P. (Buster) Helms; grandchildren, 1st Lt Nicholas James Meyers, Charles Clayton Norman and Mathew Travis Norman; brothers, Mark (Beth) Brothers and David (Sherry) Brothers; sisters, Barbara Anne (Armor) Thomas, Linda Vetitoe, Lydia Svejoa and Janet (Glen) Marshall; sister in law, (the biggest little woman), Margaret Norman; brother in law, Jaques (Janine) Piquepaille; aunt, Velma.

John Thomas Allen
John Thomas Allen, 91, of Mountain City, formerly of Campton, passed away at the Ronnie Green Heart Center in Gainesville, on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. He was born in Morgan County, and was the son of the late Paul True and Leila Deloach Allen. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Cora Lee Kirk Allen. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Cathey and husband Frank of Mountain City. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer Arbitter and her husband Stephen of Clayton, and Stephanie Shuman and husband Leiston of Savannah, and great-grandchildren, Mark, Allen, and Wyatt Arbitter, and Sarah Kate Shuman. Surviving siblings include James Allen, Nina Nix, Irene White, Alice Burgess of Walton County, and Eugene Allen of Atlanta. Mr. Allen was a member of Mountain City United Methodist Church and a member and past Worshipful Master of Campton Lodge 566. He was proud to serve in the US Army during WWII. He was a devoted son and a loving husband and father who will be missed every day.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Marveen Mathis of Monroe; daughter, Donna Mathis of Monroe; sister, Louise Berdine of Acworth; brothers, David Garrison of Augusta, and W.J. Garrison of Conyers; grandchildren, Ashley Daniels and Tim Daniels; great granddaughter, Alyssa Daniels; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Blount officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Perkins Head and his son, Harold Head and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jean and Bo Myers of Loganville; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Barbara Head of Monroe and Charles and Susan Head of Loganville; brother, Preston Head of Monroe; daughter-in-law, May Head of Madison; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Dillon (Dilly Doo) Beesley of Loganville died April 17, 2010, at the age of seven. His family said of him that he was a precious gift from God who taught them many, many lessons about life. Dillon is survived by his parents, Rex Lee Beesley, Jr. and Debra Lynn Brown Beesley of Loganville; sister, Jessica LeeAnn Smith of Canton; brothers, Larry Paul Collins, Corbin Seth Beesley, both of Loganville, and Rex L. Beesley, III of Canton; maternal grandparents, Larry H. and Sherry B. Brown; paternal grandparents, Rex L., Sr. and Patricia Ann Beesley. Funeral Services for Dillon were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, with Pastor Kenny Dockins and Pastor Todd Neil, officiating, and interment followed at Corinth Memorial Gardens, Loganville. Jerry T. Smith, 67, of Loganville, passed away on April 20, 2010 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Nora Smith, his infant daughter, Shasta Lee Smith, three sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his wife, Adrianne M. (Mickey) Smith, his daughter, Kenna A. Moore, his son, Liberty C. Smith and his wife Laura, and granddaughters Stella Smith and McKenna Moore. Jerry is also survived by his brother, John Smith and family of Alabama, his sister Peggy Munger and family of North Carolina, as well as another brother, Frank Smith and his family, sisters Betty Haddon, Tina Torres and Darlene Oquendo and their families, who all reside in Florida. His remains were cremated. No funeral service will be held at this time, but a memorial service is in the planning stages at a later date. R.T.
