James Witcher Sr.

James Witcher Sr., 88 of Loganville, died on March 12, 2006. He was born in Walton County on Aug. 5, 1917 to the late James David Witcher and the late Annie Barber Witcher.

He was preceded in death by his wife: the late Mary Annie Farmer Witcher; sisters: the late Ruby Nunally and the late Marzee Casper; brothers: the late Cawley Witcher, the late Millard Franklin Witcher, the late Pirkle Witcher, and the late Jack Witcher.

Surviving are: daughters: Patricia Autry, Snellville, Martha Neal, Snellville, Veronica Duncan, Danielsville, Beth Robison, Loganville and Donna Bullington, Gray; sons: Eddie Witcher, Franklin Springs and Jim Witcher, Loganville; 13 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 14 at 2pm at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Cain Hendricks officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery.

Meadows Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

E. Earl Mallard, Jr.

Earl Mallard of Monroe died March, 9 2006 following a brief illness. He was 77.

A native of Shellman, GA he was the son of the late E. Earl Mallard, Sr. and Gladye Weathers Mallard.

He graduated from the University of Georgia and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant and Platoon Leader and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He then returned to earn a law degree from the University of Georgia where he was president of his senior law class.

He was a member of the Gridiron Society and Sigma Nu Fraternity.

He practiced law prior to becoming Deputy Director of the Worker’s Compensation Board and later serving as Chairman from 1973 until 1981.

Upon retiring, he established the law firm of Mallard and Wilson in Monroe.

He served as Chairman of the Walton County Senior Citizens Council and served on the Walton Library Board.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the VFW, American Legion and DAV.

He was a past president of the Monroe Rotary Club and in 2001 he was awarded the State Bar of Georgia Worker’s Compensation Section’s Distinguished Service Award.

Funeral services were held March 11, 2006 in the Monroe First United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Margaret Adams and the Rev. Hoyt Jenkins officiated. A private interment service was held in Rest Haven Cemetery.

He is survived by his widow: Airey Aultman Mallard; one daughter: Angela Mallard of Telluride, Co; a son and daughter in law: Wilson and Angie Mallard of Dacula; two grandchildren: Hanna and Andrew Mallard; a cousin: Sara Curry of Shellman.

Memorials are requested to FISH, 700 S. Madison Ave., Monroe, GA 30655 or the KIDSCHANCE, P.O. Box 623, Valdosta, GA 31603.

Arthur Bowick, Inc., Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Knight Boss

Mrs. Ruth Knight Boss, age 93, of Monroe, formerly of Covington, died March 8, 2006.

She had lived in Newton County and in the Covington Mill area of Covington for over fifty years before moving to Monroe.

Mrs. Boss is survived by nieces and nephews, Sammie and Martha Knight of Monroe, Gene and Patsy Knight of Loganville, Jerry and Linda Knight of Monticello, Mackie Knight of Snellville and other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Boss were held Friday, March 10, 2006 at 2:00PM from Corinth Christian Church with The Rev. Don Hardison, The Rev. Lester Waters and The Rev. Don Malcom officiating. Interment followed at Corinth memorial Gardens.

Serving as pallbearers were Danny Boss, Ray Cheek, Bill Entrekin, Keith Knight, Kevin Knight and R.C. Herring.

J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Directors were in charge of the arrangements.

Wanda G. Geiger
Wanda G. Geiger, 55, of Monroe died March 25, 2006. She was a native of Morgan County and the daughter of the late Arnold L. and Millie Brown Byrd. She was a homemaker. Funeral services were held March 27, 2006 in the chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home. The Rev. Randy Thompson officiated and interment was in Hill Haven Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Odean Patton, Jamie Patton, Mark Craven, Johnnie Brown, Mike Epps and Marcus Maxwell. She is survived by her husband: Roy Geiger;

Bill Conner, 48, of Monroe died March 21,2006. A native and life long resident of Walton County, he was the son of the late Thad Reese Conner, Jr. He was educated in Walton County and owned and operated Klassy KOI Ponds and Plants. Funeral services were held March 23, 2006 in the chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home

Carolyn G. Edwards
Carolyn G. Edwards, age 87 of Monroe died March 22, 2006. A native of New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Giordano and Margaret Sorrentino Giordano. The widow of Bruce S. Edwards, Sr., she resided in Decatur for many years where she was a commercial artist and worked for Western Electric. She was a member of St. Anna's Catholic Church. A funeral Mass was held March 24, 2006 in St. Anna's Catholic Church.

Edwin W. Young
Edwin W. Young, 81, of Monroe died March 17, 2006. A life long resident of Walton county. he was the son of the late Metz A. Young and Eula Stowe Young. He was retired from Hercules, Inc. and was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion. Funeral services were held March 19, 2006 in new Hope United Methodist Church. The Rev. Chris Laskey and Dr. Todd Ware officiated and interment was in the church cemetery

J.L. Brooks, 90 of Monroe, died on March 15, 2006. He was born in Walton County on October 14, 1915 to the late James Luther brooks, Sr. and the late Annie Laura McMahan Brooks. He was preceded in death by his first wife: the late Reamell Turner Brooks and his second wife: the late Ruby Faye Barrett Brooks and son: the late James Harold Brooks.

Kathleen D. Pratt, 88 of Las Vegas, NV died March 4, 2006. A native of Oconee County, she was the daughter of the late John H. Daves and Lenora Lord Daves. She was a resident of Monroe until she moved to Las Vegas in 1952. She was retired from the Stardust Showroom where she was a wardrobe attendant. She was the widow of the late Thomas K. Pratt. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, March 25, 2006 in Rest Haven Cemetery, Monroe.

Robert L. Bramblett
Robert L. (Dee) Bramblett, 86, of Monroe, GA died March 14, 2006. A native of Morgan County. he was the son of the late James Tandy Bramblett and Woodie Waters Bramblett. He was a resident of Atlanta for many years before moving to Monroe and was a retired employee of General Motors Doraville plant where he installed the wiring harness in the first car to roll off the assembly line. He had served in the National Guard and was a member of the UAW Local # 10. Funeral services were held March 16, 2006 in the chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home.

Vernon R. Hayes
Mr. Vernon R. Hayes of Loganville, passed Saturday, March 18, 2006. Vernon was born in Gwinnett County on June 20,1935 to Grady and Zlemma Echols Hayes. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Esque V. Hayes. A home-Going Celebration will be held Wed., March 22, 2006, at 11 am at Wages Snellville Chapel with The Rev. Durwin Paul officiating. The body will lie in state in the chapel from 8 am until 10:30 am Wed. Interment will follow in O'Kelly Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ruth Dickinson Stephens
Ruth Dickinson Stephens, 94, passed away on Monday March 13, 2006. A native of Walton County, Mrs. Stephens was the daughter of the late Prince Albert and Luna Cooper Dickinson. She was preceded in death by her husband: Bernice Calvin 'B.C.' Stephens, daughter: Kay Susan Stephens Bennett; step mother: Belle Eckles Dickinson; brothers: Homer, B.C., William and High Dickinson and sister: Elizabeth C. Waller. After completing school Mrs. Stephens taught school for six years in Walton and Oconee County and then worked at Athens Manufacturing Company for a number of years.

J.B. Roberts

J.B. Roberts, 77, of Monroe, died on April 3, 2006. He was born in Putnam County on Oct. 30, 1928 to the late John Henry Roberts and the late Fannie Lou Reynolds Roberts. He was preceded in death by his sisters: the late Lucy Leslie and the late Katie Jo McDonald.

Surviving are: wife: Rebecca McDonald Roberts, Monroe; daughters and sons-in-law: Karon Morman, Social Circle, Melisa and Jimmy Grubbs, Guyton, Renae Blanton, Monroe, Lynne and Tony Burden, Tullahoma, TN, Jenni and John Phipps, Monroe, and Sherry Morgan, Monroe; sisters: Lois Mills, Milledgeville, Grace Roberts, Blakely, Lorene Tammaline Pinellas Park, FL, and Sunshine Hill, Gainesville; brothers: Douglas Roberts, Eatonton and Walter (Bud) Roberts, Jacksonville, FL; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 5th at 11 a.m. at the Alcova Mt. Baptist Church with the Rev. John King officiating. Interment followed at Alcova Mt. Baptist Church Cemetery.

Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Mattie Lou Hollis
Mattie Lou Hollis, 91 of Social Circle, died on April 4, 2006. She was born in Walton County on June 22, 1914 to the late Walter Andrew Pittman and the late Myra Mae Lemmonds. She was preceded in death by her husband: the late Thomas Franklin Hollis; and her son : Thomas Marion Hollis. Surviving are: daughter and son-in-law: Betty and Billy Freeman, Social Circle; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Sandra O’Kelley Gregg

Sandra O’Kelley Gregg, of Covington, died April 1, 2006, at the age of 57.

She was the daughter of the late J.M. and Nettie Rose Towler O’Kelley, and the step-daughter of the late Betty Stephens O'Kelley. Mrs. Gregg was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, vacationing at the beach and spending time with her family and friends.

Mrs. Gregg is survived by her husband: Dave Gregg; daughters and son-in-law: Christy and Beta Burt, Jenny and James McKinnon; grandchildren: David Lynn Burt, Ashton Leah McKinnon, William Gregg McKinnon all of Covington; sister and brother-in-law: Linda and Ed Cardiff, Snellville; brother and sister-in-law: Ronnie and Carolyn O’Kelley, Covington; several nieces, nephews and many special friends.

Sheryl Ann Hanson Schmidt

Sheryl Ann Hanson Schmidt

Born in Loganville, GA, Mrs Schmidt was an honor graduate of Loganville High School.

She came from a long line of educators, and she, too, was an educator. She earned a B.S.Ed. in education from the University of Georgia, and later earned M.Ed. and Ed.S. degrees from Virginia Polytechnic. She taught in the Walton Co., GA, and the Fairfax Co., VA., schools, and later at George Mason University in Fairfax. her doctoral research dealt with meeting needs of the non-traditional student.

Mrs Schmidt’s death is mourned by husband Lee Schmidt, Herndon VA; daughter Melissa and Greg Depew, Richmond VA; son Evan Junker, Fairfax VA; granddaughter Megan Depew; mother Jacqueline Hodges Hanson, Loganville; siblings Anita Hanson Wheeler, Gainsville; and Robert Harry Hanson, Jr., Loganville; and nieces and nephews Juliet and Scott Nolde, Warner-Robins; Michael and Andrea Wheeler, Ellijay; Maria and Arnoldo Cavazos, Gainsville; and Jennifer Hanson, Snellville, great-nieces and nephews Carter Nolde, John Wheeler, and Olivia Cavazos. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Harry Hanson, Sr., and grandparents David Hammond and Vallie Stynchcombe Hodges of Loganville, and James Robert and Sallie Clegg Hanson of Monroe.

Wayne Peters, 54 of Madison, died on April 3, 2006.

He was born in Walton County on Jan. 17, 1952 to Mary Ruth Studdard Peters and the late James Ralph Peters.

Surviving are: wife: Patricia Peters, Madison; daughter and son-in-law: Leanne and Jason Lowen, Madison; son: Josh Peters, Madison; mother: Mary Ruth Peters, Madison; sister: Elaine Bridges, Madison; brother: Tim Peters, Madison.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 6 at 2 p.m. at Willow Springs Church with the Rev. J.C. Studdard officiating. Interment followed at Peters Family Cemetery.

Donald Hopkins
Donald Hopkins, 63 of Monroe, died on March, 2006. He was born in Morgan County, AL. on June 12, 1942 to the late Ruben E. Hopkins and the late Annie Mae Ledford Hopkins.Funeral services were held on Wednesday March 29 at 11am at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Russell Davis officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery.

Clara Jo Edwards Grimes, 72 of 173 Brookside Dr. Elberton, wife of Charles Grimes died Saturday March 18, 2006 at Abbeville Hospital. Born in Monroe, GA she was a daughter of the late James M. Edwards and Lois Holloway Edwards. She was a member of the Elberton First Baptist Church, a member of the Elberton Baptist Church Choir, and a bookkeeper for Grimes Brothers Granite Company.

Molean McDonald Hayes, 84 of Monroe, died Thursday, April 6, 2006.

Funeral Services were held at 2:30 pm, Sunday, April 9 in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. Lee Peters officiated. Burial was at Hill Haven Cemetery, Monroe.

Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her husband: Doc Hayes.

She was of the Baptist faith and is survived by daughters: Barbara Ivy, Elizabeth Collinsworth, Monroe; brother: Herschel McDonald, NC; sisters: Sara Frances Sheridan, VA; Mildred Childers, NC; nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Flowers accepted or memorials to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, Georgia 30025.

Tim Stewart Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Steven Sorrow

Steven Sorrow, age 28, died April 6, 2006.

He was a life long resident of Walton County, and was employed by Steam Fitter, and was a member of Local Union 72.

Mr. Sorrow was a member of Masonic Lodge Wellington # 467, enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was a wonderful son and father.

Mr. Sorrow is survived by his parents, James (Bugger) and Linda Allen Sorrow of Covington; daughter, Clara Ann Sorrow of Covington; grandmother, Clara Sorrow of Jersey; sister, Jamie Lynn Sorrow of Covington; special friend, Kerri Howard of Monroe; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral Services for Mr. Sorrow were held , Sunday, April 9,2006, at Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church in Porterdale, with the Rev. James A. Moore, Rev. John Ozley, and Wilbur Giles officiating.

Donations may be made to a fund for his daughter, Clara Ann Sorrow, at Newton Federal Bank. P.O. Box 1037 Covington, GA. 30015. Attn: Clara Ann Sorrow account.
