Jack Leon Cheney, 84
Jack Leon Cheney, 84, of Metter died Thursday in Statesboro at East Georgia Regional Hospital. The Tattnall County native lived in Reidsville 40 years and lived in Statesboro from 1963 to 1990 when he retired to Metter. Mr. Cheney was a Navy veteran, serving in World War II and was a Warrant Officer with the U.S. National Guard. He was a member of the Metter United Methodist Church and a past board member of the Reidsville and Statesboro Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Mallard Cheney and a granddaughter, Kimberly DeLoach.
He is survived by three daughters and a sons - in - laws, Joy and Al Minich of Wooddale, IL, Gay Cheney of St. Mary’s, GA, and Jan and Jerry DeLoach of Statesboro; four grandchildren and seven great - grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel - Metter. Reverend Jimmy Towson officiated. Burial followed in Reidsville City Cemetery. Military Honors were observed.
Pallbearers were Jerry DeLoach, Billy DeLoach, Jeremie DeLoach, Steve Cheney, Sonny Youmans and Kyle Thrift.

Ogden Doremus, 85
Ogden Doremus, 85, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Candler County Hospital. An Atlanta native, he was born in 1921 to Estes Doremus and Mary (Dolly) McAdory Doremus. In 1960, he moved to Savannah from Atlanta and established the law firm Doremus and Karsman. He and his wife Carol moved to Metter in 1972. He was a member of the Metter United Methodist Church.
Ogden was a partner in the Metter law firm if Doremus, Jones and Smith. He was Candler County State Court Judge for four terms ending in 2004. He received a law degree from Emory University in 1949. While in law school, he met and married
his beloved wife, Carolyn Greene Doremus. She preceded him in death in 1989. Doremus, a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 - 1946.
Called “Georgia’s Hero” by the state’s environmental community, he was one of the first trustees of the Georgia Conservancy and was instrumental in legislation declaring marshes to be state property, resulting in the Marshland Protection Act. He spoke at Georgia’s first Earth Day event and served as executive committee member of the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club. Doremus co - founded the Georgia Center for Law in the Public Interest. He was appreciated for his untiring work in the environmental community and was a mentor to the current leadership of these organizations.
He is survived by his son and daughter - in - law, Frank and Lisa Doremus of Westport, MA; two daughters, Celia J. Doremus of Arlington, MA; Dale M. Doremus of Santa Fe, NM; and a granddaughter, Carolyn Dixie Doremus of Westport, MA.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Metter United Methodist Church with burial in the Lake Cemetery. John I. Fennell, 67
John I. Fennell, 67, passed away Friday, April 6, 2007, at Tattnall Community Hospital. The Tattnall County native lived in this area all of his life. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, retired from Georgia Department of Corrections and the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of Twin Oaks Baptist Church, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great - grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn Fennell of Reidsville, daughters and sons - in - law, Victoria and Wendell Sikes of Collins, Traci and Jeff Rogers of Glennville and Staci and Sam Joseph also of Glennville; son and daughter - in - law, John Carroll and B.J. Fennell of Reidsville; sisters and brothers - in - law, Carolyn and Cleveland Blocker of Immokalee, FL and Glenda and Larry Anderson of Dalton, GA; brother and sister - in - law, Robert and Jo Fennell of New Branch; 13 grandchildren, three great - grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, 2007, at Twin Oaks Baptist Church, with Reverend Jerald Dorr, Elder Tom Sollosi and Elder Jerry Lightsy officiating. Bobby R. Harold, 63
Bobby R. Harold, 63, passed away Friday, April 6, 2007, at Memorial Health University Medical Center. The McIntosh County native had lived in this area since 1967. He was retired from Georgia National Guard and MATES at Ft. Stewart, after 31 years of service. He was a member of Philadelphia Lodge #73 the York - Rite in Savannah and Beards Creek Hunting Club.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Gordon; son, Bobby Randel (Robbie) Harold II, and brother, Jack C. Bozeman.
He is survived by his wife, Imogene (Punk) Harold of Glennville; son, Kelly Harold of Glennville; sister, Pat Grubbs of Glennville, grandchildren, Bobby Randel Harold III, of Darien and Chasitie N. Harold of Glennville.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, and were conducted by Reverend Parnell Aldridge and Reverend Oscar Rowe Jr. Burial followed in DeLoach Family cemetery with Masonic Graveside service.
Pallbearers were Gaylon Gordon, Roger Lane, Frank McClelland, Jr., Julius Cribbs, Jerry Howard and Tyrone Smith. Honorary Pallbearers were Beards Creek Hunting Club and Retirees of MATES, Georgia Army National Guard.

Ricky Laverne Matthews, 44, of Reidsville died at his home Thursday, April 5, 2007.
Mr. Matthews was born in Montgomery County.
Survivors include his parents, Gary and Geraldine Roberts of St. Augustine, FL; sister, Gail Creel of Dublin; three brothers, Ted Roberts of Valdosta, Barry Matthews of Starke, FL and Roy Matthews of Middleburg, FL.
Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home on Monday, April 9, 2007, with Reverend Brad Bailey officiating. Burial was in Hutcheson Cemetery, Truetlen County.
Pallbearers were Barry Matthews, Roy Matthews, Louis Matthews, Tim Bigelow, Joseph Griffitts and Bob Creel.
Jonathon Griffitts served as an honorary pallbearer.

Lawrence D. O’Rourke, 66
Mr. Lawrence D. O’Rourke, 66, of Pooler, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at his home after suffering from a lengthy illness.
Mr. O’Rourke was born in Omro, WI, and had lived in Pooler since 2005. He had been employed with the State of Georgia as a correctional officer. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1957 until 1961 and in the U.S. Army from 1961 until 1981 and served in Vietnam for 3 years. He was a Catholic and was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Isabell McCall O’Rourke, Sr. and his sister, Darlene.
Survivors include his wife, Ann O’Rourke; children, Laura (Eddie) Bragg, Misty (Michael) Moye, Rebecca (Alvin) Barnard, Larry O’Rourke, Jr., Sean O’Rourke and Kathleen O’Rourke; fourteen grandchildren; brothers, Gordon (Cindy) O’Rourke, Thomas (Theresa) O’Rourke and Gary (Karen) O’Rourke; brother - in - law, Richard Mathaus and a number of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 10, 2007, in the Chapel of Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Homes - West Chatham Chapel.

Edward Branch, 65, died Monday, April 2, 2007, after an extended illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area most of his life. He was retired from Life of Georgia Insurance Company and the Georgia National Guard. He attended Jones Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margie M. Branch of Jones Creek; two daughters and son - in - law, Tonya Hodges of Jones Creek and Suzanne and Shane Swindell of Rye Patch; a son and daughter - in - law, Dwight and Joy Branch of Statesboro; a sister and brother - in - law, Joyce and Jerry Maennche of Springfield; a brother and sister - in - law, Terry and Vicky Branch of Claxton and Randy Branch of Hinesville; five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 5, 2007, at Jones Creek Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Imogene Ray Colson, 73
Imogene Ray Colson, 73, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was retired from TAM Industries, a homemaker and a member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Curtis and Mollie Ray and her stepmother, Minnie Lee Ray.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Leroy Colson Jr. of Glennville; daughters and son - in - law, Wanda and Raymond Pettegrew of Claxton and Barbara Hatcher of Thomasville, GA; son and daughter - in - law, Randy and Suzanne Colson of Glennville; sisters and brother - in - law, Christine Sapp of Hagan, Reba Hill of Greenville, GA and Joy and Steve Spence of Rincon; brothers and sisters - in - law, Avon and Annette Ray of Glennville, O.T. and Joyce Ray of Reidsville, Ronnie and Sue Ray of Dallas, GA and Eugene and Carolyn Ray of Springfield; 11 grandchildren, 21 great - grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Steve Miller officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Jimmy Bland, Danny Ray, Gary Ray, Brian Blocker, Paul Dutton and David Cammack.

Dan Conner Sr., 63
Dan Conner Sr. was born February 14, 1944, in Glennville, GA, to Carrie Bell Harris of Miami, FL, and the late David Teasdell of Glennville, GA, and stepfather, John Young of Miami, FL. He departed his life on March 22, 2007, at Fort Pierce Nursing Home after a short illness.
He attended Glennville public schools. For many years he resided in Fort Pierce, FL, where he met Ms. Gloria Woods, his life - long companion.
He leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Dan Conner Jr. of Bellville, GA; one daughter - in - law, Carolyn Conner; two grandchildren, Danielle Conner and Dan Conner III; many step - children, Carl James of Philadelphia, PA, Johnnie M. Brown of Miami, FL, J. W. Kent, Michael, Timothy, Willie Kent, Michelle, Tammy and Damion Lavar Woods, all of Fort Pierce, FL; six brothers, James Harris, Henry Harris, Jerome Harris Jr., Alfonzo Harris, all of Miami, FL, David Teasdell Jr. and Monnie Joe Monroe, both of Glennville, GA; five sisters, Leola Dell, Charlene Harris, Maxine Newbold, Bernice Harris and Loretha Harris, all of Miami, FL; two brothers - in - law, Rodney Strachan and Lonnie Newbold of Miami, FL; three sisters - in - law, Leola Harris, Ida Wright and Pearl Harris, all of Miami, FL; three aunts, Willie Pearl Conner, Christine Hostick of Trenton, NJ, and Ida Teasdell of Claxton; one uncle, J. C. Conner of Trenton, NJ; nine step - grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 31, at the Center of Life Church of God in Glennville with Evangelist Jessie M. Young presiding. Interment followed in Old Halltown cemetery in Glennville.
