Myrtice Lee Harrison

Myrtice Lee Harrison, age 84 of Tignall, formerly of Monroe, died on Aug. 13, 2008. She was born in Walton County on May 12, 1924 to the late Bob Mobley and the late Mary Williams Mobley. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Ralph Lamar Harrison.

Surviving are: sons and daughters-in-law: Jimmie and Sarah Harrison of Tignalll, Calvin and Dianne Harrison of Monroe, Lynn and Judy Harrison of Monroe, Wayne and Janet Harrison of Crawford, and Ed and Lisa Harrison of Monroe; daughters and sons-in-law: Sandra and Darrell McClure of Commerce, and Shelia and Vincent Failla of Woodstock; 12 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Saturday Aug. 16th at 11:30a.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Malcom officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery.

Shirley Ann Smith

Shirley Ann Smith, age 60 of Covington passed away Friday, August 8, 2008.

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 12 in Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Kifer officiating. Burial at Corinth Memorial Gardens, Loganville.

A loving mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, Ms. Smith is survived by: sons and daughter-in-law: Jay Waggoner, Kirk and Lindy Waggoner; granddaughter: Liberty Waggoner, all of Covington; father: James Ryan; brother: Melvin Ryan, both of PA; sisters: Dolores Kifer, NC; Patty Crivella, Caroline Grossman, Alma Kelly, all of PA; Kathleen Nelson, FL; and Iona Rebic, OR.

John Harold Young

John Harold Young, of Greensboro, Georgia, went to be with his Lord on Aug. 8, 2008. He was born on March 28, 1923 in Walton County Georgia to Mr. Thomas Ganaway Young and Mrs. Ethel Pearl Norris Young.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mrs. Barbara Louise Underwood Young; sons: Mike Young and wife Julie Young of Watkinsville, Greg Young and wife Cindy Young of Madison, Jeff Young and wife Debra Young of Monroe; sisters: Dorothy Deaton and Pearl Deaton; grandchildren: Shane Young, Jason and Jaimie Young, Katie and Josh Miller, Matthew Dickens, Kimberly and David Leach, Travis and Crystal Young, Lucy E. Young, Jessy Mae Young, Colt Young, Bryan and Holly Young, Nikki and Bradley Janes, Michele and Tommy Thrailkill, Brian Dodson and Ashleigh and Justin McCormack; great grandchildren: Cody and Tanna Young, Shyann Miller and Kaj Miller, Daniel Young, Jaden Janes, Mikaela Thrailkill and Xander Thrailkill; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Violet Barber, Tommy Lee Young, Ozella Barber, Nannie Mae Young, Earla Peters, Jack Young and Billy Young.

Mr. Young was raised on a sharecropper farm. He left school after the 5th grade to assist his father and siblings in working the farm. He served his beloved country with distinction in both theaters during World War II returning home in 1946. He married Barbara Louise Underwood in 1948 and started a small farm in Social Circle, Georgia. In 1951 Mr. Young moved his family to Atlanta, to work at General Motors, Fisher Body Plant in Lakewood. In 1953 Mr. Young began working for International Paper Company. He served that company faithfully in a career that spanned 4 decades. He started as a maintenance worker but quickly rose through the ranks working in sales traveling first around the Southeast selling products to small family dairies and then traveling around the United States as a special accounts manager selling products which he helped to design and develop. During this time Mr. Young advanced due to an outstanding work ethic and desire to constantly upgrade his education.

Throughout his life Mr. Young served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher, first at Cleveland Avenue Baptist Church in Atlanta, and then, after retirement at First Baptist Church of Greensboro, He especially enjoyed working with children in the church’s AWANA program. Mr. Young served as the President on many occasions for organizations such as the Southeast Atlanta Athletic Association and the Walter F. George High School PTA.

John never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to others swapping war stories and other interesting tales. Mr. Young enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a genuine love for nature which he instilled in his children and grandchildren, teaching them the importance of being good stewards of Georgia’s wildlife.

Funeral Services were held Monday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Greensboro with the Rev. Michael Hardy and the Rev. Colin Duncan officiating. Graveside Services with full military honors were held at 2 p.m. at Hill Haven Memory Gardens in Monroe.

John Horace Barton

John Horace Barton age 75 of Monroe, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday Aug. 11, in Monroe Church of God. The Rev. Wendell Smith, the Rev. Joey Grizzle and the Rev. Wayne Durden officiated, and interment followed in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Mr. Barton was a U. S. Army Veteran, retired from General Motors and a member of UAW Local 10. He was a member of Monroe Church of God. He was preceded in death by Cohen Brown. He is survived by his widow: Mary Elizabeth Barton; sons and daughters -in -law: John H. and Sadie Barton, Jr. of Snellville; Brad and Becky Barton of Monroe; brother: James Howard Barton of Lilburn; four grandchildren: Craig Barton, Kim Brown, Stephanie McCullough, Tyler Barton; six great grandchildren: Michael Barton, Jessica Grant, Miles McCullough, Maylee McCullough, Cameron Brown and Chase Brown, nieces and nephews.

Flora Cox

Flora Cox, age 91 of Loganville, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2008. Funeral Services were held 11a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 in the Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Hughes and the Rev. J. T. McMillian officiating. Burial followed at Haynes Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Loganville.

A Homemaker, a retired Nursing Assistant from Gwinnett Hospital and a member of Lenora Baptist Church, Snellville, Mrs. Cox was a wonderful Wife, Mother, Grandmother & Great Grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband: Doyle Cox; grandson: Gil Harris; son-in-law: Roy Harris.

She is survived by her children: Betty C. Harris, Augusta; Peggy C. and William Nix, Calhoun; Johnny and Susan Cox, Monroe; grandchildren: Gail & Bob Haller; Greg and Lisa Harris, Cristian and Katie Cox; Ricky & Shirley Nix; Billy and Donna Nix; great grandchildren: Alexandria Nix; Emma Cox; Ellie Cox; Joshua Cox; Gil Harris; Abby Harris; Sara Kate Harris; brother and sister-in-law: Robert and Pat Kilgore, Flowery Branch; several nieces and nephews.

George William (G.W.) Meadows

G.W. Meadows, 86, of Good Hope died on July 27, 2008. He was born on June 17, 1922 in Walton Co. to the late Mittie Batchelor Meadows and the late Roscoe Meadows.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Myrtice Meadows and son, the late George Meadows.

Surviving are children: Greg and Cathy Meadows of Monroe, Keith and Gina Meadows Taylor of Monroe; sister: Beatrice Briscoe of Monroe; brother: John Meadows of Monroe; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren with two great grandchildren due by February; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30 with the Rev. Kenneth Courts and Jim Harshman officiating. Interment followed at Queen Family Cemetery.

James Ruben Cooper

James Ruben Cooper age 76 of Marietta died Aug. 1, 2008. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008 at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw. with the Rev. Marshall Reinhardt officiating. Interment Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery. Born in Monroe, Mr. Cooper retired from Lockheed in Hydraulics after 40 years of service. He was a member of the First Evangelist Church in Marietta and Meyerhardt Masonic Lodge 314 in Kennesaw. Survivors are: wife: Minnie Cooper of Marietta; two daughters: Virginia Lewis and Jo Cunningham of Marietta; three brothers: David Cooper of Monroe, Danny Cooper Jefferson, Stuart Cooper of Jackson; sister: Pettye Ivey of Shalimar, FL; four grandchildren: Dalton Cunningham, Dylan Cunningham, CaSondra Lewis Massey, and Chuck Lewis; five great grandchildren.

Warren Clegg

Warren Clegg, age 83 of Monroe, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 10a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Brent Owens officiated, and interment followed in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Mr. Clegg was a WW II pilot in the Air Corps. He was a civic leader and a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Lakeland, FL. He built and operated the most modern dairy of its time. He was an honorable man.

He is survived by his wife: Evelyn Clegg; daughters: Laura (Jeff) Way of Spring Hill, FL and Libby Whitley of Monroe; brother: Hiram A. Clegg of Orlando, FL; sister: Lena Blankenship of Idaho; grandchildren: Jennifer Klein, Adam Thompson, Chris Way; great grandchildren: Makayla, Bryce, Kasey, Allie, Madilyn; several nieces and nephews.

A. Norman Carey
(December 13, 1935 -September 17, 2011)

A. Norman Carey, 75, of Greensboro, Georgia died Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Atlanta Medical Center. Born December 13, 1935 in Madison County, he was the son of the late Buford Gwinnett Carey and Annie Lou Bennett Carey. He graduated from Ila High School in the class of 1954. In 1955 he began work for Southern Bell and retired in 1989 as Bell South Central Office Manager. He married the former Brenda Lee Knox on April 12, 1986. His hobbies were fishing and reading. He loved walks with his wife and telling jokes and funny stories. He was a member of the Walker United Methodist Church and a member of the Walker United Methodist Church Men’s Club.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Knox Carey of Greensboro, GA; sons Tim Carey and wife Katherine of Greensboro, GA and Bruce Carey and wife Beth of Conyers, GA; brothers, Everett Carey and wife Mary of Danielsville, GA, Dwight Carey and wife Faye of Hull, GA and Ronnie Carey and wife Cheryl of Watkinsville, GA; grandchildren, Ryan Carey and wife Lauren of Douglasville, GA, Erin Carey, Zach Carey, Sarah Carey and Alexa Carey all of Conyers, GA and Cody Fox of Hampton, GA; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Harold "Sonny-Boy" Fox and his wife Debbie in April of this year.

Jack Walter Branyan

Jack Walter Branyan, age 71, of Monticello, died Thursday, September 22, 2011, at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin. Jack Branyan was born in Greensboro, Georgia to the late Walter Branyan and Marie Howell Branyan. He served in the U.S. Army. Jack lived in Eatonton for a number of years before moving to Monticello 21 years ago. Before retirement, Jack was a manager for the Lakeview Restaurant at Lake Oconee.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Pope Branyan of Monticello; son, Lance Branyan, U.S. Army, of Augusta, currently stationed in Korea; daughters, Julie Davis of Buford, Tracey Laux of White Plains, and Jenny Yearwood of Maxeys; 8 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sister, Nita Askew of Eatonton; and brother, Dickie Branyan of Madison.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 26, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro. Burial will be held in the Greenview cemetery in Greensboro. Harry Hudson will officiate.

Paul Edgar Foster
(April 24, 1958 -August 12, 2011)

Paul Edgar Foster, age 53, of the Veazey Community, died Friday, August 12, 2011 at Greene Point Health Care & Rehab in Union Point, GA. Paul was born April 24, 1958 in Augusta, GA to Allene Carolyn Moon Foster of the Veazey Community and the late Marvin Chester “Buddy” Foster. He graduated from Greene County High School in the class of 1976. While in high school, he worked for Chipman Union and after high school worked with his dad at Roper Ford. Then he worked for Dairyman Incorporated driving a milk truck until 2004. He was a member of Walker United Methodist Church. Paul’s hobbies were hunting, working on and driving tractors and country music. He especially enjoyed the competition at Liberty Antique Tractor Pull.

In addition to his mother, Carolyn Moon Foster of the Veazey Community, he is survived by a son, Eric Foster of Greensboro, GA; the mother of his children, Edna Ogletree; two sisters, Doris A. Toland and husband Gary of Dacula, GA and Elaine Standard and husband Haynes of the Veazey Community; two brothers, Joe Foster and wife Diane of Siloam, GA and Ray Foster and wife Jan of the Liberty Community; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son; Kyle Edward Foster.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, August 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road, Greensboro, GA with Rev. Farrett Boswell and Rev. John Pike officiating. Interment services will follow in the church cemetery. William Joseph Von Alt
(April 15, 1961 -August 19, 2011)

William Joseph Von Alt, age 50 of Greensboro, GA died Friday, August 19, 2011. Born in Johnstown, PA on April 15, 1961, he was the son of Josephine Dolence Von Alt of Allentown, PA and the late Robert Joseph Von Alt. As a young man, Bill enjoyed being an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Williams Port High School in Hagerstown Maryland and Whitfield Community College. Moving to Greensboro in 2001, he began working for Southern Yard Products, then a bridge contractor and later Quail Plantation. He then went out on his own as a landscaper and started A Creative Touch Landscape Service. In January of this year, Bill began working for Pool Specialists, where he was working at the time of his death. He was a very good handyman and a jack of all trades.

In addition to his mother, Josephine Dolence Von Alt of Allentown, PA, Bill is survived by his wife Kay Stone Von Alt of Greensboro, GA; stepdaughter, Megan Jordan of Eatonton, GA; son, William Joseph Von Alt of Hagerstown, MD; and stepson, Jason “Scooter” Jordan of Greensboro, GA; a sister, Vanessa Candreva of Pittsburgh, PA; father-in-law, Pep Stone of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Liam, Drew, Thomas, and D.J.

Dorothy S. West
(June 10, 1932 -August 17, 2011)

Dorothy passed away peacefully with her children at her side in San Diego, California. The daughter of Willie Tillman West and Irene Chasteen West, she was born and raised in Greensboro. She moved to San Diego in her early twenties but she always remained a southern girl at heart. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Esther Gray of San Diego; her two sons Dane Wallace of San Diego and Neil Reed of Lake Arthur, New Mexico; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Pauline McNair Lavender
(December 2, 1937 -August 14, 2011)

Pauline McNair Lavender, age 73, of Greensboro, GA, died Sunday, August 14, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospice in Bogart, GA. Born on December 2, 1937, she was a native of Mitchell, GA and the daughter of the late Rance Cicero McNair and Rhoda Belle Newsome McNair. She graduated from Union Point High School. She moved to Greene County from Kentucky ten years ago and worked as a Registered Nurse at Boswell Parker Nursing Home. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Union Point. Pauline enjoyed all church activities, any kind of water sports and reading.

She is survived by daughters Candy Alexander and husband Howard of Statesboro, GA and Cindy Agnew of Evansville, IN; a son, Mike English and wife Stacy of Elberta, AL; sister, Sara Barfield of Cannon, GA; brothers, James Henry “Jimmy” McNair, Sr. of Vidalia, GA, Albert McNair, Sr. and wife Annaliese of Greensboro, GA; seven grandchildren, McKenzie English, Delaney English, Patricia Milam, Vanessa Brzeski, Vince Brzeski, Daniel Alexander and Jordan Alexander. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby English; twin sisters, Jodene Sanders and Madeline McNair; and a brother, Jackie McNair.

Ethel Higdon Shevick
(April 20, 1928 -August 16, 2011)

Ethel Higdon Shevick, age 83, of Greensboro, Georgia died Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. She was born on April 20, 1928 in McDuffie County in Thomson, GA. She was the last of thirteen children of the late Adolphus Higdon and Cora Weaver Higdon. Ethel graduated from Greensboro High School in the class of 1945. Living in Greensboro most of her life, she lived awhile in Cape Coral, Florida where she was a receptionist for a funeral home from 1985 to 1989. She returned to Greensboro and in 1990 married Joe Shevick who preceded her in death. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro.

She is survived by sons, William Baxter Byce and wife Rhonda of Greensboro, GA and Terry Higdon Byce and wife Cynthia of Crofton, MD; grandchildren, Bill Byce and wife Brandi, Eric Byce and wife Terri, Jason Byce and wife Spencer, Courtney Byce, Lili Byce and Ming Byce; four great grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Mills McNeel “Mac” Byce; and siblings, Maude Patrick, Ruby Lord, Bonnie Hozendolf, Bessie Haney, Harvey Higdon, Ed Higdon, Luther Higdon, Roy Higdon, Delmar Higdon, Nelson Higdon, Arthur Higdon and Grady Higdon.

Graveside services will be held Friday, August 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642, with Rev. Wayne Usry officiating. Jana Lynn Bryant Johns
(February 20, 1954 -August 9, 2011)

Jana Lynn Bryant Johns, age 57, of Greensboro, GA died Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at her residence surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Atlanta, GA on February 20, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Lamar “Bob” Bryant and Nelda Nathaline Parks Bryant. In 1972 she graduated from Tucker High School and worked for the Georgia State Patrol in the Drivers License Division. Then she worked as a secretary for the Department of Agriculture. On May 18, 1980 she married Tommy A. Johns and worked with him some in his Farmers Market business. They had lived in Greensboro since 1996. Jana loved animals and was an excellent cook. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro and the Amicus Sunday School Class.

In addition to her husband of thirty-one years, Tommy Johns of Greensboro, GA, she is survived by a son, Vincent Johns of Marietta, GA; a sister, Kristi Bryant of Tallahassee, FL; a brother, Bobby Bryant of Jacksonville, FL; nephews, Hunter Bryant and David Bonds; and other relatives and friends.
