Charles K. Carter, 69
Charles K. Carter was the first of two children born to Annie Lee Byrd Carter Thomas and the late Allen Carter, Jr., on May 21, 1938, in Glenwood, GA. Charles grew up in Miami, Florida, with his brother, Moses. He was reared by his aunt and uncle, the late Alberta Carter Thomas and Rev. Oscar L. Thomas. He joined the Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Miami, FL, at a young age. He attended the Phyllis Wheatley Middle School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1958 where he was a good student and popular.
He spent his summers in Savannah and Collins, GA, where he was afforded the opportunity to bond with his extended family. While living in Miami, he discovered his passion for working with people who were in bereavement and thus started working at Frances Funeral Home as a mortician and funeral director. After doing this for some years he decided to get into Law Enforcement and made a big move to New York City to work on the New York Police Department. He advanced his career at the Police Department and within five years he became a Supervisor. After spending some years in New York, he decided to move back to Georgia where he could be closer to his family. Upon his return, he made his church home at Bethlehem M. B. Church in Savannah.
He has worked in many capacities in Law Enforcement, such as a Correctional Officer at Coastal SP, Police Officer at Reidsville and Jesup Police Departments as well as security officer with Brinks Security. After doing this, he still could not shake his first love which was working with the funeral home business. Charles worked faithfully for Sidney A. Jones where he was a manager and director of funerals until 2005. He also worked with Miller Funeral Home in Hinesville, GA, and Sexton - Hall. Before his unexpected death, he was looking forward to working in the funeral home business once again. Lead by the Holy Spirit, Charles re - dedicated his life to God while residing in Reidsville, GA, at the Springfield Missionary Baptist Church.
Charles heard God’s voice on April 11, 2008, when he entered into eternal rest. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Moses, Eric, Harold and Aaron.
He leaves to cherish his memory: one son, Mark Carter Flynn of New York, NY; his mother, Annie Lee Thomas of Savannah, GA; one brother, James Thomas of Savannah, GA; one sister, Annie Pearl Payton of Atlanta, GA; three sisters - in - law, Ella Mae Carter of Reidsville, GA, Naomi and Alfreda Thomas of Savannah, GA; two grandchildren, and one great grandchild; nephews, Moses, Jr., Chris, Stevie, Kevin, Shawn, Keith, James, Jr.; nieces; Angela, Talisha, Charnet, Janene, Claudette, Keisha, Tina, Stephanie, Natalie and Angela Precious Joy; two very special cousins, Mattie McCrae, Reidsville, GA, and Mary Sanders, Warner Robins, GA; and a host of cousins, friends and church family.
The homegoing celebration will be held on Friday, April 18, 2008, at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Reidsville, GA, at 11:00am. Burial will be at Sandhill Cemetery.
Hays Watson Frost, 67
Hays Watson Frost, 67, passed away Friday, April 11, 2008, in Jacksonville. He was a native of Georgia but had lived in Jacksonville, FL for the past 50 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. He served during the Vietnam era and was known as the “Cookie Man.” He is remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, brother, uncle and caring friend to all who knew him. Hays was born in Statesboro, GA, to Lila Frost and the late Tom Frost. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 wonderful years, Sandra Frost.
He is survived by his son, Steven Frost of Jacksonville, FL; mother, Lila Frost of Reidsville, GA; brothers and sisters - in - law, Nathan and Marie Frost of Panama City, FL, Delmas Frost of Immocalle, FL, William and Ann Frost of Glennville, GA and Tommy and Beth Frost of Townsend, GA; sisters and brothers - in - law, Lottie Camp of Crescent, GA, Faye and Walter Hussey of Reidsville, GA, and Beverly and Sonny Medlock of Glennville, GA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held Monday, April 14, 2008, at Arlington Park cemetery in Jacksonville, FL.

Johnnie Lewis Bell, 77
Johnnie Lewis Bell, 77, of Metter, GA, died Wednesday, April 3, 2008, at the Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, GA, after an extended illness. He was a native of Emanuel County and was retired after 20 years of service with the U.S. Army, having served in both Korea and Viet Nam. He was also retired from the State of Georgia as a Food Service Director at the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, GA. Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his parents, Joe A. and Ella Ree Bridges Bell of Swainsboro, GA.
He is survived by his wife, Brigitte Laudan Bell of Metter, GA; one daughter, Regina Phillips of Claxton, GA; son and daughter - in - law, Gilbert and Joyce Bell of Duluth, GA; one brother, James Bell of Swainsboro, GA; three grandchildren, eight great - grandchildren; a special companion his dog Beau and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 2008, in the Peebles Curry Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Bell, Keith Bell, Timmy Bell, Marvin Deal, Larry Simmons, Jeff Glover and Terry Bell.

Carlos W. Blocker, 94
Carlos W. Blocker, 94, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life. He was the last of 12 siblings born to Henry Jasper Blocker and Eliza Jane Bacon Blocker. He, along with his wife, Kate, owned and operated C.W. Blocker Grocery on U.S. Highway 301 for 45 years. He loved people, especially children, was generous, good - natured, had a good sense of humor, loved gardening, and playing his harmonica. He also enjoyed baking pies, which he shared with his friends.
He was a loving Christian father and grandfather and faithful member of Harmony United Methodist Church, where members of his family have attended for over one hundred years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Kate McMillan Blocker and a son, C.W. Blocker Jr.
He is survived by a daughter and sons - in - law, Lela Jane and Warren Sarrell of Anniston, AL, and Carolyn and Jimmy Mobley of Powder Springs, GA; sister - in - law, Aligene Lambdin of Glennville; grandchildren, Melissa Rehberg, Maranda Mobley, Phillip Mobley, Wendy Blocker, April Jane Sarrell, Warren G. Sarrell Jr., Debra Benk, Doris Wade, Beth Hunt and Cathy Bowden; 14 great - grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Harmony United Methodist Church with Reverend Truett Leveritt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were R.L. Dasher, Adrian Blocker, John Durrence, Steve Long, Jeff Blocker and Danny Blocker. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Anchor Sunday school Class of Harmony UMC and Dr. David Scarborough.

Donald Harrison Burkhalter, 59
Donald Harrison Burkhalter, 59, of Townsend, died Thursday, April 3, 2008. Don was a native of Tattnall County who earned his undergraduate and master’s degree in Education from Georgia Southern University. He taught at several school systems in the region and retired after 25 years of service. After retirement Don’s love of the coast brought him to Shellman Bluff where he co - owned Coastal Breeze Realty.
He is survived by his daughter, Ashley Faith Burkhalter of Jesup; a sister, Barbara Tillman (Stanford) of Hazlehurst; two brothers, Alva Burkhalter (Myra) of Bainbridge and Gregg Burkhalter (Gail) of Lawrenceville; and two nieces, Kayla Tillman and Kimberly Bahrami. He was preceded in death by his parents, P.H. and Carrie Burkhalter.
A memorial service was held Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church with Reverend John Briley officiating.

Elisha Scott DeLoach, 25, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The Duval County, Florida native had lived in this area all of his life. He was of Baptist faith.
He is survived by his father and mother, Roy and Patricia DeLoach of Ludowici; brother and sister - in - law, Roy Jr. and Vicki DeLoach of Ludowici and a niece, Kaylee DeLoach of Ludowici. Graveside services were held Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Pigott Branch Baptist Church cemetery with Reverend Bryan Anderson officiating.
Pallbearers were Andrew Meadows, Vincent Meadows, Mike McCall, Brad Baxter, Patrick Baxter and James DeLoach IV.

Fannie Wilson Durrence, 90
Fannie Wilson Durrence, 90, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Stoney Hill Free Will Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Barney Lee Durrence; son Dave Durrence and great - granddaughter, Ashley Stroud.
She is survived by sons and daughters - in - law, Delbert and Leo Durrence of Augusta, Delmas (Shot) and Leigh Ann Durrence of Glennville and Betty Sue Durrence of Augusta; daughters and sons - in - law, Omie Jean (Sug) and Cecil Anderson of Glennville, Mary and William Anderson of Glennville and Mollie and Charles Foster of Perry; sisters, Louise Craft, Hazel Stubbs and Betty Grice of Claxton and Madeline Blocker of Glennville; 12 grandchildren; 16 great - grandchildren and two great - great - grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 6, 2008, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Harris Nix officiating. Burial followed in Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Willa Mae Todd Durrence, 87
Willa Mae Todd Durrence, 87, died Wednesday, April 3, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had lived in Florida for many years before moving back to this area in 2001. She was a homemaker and a member of Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Marion Todd and Edith Meeker Todd; sister, Vernice Purvis; brother, Otis Todd and husband, Henry B. Durrence.
She is survived by her daughter, Johnnie M. Blevins of Okeechobee, FL; three grandchildren; one great - grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church with Elder W.H. Durrence and Elder Jim Bowen officiating.

Lucy Collins Martin, 74
Lucy Collins Martin, 74, died Friday evening, April 4, 2008, at her home. The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident retired as a postal clerk, having worked in the Cobbtown, Vidalia and Metter U.S. Post Offices. She was a member, clerk and treasurer of the Sunlight Primitive Baptist Church. Lucy was a wonderful mother and homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Kermit Martin of Cobbtown; son and daughter - in - law, Danny and Karen Martin of Hoboken; daughter, Kay Martin Sikes of Collins; seven grandchildren, Jamie Sikes Edenfield (Tietgen), Clay J. Sikes, Jeannie M. Thompson, Carrie M. Rowell (Jesse), Adrian Martin, Joshua Martin and Tayler Martin; and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 6, 2008, at the Sunlight Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Richard Davis officiating. Burial followed in the Sunlight Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Sunlight Primitive Baptist Church.

Ellis Bernard Moye, 66
Ellis Bernard Moye passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at his residence after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 2, 1941, in Tattnall County to the late Bernard E. and Eva Moye, he grew up on a farm in Toombs County. A 1959 graduate of Lyons High School, he married
his high school sweetheart, Betty Joyce Hutcheson in 1960, and moved in Tattnall County in 1961. He retired from Canoochee EMC as Manager of Engineering and Construction in 2003 after 42 years of service. Ellis was a devout Christian and loving husband and father who served as an example of selfless service to others. He was a member of the Faith Assembly of God Church in Lyons.
Ellis is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, Jan Grimsley (BG Will) of Fort Hood, TX, Karen Hodges (Houston) of Claxton and Chris Moye (Julie) of Reidsville and Jennifer Grooms (Jason) of Brooklet; two brothers, George and James Moye of Lyons; four sisters, Dorothy Cowart of Reidsville, Charlsie Barfield, Barbara Collins, and Jewell Hodges of Lyons; eight grandchildren, Ben and Luke Grimsley of Dallas, Texas, Ariel, Jared and Eden Hodges of Claxton, and Kristin, Garret and Matthew Moye of Reidsville; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Lonnie Hutcheson, Jerry Van Lewis, Lamar Collins, Kevin Collins, Jerry Love, Carl Burkhalter. Honorary pallbearers were Canoochee EMC Employees and Canoochee EMC Retirees.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Reidsville Baptist Church, with Rev. Frank Harrelson and Rev. Byrnes Pitts officiating.
