Mary Barrow, 32
Mary Barrow, age 32, passed away Wednesday evening, May 20, 2009, at The Doctors Hospital of Tattnall. Mary had lived in Florida, Glennville, and Silk Wood Group Home in Statesboro, prior to moving to Tattnall Healthcare in Reidsville a year ago. She loved country music, especially Alan Jackson, and loved drinking her Coke. She was preceded in death by her father, John H. Barrow.
She is survived by her sister, Vickie Barrow, of Reidsville; brother, John N. Barrow of Dublin and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 23 from the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, with Rev. Tom Elliott officiating. Interment followed in the Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Glennville.

George Mack Bird Jr., 81
George Mack Bird Jr., 81, of Metter died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at his home. A Candler County native, he was the son of George Mack Bird Sr. and Lennie Helm Bird. He served his country in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Joe Hudson Bird and a sister, Virginia B. Snell.
Mr. Bird was a 1952 graduate of the Southern School of Pharmacy in Atlanta. After graduation, he returned to Metter to his father’s pharmacy, Bird Drug Company. He owned and operated Bird’s Pharmacy until his retirement in 1998. He was a landowner who enjoyed farming in his spare time and was a member of the Metter United Methodist Church.
He served as a director of Pineland State Bank from 1962 - 1998 and was a Master Mason for more than 50 years in the Metter Lodge #435. George M. was a member of the Metter Horse and Saddle Club and owned many Futurity horses. In1963, he was honored by Governor Carl E. Sanders as an appointee as Lieutenant Colonel, Aide De Camp of Governor’s Staff.
Mr. Bird is survived by his wife, Marcile Hooks Bird; a son, Dr. Mack Bird of Eastman; a daughter and son - in - law, Lennie and Norman Boatwright of Florence, SC; seven grandchildren, Ike Boatwright, Julia Boatwright, Haley Bird, Hilary Bird, Geordy Bird, Macy Bird, Marci Bird Overstreet and Libby Bird Overstreet.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 22, 2009, at the Metter Primitive Baptist Church with Elder John Sheldon Mikell and Elder Ron Yeakle officiating. Burial followed in the Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Carvy Snell, Bird Snell, Steven Snell, Dr. Vendie Hooks, Jones Hooks, Jerry Hooks, Evans Hooks, Judd Hooks, and Dr. Terrell Underwood. Jason Cox, 34
Jason Cox, 34, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Long County. The Bulloch County native has lived in Evans and Tattnall counties most of his life. He was a 1993 graduate of Pinewood Christian Academy and was employed as a millwright with Weyerhauser Corporation in Savannah. He loved bull riding and was a S.E.C.A. Champion in 2003 and 2004. He was a member of Union Methodist Church. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clifford and Myrtle Cox and maternal grandfather, Denny Denmark.
He is survived by his wife, Tracey Cox of Glennville; children, Eli and Ava Cox of Glennville; parents, James (Jimmy) and Cindy Cox of Claxton; maternal grandmother, Alice Denmark of Vero Beach, FL; brothers and sisters - in - law, James Jr. and Tonya Cox of Claxton and John and Nicole Cox of Glennville; mother - in - law and father - in - law, Bill and Anita Whitson of Glennville; sisters - in - law and brothers - in - law, Sherri and Doug Sewall of Dayton, OH, Pamela and Alan McAdams of St. Augustine, FL and Paula and Don Lightfoot of Ormond Beach, FL; nine nieces and two nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 6 p.m., at Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 29, at 11 a.m., at Union Methodist Church, with Reverend John Ryan officiating. Burial will be private.
Pallbearers will be James Cox Jr., John Cox, Saulo Encarnacion, Tyler Dowd, Jeff Mumby and Archie Smiley. Honorary pallbearer will be Michael Cox, Newt Wallace, Jason Wamba, Nino Ciccone, Lance Grant, Steve Guzan and Corey Young.

Judge John R. Harvey, 73
Judge John R. Harvey, age 73, died Monday morning at Hospice Savannah while surrounded by his family. Judge Harvey was a 1953 graduate of Bryan County High School and a 1957 graduate of the University of Georgia. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the infantry division in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1963. After his military service, he came home and practiced law in Pembroke. During his early career, Judge Harvey served as the attorney for Pembroke State Bank and the Bryan County School Board. He represented both International Paper and Seaboard Railroad, and he served as Solicitor General for Bryan County. He also served as Bryan County’s attorney and the city attorney for both Pembroke and Richmond Hill. In 1974, Governor Jimmy Carter appointed Judge Harvey to the Superior Court of the Atlantic Judicial Circuit where he served for more than 30 years. Judge Harvey was a life - long member of Ellabell United Methodist Church and was predeceased by his parents Will C. and Ruthie Lee Harvey.
Survivors include his wife of over 32 years, Mrs. Olivia Harvey of Pembroke; two sons and daughters - in - law Brian and Misty Harvey of Claxton and John D. and Michelle Harvey of Richmond Hill; one brother and sister - in - law, Harold and Sylvia Harvey of Cumming, GA; and one sister and brother - in - law Betty and Gene Head of Anthem, AZ; 3 grandchildren Allison, Daniel and Ella Harvey; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 3 - 9 p.m. at Flanders Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Pembroke with interment to follow in Lower Black Creek Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Judge Jay Stewart, Judge Paul Rose, Judge David L. Cavender, Judge Robert L. James Willis “J.W.” Lanier Sr., 78
James Willis “J.W.” Lanier Sr., 78, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at his home. The Tattnall County native returned home 15 years ago from Goose Creek, SC. J.W. was a truck driver for Hess Oil Company for 25 years and a member of the Connors Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ouida R. Lanier.
He is survived by three sons, James Lanier Jr. and Larry Lanier both of Cobbtown and Paul Lanier of Savannah; a daughter and son - in - law, Ann and Tim Rehrig of Moncks Corner, SC; three brothers, Buddy Lanier of Lebanon, TN, Wayne Lanier of Black River Falls, WI and Bryant Lanier of Lyons; a sister, Carolyn Bragg of Reidsville; three granddaughters, Lori Cribbs, Dana Ross and Michelle Lanier; and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with the Rev. Sterling Bargeron and Rev. Carl Ledbetter officiating. Burial followed in the Cedar Creek Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mike Lanier, Buddy Collins, Marvin Dixon, Jay Bragg and George Brown.

Dorothy Harlow Lunsford, 88
Mrs. Dorothy Harlow Lunsford, 88, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, in Reidsville, GA. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Minnie VanPelt Harlow. Her husband, Everett P. Lunsford, Sr., preceded her in death.
Mrs. Lunsford was born in Chattooga County on May 20, 1921. She is survived by a son, Everett P. Lunsford Jr. of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Miriam L. Lynn, son - in - law, Dr. Steve Lynn, granddaughter, Beth Lynn, of Reidsville, GA; and sister - and brother - in - law Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Brooks of Griffin, GA. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Tift College, Forsyth, GA in 1942, Mrs. Lunsford taught school in the Rome City System, Trion City System, and Chattooga County School System. She retired after more than 30 years and became director of the Adult Education Program at the Parent - Child Center and Chattooga County Library. She loved teaching and helping others in any way she could. Her greatest delight was in helping students attain their GED.
Since 1932, she has been an active member of the Summerville First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School in children and adult departments. She was a member of the Joy Club and Women’s Missionary Circle.
Mrs. Lunsford was former member of the Chattooga County Library Board, a trustee of Camp Juliette Low in Cloudland, GA, a trustee of Summerville cemetery Association and a member of Georgia Retired Teachers Association.
Visitation will be held at the Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville, GA, on Saturday, May 30, 2009 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. A graveside service and interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.

Nolan Lester Reich, 89
Nolan Lester Reich, 89, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, at his residence, under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice and his family. The Detroit, MI, native had lived in Dearborn, MI, for many years prior to moving to Tattnall County in 1982. He was a WWII Army Veteran and was retired from the construction industry as a cement finisher. He was a member and deacon of Gospel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Rewis Reich of Reidsville; nieces and nephews, Myrtice and Jerry Cox, Michael Shuman, Phillip Shuman, Celeste Colllins and Jessica Willis.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Gospel Baptist Church in Claxton. Burial followed in Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Donald Akins, Tommy Wilkes, Carson “Rock” Sands, Mike Shuman, Dale Dutton and Scotty Roundtree. Honorary pallbearers were the men of Gospel Baptist Church of Claxton.

Arnie Layton (Lakey) Rowe, 64
Arnie Layton (Lakey) Rowe, 64, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his residence in Reidsville.
The Evans County native had resided most of his life in Tattnall County. He retired from the telephone and cable industry and was of the Methodist faith. He was an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Rowe of Reidsville; one son and daughter - in - law, Van and Shannon Rowe of Dallas, GA; one daughter and son in law, Valarie and Stephen Ward of Rincon, GA; two brothers, Terry Rowe of Hagan, GA, and Thomas Rowe of St. Augustine, FL; two half brothers, Anthony Dunn and Chuck Dunn; three step daughters, Donna Kurtz and Stephanie and Becky Johnson; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 23, 2009, from the Chapel of J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton, with Pastor Bill Eller officiating. Burial followed in Brewton Cemetery.

Jack D. Dubberly, 82
Jack D. Dubberly, 82, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, at his residence surrounded by his family. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a World War II Army Combat Veteran with the 3rd Infantry Division. He was retired from Civil Service at Ft. Stewart and the Georgia Army National Guard. He was an accomplished salt and freshwater fisherman and a longtime member of the Glennville First Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Maggie Dubberly; first wife, Helen Smith Dubberly and sister, Ellaree Dubberly.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Dubberly of Glennville; children, Mike and Fran Dubberly of Manassas, VA, Pat and Donna Dubberly of Glennville, and Cindy and Drew Glista of Annadale, VA; sister, Sybil Lynn of Jesup; brother and sister - in - law, Robert and Joan Dubberly of Glennville; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Eller officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Rev. Gilbert Thress, 89
Rev. Gilbert Thress, age 89, passed away Thursday afternoon, May 14, 2009, at his residence under the care of his family and Southern Care Hospice. The Ohio native had retired from Koffman Staircase Company and was a World War II Veteran who had served in the US Army. His passion was doing the nursing home ministry and he was a member of the Rome Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Sarah Thress of Reidsville; two daughters and sons - in - law, Mildred and Jim Pickell of Ohio, and Paula and Harvey Van Bibber of Reidsville; four brothers, Georgie and Rose Thress, Lorenzo “Shorty” and Jean Thress,
Jack Thress and Albert Thress Jr., all of Ohio; five grandchildren, Jay and Mike Detillion, Brandy Van Bibber, Scott Pickell and Shelly Dowler; ten great - grandchildren, Megan, Susan, Christopher, Tazz, Cassie, Kevin, Leann, Isaiah, Owen, and Olivia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 18, 2009, from the Chapel with the Rev. David Moxley officiating. Interment followed in the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery in Glennville.
