Gladys Carnes Walker

Gladys Carnes Walker, 73, a native of Putnam County and a longtime resident of the Swords Community died on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospice in Bogart. Born on February 3, 1938 in Eatonton, she was the daughter of the late James Rufus Carnes and Merle Victoria Linch Carnes. She attended Union Chapel Church School and graduated from Putnam County High School. Gladys met George Luther Walker and they were married
in August of 1958. George was the owner and operator of Walker Beef and Poultry Farm and she was a homemaker helping him on the farm. As long as health permitted, she was a faithful member of the Swords United Methodist Church. She loved being with family and friends, but especially loved her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing games, gardening and working in the yard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Walker in May of 1999; two brothers, Lanier Carnes and Harold Carnes; and a brother-in-law, Charles Dial. She is survived by a daughter, Deborah Walker of Greensboro, GA; a son, Larry Lamar Walker and wife Sandy of Cumming, GA; two sisters, Lucy Walker and husband Edward of Greensboro, GA and Lois Dial of Watkinsville, GA; sister-in-law, Shirley Carnes of Milledgeville, GA; two grandchildren, Jennifer Marzen and Jeffrey Marzen; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Swords United Methodist Church,1401 Swords Road, Buckhead, GA 30625 with Rev. Dr. Anthony N. Gavalas, Rev. Tom Dial and Rev. Sara Kate Cheatham Bryan, age 86, of Eatonton, GA died Monday, October 31, 2011 at Putnam General Hospital in Eatonton. She was born on September 24, 1925 in Union Point, Georgia to the late Sylvester Cheatham and Louella Windsor Cheatham. She attended school in Union Point and married
Jewell Hubert “Runt” Bryan on December 23, 1939. They lived in Atlanta for thirty years and in Greshamville for thirty-five years. Due to declining health they moved to Eatonton to live with their daughter and her husband, Cindy and Jimmy Moore. At the time of Mr. Bryan’s death, they had been married
for seventy years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed being with her family.
In addition to her husband, Jewell Hubert “Runt” Bryan, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bobby Cheatham and Herschel Cheatham. She is survived by her two daughters, Sandra Connor of Conyers, GA and Cindy Moore and husband Jimmy of Eatonton, GA; a son, Ron Bryan of Madison, GA; and a brother, Sylvester Cheatham, Jr.; five grandsons, Greg Connor, Daren Bryan (Linda), Kevin Bryan, Bryan Moore (Wansley) and Brent Moore (Heather); eight great grandchildren, Amanda Barrell (James), Clint Connor, Chase Moore, McKenzie Moore, Mason Moore, Russell Bryan, Ava Bryan and Nathaniel Bryan; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Jack Merritt, age 97, of Greensboro, GA died Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Greene Point Health Care & Rehab in Union Point, GA. Mr. Merritt was born March 8, 1914 in Warren County to the late Charlie Merritt and Bessie Raley Merritt, but lived all of his life in Greene County. He worked at Mary Leila Cotton Mill as a fixer and retired in 1979. He enjoyed coon hunting and rabbit hunting with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Annie Kate Merritt; a daughter, Rita M. Chappell; a son Edward E. Merritt; and siblings, Odessa M. Worsham, Della Mae M. Crawford, Edward Merritt and C. G. “Babe” Merritt. He is survived by two daughters, Elaine M. Cantrell and husband Terry of White Plains, GA and Jacqueline M. Smith and husband Richard of Altamonte Springs, FL; a son Bobby Merritt of Greensboro, GA; a sister, Julia Mann of Lithonia, GA; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

William Lewis Ashley

William Lewis Ashley, age 74, of the Veazey Community of Greene County, died Friday, November 4, 2011 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of Greene County, he was born March 4, 1937 to the late Floyd Roger Ashley and Bertha Kate Askew Ashley. He attended Greensboro High School and then entered the United States Army serving his country for four years from 1958 to 1962. He married
the former Shirley Whitlow in September of 1962. Lewis began his working career for Mary Leila Cotton Mill, then worked for Bradley Pontiac. In 1993 he retired from Alcan as a crusher operator. He played the guitar for the Greene County Ramblers Band and they enjoyed playing for square dances. He was a member of Cornerstone Christian Center of Madison and enjoyed fishing and playing with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 49 years, Shirley Whitlow Ashley, of the Veazey Community, he is survived by a daughter, Dean Ashley Griffin of Eatonton, GA; a son, David Ashley and wife Jeanie of the Veazey Community; son-in-law, Harold Griffin of LaGrange, GA; grandchildren, Josh Griffin, Chris Griffin, and Nicki Ashley; great grandchildren, Kaylie Miller and Jason Miller; special friends, Snuffy and Francine Smith of Greshamville, GA; and many other relatives and friends.

She was born on April 25, 1940 to the late Willie Dee Poss and Willie Lou Thompson Poss. She grew up in Greene County and attended school in Greensboro. Lester Stapp, Sr., the father of her children, and later married
Charles Chandler. Emma Dell always enjoyed working in flower beds and taking care of loved ones.
She is survived by two daughters, Dedee Moon and husband Tim of Crawfordville, GA and Terrie Marcus of Cartersville, GA; two sons, Lee Stapp of Greensboro, GA and Scott Stapp of Greensboro, GA; six sisters, Mary Callaway Stewart of Madison, GA, Carolyn Hardy and husband Bill of Milledgeville, GA, Shirley Tate and husband Bo of Greensboro, GA, Barbara Bradley of Greensboro, GA, Melissa Hunter and husband Franklin of Washington, GA and Vicki Starr and husband Jim of Madison, GA; four grandchildren, Tony Moon and wife Amanda, Danielle Higdon and husband Eric, Sam Marcus and Katie Rose all of Greensboro, GA; five great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Quenton Clark Hadden

Quenton Clark Hadden, 82, of Greensboro, Georgia, died on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at his residence. Born in Greene County on April 27, 1929 he was the son of the late Carl Wynn Hadden and Sarah Beaulah “Sally” Bedsole Hadden. After his mother died when he was three, he was raised by his Aunt Lula Hadden. He graduated from Greensboro High School in the class of 1946 and attended North Georgia College. He married
the former Jean Holtzclaw of Whitfield County in 1950. For a while they lived in Madison Georgia where he was a member of the First Baptist Church. His working career started at Caldwell Cleaners working for Russell Caldwell and later he purchased the laundry. His most recent job was working for Greensboro Cleaners. After moving back to Greensboro, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro and a member of Hamp’s Sunday School Class. He was also member emeritus and past master of Madison Masonic Lodge #376. Throughout his life Quenton served in various positions in church, first as deacon in Madison, GA and then as deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for over 30 years at First Baptist Church in Greensboro, Georgia. Quenton never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to others and also enjoyed fishing, working in the yard and gardening, especially roses.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Holtzclaw Hadden on July 13, 2004. At the time of her death, they had been married
fifty-three years. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Emorite Hadden, Howard G. “H.G.” Hadden, Raymond Hadden, Marshall F. “Doc” Hadden; a baby girl that died at birth; and a stepsister, Alma Hadden. He is survived by two daughters, Elaine H. Courtney of Greensboro, GA and Denise H. Channell and husband Brian of Greensboro, GA; five grandchildren, Keith Channell and wife Meredith, Joshua Channell and wife Ashley, Seth Channell and special friend Liza Vensel, Michelle Courtney Terrell and husband Wesley and Jaime Courtney and fiance Michael Wheeler; five great grandchildren, Ta’ Varen Courtney, Eli Channell, Abbie Channell, Trent Channell and Aleigha Channell; sister, Lillian Burgess of Panama City Beach, FL; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Louise Llewallyn Harris Mitchell

Louise Llewallyn Harris Mitchell, 99, died Thursday, October 13, 2011 at Cobb Health Care Center in Comer, GA. She was the wife of Freeman Mitchell a retired attorney. She was born August 26, 1912 in Nicholson, Jackson County, Georgia, the daughter of Joseph Thompson Llewallyn and Nannie Hardy Llewallyn of Banks County and lived in Athens, Decatur and Greensboro with her former husband John D. Harris. She had three children, Gloria Hope Verdery, John Dixon Harris, Jr. and Joseph Llewallyn Harris and two stepsons, Richard Harris and Warren Harris and four grandchildren. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Greensboro, Georgia for many years before she moved to Mount Dora, Florida with her husband, Freeman.
Louise Llewallyn Mitchell was an artist at heart and has always had a keen interest, love and appreciation for all arts. She began drawing and painting flowers long before she reached high school age. She studied at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and studied with artist Lonnie Leonard whose encouragement led her to devote her talents toward oil painting. Her canvases proved her wide interest in flowers, landscapes and small animals. She excelled in growing and arranging flowers, drying and committing them to canvas. She was a devoted garden club member and was President of Atlanta Northwood Garden Club for the 1969-1970 term. She served in various capacities on the board of The Garden Club of Georgia and was a life member of that organization. She was in much demand as a speaker at garden clubs throughout Georgia.
She was a collector of fine porcelains and exquisite embroidered linens and she has numerous times lectured on table settings. Her artistic sense of color enabled her to create a happy blend of flowers, food and table accessories. The artist’s studio was in her home and she could be found there almost any time of day or night engrossed in her book collection of the works of famous artists. Her most recent oil paintings were presented at the Gainesville National Bank of Gainesville, Georgia, the First National Bank of Athens and The Bank of Greensboro, now BB&T;, Greensboro, Georgia.

Ruth Hazel Rhodes Curtis

Ruth Hazel Rhodes Curtis, age 69, of Atlanta, GA, died Monday, October 31, 2011 at the Harbor Grace Hospice of Atlanta. A native of Taliaferro County she was born in Crawfordville, GA on December 6, 1941 the only daughter of the late Thomas Hinman Rhodes, Sr. and Essie Harrison Rhodes. She was a 1960 graduate of Alexander Stephens Institute. Right after high school she moved to the Atlanta area and on February 20, 1963 married
John Wayne Curtis, Sr. For over twenty years she was the switchboard operator at Doctors Hospital in Tucker, GA. She was a member of Margaret’s Grove Baptist Church and visited often on weekends with family and friends in Crawfordville. She also enjoyed reading and watching tv.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wayne Curtis, Sr. in August of 2006; and brothers, Thomas Hinman “Tommy” Rhodes, Jr. and James Herman Rhodes, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Annette Curtis of Atlanta, GA; her son, John Wayne Curtis, Jr. of Dallas, GA; brothers, J. C. Rhodes of Crawfordville, GA, Herbert Rhodes and wife Dorothy of Crawfordville, GA and Alvin Rhodes and wife Connie of Crawfordville, GA; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Special in her heart was her great neice Tionne Rhodes. Tionne was like a granddaughter to Hazel and she loved her dearly.

David A. O'Keefe

David A. O’Keefe, of Greensboro, Georgia passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Southwest Christian Hospice in Union City, Georgia at the age of 77. Born in Astoria, New York on September 11, 1934, he was the son of the late Catherine Mary Cooney O’Keefe and David Aloysius O’Keefe. He graduated from Regis High School in New York City, NY in 1952 and from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY in 1956. On May 11, 1957, he married
the former Diana Haynes in New York City. Upon graduation from college he began work for Lybrand, Ross Bros. and Montgomery, which is now PricewaterhouseCoopers. He became a partner in 1967 and retired in 1991 after thirty-five years of service. Mr. O’Keefe moved from Greenlawn, New York to Reynolds Plantation in 1996, and was a member of Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church in Greensboro.
Mr. O’Keefe is survived by his wife, Diana Haynes O’Keefe of Greensboro, Georgia; four daughters, Erin Hedge and husband John, Susan Heath and husband Dennis, Catherine Nearhos and husband Barry and Nancy O’Keefe and Michael Imbasciani; a son, David O’Keefe and Kenneth Tosti; grandchildren, Christine and Lauren Hedge, Diana and Stephanie Nearhos and Michael and Casey Imbasciani; a sister, Cathleen Bozzella and husband John; a brother, Thomas O’Keefe and wife Josephine; and a number of other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary O’Keefe Allen.
A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, January 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Father G. Thomas Lee “Tommy” Morrow of Woodville, Georgia died Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospice in Athens, GA at the age of 69. He was born to the late Will Tom Morrow and Drew Willie Ayers Moon on October 29, 1942 in Crawfordville, GA. He grew up in Crawfordville and attended Alexander Stephens Institute. He worked for Hershell McCannon’s Salvage Yard as a mechanic. Forty years ago he married
the former Leona Webb of Union Point.
He is survived by his wife, Leona Webb Morrow of Woodville, GA; step daughters, Beatrice Thompson of Penfield, GA, Brenda Edwards of Siloam, GA and Esther Thompson of Greensboro, GA; a sister, Jane Morrow Whiddon of High Springs, FL; a nephew, Chris Carrithers; two nieces, Berta Ann Moon and Mary Frances Moon; 15 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Nicky Robert Huff; and a sister, Ruth Moon Huff.

Heather Marie Nicholas

Heather Marie Nicholas, age 34, of White Plains, GA, died Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Athens Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with brain cancer for two and a half years. Heather was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina on April 26, 1977 to Gary Merle Nicholas and Marsha Deann Smith Nicholas. She graduated from Lakeside High School in Evans, GA in 1995 and the University of Evansville in Evansville Indiana in 1999 earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education. After graduation she made her home in Evansville and for ten years taught at Culver Elementary School. She was a member of Old North United Methodist Church in Evansville IN, where she was the senior high youth leader for 12 years. She also enjoyed crafting, animals and being a summer camp youth counselor. For the past year she enjoyed driving horse drawn carriages at Driving Magic, Inc., which is a non-profit organization providing therapeutic horse driving activities for children and adults with disabilities. Heather thoroughly enjoyed her time doing this.
She is survived by her parents. Rev. Gary Nicholas and Marsha Smith Nicholas of White Plains, GA; a brother, Andrew Merle Nicholas and wife Mary Helen of Wichita, KS; niece and nephew, Haylee Nicholas and Austin Nicholas; maternal grandmother, Anna Jane Smith of Schoolcraft, MI; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Lewis Charles Smith and her paternal grandparents, Merle and Nancy Nicholas.

Marion Eberly Arberg

Marion Eberly Arberg, 93, of Greensboro, Georgia, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospice House in Athens, Georgia. She was born on January 16, 1919 in Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania to the late Dr. J. Lee Eberly and Grace Schwabenbauer Eberly. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Degree in Education, where she was an honor student and President of Delta Gamma Sorority. It was in college that she met her husband, Carl Paul Arberg Jr. They were married
on December 6, 1941, the day before the Pearl Harbor attack, and were devoted to one another for the next 69 years of their marriage. In addition to being of great faith, she was an avid reader and was well-versed in many topics including religion, travel, politics, literature and sports. Marion and Carl shared their early lives together in Verona, New Jersey and Needham and Wayland, Massachusetts, followed by 25 years in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and, finally, 8 years in Atlanta and Greensboro.
Marion is survived by two sons, Lee Arberg and his wife, Carol of Greensboro, Georgia, and Kenneth Arberg and his wife, Gayle of Marietta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Brad and his wife, Brook, and Stacey and her husband, Kevin Urrutia; and four great-grandchildren, Tyler and Drew Urrutia and Hannah and Blair Arberg; as well as a number of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, on February 21, 2011 and by her sister, Jeanne.
The family will have a private memorial service at a later date. Thomas Ladd Gesme
(January 3, 1944 -January 31, 2012)
Thomas Ladd Gesme, age 68, of Greensboro, GA, died Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family. Mr. Gesme was born on January 3, 1944 in Madison, WI. He was a 1962 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA and in 1967 earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Memphis State University. He served as vice president of Sigma Chi Fraternity, but the highlight of his college years was meeting his future wife, Virginia Anne Atkinson, whom he married
in 1967. The majority of his working years were spent at Baxter International, starting out in Quality Control and ending years later as National Accounts Manager. His career required moves to Arkansas, Alabama and Illinois enabling him to enjoy many parts of the U. S. and to become a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. Tom was an avid fisherman and golfer, who was always happy to share his passions with others. Three years ago, Tom and Virginia moved from Statesboro, GA to the Del Webb Community in Greensboro, GA. Tom became a very familiar figure at Del Webb, where he was often seen wearing his maroon jacket, tending the fire at the Pavilion for Sunday evening sunsets, fishing off the piers and helping friends and neighbors on the bocce courts.
In addition to his wife Virginia, he is survived by a daughter, Debbie Tipperreiter and her husband Jim of Mundelein, IL; a son, David Gesme of Spring, TX; two grandchildren, Monica and Rachel Tipperreiter; and a number of relatives and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Donald Russell Gesme and Catherine Rocca Gesme.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Del Webb Pavilion, 1001 Muscogee Way, Greensboro, GA with Fred Reese officiating. Family and friends will gather at the Del Webb Clubhouse immediately following the service. Peggy Norrell Gardner
(December 27, 1937 -January 14, 2012)
Peggy A. Norrell Gardner, age 74, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, GA. Peggy was born December 27, 1937, in Beaumont, Texas to the late Laird Orvis Norrell and Lyda Allene Harrison Norrell. She graduated from Jones County High School and Junior College. She earned an Associate Degree of Arts from Gulf Coast Community College and a Bachelor of Science at West Florida University. She went on to earn a Masters of Education at the University of South Alabama, where she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. She taught at Rutherford High School in Panama City, Florida, Mary Montgomery High School in Mobile, Alabama and was Director of Career Placement at Clayton State College in Morrow, GA, where she retired. After retirement she moved to Union Point and most recently lived at Willow Run Retirement Home in Greensboro. Peggy was a member of Grace Fellowship Church of Greensboro.
She is survived by a daughter, Lilli G. Thomas and husband Bill of Greensboro, GA; a son Max Gardner, Jr. and wife Judy of Alpharetta, GA; a sister, Cindy Lancaster and husband James of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Stuart Thomas and wife Casey, Susan Satterfield and husband John, Jacob Thomas and Carri McElhenney, Emily Gardner and Abigail Gardner; great grandchildren, Evan and Sidney Satterfield, India Thomas and Braxton Thomas; a number of other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by husband Max Gardner and aunts Bessie Harrison Bishop and Flossie Harrison Stallworth.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, January 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel with Rev. Rick Hermann and Dr. Jimmy Long officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until time for the service at McCommons Funeral Home in the historic Hall-Thomas House. Alton Murphy
(November 6, 1939 -January 18, 2012)
Alton Murphy, age 72, of Greensboro, Georgia died Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Sparta Health Care and Rehab. Born on November 6, 1939, in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Charlie Clyde Murphy and Ruby Wolfe Murphy. After graduation from Oglethorpe County High School, he immediately went to work for a service station in Washington, GA. From the late 1960’s to the early 1990’s he served as a police officer for the City of Union Point for twenty-one years and with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office for three years as well as working for Walker’s Amoco and later English Amoco. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point.
In addition to his wife, Ann Finch Murphy of Greensboro, GA, he is survived by two sons, David Hall and wife Connie of Greensboro, GA and Randy Murphy of Greensboro, GA; a daughter, Michelle Henry and husband Tommy of Union Point, GA; two sisters, Estelle Cooper and husband Rufus of Jefferson, GA and Velma Hulette of Jefferson, GA; grandson, T. A. Henry of Union Point, GA, and two step granddaughters, Tiffany Crowe and husband Michael of Jackson, GA and Brandy Ballew and husband Clint of Demorest, GA; and a number of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Preston Murphy.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 20, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at Callaway Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Key officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Major Richard Campbell, Sgt.
