Sandra “Sandy” Hill Lanier, 67
Sandra “Sandy” Hill Lanier, 67, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007, at her home in Melbourne, FL. She was a gentle, loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She will be sorely missed by her family.
Sandy was a Tattnall County native and lived in Melbourne for 48 years. She had professional experience with A.G. Edwards, Xerox, and Metropolitan Insurance. The joy of her work experience, however, was the last 30 years working for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as construction coordinator and business administrator for Victory Christian Center and last, New Hope Sanctuary.
She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years. Jack Lanier, who will miss her more than words can say; two sons, Lt. Col. Jack Lanier II, his wife Maria and their two children, Amelia and Nick of Gig Harbor, WA; and son, David “Mike” Lanier of Melbourne; her mother Sarah Hill of Reidsville; a brother Wally Hill and his wife Becky of Macon and their children, Jenny (Rob) Cowhig and Eric (Mel) Hill.
A “Celebration of Her Life Service” for her friends and family was held Thursday at New Hope Sanctuary in Melbourne.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 28, 2007, at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Elder John Sheldon Mikell and Rev. Jim Rogers officiating, burial followed in the Collins Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jay Bragg, Mike Collins, Alan Sikes, Travis Collins, Brett Coley, and Wesley Coley.
Kennedy Funeral Homes of Cobbtown was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Barbara Grinstead
Mrs. Barbara Maddox Grinstead, 56 of Ailey, died Wednesday, January 12, 2011.
Mrs. Grinstead was born in Montgomery County and was preceded in death by her father, John Alex Maddox. She was a homemaker and a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church, Montgomery County.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Grinstead; her mother, Addie Eudell Maddox, Soperton; 6 sisters, Moena Wilkes, Warner Robins, Ann Price, Mt. Vernon, Mary Jane Crabb, Hazlehurst, Judy Poole, Soperton, Jeanette Spivey, East Dublin, and Melba Conner, Uvalda; 3 brothers, Harold Maddox, Florida, Troy Maddox and Alvin Maddox, both of Soperton.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 14 in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Nabb Cemetery, Montgomery County.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Eva Morris Lewis, 101
Eva Morris Lewis, 101, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was a Custodian for The Glennville Bank for 40 years and homemaker. She was of the Baptist Faith.
She is survived by a brother, Barney Morris of Glennville, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 28, 2007, at Beards Creek Church Cemetery.

Will Ware
Mr. Will Delano Ware, age 77, of Soperton died Wednesday, October 13, 2010.
Mr. Ware was a son of the late McBride B. and Cassie McCrimmon Ware. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a United Methodist. He was retired.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Evelyn “Tish” Panagiotopoulos, Melbourne, FL, Tina Marie Hall, Soperton; brother, Tommy Ware, Soperton; six grandchildren, Panagiopis W. Panagiotopoulos,
Gavin Panagiotopoulos, Nicholas Panagiotopoulos, Joshusa Hall, Cody McBride Hall and Payton Cole Hall.
Graveside services will be held in Eastbrook Cemetery, Swainsboro, at 10 a.m. Friday, October 15, with Chaplain David R. Julian officiating.The family may be reached at 4960 Third St., Soperton.
There will be no visitation.
Annie Lou Purvis Mattox, 96
Annie Lou Purvis Mattox, 96, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007, at Autumn Winds Nursing Home in San Antonio, TX. She was born August 7, 1910, in Mendes, Georgia to Calvin and Fronny Purvis, she survived ten brothers and sisters and a husband of 70 years, Ben G. Mattox. She will be remembered by many as the smiling face behind the counter at Mattox Store in the Stony Hill Community for 35 years. After another 15 years spent running a second store in Winter Park, Florida she happily returned to Glennville to her many friends and family. She joined the Glennville Garden Club on her return to Georgia and loved to quilt and sew for the Sweet Onion Festival and to teach others how to quilt. She was awarded the Garden Club Member of the Year in 1989, a great joy to her. She was a beloved mother and a caring friend to all she met. She was the oldest member of Glennville First Christian Church, where she loved all the youth and was very supportive of them. In her later years at the Glenvue Nursing Home she was very happy and loved everyone, especially roommate and niece, Rhonda Waters.
She is survived by a daughter and son - in - law, Gwytha “Penny” and Tom Ryan of San Antonio, TX; a granddaughter, Sherry Mullen of San Antonio, TX; great - grandchildren, Melissa (Mrs. Vance) Weltner, Michael and Courtney Mullen, Megan K. Horacek; great great grandchildren, Braeden and Abigail Wiltner, and Shelby Mullen, all of San Antonio, TX, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Friday, July 27, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Rev. Kenny Edwards officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerry Harvey, Wayne Terrell, Tracy Durrence, Alan West, Troy Rahn, Ronnie Barnhill, Clyde Woolard, Jimmy McCurdy, Dennis Strickland, and Jared Durrence. Honorary Pallbearers were the members of Glennville Garden Club.

Dr. John Darsey Moore, 92
Dr. John Darsey Moore, 92, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, at his residence in Dunwoody.
Dr. Moore was born in Cobbtown on February 16, 1915. His parents were Dr. Grover Moore and Eva Jane Darsey Moore. He moved to Delray Beach, Florida when he was 10. He attended the University of Florida and then transferred to the University of Georgia where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938. He attended Emory University and earned a doctor of medical dentistry degree in 1942. He was also awarded a doctor of dental surgery degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He was drafted into the U.S. Air Force and served in the Dental Corps in North Africa and Italy during World War II from 1942 until his honorable discharge with the rank of Major in 1945 at the U.S. Air Force base in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He and his wife moved to Dunwoody two years ago. He was a member of the Florida Dental Association and a lifelong member of the dental fraternity, Delta Sigma Delta.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Goodale Moore of Dunwoody; daughters and sons - in - law, Martha Anne Moore and Steven Sheppard of Dunwoody, Darsey Jeanette Moore and David Shultz of Downers Grove, IL; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ellen Sheppard of Dunwoody; grandsons, Charles Douglas Schultz and John Vernon Schultz of Downers Grove, IL.
A Celebration of Life was conducted on Saturday, July 28, 2007, at Nunez Baptist Church in Nunez, Georgia, with Rev. Mark Sweat officiating. Burial followed in the Terwillger - Moore Family Cemetery.

Loulie Daniel Perkins, 95
Loulie Daniel Perkins, 95, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital.
She was a native and lived most of her life in Evans County. She was a member of Bay Branch Primitive Baptist Church. She was co - owner and operator of Perkins Jeweler’s, with her late husband, J. Lawson Perkins, until her retirement.
Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Patty and Bobby Kennedy of Claxton; two granddaughters and husbands, Diane and Tommy Lynn and Lu and Allen Durrence, all of Claxton; four great - grandchildren, Daniel and Ashley Lynn and Andrew and Allison Durrence; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 2, 2007, at Bay Branch Primitive Baptist Church with Reverend Jackie Wharam officiating. Burial will follow at Bay Branch Cemetery. Remembrances may be sent to Bay Branch P.B. Church cemetery Fund, Rt. 2, Box 75, Claxton, GA 30417.

Joseph Rothell Sapp, 87, died Monday, July 30, 2007, at his residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville most of is life. He was a building contractor for over 60 years and attended Glennville First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include sons, Joseph Sapp of Jacksonville, FL, Donnie Sapp of Orlando, FL, and Jeffery Sapp of Glennville; former wife, Kathleen Sapp of Jacksonville, FL; 11 grandchildren; 17 great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at Glennville First United Pentecostal Church with Reverend James M. Holland and Reverend James Young officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Danny Hardwick, Billy Johnson, Simmie Driggers Jr., Dale Yeomans, Edward Driggers and Mark Hendrix.

Sean Dana Swartz, 40
Sean Dana Swartz, 40, died Monday, July 30, 2007, at Hospice Savannah due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The Chatham County native had lived in the Tattnall County area most of his life and was employed as a roofer with Ray’s Roofing. He loved fishing, motorcycles and the outdoors and was of Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Wayne Swartz, Sr.
Survivors include his life partner, Carolyn Johnson of Odom; mother Martha Lynn Swartz of Glennville; children, Daniel Durrence, Ashley Swartz and Sean Swartz, all of Reidsville, and Sean Michael Swartz of South Carolina; sister, Rhonda Swartz of Collins; brother and sister - in - law, Wayne and Teresa Swartz of Amory, Mississippi; grandchild, Brinson Durrence and niece and nephew, Tiffany Swartz and Shawn Swartz of Amory, Mississippi.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 2, 2007, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home in Reidsville with Reverend Tommy Ray officiating. Honorary pallbearers were employees of Ray’s Roofing.

George A. Zettler, 79
George A. Zettler, 79, died Saturday, July 28, 2007, in Savannah. He was born in Effingham County, raised in Savannah and joined the United States Marine Corps in World War II at the age of seventeen. He was awarded the Bronze Star for saving the life of a man while under heavy enemy fire in Chosin Reservoir in Korea. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Captain in 1971. Mr. Zettler graduated from the John Marshall Law School and became an attorney in Savannah. He was elected City Alderman for the Sixth District and served for 13 years on Savannah City Council. He worked for many years on the Vietnam Memorial and raised money for the World War II Monument. He was a National Director of the Chosin Few and served as Judge Advocate of the American Legion, Post 184 and the Marine Corps League. He enjoyed cooking for the Marine Corps League meeting and for the Marine Corps Reservists en route to Iraq.
He is survived by his wife of 57years, Esteen Zettler of Savannah; daughter and son - in - law, Linda and Dennis Whetzel of Savannah; son and daughter - in - law, Gary and Patricia Zettler of Faulkville; granddaughters, Victoria Miller and Tiffany Whetzel; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder David Summerford officiating. Burial followed in Beards Creek Church cemetery with full Military Honors.

James I. Collins, 86
Mr. James I. Collins, 86, passed away Monday morning, September 17, 2007, at Meadows Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a retired farm equipment sales person.
He is survived by two sons and daughter - in - law, Jimmy Collins Jr., and Jimmy, III and Jessica Collins, all of Reidsville; a daughter, Cynthia Lee of Savannah; a sister, Virginia Scott of Vidalia; a brother, Harry L. Collins of Claxton; 13 grandchildren, several great - grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 19, 2007, with Rev. David Moxley and Rev. Tom Howard officiating. Interment followed in the Rome Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
