James J. Canady, 78

Mr. James J. Canady, 78, passed away Sunday evening, January 6, 2008, at Tattnall Community Hospital. The Montgomery County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in the Korean Conflict and retired as a Chief Radio Operator from the Georgia State Patrol. He was a member of the Reidsville Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons and daughters - in - law, James Michael and Kelly Canady of Hagan and Donald Wayne and Tammy Canady of Baxley; daughter and son - in - law, Teresa C. and Darrion Stanfield of Reidsville; eight grandchildren, one great - grandson and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2008, from the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Kimbrell officiating. Entombment followed in Reidsville City cemetery with full honors.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home served the Canady family.

Alphonso Cooper, 94

Alphonso Cooper, 94, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, after an extended illness. He was born July 15, 1914, to the late Maggie Beatrice “Zeebee” Walker and Martin Cooper. He was reared and educated in Long County. He moved to Rochester, NY, during his youthful years. After some thirty plus years, he retired and returned home in 1991 and reactivated his membership at St. James AME Church.
He was united in holy matrimony to Annie Mae Grant who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Nora Cooper, Magnolia Hopkins, Earlene Nunnally and one brother, Herman Cooper.
He leaves to cherish his memory, three daughters, Bessie Stafford, of Miami, FL, Clara McArthur of Glennville, GA, and Sonya Benefield of Folkston, GA, fourteen grandchildren, thirty - seven great grandchildren, seventeen great - great grandchildren and one great - great - great grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends including Pearls of Life Hospice and two special caregivers, Louvinia DeLoach and Beth Ray.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James AME Church in Glennville, GA, with Reverend Sharlene Hendley officiating. Burial followed at Roberts Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers were Derrick King, John King, Gralyn Knox and Victor Porter. Honorary pallbearers were the Stewards and Trustees of St. James.
King and Sons Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of the arrangements.

Eula Powell Edwards, 76

Mrs. Eula Powell Edwards, 76, of Lyons died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at Toombs Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native lived most of her life in Lyons. She was a homemaker and loved taking care of children and her family. Eula was a very strong and determined lady with a wonderful green thumb. She was the widow of B.Q. Edwards.
She is survived by a son and daughter - in - law, Ricky and Anita Edwards of Lyons; three sisters, Joyce Edge, Carolyn Dyer and Tera Collins, all of Lyons; two brothers, Leonard Powell, Jr., and Marvin Powell, both of Lyons; five grandchildren, Tristen, Kelsey, Amber, Matthew and Jada.
Memorial services were held Friday, January 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel. Cremain burial followed at Mt. Moriah in Toombs County.

Darvin Hudson, 53

Darvin Hudson, 53, passed away, Wednesday, December 26, 2007. He was the son of the late Charles Hudson and Stella M. Braddy of Glennville.
Darvin attended public school in Glennville, GA, Tattnall County. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country and received an Honorable Discharge.
Darvin recommitted his life to God in January of 2006. He knew that it was time to serve the Lord with all of his heart. Darvin attended Greater Zachariah Baptist Church.
On November 9, 2006, Darvin married his long time love, Marilyn Monroe. It was at this time he shared a life commitment with his dear Marilyn.
Darvin leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Marilyn; three sons, Darvin Hudson Jr. (Shana), Derek Nesbitt, Kenny Nesbitt of Glennville; one daughter, Kim Aguilar (David) of Glennville; four brothers, Dennis, Lonzo (Ingrid), Eddie and Theron of Miami, FL; three sisters, Sandra of Glennville, GA, Carleen and Renitha V. (Costello) of Miami, FL; six grandchildren, Nigeria (Shana), Josh, Samuel (Monica), Shartisha (Vanessa), Brandon, Christin (Kim) of Glennville; four sisters - in - law, Babra, Beatrice of Reidsville, GA, Jerreathe (Billy), Thelma of N.Y. City; two brothers - in - law, Norman of Glennville, GA, and Marcus of N.Y. City and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 31, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at Greater Zachariah Baptist Church in Glennville, with Reverend C.L. Anderson, officiating. Interment followed in the Georgia Veterans cemetery in Glennville.
Pallbearers were Sherman Grubbs, Ruben King Jr., Barney Berry, Elmo Thomas, Ricky Holloway and Narcellus Porter.
King and Sons Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of arrangements.

William E. Kersey “Billy” 44

William E. Kersey “Billy” 44, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2007. He was born in Savannah, GA, and grew up in Port Wentworth, GA.
He was preceded in death by his father, Otis Kersey of Port Wentworth, GA, and his maternal grandmother, Lottie Powell of Collins, GA.
He is survived by his mother, Willodean Kersey of Collins, GA; two daughters, Chassity Clements of Vidalia, GA and Emily Kersey of Urbana, IL; one son, Evan Kersey of Urbana, IL; one grandson, Kodie Clements of Vidalia, GA; three brothers, Ronnie (Renee) Rich of Havana, FL, Paul (Julia) Kersey and Alan (Jeane) Kersey both of Rincon, GA; two sisters, Sylvia (Edward) Cannon of Nichols, GA, and Thena (Scott) Redding of Brooklet, GA; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Fairhaven Funeral Home with Brother Varney Aspinwall officiating. Burial followed in Gravel Hill cemetery in Bloomingdale, GA.
Fairhaven Funeral Home and Crematory in Garden City, GA, was in charge of the arrangements.

Haven Leaston Kicklighter, Sr., 89

Haven Leaston Kicklighter, Sr., 89, went to be with our Lord on Monday, January 7, 2008. Haven was born December 25, 1918, in Glennville, GA, the son of Leaston and Narcy Kicklighter. He was known to his friends as “Haven”, endearingly to his children as “Daddy” and his grandchildren as “PawPaw”. He retired from Fort Stewart in the position of Service Inspector in the Motor Pool. He has been called “a man of character” whose smile warmed the heart of others. He loved fishing in his pond, riding his tractor and working in his vegetable garden, which he shared with others.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Marjorie Hooten Kicklighter.
He is survived by his son and daughter - in - law, Haven and Sandy Kicklighter of Marietta, GA; daughter and son - in - law, Sharon and Mike Blacker of Livingston, TX; brother, Harris Kicklighter of Glennville, GA; grandchildren, Trey and Susan Kicklighter, Ty and Emily Kicklighter, Taz and Christie Kicklighter and Carl and Allison Swanson; great - grandchildren, Clair, Leaston, Sally, Sidney and Bode; and a host of men, women, and children whose lives he touched and who are richer for having known him.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville, GA. Burial will follow in Glennville City Cemetery.

Elzada Rogers Medders, 90

Elzada Rogers Medders, 90, died Sunday, January 6, 2008, at her residence, under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice and with special caregivers, Carol, Marie, Mary Dorisene and Linda.
She was born in Screven County and lived in Claxton, Pembroke and Glennville, GA. She was a loving mother. She was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Glennville.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, C.C. (Doc) Rogers of Claxton and Dewy Medders of Pembroke and her son, H. Allen Rogers of Tampa, FL.
Survivors were one daughter and son - in - law, Brenda and Robert Baggett of Glennville; one son and daughter - in - law, Henry and June Rogers of Tampa, FL; a daughter - in - law, Margie Rogers of Tampa, FL; two sisters, Ollie Eve Deleporte of MI., and Eula Mae Hayes of FL; six grandchildren, several great and great - great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 8, at 11:00 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Michael Morgan officiating. Burial followed at Brewton Cemetery, Hagan, GA.
Pallbearers were grandsons Robert Baggett, Jr., Joseph Clint Baggett, Henry Rogers, Jr., Tracy Rogers, Al Rogers and Jason Blalock.

Richard “Ricky” Ray, 41

Richard “Ricky” Ray, 41, passed away Friday, January 4, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Bibb County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He was a carpenter in the construction industry and attended Little Rock Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Ray of Glennville; children, Katrina and Larry Hill of Claxton and Danny and Darla Love of Glennville; brothers and sisters - in - law, Henry, Jr. and Jean Ray of Bloomingdale, Billy and Debra Ray of Claxton, Melvin Ray and Leslie Mizell both of Glennville; sisters and brothers - in - law, Lanine and Coy Rowe of Pembroke, Mary and John Andrulewicz of Midway, Janette and Mike Miemiec of Richmond Hill and Laurie Odom of Pooler; grandchildren, Hannah and Noah Hill and Kensly Love; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 6, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Bryan Anderson officiating. Burial followed in Little Rock Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Roger DeLoach, David Anderson, Jeffrey Sapp, Jonathan Waters, Jason Oliver and Jason Hampton.

Olevia Ringwood, 87

Olevia Ringwood, 87, died Sunday, December 30, 2007, at Fairview Hospital in Dublin, Georgia. She was born in December 1921 in
Greelyville, South Carolina, to Sallie and Horace Wright. She lived in Glennville and New Haven, Connecticut, and made Dublin her home for many years. She was a member of First African Baptist Church in Glennville for a number of years.
She is survived by her children: Naomi Kelly, William H. Ringwood, Samuel Ringwood, Sallie Mae Thomas, Nehemiah Ronnie Ringwood, Terry (Flora) Phillistean Obi, and Barbara Louise (Jeffery) O’Land; four brothers: Horace (Pat) Wright, Glenn Wright, Laverne Wright, Sr., and Ernest Wright; three sisters: Susie Williams,
Margaret Wright, and Novella (Ruben) King; and sisters - in - law, Beatrice Wright and Alma Wright.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5, at 11 a.m. at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church in Dublin. Burial was in Dudley Memorial cemetery in Dublin.
