Mavis Huggins, 84

Mavis Huggins, 84, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Panama native had lived in Miami, FL, before moving to Glennville two and a half years ago. She was an accountant and of the Catholic faith.
She is survived by her sisters, Leouor White and Maria Hulbert, both of Glennville and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial funeral services will be held Friday, December 12, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the Glennville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Onita Carter Hutchinson, 82

Onita Carter Hutchinson, 82, died Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Azalea Health and Rehab in Metter under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born in Montgomery County, the daughter of the late Joseph and Essie Mae Taylor Carter and raised in Cobbtown. Nita retired after 25 years with Kress Department Store in Savannah and moved back to Cobbtown in 1982. She was a member of the Cobbtown Baptist Church and the widow of Mitchell A. Hutchinson.
Survivors are a daughter, Beverly Jones of Reidsville; four sons, Mitchell Hutchinson, Jr. (Teresa) of Savannah, Richard Hutchinson (Sonya) of Brooklet, Wayne Hutchinson (Debbie) of Bulloch County and Kelvin Hutchinson of Cobbtown; two sisters, Willene Monroe of Cobbtown and Marian Davis of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Roger Carter of Metter; 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Andy Haman officiating. Burial followed in the Lake Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Remembrances may be made to the Cobbtown Baptist Church, POB176, Cobbtown, GA, 30420.

Michael Shawn Powell, 31

Michael Shawn Powell, 31, died Sunday, December 7, 2008, from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was born in Beaufort, SC, and lived all his life in Cobbtown. He was a welder with JBI Contracting in Oak Park and a member of the
Lower Corinth Baptist Church. Michael loved being with his family, fishing, being a craftsman, and was a jokester.
He is survived by his wife; Bobbie Jo Collins Powell, sons, Gage Powell of Cobbtown, Dalton Powell and Luke Johnson, both of Collins; step - sons, Trevor and Austin Hutto of Cobbtown; father, James W. Powell of Beaufort, SC; mother, Terry Sewell Ray of Vidalia; step - father, Robert Bowen of Vidalia; maternal grandmother, Melba Sewell Gerrald of Cobbtown and paternal grandmother, Nora Powell of Beaufort, SC.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at Kennedy
Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Tim Brantley officiating. Burial followed in the Sunlight Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brian Kennedy, Waylon Guthrie, Jimmy Braddy, Johnny Rowe, Danny Humphrey and Mark Monroe.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

George E. Scott, age 67

George E. Scott, age 67, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Candler County Hospital in Metter. The Burke County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He worked many years for the Georgia Forestry Commission and retired from Derst Baking Company after 30 years of service. He was a former member of the Reidsville Jaycees and the Reidsville High School Booster Club. He loved his church, the Reidsville United Methodist Church. He played many rolls in the church and was a former member of the Choir and the Administrative Board. He was very instrumental in planning the new kitchen at the church and currently was a member of the Lillian Eason Sunday School Class and the Methodist Men. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend George Roy Scott and Georgia Anderson Scott; brothers, Wiley and Charles Scott; and a beloved sister - in - law, Faye Fulford Scott.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dale Elders Scott of Reidsville; a daughter, Kathryn Scott of Reidsville; two sons and daughters - in - law, Tennyson Wade & Luvis Scott of Reidsville, Herschel Clinton Scott of Sandersville and Katrina C. Scott of Richmond Hill; three sisters, Martha Flanders of Kite, Paulette Scott and Deborah Scott both of Reidsville; a brother and sister - in - law, James David and Delores Scott of Reidsville; seven grandchildren, Thomas Aaron Williams of Arkansas, Paige Leigh Scott, Draven Andrew Scott and Charlize Isabela Scott all of Reidsville, Christopher Hodges and Krystal Carter both of Richmond Hill, and Kyle Thomas of Arkansas; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 9, 2008, from the Reidsville United Methodist Church with the Reverends Marc Foster and David Hudson officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Scott, Johnny Scott, Kenny Scott, Terry Futch, Josh Scott, Telford Wood, Sean Lynn, Steve Flanders. Honorary pallbearers were members of The Lillian Eason Sunday School Class and the Methodist Men’s Club.
Memorials may be made to the: Reidsville United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 218 Reidsville, GA 30453.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home of Reidsville was in charge of services.

Keith Wardwell, 92

Keith Wardwell, 92, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Community Hospice Inpatient Center in Vidalia. The Michigan native had lived in Toombs County for the past two and a half years. He retired from General Motors Corporation with 25 years of service and graduated from Michigan State University. He was a Navy Veteran with 14 years of service, a VFW American Legion Member and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel D. Wardwell of Lyons; daughter and son - in - law, Sandra and James Sikes of Lyons; sister - in - law, Ruth Wardwell of Holt, MI; grandchildren, Charlton and Tracy Calhoun and Chris Calhoun; great grandchildren, Conner and Tyler Calhoun and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church cemetery with Dr. Rick Cason officiating.

Louise Lanier West, 87

Louise Lanier West, 87, died Monday, December 8, 2008, at Ogeechee Area Hospice. The native and life long resident of the Evergreen Community was a faithful member of the Evergreen Baptist Church for 71 years. Mrs. Louise loved cooking; working in her yard, and sewing, especially for her children and grandchildren, and one of her favorite things to do was to go shad fishing with her husband.
Survivors: daughters and sons - in - law: Judy (Felix) Johnston, Karen (Al) Bland, Dianne (Stan) Fordham all of Metter; son: Dennis West of Dublin; sisters: Vernon Anderson of Evergreen Community and Eunice Callaway of Collins, and special family member Janice Sapp; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11:00 Thursday December 11, 2008, at the Evergreen Baptist Church with burial to be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Candler County Hospital, PO Box 597, Metter, GA 30439, or Ogeechee Area Hospice 200 Donehoo St., Statesboro, GA 30458, or American Cancer Society.

Medra Todd Akins, 82

Medra Todd Akins, 82, died peacefully on November 28, 2008. Medra was born in Glennville on August 24, 1926, one of 11 children of Pledger and Leona Todd. She graduated from Glennville High School class of 1944 where she was a star basketball player. She married the love of her life, Martin R. Akins of Glennville, July 28, 1944, then moved to Miami, FL, where they created a wonderful and adventurous life for their family. She loved the outdoors, fishing, traveling and was always involved with her sons’ and grandchildren’s sporting activities. Medra was a devoted wife, mother and an accomplished businesswoman who helped found and run the family alarm business. Marty and Medra retired to Tavernier, FL, in the Florida Keys in 1984 and returned to their common home town of Glennville in September 2006. She was generous and caring and will be sadly missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to have shared a portion of her life.
She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Martin Akins of Glennville; sons and daughters - in - law, Terry and Cynthia Akins of Jacksonville, FL, and Ken and Beverly Akins of Miami, FL; grandchildren, Todd (Allison), Ashley and Shannon; great granddaughter, Brooke; sisters, Ruth Lomas of Bay Harbor, FL, and Carolyn Purvis of Glennville; brother, Dwight Todd of Winter Haven, FL.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 3, 2008, from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Knight officiating. Entombment followed at Glennville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers were Steve Todd, Ed Rushing, Randall Durrence, Billy Todd, Raymond Todd and Wayne Durrence.

Mona L. Andrews, 51

Mona L. Andrews, 51, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2008, at her residence under the care of Southern Care Hospice.
The Florida native had lived in this area most of her life. She was a 1975 graduate of Glennville High School and worked as a convenience store manager. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her mother, Bessie Moore of Collins; a sister Gail Dubberly of Reidsville; two brothers, Ricky Andrews of Reidsville and Darren Jones of Collins; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 4, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home in Reidsville with Rev. Kenny Harrelson officiating. Interment followed in the Battle Creek Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Reese, Gerald Reese, Johnny W. Andrews, Lonnie Hutcheson, David Durrence, and Joe Durrence.

George Herbert “Buck” Blocker Jr., 68

George Herbert “Buck” Blocker Jr., 68, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2008, after a two - year battle with cancer. The Tattnall County native was a 1958 graduate of Long County High School and retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation in 1992. He was a member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church. He was president of Pineywood Coonhunter’s Club and an honorary member of Beards Creek Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Laverne Blocker; brother, Mickey Blocker and sisters, Geraldine Rhodes and Brenda Goldwire.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ann Blocker of Glennville; son and daughter - in - law, Brian and Kimberly Blocker of Glennville; daughter and son - in - law, Kellie and Stacy Blocker of Glennville; three grandsons, Matthew, Mark and Dixon Blocker; sister and brother - in - law, Linda and Melvin Fort of Glennville; his special extended family, son and daughter, Lester and Darlene Dutton; grandchildren, Nikki and David Andrews and Courtney Dutton and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 3:00 p.m. at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Steve Miller officiating. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Delmas Jones, Jerry Howard, Billy W. Parker, James I. (Duck) DeLoach, Brian Anderson and Lester Dutton. Honorary pallbearers were Members of Pineywood Coonhunter’s Club and employees with the Georgia Department of Transportation Engineering Department.
Remembrances may be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, 200 Donehoo St., Statesboro, GA 30458 or Gideon’s International, P.O. Box 275, Hagan, GA 30429.

Avis Braggs

Mrs. Avis Braggs passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at the Glenvue Nursing Home in Glennville, GA. She was a native of Tattnall County, a member of Greater Zachariah Baptist Church and a resident of Glenvue Nursing Home for a number of years.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mellie Ruth Brown of Glennville, GA; a son - in - law, Daniel Brown of Glennville, GA; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, December 5 from 6 to 8 p.m., at King and Son’s Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 6, at 11:00 a.m., at Greater Zachariah Baptist Church in Glennville, GA, with burial following in the church cemetery.
King and Son’s Funeral Home of Glennville is in charge of the arrangements.
