John Fox Dryden, 58
John Fox Dryden, age 58, passed away Saturday morning at his residence from injuries sustained in a house fire. The Massachusetts native had lived in Kentucky many years before moving to Augusta three years ago.
He is survived by his mother, Vivian Dryden of Reidsville; aunt, Ruth Lavalley of Springfield, MA, special friend and caretaker, Robert Staley of Augusta and several cousins and other relatives also survive.
Funeral Services will be private in Augusta.

Michael Guido, 94
Michael Guido, known affectionately around the world as “The Sower” is now in heaven rejoicing with old friends and new acquaintances whom he met for the first time as a result of his life - long ministry. Quietly, on Saturday, February 21, 2009, after a final, peaceful day in Candler County Hospital, and surrounded by family and friends, he slipped gently and gracefully into the presence of His Lord and Saviour. His life was grounded in a selfless ministry which he shared completely with his beloved Audrey, his wife of sixty - six years. Together they traveled extensively throughout the United States, conducting evangelistic crusades until they were involved in a near - fatal automobile accident. Following a lengthy stay in an Atlanta hospital, God moved in their hearts to begin a radio ministry while returning to Metter, Georgia.
From that seemingly simple decision, a radio program is now broadcast on 435 radio stations and has evolved in to a television ministry that is carried on one hundred television stations as well as cable and satellite systems and the Armed Forces Radio and Television Network. Each month nearly 32, 000 homes receive Sower publications, and the popular “Seeds From the Sower” is published in over 1, 500 newspapers. Wikipedia states that Metter, Georgia, “may best be known as the home of ‘The Sower’ who has delivered short evangelical PSAs on late - night television shows Nationwide for decades. His studios are located here at Guido Gardens, where a large holiday light show takes place each Christmas season. The multiple camera angles and delightful introduction music in his commercials are of high acclaim.”
Although 94 years old at the time of his death, Mr. Guido was working on three new projects. One was a cartoon strip for children, another was a crisis ministry intervention team that would be available to respond to accidents, natural disasters and emergency situations wherever they occur. However, his most important concern in the last moments of his life was for his Guido Center for Christian Training. He deeply believed that training others to do what he did in ministry and in serving His Lord would be the greatest legacy he could leave. His final vision was to construct a classroom for the Center and name it the Audrey F. Guido Educational Building. In fact, the final prayer that he prayed in public with two of his friends was that, “God would give me this mountain to train soul - winners.” To accomplish his dream, the Ministry is suggesting that donations to build the facility be made to the Guido Evangelistic Association in lieu of flowers.
There will be a viewing of Dr. Guido in the Hamstra Worship Center on the campus of Guido Gardens on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. A service of praise and worship for the countless “Friends of the Sower” is scheduled for Sunday, March 1, 2009, at 3 p.m. in a tent that will be erected on the Campus. “Mr. Michael” is survived by his wife, Audrey, and Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence Guido, his brother and “sister - in - love.” “Larry” is his successor and the president of the Guido Evangelistic Association.
Janie Rewis Collins Jernigan, 94
Janie Rewis Collins Jernigan, 94, died Saturday, February 21, 2009, at the Azalea Health and Rehab in Metter. Mrs. Janie was the oldest member of Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church near Collins where she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and had served as church clerk. She worked several years at the Candler County Hospital, enjoyed sewing, gardening, and loved spending time with family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Joe Jernigan; her parents, Virgil and Elizabeth Saturday Collins; two brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include her daughter, Maurice McCranie; sister and brother - in - law Mary and Clifford Barbee of Jacksonville, FL; granddaughter, Angie (Dan) Henderson and great granddaughter Janie Eudell Henderson, all of Metter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 23, in the chapel with burial following in the Lake Cemetery.

Eunice Sands Jones, 85
Eunice Sands Jones, 85, passed away Monday, February 16, 2009, at Magnolia Manor on St. Simons Island. A Tattnall County native, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Rosa Sands and the loving spouse of J. Earl Jones, also a Tattnall County native, who preceded her in death.
Following Mr. Jones’ career with CSX Railroad, which took the couple to Dothan, AL; Waycross, GA and Jacksonville, FL, Mr. and Mrs. Jones returned to their family farm in Glennville in l979. She was a homemaker who loved to bake and was an avid gardener. Her family took great delight in the wonderful cakes and other delicious treats she often turned out in the kitchen. The Jones property in Glennville was well known to be beautifully landscaped with begonias, roses, daylilies and other colorful flowers in bloom. She graduated from Glennville High School, where she was Salutatorian.
She is survived by her daughter and son - in - law, Miriam J. and Reverend Dr. Felix Haynes of St. Simons Island; son and daughter - in - law, Robert E. and Peggy Jones of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Kimberly H. Johnson, Kenneth S. Haynes, Margaret E. Jones and Andrew C. Jones; six great - grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews from the Sands and Jones family.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 21, 2009, from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville, with the Reverend Dr. Felix W. Haynes Jr. officiating. Mrs. Jones was interred beside her husband and members of the Sands family in Glennville City cemetery immediately following the service.
Pallbearers were Jackie Dasher, Mike Lamb, Jay Folsom, Andy Jones, Louis Geiger and Ken Haynes.

David W. Scarborough, 57
Dr. David W. Scarborough, 57, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2009. He was born and raised in Dublin, GA. He was a 1971 graduate of McCallie Military School in Chattanooga, TN; a 1975 graduate of the University of Georgia and a 1979 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia. He practiced medicine in a number of the surrounding areas, including Rome, Statesboro, Glennville, Savannah and Jesup.
He was an avid outdoorsman, as he liked to fish and hunt.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Joan Scarborough.
He is survived by one brother, Donald Scarborough of St. Simons; one sister, Diana Scarborough of St. Simons; companion and special friends, Wanda Hendrix and the Hendrix family and Ken Whitaker of Statesboro.
Memorial services were held Saturday, February 21, 2009, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel.

James Willie Smith, 95
James Willie Smith, 95, of Excelsior died Sunday, February 22, 2009, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. The Candler County native lived in Savannah several years before moving back to the Excelsior Community. He was a member of the Excelsior Baptist Church and a former song leader. Mr. Smith was a decorated Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He worked in Civil Service and was a farmer.
Willie was known for his love for the children in Excelsior. He was an avid gardener who shared his vegetables and spread humor throughout the community. He loved to hunt and fish, although his sporting methods sometimes pushed the law to the limit. He and his beloved wife, Mattie Lou, were married
51 years before her death in 2007.
Survivors are his son and daughter - in - law, Jonathan and Paulette Smith of Excelsior; two daughters and sons - in - law, Glynda and Jerry Garner of St. Simons, Gail and Jalvis Motes of Metter; a sister - in - law, Bobbie Smith of Metter; four grandchildren, April Motes Kemp of Charleston, SC, Jamey Motes of Excelsior, Polly Smith of Milledgeville and Will Smith of Excelsior; four great grandchildren, Christian Mercer, Kinsley Kemp, Kiley Kemp and Makenzie Motes.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at the Excelsior Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Sykora and Pastor Mike Holt officiating. Burial followed in the Excelsior cemetery with full military honors being observed.
Pallbearers were Jason Franklin, Benjamin Franklin, Jay Franklin, Simon Neville, John Allen Smith and Tracy Akins.

Mrs. Grace Morgan Spikes, age 78, passed away Thursday afternoon, February 19, 2009, at her residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Pooler for the past 38 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Church of God in Savannah for the past 40 years. She was also a member of the Golden Apple Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry and Eva Mae Morgan; her husband, Willie Sanford Spikes and a brother, Cleve Morgan.
She is survived by: three daughters and son - in - law, Gwen Spikes and Sandra Stanhope both of Pooler, and Deborah and Benjamin Curtis of Charlotte, NC; three sons and a daughter - in - law, Dennis Spikes of Brooklet, Randy Spikes and Brian and Tiffanie Spikes all of Pooler; a sister and brother - in - law, Betty and Bill Jones of Sylvania; five brothers and sisters - in - law, Archie and Frances Morgan, Wilbert and Ruby Morgan, Elton Morgan all of Lyons, Leroy and Jean Morgan of Savannah and Otis Morgan of Richmond Hill; three grandchildren, James and Lacey Stanhope of Rincon, Amber and Arron Frady of Mooresville, NC; one great - granddaughter, Hailey Stanhope of Rincon; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.
Funeral Services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the Holy Church of God, with interment following in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Austin Clay Zerwig, 1
Austin Clay Zerwig, who just celebrated his first birthday on February 3, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, due to an accidental drowning. Our sweet baby boy has gone to be with his heavenly Father. Though our time was cut short, we will see him again soon. We love you our sweet baby boy. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dylan Zerwig; maternal great grandfather, Robert Tuten; paternal great grandfather, Carl Zerwig, and paternal great grandmother, Rosemary Naeger.
Austin is survived by his loving parents, Randy and Holly Zerwig; brothers, Dustin and Cody Zerwig; a sister, Abigail Zerwig; maternal grandparents, Marcia Hall and Jerry Hall both of Metter; paternal grandparents, Carol and Daniel Zerwig of Ste. Genevieve, MO; maternal great grandparents, Margie Tuten of Guyton; paternal great grandparents, Rita Zerwig and Valentine Naeger, both of Missouri; aunts and uncles, Keith and Lisa Zerwig, Mark and Shawna Zerwig and Stacey Zerwig all from Missouri; several great aunts and uncles and cousins.

Irdell Nails - Bailey, 94
Mrs. Irdell Nails - Bailey, 94, was born May 8, 1914, to the late Mary Etta Tippins - Nails and the late Jack Nails, in Tattnall County, Georgia. She married
the late F.R. Bailey who preceded her in death. She remained a member of St. Phillips where she worked faithfully until her illness. She departed this life on February 12, 2009, at the Doctor’s Hospital of Tattnall in Reidsville, Georgia, after spending 11 years at Tattnall Health Care Nursing Home in Reidsville, Georgia.
She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish fond memories, a daughter - in - law, Connie Nails Purdiman of Reidsville; three grandchildren, Victor (Letha)Nails, Jr., Vincent Nails (special friend Kayla Mincey) and Vikitha Nails, all of Reidsville; two great - grandchildren, Victoria Nails and Vikeeli Nails; (a loving paternal grandmother of the late Victor Nails, Sr.) Gertrude Betterson of Vinland, New Jersey; very special nieces, Connie Questell and Margarite Bennett; nephew, Arlie Giles, all of Bronx, New York and other great nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at 11 a.m., at St. Phillips Baptist Church in Reidsville, GA, with Reverend Artis Carswell officiating. Burial followed in Sandhill Cemetery.

Lillian Diane King, 42
Lillian Diane King, 42, was born September 16, 1966, in East St. Louis, Illinois, She was the daughter of late Moses and Rebecca Holman. She received her formal education in the East St. Louis School Districts, in E. St Louis, IL. She is a 1984 graduate of East St. Louis Senior High School in Illinois. After graduation she attended classes at Belleville Area College, Belleville, IL.
Lillian left her hometown in Illinois to pursue her dreams in Virginia and was united in Holy Matrimony to Rex King. Two children were born to this union. Her family was one of her greatest joys in life.
She was employed with Atlantic Orthopedic Specialist and worked at various medical facilities throughout the years. She was a student at the University of Phoenix pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration.
Lillian accepted Christ as her Personal Savior at an early age and held to her faith until her last day on earth. She was an active member of the Faith in Action Holiness Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
On Tuesday, February 10, 2009, God sent for his angel to come home. She was called to rest in the comfort of her home.
