Nellie Martin Reese, 74

Ms. Nellie Martin Reese, age 74, passed away Monday morning under the care of her family and Community Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in Toombs County most of her life. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Henry Reese.
She is survived by: her daughter, Ann Reese Vogt of Vidalia; two sons, Randy H. Reese of Reidsville and Raymond T. Reese of Lyons; sister, Ellen Smith of Scott, GA; brother, Maxwell Martin of Lyons; six grandchildren, Michelle and Tammie Reese of Atlanta and Michael and Dustin Kidd of Vidalia, Evelyn Denise Rock of Neptune, NJ, and Belinda Runa Byrd of Vidalia; two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were E. Anthony Johnson, Johnny Pierce, Philip Germano, Mitch Newman, David Newman, and Curtis Fields.
Funeral Services were conducted Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Speaker Cedric Johnson officiated. Interment followed in the Little Flock Church Cemetery.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home is serving the Reese Family.

Eric Michael Shackelford, 18

Eric Michael Shackelford, 18, died Tuesday, February 10, 2009, after a car accident. Eric was born in Statesboro and was a senior at Metter High School, ready to graduate in May and join the Marine Corps. He was a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church, enjoyed following NASCAR and his driver was Dale Jr. He also loved to play basketball and watching the Georgia Bulldogs, where he would put on his game day attire and cheer the DAWGS to victory. He was predeceased by his mom, Melissa Lynn Bonnette Shackelford.
He is survived by his father, Bert Shackelford and Mama Dee of Metter; maternal grandmother, Kay Bonnett of Metter; maternal grandfather, Gerald Bonnett of Cobbtown; paternal grandparents, Herbert and Evelyn Shackelford; step grandparents, Danny and Joanna Cardell of Metter; uncle, Gerald Bonnet Jr. of Jasper, TN; cousins, Jessica Mack, Troy Copeland, Justin Bonnette, Tori Hutson and Ty Hutson.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 13, 2009, at New Life Baptist Church with burial following in the Fair Haven United Methodist Church cemetery near Millen.
Kennedy - Morgan - Brannen Funeral Home, Metter - Cobbtown, was in charge of the arrangements.

Elise Collins Shook, 81

Mrs. Elise Collins Shook, 81, of Metter died Thursday, February 12, 2009, at Azalea Health and Rehab. The Evans County native lived in Savannah many years before moving to Metter 30 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the Gospel Baptist Temple in Claxton. Elise was preceded in death by her husband, Billy P. Shook, a brother, Buford Collins and three sisters, Betty Whitehead, Lucille Burns and Letha B. Odom.
She is survived by two sons, William Feehley, Haslet, TX, and George Feehley of Savannah; two daughters, Jan Kilpatrick of Snellville and Kathy Boggs of Catawaba, NC; two sisters, Lynette Schoenwalder of Jacksonville, NC, and Mary L. Collins of The Villages, FL; 13 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including George Odom, Gene Odom, Gynette DeLoach, Dixie Odom and Bobby Odom, all of Metter.
Funeral services were held Saturday, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Royce Mosley officiating. Burial followed in the Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gene Odom, Bobby Odom, Butch DeLoach, Owen Odom, Buddy Sikes and Matt Odom

Harrison Eric Storey, 17

Harrison Eric Storey, 17, died Tuesday, February 10, 2009, after a car accident. Eric was born in Toombs County and was a senior at Metter High School, hoping to attend college and study to become an electrical engineer. He was a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church, loved sports especially basketball and weight lifting, loved playing guitar, singing and riding dirt roads. He was very much a people person and a good - natured child. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Coy H. Holland and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn Sikes.
He is survived by his father, Timmy Sikes; mother, Kathy Storey of Metter; paternal grandfather, John (Pop) Sikes of Metter; step - sister, Cori Reese and step - brother, Al Sikes of Metter; girlfriend, Victoria Barringer of Metter; uncle and aunt, Jeff and Susan Holland of Register; cousins, Britney, Brooke and Jamey Holland of Register; niece and nephew, John Riley Parham and Cooper Miley Sikes and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 14, 2009, at Cedar Street Baptist Church, with burial following at Lake Cemetery.
Kennedy - Morgan - Brannen Funeral Home, Metter - Cobbtown, was in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Sumner, 60

Mrs. Helen Sumner, 60, of Adrian died Sunday, February 15, 2009.
Mrs. Sumner was born in Evans County and was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Maybell Williams Boyett, and brother, J. E. Boyett. She was a member of Blackville Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Sumner; children, Sharon Denise (David) Hudson, and Paul (Katie) Nesmith, of Brooklet, Wayne Sumner, Myrtle Beach, SC, Jeff Sumner, Lawrenceville, GA; four sisters, Lois Ann Boyett and Kay Jernigan, of Claxton, Jean Terrell, Glennville, Connie Norton, Raleigh, NC; seven brothers, Earl, Jerry, and Wayne Boyett, of Reidsville, Gary and Floyd Boyett, of Claxton, Carl Boyett of Henderson, NC, Joe Neil Boyett of McDonough; five grandchildren, Tiffany and Brantley Nesmith, Brandon, Ryan and Jason Hudson.
Services were held in Blackville Church of God, Wednesday, February 18, with the Reverend Ashley Way officiating. Burial followed in Kea’s Cemetery, Emanuel County, with Sammons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Chris, Matthew, Jeremy, Corey, and Brandon Boyette, and Brad Jernigan.

Merle Bradley Waters, 95

Merle Bradley Waters, 95, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family. The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident was a retired supervisor at Claxton Manufacturing Company. Mrs. Waters was a member of the Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church, an avid fisherman and loved watching her soap operas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Blois Waters; a son, Derril Waters; two great grandchildren, Chase E. Smith and Kelsey Sapp.
Survivors are three daughters and sons - in - law, Joyce W. Sapp, Mary W. and J.C. Collins all of Claxton, Jackie and Lavanda Lynn of Collins; a sister, Voncile Andrews of Vidalia; ten grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, five great - great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church with both Elder Steve Taylor and Elder Tom Deal officiating . Burial followed in the Cedar Creek Cemetery. Great grandsons served as pallbearers.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Evelyn B. Brown, 95

Mrs. Evelyn B. Brown, 95, died Sunday January 25, 2009, at the Candler County Hospital after an extended illness. She was a native and life long resident of Candler County and a member of the Metter Primitive Baptist Church for over 50 years. Mrs. Evelyn enjoyed gardening, cooking and tending her cattle.
She was predeceased by her husband, Otis M. Brown; daughter, Marilyn Faye Brown, three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors: a son and daughter - in - law, Jimmy Ray and Vivian Brown of Metter, sisters: Zedan Glisson of Canton and Martha Ruth Faircloth of Spartanburg SC, grandchildren: Dondra (Benjie) Rigdon and Tonya (William) Bird of Metter, and Railey and Ben Rigdon, Madison, and Mally Bird
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 27, 2009, in the chapel with burial following in the Lake Cemetery.

Eleanor Cowart Hardee, 68

Eleanor Cowart Hardee, 68, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009, at Community Hospice Center in Vidalia. The Tattnall County native had lived in Appling County for the past 15 years. She was a retired seamstress from Douglas - Harper in Baxley. She was a homemaker and a member of VFW post in Baxley and Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Collins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Ila Mae Cowart and a brother, Eddie Dale Cowart.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Hardee of Baxley; children, Tina Piper, Tommy Wiggins and Alicia Hendrix, all of North Carolina; brothers and sister - in - law, Gilbert Cowart of Glennville and Kermit and Ruth Cowart of Egypt, GA; sister, Gwen Dennis of Collins; five grandchildren, one great - grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 9, 2009, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Moore officiating. Burial followed in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Matt Cowart, Bill Bacon, Cody Bacon, Johnny Cowart, Stacy Sanders and Stephen Lanier.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of the arrangements.

Sarah Madine Waters Hill, 96

Sarah Madine Waters Hill, 96, was born October 27, 1912, to George Russell Waters and Hester DeLoach Waters of Bulloch County, GA. She passed away on February 8, 2009.
She had a total of nine brothers and sisters and graduated from Statesboro High School. On March 24, 1933, she married Wallace C. Hill Sr. and they moved to Reidsville, GA, where he was working as the manager of the Sims Grocery store. Sarah was always involved in the business they ran together over the 60 years of marriage. They operated the Sims Grocery Store, Hills Grocery, and S & W Cleaners. While helping out at the store, she started a small sewing business that she enjoyed. In between, Sarah managed the Railway Express/Western Union Telegraph office and served as the American Red Cross Blood Drive Coordinator for Reidsville and the surrounding areas. She worked as a receptionist at Claxton Manufacturing for several years before retiring. In November 2007, she moved to North Springs Assisted Living in Claxton.
She was always interested in the Reidsville Community and was a long time member of the Reidsville Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School in the early years and participating in the choir until 2007. She was a member of the Reidsville Garden Club. She enjoyed china painting and sewing.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Wallace C. Hill Sr. and her daughter Sandra Hill Lanier. Surviving family members are sisters Mildred Mikell, (Shelton), Maxann Smith, Lois Overstreet; son, Wallace C. Hill Jr. (Becky), son - in - law, Carl Jack Lanier Jr., grandchildren, Eric Hill (Mell), Jennifer Cowhig (Rob), Carl Jack Lanier III (Maria) and Michael Lanier; great grandchildren, Amelia and Nicholas Lanier, Emma Hill, Amelia and Eleanor Cowhig, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Red Cross or Ogeechee Area Hospice, PO Box 531, Statesboro, GA.
Funeral services were held at the Reidsville Baptist Church, Wednesday, February 11. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Viola H. Rogers, 83

Viola H. Rogers, 83, passed away February 8, 2009, after a long illness.
The Johnson County native had lived most of her life in Claxton. She was a member of Bull Creek Baptist Church. She retired from Tippins Bank and Trust, as a cashier, after 47 years of service.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Leo C. Rogers of Claxton; son, Leo H. Rogers (Sarah) of Claxton; a daughter, Angela (Bobby) Harden of Reidsville; brothers, Yome Lee Heath, Jr., of Dublin and Andy Heath of Sylvania; sisters, Linnie Rauwald of Wisconsin and Shirley Johnson of Augusta, Lorene Beasley of Lithia Springs, GA; Mattie Walker of Dublin; grandchildren, Melanie and Jason Stark, Melissa Harden, Lori and Josh Smith and Luke Rogers; great - grandchildren, Drew and Alex Stark; a dear brother and sister - in - law, Joe and Alice Rogers and sister - in - law, Mary Wanda Rogers and Helen Rogers Burks of Shellman Bluff.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home, with Reverend Harold Smith and Reverend Marc Foster officiating. Burial followed in Bull Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton was in charge of the arrangements.
